Abstract:In 2003, Tuan showed a finiteness theorem for block-transitive point-imprimitive 3- (k(k−1)2+1,k,λ) designs. As a generalization of this result, we consider the block-transitive point-imprimitive 3- (v,k,λ) designs with v . Let D=(P,B) be a 3- (v,k,λ) design admitting G as a block-transitive point-imprimitive automorphism group, and G preserve a partition C of the points into d imprimitivity classes of size c , here v=wk(k−1)s+1 , s,w are two positive integers with gcd(s,w)=1 and 2w . We prove that, for a given positive integer s , there are only finitely many numbers v such that there exist nontrivial block-transitive point-imprimitive 3- (v,k,λ) designs with c,d≥3 . Moreover, we obtain the classification for this type of designs when s≤10 .

Abstract:A spherical t-design is a finite subset X in the unit sphere Sn-1 subset of R-n which replaces the value of the integral on the sphere of any polynomial of degree at most t by the average of the values of the polynomial on the finite subset X. Generalizing the concept of spherical designs, Neumaier and Seidel (1988) defined the concept of Euclidean t-design in R-n as a finite set X in R-n for which Sigma(p)(i=1)(w(X-i)/(\S-i\)) integral(Si) f (x)d sigma(i)(x) = Sigma(x is an element of X) w(x)f (x) holds for any polynomial f (x) of deg(f) <= t, where {S-i, 1 <= i <= p} is the set of all the concentric spheres centered at the origin and intersect with X, X-i = X boolean AND S-i, and w : X --> R->0 is a weight function of X. (The case of X subset of Sn-1 and with a constant weight corresponds to a spherical t-design.) Neumaier and Seidel (1988), Delsarte and Seidel (1989) proved the (Fisher type) lower bound for the cardinality of a Euclidean 2e-design. Let Y be a subset of R-n and let P-e(Y) be the vector space consisting of all the polynomials restricted to Y whose degrees are at most e. Then from the arguments given by Neumaier-Seidel and Delsarte-Seidel, it is easy to see that \X\ >= dim(P-e(S)) holds, where S = boolean OR S-p(i=1)i. The actual lower bounds proved by Delsarte and Seidel holds, where S = UP are better than this in some special cases. However as designs on S, the bound dim(P-e(S)) is natural and universal. In this point of view, we call a Euclidean 2e-design X with \X\ = dim(P-e(S)) a tight 2e-design on p concentric spheres. Moreover if dim(P-e(S)) = dim(P-e(R-n))(= ((n+e)(e))) holds, then we call X a Euclidean tight 2e-design. We study the properties of tight Euclidean 2e-designs by applying the addition formula on the Euclidean space. Furthermore, we give the classification of Euclidean tight 4-designs with constant weight. It is possible to regard our main result as giving the classification of rotatable designs of degree 2 in R-n in the sense of Box and Hunter (1957) with the possible minimum size ((n+2)(2)). We also give examples of nontrivial Euclidean tight 4-designs in R-2 with nonconstant weight, which give a counterexample to the conjecture of Neumaier and Seidel (1988) that there are no nontrivial Euclidean tight 2e-designs even for the nonconstant weight case for 2e >= 4.

Abstract:Bose proved the inequality $b\geq v+r-1$ for resolvable balanced incomplete block designs (RBIBDs) and Kageyama improved it for RBIBDs which are not affine resolvable. In this note we prove a new lower bound on the number of blocks $b$ that holds for all BIBDs. We further prove that for a significantly large number of BIBDs our bound is tighter than the bounds given by the inequalities of Bose and Kageyama.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{D}$ be a non-trivial $G$-block-transitive $3$-$(v,k,1)$ design, where $T\leq G \leq \mathrm{Aut}(T)$ for some finite non-abelian simple group $T$. Abstract:We study 2- ( v , k , λ ) designs D = ( P , B ) admitting a flag-transitive automorphism group G, where k = p 2 or p 3 , and p is prime. We prove that if k = p 2 , then G must be point-primitive, and G is of affine or almost simple type except for two examples. If k = p 3 , and G is point-primitive, then G is of affine, almost simple, or product type with G ≤ H ≀ S 2 acting on P = Δ × Δ , where H is a primitive group on Δ. Furthermore, if G is point-imprimitive with a system Σ of imprimitivity consisting of d classes of size c, we determine the parameters ( v , k , μ , c , d ) , where μ is the size of the nonempty set B ∩ C with B ∈ B and C ∈ Σ . Moreover, some infinite families of flag-transitive 2- ( v , p 3 , λ ) designs are also constructed.

Abstract:A design is said to be super‐simple if the intersection of any two blocks has at most two elements. A design with index tλ is said to be λt ‐decomposable, if its blocks can be partitioned into nonempty collections Bi , 1≤i≤t , such that each Bi with the point set forms a design with index λ . In this paper, it is proved that there exists a 23 ‐decomposable super‐simple (v,4,6) ‐BIBD (balanced incomplete block design) if and only if v≥16 and v≡1(mod3) .

Packing Designs with large block size

Abstract:Given positive integers $v,k,t$ and $\lambda$ with $v \geq k \geq t$, a {packing design} PD$_{\lambda}(t,k,v)$ is a pair $(V,\mathcal{B})$, where $V$ is a $v$-set and $\mathcal{B}$ is a collection of $k$-subsets of $V$ such that each $t$-subset of $V$ appears in at most $\lambda$ elements of $\mathcal{B}$. The maximum size of a PD$_{\lambda}(t,k,v)$ is called the {packing number}, denoted PDN$_{\lambda}(t,k,v)$. In this paper we consider packing designs with $t=2$ and $k$ large (linear) relative to $v$. We provide a new bound on the packing number: if $n \geq \lambda+2$ and $nk-\binom{n}{\lambda+1} \leq \lambda v < (n+1)k-\binom{n+1}{\lambda+1}$, then PDN$_{\lambda}(2,k,v) \leq n$. When $\lambda=1$ this is equivalent to the second Johnson bound. We show that this bound is met when $\lambda=1$ and $n$ is a positive integer, and when $\lambda=2$ and $2 \leq n \leq 6$. We also consider a directed variant and show that for the cases we consider, this has the same packing number as the undirected case with $\lambda=2$.

Implications of Line-Transitivity for Designs

Abstract:For a t-design D(t≥2) transitivity of a group G of automorphisms on the blocks (or lines) of D implies transitivity on points. Delandtsheer and Doyen proved in 1989 that if in addition the group G leaves invariant a non-trivial partition of the v points, that is, G is point-imprimitive, then v is bounded above by ((2k) - 1)2, where k is the block size. Such designs may be 2-designs, or 3-designs, and we discuss a recent proof by Mann and Tuan of a conjecture of Cameron and the author that for a block-transitive, point-imprimitive 3-design, the number v of points is bounded above by (2k) + 1. The subclass of line-transitive pointimprimitive 2-designs that are linear spaces have also received much attention: apart from finite projective planes, there are exactly 469 known examples and they all have one of two sets of parameters: (v, k) = (91,6) or (729, 8). Efforts to obtain restrictions on the parameters and the structure of the group G may lead to new constructions of line-transitive, point-imprimitive linear spaces.

Abstract:Tang and Ding [IEEE IT 67 (2021) 244-254] studied the class of BCH codes $mathcal {C}_{(q,q+1,4,1)}$ and their dual codes with $q=2^{m}$ and established that the codewords of the minimum (or the second minimum) weight in these codes support 4-designs or 3-designs. Motivated by this, we further investigate the codewords of the next adjacent weight in such codes and discover more infinite classes of $t$ -designs with $t=3,4$ . In particular, we prove that codewords of weight 7 in $mathcal {C}_{(q,q+1,4,1)}$ support 4-designs for odd $m geqslant 5$ and they support 3-designs for even $m geqslant 4$ , which provide infinite classes of simple $t$ -designs with new parameters. Another significant class of $t$ -designs we produce in this paper has complementary designs with parameters 4-$(2^{2s+1}+ 1,5,5)$ ; these designs have the smallest index among all the known simple 4-$(q+1,5,lambda)$ designs derived from codes for prime powers $q$ ; and they are further proved to be isomorphic to the 4-designs admitting the projective general linear group PGL$(2,2^{2s+1})$ as the automorphism group constructed by Alltop in 1969.

Abstract:Let $\D_{v,b,k}$ denote the family of all connected block designs with $v$ treatments and $b$ blocks of size $k$. Let $d\in\D_{v,b,k}$. The replication of a treatment is the number of times it appears in the blocks of $d$. The matrix $C(d)=R(d)-\frac{1}{k}N(d)N(d)^\top$ is called the information matrix of $d$ where $N(d)$ is the incidence matrix of $d$ and $R(d)$ is a diagonal matrix of the replications. Since $d$ is connected, $C(d)$ has $v-1$ nonzero eigenvalues $\mu_1(d),...,\mu_{v-1}(d)$. Let $\D$ be the class of all binary designs of $\D_{v,b,k}$. We prove that if there is a design $d^*\in\D$ such that (i) $C(d^*)$ has three distinct eigenvalues, (ii) $d^*$ minimizes trace of $C(d)^2$ over $d\in\D$, (iii) $d^*$ maximizes the smallest nonzero eigenvalue and the product of the nonzero eigenvalues of $C(d)$ over $d\in\D$, then for all $p>0$, $d^*$ minimizes $(\sum_{i=1}^{v-1}\mu_i(d)^{-p})^{1/p}$ over $d\in\D$. In the context of optimal design theory, this means that if there is a design $d^*\in\D$ such that its information matrix has three distinct eigenvalues satisfying the condition (ii) above and that $d^*$ is E- and D-optimal in $\D$, then $d^*$ is $\Phi_p$-optimal in $\D$ for all $p>0$. As an application, we demonstrate the $\Phi_p$-optimality of certain group divisible designs. Our proof is based on the method of KKT conditions in nonlinear programming.

Abstract:We consider playing the game of Tic‐Tac‐Toe on block designs BIBD( v , k , λ ) and transversal designs TD( k , n ) . Players take turns choosing points and the first player to complete a block wins the game. We show that triple systems, BIBD( v , 3 , λ ) , are a first‐player win if and only if v ≥ 5 . Further, we show that for k = 2 , 3 , TD( k , n ) is a first‐player win if and only if n ≥ k . We also consider a weak version of the game, called Maker–Breaker, in which the second player wins if they can stop the first player from winning. In this case, we adapt known bounds for when either the first or second player can win on BIBD( v , k , 1 ) and TD( k , n ) , and show that for Maker–Breaker, BIBD( v , 4 , 1 ) is a first‐player win if and only if v ≥ 16 . We show that TD( 4 , 4 ) is a second‐player win, and so the second player can force a draw in the regular game by playing the same strategy.

Abstract:A notion of $t$-designs in the symmetric group on $n$ letters was introduced by Godsil in 1988. In particular $t$-transitive sets of permutations form a $t$-design. We derive special lower bounds for $t=1$ and $t=2$ by a power moment method. For general $n,t$ we give a %linear programming lower bound . For $n\ge 4$ and $t=2,$ this bound is strong enough to show a lower bound on the size of such $t$-designs of $n(n-1)\dots (n-t+1),$ which is best possible when sharply $t$-transitive sets of permutations exist. This shows, in particular, that tight $2$-designs do not exist.

Abstract:A design is said to be super‐simple if the intersection of any two blocks has at most two elements. A design with index λ is said to be completely reducible, if its blocks can be partitioned into nonempty collections B i , 1 ≤ i ≤ λ , such that each B i together with the point set forms a design with index unity. In this paper, it is proved that there exists a completely reducible super‐simple (CRSS) (v , 4 , 4 ) balanced incomplete block design ((v , 4 , 4 ) ‐BIBD for short) if and only if v ≥ 13 and v ≡ 1 or 4(mod 12 ) . A q ‐ary constant weight code (CWC) of length v with weight w and distance d is denoted as a (v , d , w ) q code. The maximum size of a (v , d , w ) q code is denoted as A q(v , d , w ) , and the (v , d , w ) q codes achieving this size are called optimal. CRSS designs with index q − 1 are closely related to q ‐ary CWCs. By using the results of CRSS (v , 4 , 4 ) ‐BIBDs, A 5(v , 6 , 4 ) s are determined for all v ≡ 0 , 1 , 3 , 4(mod 12 ) , v ≥ 12 .

Infinite families $2$-designs from binary projective three-weight codes

Abstract:Combinatorial designs are closely related to linear codes. In recent year, there are a lot of $t$-designs constructed from certain linear codes. In this paper, we aim to construct $2$-designs from binary three-weight codes. For any binary three-weight code $\mathcal{C}$ with length $n$, let $A_{n}(\mathcal{C})$ be the number of codewords in $\mathcal{C}$ with Hamming weight $n$, then we show that $\mathcal{C}$ holds $2$-designs when $\mathcal{C}$ is projective and $A_{n}(\mathcal{C})=1$. Furthermore, by extending some certain binary projective two-weight codes and basing on the defining set method, we construct two classes of binary projective three-weight codes which are suitable for holding $2$-designs.

Abstract:According to Delsarte, Goethals, and Seidel, a nonempty subset X of the set of unit vectors in the real vector space Rd of dimension d is called a tight spherical t-design if (i) Σα∈X W(α) = 0 for all homogeneous harmonic polynomials W(α) in Rd of degree 1,2,…,t, and (ii) |X|=(d+e−1d−1)+(d+e−2d−1), |X|=2(d+e−1d−1) for t = 2e and t = 2e + 1, respectively. In this paper, we show that if t = 2e, e ⩾ 3 or t = 2e + 1, e ⩾ 4, and if there exists a tight spherical t-design, then the dimension d is bounded by a certain function depending only on t.

Abstract:The concept of relative t-designs for Q-polynomial association schemes is due to Delsarte (Philips Res Rep 32:373–411, 1997). We formulate Fisher type lower bounds as well as the concept of tight relative 2- and 4-designs very explicitly for binary Hamming association schemes H(n, 2). Then we discuss some examples of tight relative 2- and 4-designs on H(n, 2) in this sense, in connection with the work of Woodall (Proc Lond Math Soc (3) 20:669–687, 1970), Enomoto-Ito-Noda (Osaka J Math 16:39–43, 1979), and others. The present paper is expected to be the first of a series of our studies of tight relative t-designs on Q-polynomial association schemes in a more general context.

Abstract:Motivated by the similarities between the theory of spherical $t$-designs and that of $t$-designs in $Q$-polynomial association schemes, we study two versions of relative $t$-designs, the counterparts of Euclidean $t$-designs for $P$- and/or $Q$-polynomial association schemes. We develop the theory based on the Terwilliger algebra, which is a noncommutative associative semisimple $\mathbb{C}$-algebra associated with each vertex of an association scheme. We compute explicitly the Fisher type lower bounds on the sizes of relative $t$-designs, assuming that certain irreducible modules behave nicely. The two versions of relative $t$-designs turn out to be equivalent in the case of the Hamming schemes. From this point of view, we establish a new algebraic characterization of the Hamming schemes.

Abstract:Relative $t$-designs in the $n$-dimensional hypercube $\mathcal{Q}_n$ are equivalent to weighted regular $t$-wise balanced designs, which generalize combinatorial $t$-$(n,k,\lambda)$ designs by allowing multiple block sizes as well as weights. Partly motivated by the recent study on tight Euclidean $t$-designs on two concentric spheres, in this paper we discuss tight relative $t$-designs in $\mathcal{Q}_n$ supported on two shells. We show under a mild condition that such a relative $t$-design induces the structure of a coherent configuration with two fibers. Moreover, from this structure we deduce that a polynomial from the family of the Hahn hypergeometric orthogonal polynomials must have only integral simple zeros. The Terwilliger algebra is the main tool to establish these results. By explicitly evaluating the behavior of the zeros of the Hahn polynomials when they degenerate to the Hermite polynomials under an appropriate limit process, we prove a theorem which gives a partial evidence that the non-trivial tight relative $t$-designs in $\mathcal{Q}_n$ supported on two shells are rare for large $t$.
