Abstract:This paper presents an approach to the thoughts and characteristics of Adam Smith's ethics, who's more often regarded as"The Father of Economics".By comparing the ethics thoughts of Adam Smith,predecessors and other men of his age,the author concludes that Smith's points were apparently different from those of Hobbes,Mandeville,Hutchinson and Hume in the following three basic issues:"the nature of virtue","the ground of moral judgment"and"the basic method to study moral philosophy". Smith's ethics oriented from"sympathy",developed to"virtue"and finally formed a complete ideological system of which the core is"propriety".His virtue theory,conscience theory,justice theory and utility theory were all strictly built on the basis of"sympathy",which is the characteristic and value of his ethics system.It is indicated that exploring his moral theory features will help to recognize Smith's special importance in the Scottish Enlightenment thinkers and to comprehend his present-day values.

Abstract:On the perspective of individual, "Selfish" and "Moral" are both characteristics within human nature; On another perspective of society, in older to maintain the extending of cooperative order, it is important to construct the moral baserof the society which should be accordant with the market. However, Chinese traditional society is absences of the social moral. The theory of "social moral" which was raised by David Hume on particular moment plays an extremely important role in our current development of market economy. Universal moral rule is the precondition of economics theory. Furthermore, the valuation rule of economy theory also rejects the immoral economy behavior. So the proposition "market economy is immoral" cannot be tenable.

Abstract:Markets are one of the most fundamental institutions in human societies.In principle,from the times of Adam Smith economic research has been developed around the subject of markets.However,to date,economists have failed to offer a theory of the market itself.Following the Coasian paradigm,this paper explored the basic question of "why do markets exist" and identified both the boundary and substitution conditions of the existence of the market.Based on the existence theory of the market,we further examined how ubiquitous multilateral transaction costs shape the macro-framework and micro-structure of the market network and how these transaction costs determine the nature and function of firms within market network as well as how transaction costs and market network affect economic growth.This paper concludes that today's economics should study the market not only as an invisible hand but also as a tangible network.

Abstract:In his classic discussion on the essence of commercial transaction in the market economy, Adam Smith consciously advocated that the both sides of the transaction have only selfish motives but no altruistic motives. It is from this discussion that the two ideas of selfish economic man” and invisible hand” as well as the so-called Smith paradox （or Smith problem）” have further derived. Through a close reading of this discussion, however, we would find that it actually reveals a fact that the economic man has both selfish and altruistic motives in transactional acts, which could deny or solute these famous ideas or paradoxes that have had a profound impact on the development of modern economics. The crux of the matter is that the former half of the sentence by which Smith described the essence of commercial transaction, Give me that which I want”, indeed clearly means that the economic man has a selfish motive: I am willing to get the good thing that you have and I want. In this context, yet, we have to admit that the latter half of the sentence, and you shall have this which you want”, clearly means that the economic man has also an altruistic motive at the same time: I am willing to give you what I have and you want. When Smith repeatedly said that We address ourselves, not to their humanity but to their self- love, and never talk to them of our own necessities but of their advantages”, and mutual good offices which we stand in need of”, what he actually suggested is still that the two sides have both the selfish and the altruistic motives in an intrinsically inseparable way, so that they can eventually complete the not unilaterally but mutually beneficial transaction. In this regard, moreover, the essence of commercial transaction implies such basic characteristics of normal trading acts as fairness, equality, honesty, and freedom: the two sides try to get the good things they want by fairly providing the good things their counterparts want through exchange, so that they take the other party as a trader with equal status, keep the promises of giving the good things that they have to each other, and finally let themselves freely achieve their aims respectively. By contrast, if they have only selfish motives and no altruistic motives, treating the other party in a selfish way that you give me what I want, but I don’t give you what you want”, they could not take any normal trading acts, with the result that the market economy loses its inherent characteristics of freedom”. According to this re-interpretation of Smith’s classic discussion, then, the basic presupposition of the selfish economic man would be denied first: if an economic man has no altruistic motives, he will be unable to engage in normal trading action and thus unqualified to be an economic man. Secondly, the hand that Smith defined as invisible” would become visible: since the economic man has both selfish and altruistic motives, he will naturally promotes the interests of others and society when he tries to promote his interests through trading acts. Finally, Smith paradox” would also be resolved: because of having both selfish and altruistic motives, and necessarily involving interpersonal relationships in trading acts, the economic man would inevitably become a moral person with a positive or negative attribute. Furthermore, the main reason for Smith’s self-defeating discussion is that due to the distorted influence of the dichotomy between the selfish” and the altruistic” in Western moral philosophy, he put these two motives in absolute opposition when discussing the essence of commercial transaction. Then, he did not realize that they are able to be compatible with each other in the self-interested” will of the economic man to pursue good and avoid evil, and can urge them to engage in mutually beneficial trading action.

Abstract:What is the place of the market in society? Polanyi's answer derives from institutional separation and the self-regulating mechanism of supply and demand. In this article, I offer an alternative approach. Following Aristotle, I suggest that commodity fiction follows from the fictitious nature of valuation in the market economy. I then combine this broader definition of commodity fiction with Aristotle's ideas on means and ends of human action, which leads to a framework relating the uniform standard of value in the market economy to commodity fiction and market imperialism. This framework, like Polanyi, underlines the market's subordination of society, but it explains such domination with how the market subverts political deliberation on the allocation of time and resources to distinct objectives in society. The result is a theoretical framework that goes beyond the embeddedness-disembeddedness dichotomy and that emphasizes how the place of the market in society is inextricably a political phenomenon.

Abstract:Does Adam Smith play an essential role in the history of political philosophy?Most political philosophers give a negative answer.Even though Isaiah Berlin in his classic essay ″Two Concepts of Liberty″ says that Adam Smith ″believed that social harmony and progress were compatible with reserving a large area for private life over which neither the State nor any other authority must be allowed to trespass,″ he provides Smith with a position opposite to that of Thomas Hobbes in the hi story of political philosophy.But when Joseph Cropsey comes to Adam Smith in The History of Political Philosophy,co-edited with Leo Strauss,he comments that Smith's ″fame now rests upon the foundation he laid for the science of economics.In all of this there is not much of political philosophy to be seen,the close conjunction of economics and political philosophy,even or perhaps especially if tending toward the eclipse of latter,is a powerful fact of political philosophy;the men,like Smith,who were responsible for it would have a place in chronicle of political philosophy on that ground alone,″ and concludes that Adam Smith plays a negative and un-central role in the history of political philosophy.Besides,in his Lectures on the History of Political Philosophy,John Rawls says little about Smith.In A Theory of Justice,Rawls mentions Smith only when he criticizes utilitarianism.He does discuss Smith's ideas like ″invisible hand,″ ″impartial spectator″ and ″self-command,″ but they secure no significant position for Smith in political philosophy.In a word,except Berlin,these main scholars of political philosophy don't accept that Adam Smith plays an essential role in the history of political philosophy. In the light of classic metaphors as ″impartial spectator,″ ″economic man,″ ″invisible hand″ and ″night watchman,″ Adam Smith suggests an enlightenment utopia about civil society.These metaphors have such a seminal impact in the history of political philosophy that Hegel's ″die List der Vernunft,″ Carl Marx's ″community of freeman,″ Ronald Dworkin's ″Heracles,″ Richard Rorty's ″liberal ironist″ and Robert Nozick's ″minimal state″ all bear some intellectual origin.So different from those scholars mentioned above,we conclude that Adam Smith holds some central role in the history of political philosophy. ″Adam Smith problem″ is another topic to be discussed in the paper.Recently,Professor Luo Weidong of Zhejiang University suggests a new version of ″Adam Smith problem″ and calls it ″Adam Smith enlightenment paradox.″ Based on a comparative study on the meanings of Smith's key sentences in The Wealth of Nations and The Theory of Moral Sentiments,we find that there is no such a paradox between the two works.Individuality with sympathy,free market,decent society and limited government are the four elements that construct a basic frame for Smith to explore his utopia of civil society.It is clear that Smith has an intellectual turn from philosophical ethics to political economy.Even though Smith in the last year of his life made many revisions in his last version of The Theory of Moral Sentiments,those revisions still do not change his main stance on civil society. In 1901,when The Wealth of Nations was first translated into Chinese,accompanied with Charles Darwin's and John S.Mill's works or ideas,Smith was one of first three modern western thinkers being introduced to the Chinese people.These great thinkers played essential roles in the modern Chinese enlightenment,and among them Smith was the first one who had a special sentiment towards China,studying China society comprehensively and providing accurate comments on China — as a closed and traditional nation state.As Richard Rorty suggests,there are two enlightenment programs,one is philosophical,aiming at Truth;the other is political,aiming at Freedom.When the philosophical plan fails,the political one should continue.Now China is increasingly open to the world,and when we take Adam Smith's advice more seriously than before,it will make a new and even essential intellectual contribution to the construction of civil society in China today.

Abstract:The relevance of Adam Smith for understanding human morality and sociality is recognized in the growing interest in his work on moral sentiments among scholars of various academic backgrounds. But, paradoxically, Adam Smith's theory of economic value enjoys a less prominent stature today among economists, who, while they view him as the 'father of modern economics', considered him more as having had the right intuitions about a market economy than as having developed the right concepts and the technical tools for studying it. Yet the neoclassical tradition, which replaced the classical school around 1870, failed to provide a satisfactory theory of market price formation. Adam Smith's sketch of market price formation (Ch. VII, Book I, Wealth of Nations), and more generally the classical view of competition as a collective higgling and bargaining process, as this paper argues, offers a helpful foundation on which to build a modern theory of market price formation, despite any shortcomings of the original classical formulation (notably its insistence on long-run, natural value). Also, with hindsight, the experimental market findings established the remarkable stability, efficiency, and robustness of the old view of competition, suggesting a rehabilitation of classical price discovery. This paper reappraises classical price theory as Adam Smith articulated it; we explicate key propositions from his price theory and derive them from a simple model, which is an elementary sketch of the authors' more general theory of competitive market price formation.

Abstract:The purpose of this essay is to review the state of economics as a discipline in light of how and to what extent ethical considerations and the precepts of moral philosophy affect the theory and application of economics. In its pursuit for purely ‘objective’ analyses and, thereby, attain the status of a science, modern neo-classical economics is constrained by self-imposed limitations in making value judgments about justice and fairness in a market economy. Adam Smith’s idea of “invisible hand” of the market driven by self-interested behaviour has sometimes been interpreted, wrongly, as a kind of market fundamentalism that ignores many failures and brutalities of the modern-day capitalism. While many ethical elements do go into economic policy analyses, these are still constrained by the discipline’s neglect of non-market activities and its tendency to undervalue the aspects of well-being which cannot be easily measured in monetary terms. This essay argues that economists may do better by improving their understanding of the complexity of human behaviour and the functioning of market institutions by embracing new ideas developed in other disciplines, such as neuroscience, experimental psychology and political sociology; they also need to allow more scope for ethical judgments in their choice of topics for inquiry, in their methodological approaches and in drawing policy conclusions. Without losing the analytical rigour, which is the hallmark of the discipline, economics needs to be broader in order to be better.

Abstract:Mainstream economists now consider their discipline to be a technical one that is free from ethical concerns. I argue that this view only arose in the twentieth century. In this paper I set out a brief history of economics as a moral science. First, I sketch the evolution of economics before Adam Smith, showing that it was generally (with the exception of the mercantilists) conceived of as a part of moral philosophy. Second, I present elements of the new interpretation of Smith, which show him as a developer of economics as a moral science. Third, I show that even after Smith, up to the beginning of the twentieth century, a number of leading economic theorists envisioned economics as a moral science, either in theory or in practice. Fourth, I sketch the decline of economics as a moral science. The key factor was the emergence and influence of positivism. Overall, I show that the current view of the detachment of economics from morals is alien to much of the history of the discipline.

Abstract:In this essay I discuss the proposition that Adam Smith has been widely misinterpreted as asserting in his second book, The Wealth of Nations, that emergent modern economies are driven by the strictly selfish motives of their human inhabitants. The propositions articulated in his first book, The Theory of Moral Sentiments, which offered a theory of society, extended seamlessly into his second book, and continued to be part of his theory of economy. In both works, he distinguished the universal state of being self-interested from actions taken in one's self-interest, and modeled people as creating and following rules of propriety that enabled them to better get along with their neighbors. This distinction explains why, in his second book, he refers to people following their "o wn interest" in their "own way" explicitly avoiding any suggestion that people pursued only their strictly selfish interests in the process of wealth creation. That cautionary effort failed, although Smith continues to be a spectacularly successful theorist of society and economy, especially of interest to scholars in behavioral and experimental economics.

Abstract:Adam Smith’s economic system followed his philosophical convictions. The policy conclusions came before the analysis. To support his policy of Free Trade, or rather, the ‘system of liberty’, Adam Smith gradually built up his economic system , from the Lectures on Jurisprudence to the Wealth of Nations. In the process, he had to exorcise the impact of unemployment. This paper shows how Smith was enabled to come to such a conclusion. Smith argued that employment was set by technology and prior capital accumulation. Even if Government wished to do so, it could not increase aggregate employment. Much of the paper concerns the various ways in which Smith made such an argument plausible. It also shows how Smith is related to the general equilibrium models of today.

Abstract:Commerce changes the production of wealth in a society as well as its ethics. What is appropriate in a non-commercial society is not necessarily appropriate in a commercial one. Adam Smith criticizes Stoic self-command in commercial societies, rather than embracing it, as is often suggested. He argues that Stoicism, with its promotion of indifference to passions, is an ethic appropriate for savages. Savages live in hard conditions where expressing emotions is detrimental and reprehensible. In contrast, the ease of life brought about by commerce fosters the appropriate expressions and sharing of emotions. Imposing Stoicism on a commercial society is therefore imposing an ethic for savages onto a refined society – something to abhor. Smith’s rejection of Stoicism in commercial societies can thus be seen as a defence of commerce.

Although maximizing profit is unblamable and is a basic rule in the market economy, only by combining business ethnics into consideration, can an economic entity find living space, get approved of by the society, and, further, remain invincible in competition. From the above point of view, the inevitability and importance of the existence of business ethics are addressed in this paper in the aspects of economy, society and enterprise management respectively.

Abstract:The ethic foundation of "invisible hand" is not "selfishness",but the combination of "self-interest" for ego and "sympathy" for others.To turn this ethic foundation into social reality,a social structure must be established to drive individuals to reach self-interest only through "sympathy" for others,and this structure is exactly the goods exchanging network.And the goods exchange process can be divided into two levels:interest exchange and the value exchange which is the exchange of power embedded in goods.The fundamental defect of Smith is that he didn't understand the differences between "labor" and "labor power".As a result,Smith failed to understand that capital gets the power of the "labor" merely through command over the "labor power" and the value of former is much more than the latter,this is just a lever-like amplification effect of the possession power.

Abstract:Rationality and Society, Ahead of Print. In this paper, we perform a text analysis of Adam Smith's two books, the Theory of Moral Sentiments and the Wealth of Nations, to better characterize their highly disputed differences in terms of moral cognition. In particular, given that Smith's ideas are still very cited and influential in the current scholarly debate on moral cognition, we are interested in understanding whether a text analysis would unveil a semantic structure that is in line with a dual process theory interpretation or, alternatively, with a neuro-emergent cognition one. We find that, despite that the intellectual koine in which Smith's thought was originally embedded would be more in line with a dual process theory approach, the analysis reveals a better consonance with the neuro-emergent cognition approach. This opens new and interesting perspectives in future research on the moral cognition of market interactions in a Smithian tradition of thought.

Abstract:Adam Smith was not the founder of "minimum government" and he didn't propose "a strong state" which uses the market as an effective instrument of government. Smith asserted that the intention of government was to protect the perfect rights of each social member and the law of justice. Based on these thoughts, Smith established a system of natural liberty in the criticism of mercantilism. In this system, government has only three functions to implement. In order to perform these three functions, government necessarily needs a certain expense, however, government has always been failing for its functions when deals with the economic matters. Smith considered the opulence of people and nation as the end of political economy. To attain that end, government should protect and serve market by all means. Government, market and the nation should coordinate each other. The welfare state is one of the effects of government actions.

Abstract:Confucian ethics as applied to the study of business ethics often relate to the micro consideration of personal ethics and the character of a virtuous person. Actually, Confucius and his school have much to say about the morals of the public administration and the market institutions in a more macro level. While Weber emphasizes the role of culture on the development of the economy, and Marx the determining influence of the material base on ideology, we see an interaction between culture – specifically Confucian business ethics – and the economy. In this paper, we are going to study this interaction in several crucial stages of development of Confucianism. The paper concludes by postulating the relevance of Confucian business ethics to the global knowledge economy.
