Abstract:Serious games are designed to educate, train, or persuade their players on specific topics and issues. While a lot of studies have sought to prove the effects of these games, the overall image and legitimization of serious games has not benefited fully from these efforts. Indicating that the issue stems from the difference between the captive audience exposed to games in effects studies and the contexts in which people come to play serious games in everyday life, the current article sketches out the research that needs to be performed before this gap can be filled. Three theoretical perspectives are offered, in turn looking at serious games as forms of (promotional) communication, personal media experiences, and technological innovations. This analysis results in insights relating to (among others), how the identity of serious games might hinder their diffusion, how expected gratifications could fail to match the intentions of these games, and what could cause someone to ‘adopt’ a serious game. Based on the insights gained by applying these lenses, potential factors are listed and linked to methodologies that could prove or disprove their importance. These methodologies involve quantitative and qualitative investigations to create a deeper picture of how potential players approach serious games. The article concludes with open questions to investigators and industry professionals generated from this process.

Abstract:This paper deals with the relationship between serious games and system dynamics. Games have been used in SD since the beginning. However, the field of serious gaming also has its own development. The purpose of this contribution is to provide a broad overview of the combination of serious gaming and SD and discuss the state of the art and promise. We first define serious game, simulation and case study and then point out how SD overlaps with them. Then we move on to define the basic components of a game and continue with an outline of important decisions and challenges of game design. After reviewing different possible purposes of SD-based simulation games, we discuss various approaches to game design with specific attention paid to learning effects. We also review the evolution of the interest for serious gaming in SD over the past 40 years. Our conclusion is that interest has oscillated between rising and declining, but that serious gaming is being recognized as an important component not only in educational settings, but also in policy design. We finish by offering important research questions for the future.

Abstract:This article is in the intersection of pedagogy, learning psychology and educational technologies. It is aim at educational researchers, pedagogues, as well as educational game developers, with the aim of providing an analysis of the potential benefits of serious games in teaching and learning. The issue we are exploring: how can serious games transform traditional teaching and learning methods to promote active and engaging pedagogy? To answer this question, we will set ourselves several objectives. First, we will define the concept of the game and its historical applications in the educational context. Then, we will analyze the implicit and explicit learning associated with the different forms of play used in education. We will also evaluate the impact of the game on pedagogy and its usefulness in the school setting. Finally, we will identify the convergences between the principles of active pedagogy and the characteristics of serious games.

Abstract:Naturally, university courses should be designed to attract students, engaging them to achieve learning goals. Toward this end, the use of Serious Games has been proposed in the literature. To address positive effects, such as content memorability and attendance rates, we propose Ambient Serious Games as games embedded in a computer-enriched environment, which is only partially perceived mentally by players. In this paper, we describe five technological key challenges that must be overcome to seamlessly and beneficially integrate an Ambient Serious Game into teaching. These challenges, derived from a scenario, focus on the technological provision and conduct of such games based on a software platform. They include (1) the integration of physical smart learning objects in heterogeneous environments under dynamic constraints, (2) the representation of abstract subject matter using smart learning objects, (3) the guided or automatic connection of all involved components, (4) the explanation of the components, their interaction, as well as the serious game itself, and (5) feedback on the game state.

Abstract:∞Transitional justice scholarship has produced a significant volume of valuable knowledge. However, there remains a challenge in transferring this knowledge to non-experts, such as students of academic programs that are not centered around the issue of TJ. It is an important challenge from the perspective of the interdisciplinary field, which should be interested in popularizing its scholarship and engaging representatives of related disciplines to engage in TJ-related research. In this article, I claim that serious games can be used to address this problem. I present a concise review of the literature devoted to the application of serious games in the social sciences, focusing specifically on the application of serious games for didactic purposes. Then, I present a game designed to tackle the challenge mentioned, which presents non-experts with TJ-associated dilemmas inspired by real-life situations and thereby demonstrates the importance of existing knowledge for solving such dilemmas.

Abstract:The video game industry plays an essential role in the entertainment sphere of our society. However, from Monopoly to Flight Simulators, serious games have also been appealing tools for learning a new language, conveying values, or training skills. Furthermore, the resurgence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and data science in the last decade has created a unique opportunity since the amount of data collected through a game is immense, as is the amount of data needed to feed such AI algorithms. This paper aims to identify relevant research lines using Serious Games as a novel research tool, especially in Computational Social Sciences. To contextualize, we also conduct a (non-systematic) literature review of this field. We conclude that the synergy between games and data can foster the use of AI for good and open up new strategies to empower humanity and support social research with novel computational tools. We also discuss the challenges and new opportunities that arise from aspiring to such lofty goals.

Abstract:Serious games (SG) or educational games are complete games designed for a specific purpose that fulfill both their classic function of entertainment and promote the learning of specific concepts or skills and optimize health care in general. In the pediatric setting, these games combine strategies to educate about health issues, promote healthy behaviors, provide therapy or medical treatment. SG have been shown to promote adherence to treatment in children with chronic diseases, reduce anxiety in those undergoing invasive medical procedures, and stimulate the development of cognitive, emotional, or psychomotor skills. However, it is important to emphasize that the success of SG in pediatrics depends to a large extent on game quality, their design based on clear objectives, and their accurate adaptation to the individual needs and preferences of patients.

Abstract:It is indisputable that games are suitable for lessons, and in this context “serious games” have a special role. The goal of the current study is to establish whether serious games are efficient in the area of vocational white collar education, whereby the following research question is asked: To what degree do serious games lead to superior learning results in comparison to traditional group work? In order to answer this question, four groups were formed, two of which took part in a serious game on the topic of “stock market” and two took part in a group work approach to the same topic. Within these different formations, the respective approach was applied at two different DQR (German Qualifications Framework) levels. Subsequently, the learning results were measured by using a uniform learning test. By means of a twofactor variance analysis, both the impact of the method as well as the DQR level were measured. Although no generally increased effectiveness of serious games as a methodology could be found over the methodology of “group work”, the analysis does show a significantly positive change in the learning effectiveness of serious games among the DQR levels, so that we can assume that serious games show increased effectiveness over group work at lower DQR levels. In line with this finding, we can speak of a “meaningful supplement” with regard to the use of serious games. However, this does not signify that this method is generally better than that of group work: a precise analysis of classes is needed in order to ascertain whether method competence has been trained sufficiently in order to make effective use of serious games.

Abstract:Serious games are defined as applied games that focus on the gamification of an experience (e.g., learning and training activities) and are not strictly for entertainment purposes. In recent years, serious games have become increasingly popular due to their ability to simultaneously educate and entertain users. In this review, we provide a comprehensive overview of the different types of digital games and expand on the serious games genre while focusing on its various applications. Furthermore, we present the most widely used game engines used in the game development industry and extend the Unity game machine advantages. Lastly, we conclude our research with a detailed comparison of the two most popular choices (Unreal and Unity engines) and their respective advantages and disadvantages while providing future suggestions for serious digital game development.

Abstract:Gamification and serious gaming have emerged as alternative approaches in learning and decision-making across various domains. In maritime education and the inland waterways sector, where traditional methods may fall short in engaging learners effectively, the development of tailored serious games presents a unique opportunity. This research assesses the educational value of a serious game designed for the maritime industry and inland waterways. The game was developed through a systematic process involving a literature review, stakeholder consultations, and expert input. The methodology included iterative design, user testing, and feedback collection from participants across various sectors. The game features tasks simulating port operations, equipment handling, and inland navigation, followed by quizzes to reinforce learning. Data analysis was performed to evaluate user engagement, knowledge retention, and satisfaction levels. Evaluation results indicate high user engagement, improved knowledge retention, and participant satisfaction. This research underlines the potential of serious games in maritime education, offering innovative solutions to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application, thereby maximizing learning outcomes and preparing individuals comprehensively for the challenges of the maritime industry and inland waterways sector.

Abstract:Serious games are educational tools which are more and more used in patient and health professional education. In this article, we discuss three main points that developers and educators need to address during the development of a serious game for health. We first explain how to develop motivating serious games by finding a point where the intrinsic and extrinsic motivations of end users can converge. Then, we propose to identify the features of serious games which enhance their learning effectiveness on the basis of a framework derived from cognitive science and called “the four pillars of learning.” Finally, we discuss issues and solutions related to the evaluation of serious games.

Abstract:SimPort is a multiplayer serious game in which the aim is to develop a new seaport area in 30 years of simulated time. It is played in a network of computers, each with its own role and set of tasks. The game has been played for over two years now, but some issues still remain. Playing SimPort should be about the content and not a challenge on getting to know the computer game. This paper describes the issues faced during the development of SimPort with respect to videogame illiteracy. It goes on to discuss the different approaches used to solve various aspects for multiple target groups. These solutions result in a smoother gaming experience, and should allow for better learning in future courses.

Abstract:Serious games or applied games are digital games applied in serious fields such as education, advertising, health, business, and the military. Currently, serious game development is mostly based on the Game Development Life Cycle (GDLC) approach. A serious game is a game product with unique characteristics that require a particular approach to its development. This paper proposes a serious game development model adapted from the Game-Based Learning Foundation. This paper’s main contribution is to enhance knowledge in the game development field and game-related application research. The proposed model was validated using the relativism approach and it was used to develop several game prototypes for universities, national companies, and the military.

Abstract:Serious Games (SGs) indicate positive effects on Preschool and Primary school students and promote a multi sensory style of learning. This review paper explores the integration of Serious Games in the area of Preschool and Primary Education, in the last decade (2006-2016). The studies were carried out on Preschool and Primary school settings, respectively. Research showed that Serious Games are able to keep all students engaged in classroom facilities, scaffolding their learning through increased motivation, independence, autonomy and resultant self-esteem. Serious Games Based Learning (GBL) has proven its added value in almost every aspect of the curriculum.

Abstract:The author presents the methodological backgrounds and underlying research design of an on-going scientific research project concerned with the scientific evaluation of serious games and/or computer-based simulation-games (SG) for advanced learning. The main questions of this research project are: 1. what are the requirements and design principles for a comprehensive social-scientific methodology for the evaluation of SG? 2. To what extend does SG contribute to advanced learning? 3. What factors contribute to, or determine this learning? 4. To what extend and under what conditions can SG- based learning be transferred to the real world (RW)? Between 2004 and 2012, several hundreds of SG-sessions in the Netherlands with twelve different SG were evaluated systematically, uniformly and quantitatively to give a data-set of 2100 respondents in higher education and in work-organizations. The author presents the research model, the quasi-experimental design and evaluation instruments. This focus in this article is on methodology and data-set to establish a proper foundation for forthcoming publications on empirical results.

Abstract:Most educational or training games, also referred to as serious games, have been developed without an underlying design theory. In order to make a contribution to the development of such a theory, we present the underlying design philosophy of Levee Patroller, a 3D first-person game used to train levee patrollers in the Netherlands. This approach stipulates that the design of a serious game is a multi-objective problem where trade-offs need to be made. Making these trade-offs takes place in a 'design space' defined by three general boundary criteria: 1. fun (game), 2. learning (pedagogy), and 3. validity (reality). The various tensions between these three criteria make it difficult to 'balance' or create harmony in a serious game. We illustrate this process with a discussion on the design of Levee Patroller. In addition, we translate the aforementioned general design criteria into a number of concrete design requirements for serious games.

Abstract:This paper reviews the use of games in geographical teaching, including prior to the emergence of computer-based (digital) games. The growing popularity of ‘serious games’ and ‘edutainment’ is addressed, focusing on their perceived advantages in classroom-based teaching. The blurring between digital games for educational purposes and games primarily for entertainment is discussed, reflecting on the popularity of SimCity and the potential of these games for learning about urban planning. This analysis champions games enabling students to play different roles and produce realistic ‘real life’ outcomes. Two examples of non-digital board games, Participology and Geogopoly, illustrate how role play broadens students' understanding of planning and human geography.

Abstract:Serious games are digital games that have an additional goal beyond entertainment. Recently, many studies have explored different quality criteria for serious games, including effectiveness and attractiveness. Unfortunately, the double mission of serious games, that is, simultaneous achievement of intended effects (serious part) and entertainment (game part), is not adequately considered in these studies. This paper aims to identify essential quality criteria for serious games. The fundamental goal of our research is to identify important factors of serious games and to adapt the existing principles and requirements from game-related literature to effective and attractive serious games. In addition to the review of the relevant literature, we also include workshop results. Furthermore, we analyzed and summarized 22 state-of-the-art serious games for education and health. The selected best-practice serious games either prove their effectiveness through scientific studies or by winning game awards. For the analysis of these games, we refer to "DIN SPEC 91380 Serious Games Metadata Format." A summarized text states quality criteria for both the serious and the game part, and especially the balance between them. We provide guidelines for high-quality serious games drawn from literature analysis and in close cooperation with domain experts.

Abstract:The authors analyze the policy discourse on the utility of games for society at the level of the European Union, and for five EU countries, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy and Norway. The ongoing study is part of a Research Roadmap developed within the GALA Network of Excellence on Serious Games (2010-2014, EU FP7). The authors identify four policy discourses on the utility of serious games that they label as Technology Enhanced Learning; Creative Innovation; Social Inclusion and Empowerment and Complex Systems. The polcies applicable to SGs in the five European countries are briely described and compared. It was seen that some countries have explicit policies for SGs (the Netherlands, Germany); whereas most of the countries only have implicit policies not directly addressing SGs but which can be used to support SGs development and use.
