Abstract:Objective Early diagnosis of juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) facilitates earlier more aggressive therapy and could improve outcome. Recognition of the features of JIA on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) will improve disease detection and expedite treatment. This study aims to highlight the relevant MRI features. Methods Forty-two joints of 42 patients with JIA were included in this study. MRI examinations of the knee joints were performed on 42 children with clinically confirmed JIA. All patients met the International League for Rheumatology (ILAR) diagnostic criteria for JIA. Forty-two patients with JIA included 18 female and 24 male and with a mean age of 10.5 years old (ranged from 5 to 16 year old). Results The results showed that various degrees of abnormal changes were found in MR images of all the knee joints of 42 JIA patients (100%). The major manifestations of MR imaging included synovial hyperplasia and pannus formation, joint effusion, bone marrow oedma, adnormality of signal and shape of meniscus, soft tissue swelling, cartilage destruction, popliteal lymphagogue, et al. Conclusion Synovial hypertrophy and joint effusions are the most frequent MR findings of knees in juvenile idiopathic arthritis;Cartilage and bone erosion are uncommonly findings on MR imaging.
