The Plasma Matrix Metalloproteinase-3 Increased in Patients with Alzheimer's Disease

Abstract:Objective To investigate the plasma levels of matrix metalloproteinase-3 (MMP-3) in Alzheimer′s disease(AD).Methods Thirty patients with Altheimer′s disease, 27 patients with vascular dementia(VD) and 26 healthy controls were involved in the study. The plasma MMP-3 was measured with enzyme-linked immunosorbene assay sandwich method.Results The plasma levels of MMP-3 in AD patients (5.8±1.2)×104 U/L were higher than that in normal controls(4.8±0.8)×104 U/L;P0.001and VD patients(5.3±0.8)×104 U/L; P0.05. And the difference between VD and normal controls was statistically significant (P0.05). In severe AD patients Mini-mental State Examination (MMSE)≤10, the plasma levels of MMP-3 were higher than that in moderate (MMSE10, ≤20) and mild (MMSE 20, 24) AD patients (P0.05). There was negative relationship of MMP-3 and MMSE score in AD patients (r=-0.450, P0.05).Conclusions MMP-3 might be involved in the pathology of AD and plasma MMP-3 levels may be regarded as a marker to distinguish AD and VD.
