Abstract:The Langmuir and Langmuir–Blodgett (LB) films of a novel crowned [60]fullero-pyrrolidine(CFP) were produced in different conditions. Macroscopic second-harmonic generation of the LB film was investigated by means of AM1 Hamiltonian as well as experiments. The monolayer LB film displayed a periodic fringe pattern. A linear dependence of second-harmonic intensity on the number of layers was observed. The second-order molecular susceptibility χ(2) and hyperpolarizability β were evaluated to be 3.2×10−8 and 8.3×10−29esu.

Abstract:Two C-60 derivatives, dodecylaminofullerene (DAF) and multihydroxydodecylaminofullerene (MHDAF) were prepared. The isotherms showed that the limiting molecular areas of DAF and MHDAF are around 60 Angstrom(2) and 64.7 Angstrom(2) respectively, which suggests that the aggregations of the molecules at the air-water interface are decreased compared with that of C-60. The best transfer ratio could be enhanced to 0.7-1 by using the vertical dipping method. The structural characteristics of DAF Langmuir-Blodgett (LB ) films were studied by W-Vis spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The second-order susceptibility chi((2)) and molecular hyperpolarizability (beta) of 12-layer LB films of DAF are determined to be 3.26 x 10(-6) esu and 1.46 x 10(-28) esu respectively.

Abstract:The structure features of the LB films of substituted fullerene C60-Be were investigated by ��-A isotherm, small angle X ray diffraction (SAXD) and optical measurements. Pure C60-Be molecules was found to exist at the air-water interface in a bulk phase. NC was used as an inert material to construct mixed C60-Be/NC LB films which had a much better quality than the pure C60-Be LB films. The measurements show that the structural improvement in the mixed films is realized by insertion of the C60-Be molecules between two hydrophobic chains of the NC molecules. The relatively large third-order nonlinear susceptibility equal to 2.1��10-11 esu is deduced. The NC molecules have attractive features as an inert material in fabrication of LB multilayers made from optically nonlinear materials with hydrophobic long tails or ball-like structures.

Abstract:A new 4-acetalphenyl substituted C60-pyrrolidine derivative C60(C12H17NO2) (1) was prepared and characterized by 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, FDMS, FTIR and UV-vis spectra. Its Langmuir film study indicates that it can form stable monolayer at the air/water interface, which can be transferred onto hydrophilic substrates to form LB films. The LB monolayer exhibits weak second harmonic generation (SHG). Its second-order susceptibility χpp(2) is evaluated to be 6 × 10−9 esu.

Abstract:Langmuir and Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films of two kinds of C-60 derivatives with the substituents which have methoxycarbonyl (C-60(I)) and a carboxylic group (C-60(II)) were investigated, respectively. The photovoltaic behaviors and charge-transfer process of their LB films on n-type Si substrates and their powders were studied by surface photovoltage spectra (SPS). For the electronic effect caused by different electron-withdrawing groups, they exhibited different photovoltaic behaviors, and the reverse response values of SPS were obtained when the C-60-derivatives powders contact with indium tin oxide substrates. The reason was that the relatively strong electron-withdrawing substituent shifted the molecular orbital levels to lower energy, which caused the opposite surface band bending. When deposited on n-Si substrates, the two kinds of C-60-derivative LB films both exhibited the same increment on the direct transition of n-Si. Furthermore, the structural characterization of C-60(II) LB film was studied in detail by measuring the pi-A isotherm, FTIR, and small-angle X-ray diffraction. It revealed that this kind of C-60 derivative formed micellar aggregates. The hydrophobic cores of the C-60 moiety gave an actual cluster with the hydrophilic substituents sticking out.

Abstract:Three novel fullerene derivatives containing a C60-fluorene core and thiophenyl, terthiophenyl and tetrathiophenyl groups grafted at the 2-position of the fluorene ring, respectively, were synthesized and characterized. Their photophysical and electrochemical properties were investigated systematically. The results showed that their UV-vis absorption bands in the range of 350–500 nm were much wider and stronger than that of the traditional fullerene derivative PC61BM, and the LUMO energy levels of the synthesized fullerene derivatives were gradually up-shifted by increasing of the number of thiophene rings in the oligothiophene units.

Abstract:Third-order nonlinear susceptibilities {chi}{sub xxxx}{sup (3)} (-3{omega}; {omega}, {omega}, {omega}) have been deduced by measuring third-harmonic generation in Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films of 1-benzyl-9-hydrofullerene-60 (C{sub 60}-Be). The structural features of the condensed layer at the air-water interface and LB films of the C{sub 60}-Be were investigated by small angle x-ray diffraction (SAXD) and optical measurements. The third-order nonlinear susceptibilities ({chi}{sup (3)}) were obtained by measuring the THG intensities in LB films of C{sub 60}-Be and comparing with that of CS{sub 2} used as the reference. The value of {chi}{sub xxxx}{sup (3)} (2.1 x 10{sup -11} esu) was deduced at a 65 nm thick films. The {chi}{sup (3)} is attributed to a three-photon near resonance at the energy level of 29410 cm{sup -1}. A new-type of two-chain amphiphilic molecule 1,10-bistearyl-4,6,13, 15-tetra-18-nitrogencrown-6 (NC) was used as insert material to construct mixed C{sub 60}-Be/NC LB films. Our {pi}-A, UV-visible absorption and SAXD measurements showed that the structural improvement in the mixed C{sub 60}-Be/NC LB films was realized by insertion of the C{sub 60}-Be molecules between the two hydrophobic chains of the NC molecules.

Abstract:Two new pyrrolidinofullerene derivatives and their corresponding dimers are prepared. All these compounds form stable Langmuir–Blodgett (LB) films, which can be readily transferred onto an indium-tin-oxide (ITO) electrode. The photoelectric conversion ability of the bis-fullerenes is more than twice that of the mono-fullerenes.
Film Formation Behavior of the Endohedral Metallofullerene DY@C82

Abstract:The Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) film formation behavior of the endohedral metallofullerene Dy@C82 was studied at the air/water and Ar/water interfaces. The LB film constructed at the Ar/water interface (2-4 layers) was found to be thinner and more uniform than at the air/water interface (4-6 layers). Particulate aggregates were observed in the LB films, which contrasts the extended wire networks formed by direct evaporation of the metallofullerene solution on a quartz plate. The UV-Vis absorption peaks are blue-shifted for the LB film deposited in air, which is attributed to the partial oxidation of the metallofullerene balls. They are red-shifted, however, for the LB film at the Ar/water interface presumably due to the interaction between the pristine metallofullerenes.

Abstract:The amphiphilic C-60-dendrimer conjugates 1 and 2 with one and two glycodendron headgroups, respectively, form stable, ordered monomolecular Langmuir layers at the air-water interface. The bulky glycodendron headgroups in 1 and 2 are very effective in suppressing fullerene aggregation, resulting in reversible compression and expansion behavior. The absence of fullerene aggregation was also revealed by the UV-vis spectra of the Langmuir monolayers and by Brewster angle microscopy. The monolayers of 1 and 2 were transferred successfully as X-type Langmuir-Blodgett films onto quartz slides; such films could have potential applications in optical technology and as biosensors for glycoproteins.

Abstract:The Langmuir films of a fullerene dicarboxylic acid derivative I, C60(HOOCCHNH2CHCOOH)CF3SO3H (FDA), at the air/water interface have been investigated. FDA formed a stable monolayer on pure water when dilute solution (1.04 x 10(-5) mol/L) was used as the spreading solution. The monolayer formation on various subphases was investigated, including solutions containing different monovalent (Na+, Ag+) and divalent (Ca2+, Cd2+, Cu2+) cations. The introduction of these cations makes the monolayer more stable. The limiting molecular area is also dependent on the pH of the subphase. The surface pressure versus area isotherms at different temperature clearly indicate that FDA molecules easily aggregate at high temperature. The monolayer and multilayer LB films of FDA were deposited on quartz and glass substrates from Ca2+, Cd2+, Cu2+, or Cu2+/Phen solution subphase, and their UV-vis and XPS spectra were obtained. The data showed that for Cd2+ and Cu2+/Phen subphase the cation can be transferred onto the substrates together with FDA but not the other two. The photoelectrochemical behavior of FDA on an ITO electrode was investigated, which showed that the photocurrent is cathodic. Oxygen and negative bias are beneficial factors for the photocurrent generation. The external quantum yield is ca. 4%. Copyright 1998 Academic Press.
Preparation, Characterization, and Photoelectrochemistry of Langmuir−Blodgett Films of the Endohedral Metallofullerene Dy@C82 Mixed with Metallophthalocyanines

Abstract:Stable Langmuir-Blodgett films of the endohedral metallofullerene Dy@C-82 mixed with metallophthalocyanine (MPc = copper tetra-tert-butylphthalocyanine (1) and M octakis(octyloxy)phthalocyanine, M = copper (2) and zinc (3)) are fabricated from the N-2/water interface at a molar ratio of 1:1. Optical, electrochemical, and photoelectrochemical properties of these films have been studied. The packing of Dy@C-82/MPc is found to be dependent on the substituents and the central metal ion of MPc, resulting in different relative orientations of the MPc's macrocyclic ring plane and the metallofullerene ball in the Langmuir films. Steady anodic photocurrent responses have been demonstrated for the Dy@C-82/MPc mixture films with enhanced quantum yields compared to the pure forms of both MPc and Dy@C-82. Dy@C-82/2 (or 3) are shown to outperform Dy@C-82/1, giving quantum yields up to 7-8% under appropriate conditions. Both ground-state charge transfer and photoinduced charge transfer between Dy@C82 and the octasubstituted MPcs 2 and 3 are proposed. Comparative studies with C-60 have also been conducted.
Third-order nonlinear optical effect and mechanism in C-AA LB film

Abstract:In this paper the preparation and nonlinear characteristics of C60-AA LB films have been studied. The phenomena of FPCWs were observed in the 3D-DFWM experiment. By using the relative measurement technique, it was determined that the X(3) value of C60-AA LB films was as large as (1.8+0.4)��10-8 esu. The nonlinear mechanism for DFWM in C60-AA LB films was also discussed. It is shown that the third-order optical nonlinearity of LB films is mainly due to the saturable absorption effect. The results obtained are valuable for the development of a new kind of nonlinear optical materials and applications of C60 material of LB films in photonics.

Abstract:The formation of molecular aggregate behavior of the substituted fullerene 1,3,6,11,13,18,28,31-octabromofullerene-C60(C60Br8) at the air-water interface is described. It is shown that C60Br8 (1.0 × 10−4M) forms a monomolecular thickness and that C60Br8 (1.0 × 10−3M) forms multilayers. The in-plane electrical conductivity of Langmuir-Blodgett films at different conditions has been measured and established to be of the order of 10−3 to 10−5 S cm−1.

Abstract:We report systematic studies of the response of C60 derivatives to electron beam irradiation. Films of fourteen different mono, tris and tetra adduct methanofullerene C60 derivatives were produced by spin coating on hydrogen terminated silicon substrates. Exposure of the films to a 20 keV electron beam substantially altered the dissolution rate of the derivative films in organic solvents such as monochlorobenzene. All of the derivatives exhibited negative tone resist behaviour with sensitivities between ∼ 8.5 × 10−4 and ∼ 4 × 10−3 C/cm2 107, much higher than that of C60. Features with widths of ∼ 20 nm were produced using these compounds, and the etch ratios of the compounds were found to be more than twice those of a standard novolac based resist (SAL601).

Abstract:Photolysis of aminopolycarboxylates with C 60 has been shown to be an effective method for the preparation of isomerically pure fullerene derivatives.A series of fullerroaminopolycar boxylate derivatives have been prepared by this method.For example,glycine esters react with C 60 to give C 60 (ROOCCHNHCHCOOR),the mechanism of which is proposed to involve complicated bond breaking and formation processes.Aminoacid esters with secondary and tertiary amino groups can add to C 60 by simply losing two H atoms.Irradiation of tetramethyl ethylenediaminetetraacetate(EDTA) with C 60 yields the EDTA containing fullerene monoadduct C 60 (MeOOCCH) 2NCH 2CH 2N(CH 2COOMe) 2.Compared to well known 1,3 dipole addition method of fulleropyrrolidine preparation,the photoreaction reported here avoids the use of aldehydes or ketones and is specially suited for the preparation of the fullerene containing complexones such as the EDTA C 60 derivative.Langmuir Blodgett film formation and the photoelectric properties of these fulleropyrrolidine ccompounds are investigated.Due to the presence of hydrophilic groups the derivatives form stable and transferable monolayer.By using metal ion sonlution as the subphase,metal complexes of the fullerocarboxylic derivatives are prepared at the air/water interface.Photoelctrical behavior of the LB film fabricated on ITO are studied under various conditions.For most of the compounds electrons flow from the electrolyte through the LB film to the ITO.The quantum yield of the fullerene derivatives can reach 8%.

Abstract:Both the Langmuir and Langmuir-Blodgett films of two C60-glycine ester derivatives, C60(C6H9NO4) (1) and C60(C8H13NO4) (2), have been prepared at the air/water interface. The Langmuir films can be readily transferred onto hydrophilic quartz substrates in Z type to form LB films. The LB film of 1 has good vertical homogeneity as indicated by UV-VIS spectra and a SHG study. The second- and third-order molecular hyperpolarizabilities β and γ have been determined to be (2.3 ± 1.0) × 10−29, 3.4 × 10−31 esu for 1 and (1.9 ± 0.8) × 10−29, 3.3 × 10−31 esu for 2, respectively.
