Abstract:Both of the phenomenology and the Yogachara Buddhism view the structure of cognition as their object, and hence are both philosophy of consciousness someway. The Yogachara Buddhism grasped the existence and the function of‘svasamvittibhaga’in the structure of cognitions earlier than the western philosophy, though has not elevated svasamvittibhaga to such a supreme status as the latter has done, in regard of its significance and functions in cognitions. In the background of modern western philosophy, particularly of the phenomenology, the basic meaning of‘svasamvittibhaga’,in the doctrine of the four functions of cognitions in the Yogachara Buddhism, could be explored on two dimensions, that is, horizontal(static)and vertical(generating). The horizontal exploration is to analyse svasamvittibhaga in the structure of the three functions of cognitions, while the vertical is through the eight kinds of consciousness. Both explorations finally lead to an understanding of the principle functions of svasamvittibhaga in the Buddhism, both theoretic and practical.
