Abstract:For sonar detection and tracking in the presence of strong interference pulses,an adaptive interference cancellation method in the element domain was proposed,which is based on least mean square(LMS) adaptive filtering.The work reduces the computation burden by frequency domain batch processing,and achieves fast suppression of strong pulse via varied step adaptive iteration.An adaptive interference cancellation method for reference signal extraction was presented,and constrained gradient computation in the adaptive algorithm was implemented.Therefore,stable target tracking in strong interference environments can be accomplished.Experiments during sea trial indicated that strong interference pulses can be suppressed effectively using this method without any loss of target information.Stable target tracking in such environments are accomplished while the signal corrupted by strong interference pulses is detected.

Abstract:Two clinical ablation protocols, 2C3L and stepwise, have been routinely used in our group to treat atrial fibrillation (AF), but with a less than 60% long-term arrhythmia-free outcome achieved in patients. The goal of this study was to examine the underlying mechanism of low success in clinical outcome. MRI images from one patient were used to reconstruct a human atrial anatomical model, and fibrotic tissue was manually added to represent the arrhythmia substrate. AF was induced with standard protocols used in clinical practice. 2C3L and stepwise were then used to test the efficacy of arrhythmia termination in our model. The results showed that re-entries induced in our model could not be terminated by using either 2C3L or the stepwise protocol. Although some of the induced re-entries were terminated, others emerged in new areas. Ablation using only the 2C3L or stepwise method was not sufficient to terminate all re-entries in our model, which may partially explain the poor long-term arrhythmiafree outcomes in clinical practice. Our findings also suggest that computational heart modelling is an important tool to assist in the establishment of optimal ablation strategies.

Abstract:The normal multi-channel adaptive filtering algorithm has a large data computation,thus takes so long a time to achieve convergence and has a low efficiency.A multi-channel spatial adaptive filtering algorithm based on spatial filtering and least mean square(LMS) adaptive filtering was proposed.Formulas were derived and vibration active control experiments on a circular cylindrical shell with uniform inside ribs were made under the background of periodic noise and white noise.The results showed that the spatial filtering technique greatly inhibits the high frequency components of the noise,enhances the data sampling precision,and reduces the data computation of the multi-channel adaptive filter.The proposed algorithm enhances the learning efficiency and the convergence rate of the adaptive filtering algorithm,to a certain extent,resolves the space confusion problem of the structure control and improves the area noise control effect of the vibration active control.It is simple,accurate and effective.
Simulation of Non-Transmural Ablation Lines That Effectively Block Electrical Signal Propagation in the Heart

Abstract:Atrial fibrillation (AF), the most common cardiac rhythm disorder, increases patient mortality and social burdens. To achieve a permanent cure for AF, catheter-based radiofrequency ablation destroys the ability of local cardiac tissue to conduct electrical signals, thus terminating the arrhythmia. It is generally assumed that only lesions that penetrate the whole thickness of the heart wall can block the electrical signals. However, there was no in-depth theoretical research on the relationship between ablation depths and electrical signal blocking. We use the Barkley model and the Luo-Rudy model to simulate the spiral activity during AF episodes. We find that, when the ablation depth exceeds a certain critical value, although there is still a tiny slit, the electrical signals cannot pass through, and this phenomenon can be explained by the eikonal equation. Moreover, the slit has a filtering effect. When the height of the slit is within a certain interval, the signal period detected on the other side of the ablation line is almost twice that of the wave source, which is caused by the slow conduction at the slit. In addition, we find that when the ablation line is not deep enough to completely block the passage of the spiral wave, increasing the width of the ablation line can achieve blocking. We simulate two different obstacles caused by the ablation under the no-flux boundary condition constructed by the phase-field method and under the condition of fixed potential, and get different results. The electrotonic leak current may be the main reason for this difference. These results can help clinicians understand the blocking phenomenon in ablation procedures and develop more effective ablation strategies.

Abstract:The existence of impulsive noise with alpha-stable distributions has been addressed in many applications. Some adaptive lattice algorithms that factional lower order moments of residual errors are used to updated the filter coefficients are presented. In this paper, a new recursive adaptive lattice algorithm is proposed for adaptive filtering of alpha-stable AR processes. The performance of this algorithm is compared to that of those stochastic gradient-based algorithms. It is shown that the proposed algorithm achieves a superior convergence speed with respect to the other algorithms. © 2005 IEEE.

Abstract:In the occasion of real-time requirements and harsh electromagnetic environments, currently adaptive filtering algorithm is most based on the DSP chip, using of Assembly Language and high-level language programming procedures, and the speed of processing and the performance of noise immunity are not match the requirement. LMS adaptive filter is a widely used digital signal processing algorithms. Due to the high flexibility and the high integrated of FPGA technology, this paper propose a LMS algorithm using FPGA technology to achieve it, and well used in adaptive filter, not only meet the needs of flexibility and real-time for systems, but also easy to implement, compared with other algorithms it is more simple and more reliable. It has good prospects in the field of signal processing.

Abstract:Removing the stimulation artifacts evoked by the functional electrical stimulation (FES) in electromyogram (EMG) signals is a challenge. Previous researches on stimulation artifact removal have focused on FES modulation with time-constant parameters, which has limitations when there are time-variant parameters. Therefore, considering the synchronism of muscle activation induced by FES and the asynchronism of muscle activation induced by proprioceptive nerves, we proposed a novel adaptive spatial filtering method called G-S-G. It entails fusing the Gram-Schmidt orthogonalization (G-S) and Grubbs criterion (G) algorithms to remove the FES-evoked stimulation artifacts in multi-channel EMG signals. To verify this method, we constructed a series of simulation data by fusing the FES signal with time-variant parameters and the voluntary EMG (vEMG) signal, and applied the G-S-G method to remove any FES artifacts from the simulation data. After that, we calculated the root mean square (RMS) value for both preprocessed simulation data and the vEMG data, and then compared them. The simulation results showed that the G-S-G method was robust and effective at removing FES artifacts in simulated EMG signals, and the correlation coefficient between the preprocessed EMG data and the recorded vEMG data yielded a good performance, up to 0.87. Furthermore, we applied the proposed method to the experimental EMG data with FES-evoked stimulation artifact, and also achieved good performance with both the time-constant and time-variant parameters. This study provides a new and accessible approach to resolving the problem of removing FES-evoked stimulation artifacts.

Abstract:Epicardial potential mapping is an efficient way to visualize the potential distribution on the epicardial surface. We found in our previous study, that the traditional linear interpolation used for the epicardial mapping may cause errors and distortions in reconstruction of the electric activities on the epicardial surface especially during the atrial fibrillation. In this study, we devoted on the implementation of a 3D interpolating method, and verified it in comparison with another interpolating method as well as studying of the mechanism of vagal atrial fibrillation (AF). In case studying, we analyzed the epicardial data from seven canine cardiac models using this method and found the macro-re-entry during the sustainable AF is more likely due to the dispersion of refractoriness in the myocardium and does not demonstrated the focal patterns at the beginning of AF. This indicated that the electrophysiological characteristics of myocardium might have been changed during the paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF).

Abstract:Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a complex and dangerous arrhythmia. The treatment method is still unefficient because of its unknown mechanism. The purpose of our research is to detect the electrical activity on the atria surface and therefore find the optimal technique to characterize AF for clinical application. All kinds of maps are presented clearly and the activity of sinus or AF rhythm can be seen quite differently. The active isopotential map can display the dynamic electrical conduction of the atrium as a movie. Sequentially the vectorgraph shows the direction of depolarization at every moment. Finally statistical results are also very useful for analysis on AF. Statistics of exciting frequency and correlation area show great difference in various channels during AF. "Source" or "sink" may be estimated by interval variance statistics. This study demonstrates the flexibility of the system in AF research. The statistical results can also be adopted to clearly express the characteristics of AF.

Abstract:Epicardial mapping system is an important tool in the study and treatment of cardiac arrhythmias. Surgical therapy has been applied to eliminate atrial fibrillation (AF) for almost two decades, but there is still little effect on the treatment of AF in respect that the mechanism of AF is still unknown. Further investigation into the electrophysiological properties in AF is required to develop an appropriate treatment, though radiofrequency ablation has opened the new era of therapies for AF. Nevertheless, the sequential epicardial mapping for whole-atrium will increase the benefit to understand electrical mechanism during AF. The purpose of our research is to detect the electrical activity on the atrial surface and therefore find the optimal technique or ablation procedures to prevent AF. Animal tests were operated on ten dogs in which chronic AF had been induced. In experiment whole-atrial electrodes were located on the atrial surface after the heart had been exposed. Fach 20-second sampling data during sinus or atrial fibrillation rhythm were recorded and stored for analysis. Three-dimensional dynamic maps are presented clearly and the activity of sinus or AF rhythm can be seen quite differently. The active isopotential map can display the dynamic electrical conduction of the atria as a movie. This study demonstrates the flexibility of the system in AF research
Adaptive filtering for suppression of respiratory artifact in impedance cardiography

Abstract:Impedance cardiography is a noninvasive technique, based on sensing the variation in the electrical impedance of the thorax caused by variation in the blood volume during the cardiac cycle, for monitoring the stroke volume and some other cardiovascular indices. Respiratory and motion artifacts cause baseline drift in the sensed impedance waveform, particularly during or after exercise. This paper presents an LMS-based adaptive filtering technique for suppression of respiratory artifact for improving the estimation of the indices without smearing the beat-to-beat variations. It uses a reference signal, closely related to the respiratory artifact, obtained by a least-squares approximation based B-spline fitting on the contaminated impedance cardiogram in synchronism with the respiratory phases. The technique is evaluated on signals with simulated artifacts and on signals from nine healthy subjects and five patients with cardiovascular disorders. The values of the stroke volume, estimated on beat-to-beat basis, after suppression of respiratory artifact showed a good agreement with those from Doppler echocardiography.

Abstract:this paper introduced an algorithm to track and eliminate the power line interference. The model of the algorithm came from the lock-in-amplifier (LIA) hardware circuit. Inheriting the LIA's excellency of inhibiting the noise, this algorithm could precisely detect the amplitude, frequency and phase of the interference signal in the corrupted ECG. This algorithm, which does not need to avoid the QRS complex, could track and eliminate interference signals ranging from 48Hz-52Hz. We made two experiments to test the performance of the algorithm. The first test data came from MIT-BIH, which had been corrupted by artificial interference signals. The second test data was the actual ECG signal. Both the results proved to be satisfactory.

Abstract:Epicardial mapping system is an important tool for studying electrophysiological characteristics of atrial fibrillation (AF). AF is the most common arrhythmia and is becoming more prevalent each year. Most in vivo experimental research on AF is performed by simultaneous epicardial mapping technique. An epicardial mapping system is developed to record electrical activities from 128 sites at the same time, with a spacing of 3.5-5.0 mm. The initial purpose of this research is to display the electrical signals on the whole-atrial epicardial surface and store these data for subsequent analysis. 128 unipolar electrodes arranged in eight flexible patches were adopted to detect signal on the surface of whole atrium. Each electrode patch was designed to adaptable to the corresponding epicardial surface of canine atrium. The system contained an amplifier with 128 isolated channels and a data acquisition card based on USB communication. Random acquisition duration of interested data during sinus or AF rhythm could be recorded. Animal tests were operated on four mongrel dogs, in which two were models of chronic AF. Result shows that this system can perform successfully in a surgical setting. This system may be a special and portable tool for whole-atrium epicardial mapping and therefore useful for studying AF.
Adaptive Filter Design for Suppressing the Moving Surface Interferences in Optic-Acoustic Remote Sensing

Abstract:Optic-acoustic remote sensing has been proposed to detect underwater sound signal from the air, thus providing a new method for underwater communication and detection. It exploits the fact that acoustic pressure waves propagating within the water environment cause vibrations on an air-water interface and the particle velocities can be optically detected by observing the amplitude or phase characteristics of the reflected optical beam which is emanated from a laser interferometer. This paper studies an interesting phenomenon observed from our optic-acoustic remote sensing experiments. In the hydrodynamic surface condition, the air-water interface is in motion, thus the moving water surface is a strong interference source. We design some adaptive filters such as the least mean squares (LMS), recursive least squares (RLS) and Kalman filter to suppress this interference. The designed filters are applied to the experiment raw data, and the processing results show an obviously improved signal-to-interference ratio.

Abstract:Dynamic epicardial mapping system is a useful instrument for studying electrophysiological characteristics of atrial fibrillation (AF). It is important to develop an optimal therapy for AF. The purpose of this research is to show the electrical activity on the epicardial surface of atrium and therefore find the appropriate technique or ablation procedures to prevent AF. It emphasizes on dynamic three-dimensional (3D) holograph based on whole-atrial epicardial mapping. A system was designed to display successively either sampling waveform or the pattern of depolarization distribution. 64 unipolar electrodes arranged in eight flexible patches were adopted to detect signals. They can be located respectively on the surface of posterior and anterior LA or RA, and pulmonary veins (4 patches). Each electrode patch was designed to adaptable to the corresponding epicardial surface of canine atrium. Animal tests were operated on ten dogs in which chronic AF had been induced. Each 20-second sampling data during sinus or AF rhythm were recorded and stored for analysis. Multilevel B-splines were applied to compute the whole atria surface through a set of irregularly spaced point. Thus the 3D isopotential map was drawn to reflect the conduction of depolarization wave dynamically during AF. The propagation of electrical activity was different during sinus and AF rhythm. The results demonstrate that the system could find the pathway of AF through 3D dynamic exhibition. Nevertheless, 64 sites are not enough to detect the electrical activity thoroughly. A multi-site epicardial mapping system more than 128 channels is being developed for more exact mapping.

Abstract:In dynamic ECG signals, EMG interference is a common type of noise and overlaps with the ECG signal spectrum. Herein, we propose an EMG-filtering method that combines an adaptive wavelet-Wiener filter and an adaptive moving average filter. First, the R-peaks detection method is used to divide the signal into individual heartbeats, and wavelet threshold processing is used to evaluate signal-to-noise ratio. The wavelet-Wiener filter’s parameters are then set adaptively according to the SNR, and the resulting adaptive wavelet-Wiener filter is applied to each heartbeat. Next, the low frequency components between two heartbeats are windowed to calculate standard deviation, and the order of the moving average filter is set adaptively according to the estimated SNR and standard deviation. Finally, a moving average filter is applied to the low frequency components to filter residual EMG noise. Before and after applying the moving average filter, splicing and discarding are performed on both sides of the low frequency components, effectively preventing distortion at the transition between the high and low frequency components. We evaluated the proposed method’s performance using different ECG databases, including arrhythmia and dynamic ECG signals with motion artifacts, and compared its performance with that of other methods. Experimental results show that the proposed method can significantly improve SNR and effectively preserve clinical information, especially in environments with severe noise. The proposed method utilizes the advantages of both applied techniques to reduce the noise in ECG signals with minimal distortion and can be used as an effective tool for denoising ECG signals.

Abstract:Spatially cyclic disturbances exist widely in rotating machines. They usually have fixed spatial cycles rather than constant time periods, which affect the stationarity of angular speed tracking. An input matching least mean square (LMS) adaptive filter (IMLMS-AF) is proposed to cope with the effects of spatially cyclic disturbances. The IMLMS-AF sets a part of the inputs as spatially cyclic signals for disturbance rejection and forms another part as a time-dependent function for reference tracking. Furthermore, an updated law and convergence of the pending weights are given. The system's stability is proved by combining the instantaneous gradient with Lyapunov theory. Moreover, the IMLMS-AFs are parallelized to reject disturbance with multiple components and reference tracking. The effectiveness and superiority of the proposed control method are verified and compared with other methods by simulations and experiments.

Abstract:Objective To explore a method for real-time pretreatment and character extraction of epicardial signals and promote the research on the electrophysiological mechanism of atrial fibrillation (AF).Methods Firstly,an analysis was made to get the properties of epicardial signals. Then,a method based on template matching was used to extract atrial activities from epicardial signals. At last,the feature points of atrial activities could be recognized.Results The correctness of recognizing feature points of sinus rhythm and AF were 99.7% and 97.0% respectively. Furthermore,only 1~2 s were cost to compute a 10-second data record with this method.Conclusion The proposed method can extract crucial information about atrium depolarization from epicardial signals and is adequate for online analysis.

Abstract:Some recently researches have showed that cardiac electrical activities are chaotic during ventricular fibrillation (VF) [1]. It is very difficult to realize the originations and evolvements of these complex activities by used of non-simultaneous mapping techniques. Simultaneous multiple sites epicardial mapping is one of the precise mapping techniques developed in recent years. Fudan University has designed a novel 64/176-channel epicardial mapping system [2]. The new design includes a multi-electrodes patch, 64-channel ECG (electrocardiogram) signal amplifier, 80-channel A/D converter and a PC (personal computer). It uses finite hardware resources to detect depolarization wave from any way, any direction wherever in the whole mapping area. In this article we will discuss the characteristics of the mapping system and some interesting results we have obtained from the animal trials by use of this system.
