Abstract:Objective To study the relationship between serum total testosterone and cardiac sympathetic nerve distribution in elderly hypertensive males with cardiac hypertrophy. Methods A total of 10elderly hypertensive males were randomly selected with ages from 60to 90year old and were divided into two groups with and without cardiac hypertrophy respectively. The expression of tyrosine hydroxylase was examined by immunohistochemistry. Results An increase in norepinephrine level(Z=-2.309,P0.05)and a decrease in tyrosine hydroxylase expression were detected in hypertensive patients with cardiac hypertrophy(Z=-2.611,P0.05).The serum total testosterone level decreased in hypertensive patients with cardiac hypertrophy compared to those without cardiac hypertrophy[(2.9±0.5)vs(5.1±0.7)nmol/L,P0.05].In addition, the serum total testosterone level was closely related to tyrosine hydroxylase expression in hypertensive patients with cardiac hypertrophy, and was an independent risk factor for cardiac sympathetic innervation reduction. Conclusion In the elderly hypertensive males with cardiac hypertrophy, the reductions in serum total testosterone and cardiac sympathetic innervation were detected and serum total testosterone was closely related to cardiac sympathetic innervation.
