On the Estimation and Adjustment of Household Living Standard in China

Abstract:With the deepen of China's reform and opening to the outside world,great attention has been paid to the household living standard in China.Based on the theoretical and empirical analysis on Engel's coefficient and Engel's law,the paper points out that Engel's coefficient cannot well explain the living standard of Chinese households.In order to better evaluate the household living standard in China,the authors try to use several index and factor analysis to find out representative factors with economic values,and an empirical analysis is made on Chinese urban households in different regions in China by using relative data in 2005.The empirical analysis show that compared with Engel's coefficient,the evaluation based on factor analysis can better explain the household living standard in China.
