Abstract:Considering the characteristics of medical images , a multi-scale region growing segmentation algorithm is proposed .First ,the original image is smoothed by a Gaussian filter .Then ,the region growing segmentation is performed on both the original image and the smoothed image .Finally ,the two obtained segmentation maps are compared to get the final segmentation . In the process of region growing segmentation ,a pixel in the background region is selected as the initial seed for region growing . The advantages of the proposed algorithm are the robustness to noises and easiness of initial seed selection .This method is also suitable to other segmentation applications ,in which background region is simple but target region is complex .In order to select an appropriate threshold ,the concept of Maximum Gradient Transform (MGT) is proposed .The issue of threshold selection is converted into a minimization problem with the assistance of the statistical properties of the transformation matrix .Experiment results show that the proposed algorithm can obtain accurate medical image segmentation results .

Abstract:Image segmentation is one of vital researching branches in medical image processing and analysis. Considering the characteristics of medical images, we propose a bi-directional region growing segmentation algorithm. The interests of the algorithm include the easiness of initial seed selection and robustness to noises and the order of pixel processing. This method also holds for other segmentation applications in which background region is simple but target region is complex. In order to select an appropriate threshold, the concept of Neighboring Difference Transform is proposed. The issue of threshold selection is converted to minimization problem with the assistance of statistical properties of transformation matrix. Experimental results show that the algorithm can accurately obtain medical image segmentation results.

Abstract:A new method is proposed for automatic segmentation of edge-blurred medical images.by the which the images are compressed and dissected in multi-resolution through wavelet transform.The images are sharpened by strengthening the extremum of the high-frequents elements at each and every resolution and smoothened by neighboring average and median filtering.Then,the images are segmented automatically using the improved Ostu algorithm(maximization of interclass variance) and the regional growth algorithm through multiseed vote mechanism and,according to the segmenting effect,the threshold is controlled iteratively to evaluate the mean minimum distance with the error found in between the region segmented automatically and that segmented manually.The method proposed has been applied to 30 edge-blurred abdominal MRI images and proves its effectiveness for complex image segmentation.

Abstract:One algorithm,isoperimetric algorithm based on graph theory is applied and researched on image segmentation.Firstly,isoperimetric algorithm is applied in still image segmentation,and the result is compared with two methods based on edge detection and region detection.Then,isoperimetric algorithm is used to segment image video by combined with operation of morphology.Based on several experiments,they are researched.The results show that isoperimetric algorithm can be applied in both still image and image video.Isoperimetric algorithm does well in image segmentation,and it is a fast graph partitioning method.And a good result can be gotten in low contrast image by combined with morphologic operation.

Abstract:The article brought forward a color image segmentation algorithm based on visible color difference and sub-block region growing techniques.Firstly,the original image is first divide into sub-blocks which are not overlapped.In CIELab space,calculate the mean and variance of every sub-black,classify the sub-block with the variance of it,it achieve initial region by classifying and mergeing the color uniform sub-blocks with visible color-difference,split and merge the texture sub-block with quadtree,final grow,and merge from initial region,and delete mini color block.The experimental segmentation results hold favorable consistency in terms of human perception,and confirm effectiveness of the algorithm.

Abstract:A method based on a symmetric region growing algorithm is presented for the segmentation of ultrasonic medical image. The method divides into three steps. First, according to the characteristic of the ultrasonic medical images, an adaptive weighted median filter is used to suppress speckle noise. Then, scan the digital image from the first row and grow regions from each scanned point by applying the growth criteria and combination criteria until all image pixels have been scanned. Examine the resulting regions using the seed criteria. If any point of a region satisfies the criteria for the region of interest region, assign the region to the resulting segmented image. The effectiveness of this method and a group of growth criteria as well as combination criteria applicable to ultrasonic medical image have been obtained by cardiac ultrasound image segmentation experiments. The experiment result shows that this method is good in the performance of the segmention of cardiac ultrasonic medical image.

Abstract:Aiming at the segmentation of liver region in the abdomen CT image, we propose a novel method based on Grow-Cut algorithm. The Grow-Cut is an iterative algorithm, as the automation labels the image, user can observe the segmentation evolution and guide the algorithm with human input where the segmentation is difficult to compute. In this paper, we propose a new energy function for the traditional Grow-Cut method to obtain the better segmentation precision. Moreover, we do a pretreatment using the k-means to decrease the running time. In additions, we take multi labels for the Grow-Cut to get multiple organ segmentation results in one operation. Lastly, we take several experiments to demonstrate the validation of our proposed algorithm, and experimental results show that our method has a good robustness.

Abstract:A medical image segmentation algorithm based on robust feature statistics is proposed in this paper.Users provide seeds,and this paper uses robust feature statistics to describe the features of objects,makes contour smoothly and decreases the effect of noise.It makes contour evolution fast and according to the Sparse Field Method(SFM) to get the outline of objects.Experimental results show that this algorithm gets 73 points in 5 kinds of evaluation indicators for MR abdominal liver segmentation,is better than the region growing algorithm and rapid level set algorithm,liver segmentation time is 123 s,and can make good segmentation of organs and tumors in MR and CT images.

Abstract:In multi-cell segmentation process of medical images,segmentation quality declines when cell edges are blurred.To solve segmentation problem in such complex situations,this paper presented a combined segmentation method.This new method combined a nonparametric clustering method(mean shift) with region merging.First,an over-segmentation result was obtained by the mean shift algorithm.Then,based on the rules of region merging,the correct result was achieved by merging the over-segmentation regions.This method was applied to microscopy images of live cells.Its performance was proven more efficient than the geometric active contour algorithm,threshold segmentation algorithm,mean shift algorithm and watershed method.Using this method,overlapped cells can be individually separated,with the edges of individual cell in image approaching its real edges.This method lays a good foundation for further image research.

Abstract:The techniques and the processes to divide the image into several parts which have different features and to pick up foreground are called image segmentation. In this work, we propose a new approach for gray scale image segmentation based on level set method. At first, every pixel on the image is divided into either similar-property class or dissimilar-property class based on the variance of a small area centered at the pixel. Then, the velocity of curve evolution for these two classes is defined respectively. It is determined by a value called the dissimilarity of the area. Experimental results show that this approach can obtain good segmentation results of artificial images and real medical images fast and accurately.

Abstract:The single arithmetic ot color image segmentation inevitably has some deficiencies and defects, and we can combine different algorithms according to the actual situation or have a hierarchical division of image segmentation. This paper suggests a hybrid intelligent color image segmentation method. Region growing is used to finish initial segmentation, the final segmentation images is realized by MST method which looks every region produced by region growing as a node, and an particle swarm optimization is used to get the best thresholding of MST. Region growing focuses on local variations of an image with fast speed while MST can extract the global property of an image, and particle swarm optimization can improve the algorithm speed. The method presented in this paper combines their advantages. Experiment results show that the new method has good effectiveness and efficiency. ©2008 IEEE.

The purpose is to accurately segment the target area and provide effective help for doctors to diagnose and treat patients. Abstract:In order to overcome these shortcomings,such as the traditional algorithms could not locate boundary exactly and needed too many manual work,this paper proposed a novel ROI segmentation method using region growing.Firstly,this algorithm used the modified Canny algorithm detecting the boundary cursorily,and then carried out region growing using the gray values and texture information of ROI.For carrying out region growing well,the algorithm analyzed the gray value and texture of each pixel in ROI,and proposed growing rule based on vector operation and gray value judgment.The experimental results show that the new method not only can segment the complex and abnormal regions in medical images,but also has great robustness and practicality.

Abstract:Medical image segmentation is widely used in clinical medicine, and the accuracy of the segmentation algorithm will affect the diagnosis results and treatment plans. However, manual segmentation of medical images requires extensive experience and knowledge, and it is both time-consuming and labor-intensive. To overcome the problems above, we propose a novel interval iterative multi-thresholding segmentation algorithm based on hybrid spatial filter and region growing for medical brain MR images. First, a hybrid spatial filter is designed to perform on the original image, which can make full use of the spatial information while denoising. Second, the interval iterative Otsu method based on region growing is proposed to segment the original image and its filtering layer. The initial thresholds can be quickly obtained by region growing algorithm, which can reduce the time complexity. The interval iterative algorithm is used to optimize the thresholds. Finally, a weighted strategy is used to refine the segmentation results. The segmentation results of our proposed algorithm outperform other comparison algorithms in both subjective and objective evaluations. Subjectively, the obtained segmentation results have clear edges, complete and consistent regions. We use the uniformity measure (U) for objective evaluation, and the U value is significantly higher than other comparison algorithms. The proposed algorithm achieved an average U value of 0.9854 across all test images. The proposed algorithm can segment medical images well and expand the doctor's ability to utilize medical images.

Abstract:Medical image is one of the key factors in the process of medical diagnosis and treatment. By analyzing the medical image obtained, doctors make judgments on the patient's condition and plan the next treatment process. Medical image segmentation is the process of segmenting areas of interest in medical images according to specific needs, which is a key step in medical image processing and analysis. With the great improvement of computer processing power, how to quickly and effectively segment huge image data and mining valuable information is the research hotspot of segmentation algorithm at present. This paper introduces several traditional medical image segmentation methods such as threshold method and region method, as well as convolutional neural network and Transformer segmentation method based on deep learning technology. Finally, this paper makes a summary and prospects for future development.
An Automatic Multiscale Region Growing Segmentation in Medical Image Based on SLIC and 2D OTSU

Abstract:Most of medical image processing is involved in segmentation generally. It had been known that the region growing algorithm can perform the segmentation effectively, but it depends on the position of the initial seed point and the rule of growing primarily. This research develops a scheme of selecting seed points and a multiscale growing, which both are applied to division of pathological tissue slide image. The scheme takes simple linear iterative clustering (SLIC) to extract region of interest (ROI) containing nucleus, which makes selection trapped in these areas. Then, 2D OTSU completely searches pixel sets in these regions as seed points. In this way, nucleus of which grayscale is inhomogeneous can be extracted completely rather than partially. To improve efficiency, seeds growing in multiscale is adopted. Larger scale is priority to be grown, then supplementary to smaller one. Compared to SLIC and 2D OTSU respectively, the experimental result shows effectiveness and superiority of the algorithm.

Abstract:Generic algorithm is quite effective while searching near-optimal solutions in complex and large spaces.In this paper we applied generic algorithm in solving the image segmentation issue with its advantages.The inter-regional differences and the inner-regional similarities are two important factors reflecting the effect of image segmentation.Our method achieves image segmentation effect with high quality through simultaneously optimising the inter-regional differences and the inner-regional relative similarities of the image with generic algorithm.Besides,we use greedy algorithm to pre-process the image,and the minimum spanning tree are also used to decrease the computing scale and search space of the algorithm.Experiments proved the effectiveness of the generic algorithm in solving image segmentation.

Abstract:Digital medical image plays an important role in the early clinical diagnosis .Analysis of tumor shape is one of the important method for distinguishing malignant tumor from benign tumor.The final detection result of breast tumor relies on segmentation of tumor region to a great extent.The tumor needs to be segmented from background for extracting shape features based upon the contour of region.A multi-tolerance region growing method is proposed for the detection of tumor region and extraction of their contours.The experiment shows that the proposed method is very effective with high precision and robustness.

Abstract:In company with medical instruments ' development, the corresponding software plays more and more role in the application. And medical image processing software has become an important component of the medical ultrasonic instruments. Image segmentation plays an important role in both qualitative and quantitative analysis of medical ultrasound images. But state-of-arts methods in the aspect of segmentation can not get satisfactory results. We propose an intelligent image segmentation method for medical ultrasonic images. The algorithm improved active contour model with relevance vector machine, where the advantages of supervised learning classification and the global region distribution information can be exploited to enhance the performance. In order to improve the segmentation speed and get precise initial contour, relevance vector machine also is used to obtain initial contour firstly. A large amount of experimental results have proved that our method outperforms many state-of-arts methods in the aspect of segmentation, and the method can be used in ultrasonic instruments effectively.
A Method for Segmenting Brain Tumors in CT Images Based on Mathematical Morphology

Abstract:The traditional methods are deficient for segmenting brain tumors in CT images because they need priori knowledge. What is more,they are difficult to automatically extract feature points because of low contrast between feature points and the background. In order to overcome these shortcomings,this paper proposes a method based on mathematical morphology. It mainly includes several steps. Firstly,Top-Hat Transformation and its duality are used to get the peak points,the valley points and the high-low curvature points that are urgently necessary for segmention. Secondly,transformed image with the original to "XOR" operator can achieve the purpose of effectively segment the tumor. The result shows that without the guidance of the priori-knowledge,this method is obviously better than traditional methods and has a good usability.
