Abstract:Objective To investigate the relationship of vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF) and microvessel density(MVD) with liver metastasis in colorectal cancer. Methods In 88 cases of colorectal cancer, preoperative plasma levels and tumor tissue content of VEGF were assessed by using ELISA-kits.Tissue samples were also immunohistochemically examined for the VEGF and FⅧ/RA expression and counting for MVD was performed by using Weidner method. Results There were significant associations between plasma VEGF levels and liver metastasis and TNM stage.Tumor tissue VEGF content was correlated to tumor invasion, lymph nodal involvement, liver metastasis and TNM stage.A significant correlation was found between the expression of VEGF and liver metastasis. The positive correlation between VEGF and MVD was also detected.Preoperative plasma VEGF levels, tumor VEGF content,VEGF positive rate and MVD were higher in patients with liver metastasis than in those without liver metastasis. Conclusion In human colorectal carcinoma,VEGF and MVD are significantly associated with tumor progression and may be useful predictors for liver metastasis.
