Abstract:Mechanistic aspects of an unusual gas-phase reaction of [LaCH2](+) with halobenzenes have been investigated using Fourier-transform ion cyclotron resonance (FTICR) mass spectrometry combined with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. In this thermal process a carbon-atom from the benzene ring, most likely the ipso-position, and the carbene ligand are coupled to form C2H2.

Abstract:The potential of carbonyl rhenium complexes in activating and coupling carbon dioxide and methane has been explored by using a combination of gas-phase experiments (FT-ICR mass spectrometry) and high-level quantum chemical calculations. While the complexes [Re(CO)(x)](++) (x = 0, 1, 3) are thermally unreactive toward CO2, [Re(CO)(2)](+) abstracts one oxygen atom from this substrate spontaneously at ambient conditions. Based on C-13 and O-18 labeling experiments, the newly generated CO ligand is preferentially eliminated, and two mechanistic scenarios are considered to account for this unexpected finding. The oxo complex [ORe(CO)(2)](+) reacts further with CH4 to produce the dihydridomethylene complex [ORe(CO)(CH2)(H)(2)](++). However, coupling of the CO and CH2 ligands to form CH2=C=O does not take place. Further, the complexes [Re(CO)(x)(CH2)](+) (x = 1, 2), generated in the thermal reaction of [Re(CO)(x)](+) (x = 1, 2) with CH4, are inert toward CO2. Mechanistic insight on the origin of this remarkable reactivity pattern has been derived from detailed quantum chemical calculations.

Abstract:Supercritical fluids have the unique characteristic of density-tuned physicochemical properties that can affect reaction rates and selectivities. We have studied homogeneously catalyzed styrene hydroformylation in supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO(2)) and have shown that the reaction rate and the regioselectivity can be varied by changes in pressure at constant temperature. This rate and selectivity change is explained in terms of the transition state theory. We have determined the partial molar volumes of the reaction products based on the Peng-Robinson equation of state for an infinite-dilution solution model, a real solution model, and a real solution model with regressed interaction coefficients. Then, the estimated partial molar volumes were used to predict the experimentally observed selectivity behavior. Through these simulations, an understanding of the reaction rate and selectivity control by adjustment of the pressure was developed.

Abstract:The Diels-Alder reaction between isoprene and methyl acrylate was carried out in supercritical carbon dioxide in the temperature range 110-1.40 degrees C and the pressure range 95.2-176.9 atm in a 300 cm(3) autoclave. The high-pressure phase behavior of the reaction mixture in the vicinity of its critical region was determined in a mixed vessel with a sight window to ensure that all the experiments were performed in the supercritical single-phase region. Kinetic data were obtained at different temperatures, pressures, and reaction times. It was observed that in the vicinity of the critical point the reaction rate constant decreases with increasing pressure. It was also determined that the reaction selectivity does not change with operating conditions. Transition-state theory was used to explain the effect of pressure on reaction rate and product selectivity. Additional experiments were conducted at constant temperature but different phase behaviors (two-phase region, liquid phase, supercritical phase) by adjusting the initial composition and pressure. It was shown that the highest reaction rate is in the supercritical region.

Abstract:The mechanisms of Glaser coupling reaction on metal surfaces have been poorly understood. Herein, we propose a reaction pathway toward surface-confined Glaser coupling which is initiated by single-molecule dehydrogenation of terminal alkyne. This is inspired by our experimental observations of alkynyl-Ag-alkynyl and alkynyl-Cu-alkynyl type organometallic intermediates in the coupling reaction of 1,1'-biphenyl,4-bromo-4'-ethynyl (BPBE) on Ag(111) and Cu(111), respectively. Theoretical calculations reveal that the dehydrogenation process of terminal ethynyl of BPBE is most likely catalyzed by a stray H adatom on Ag(111) but by a Cu adatom on Cu(111), followed by the formation of the organometallic intermediates. After the release of interstitial metal adatoms, the final C-C coupling occurs easily on Ag(111) but shows extremely low efficiency on Cu(111), due to the too strong interaction between ethynylene and the Cu(111) substrate.

Abstract:A simple and effective pinacol coupling of various aromatic aldehydes mediated by gallium in good yields has been carried out. The reaction is highly effective in water in the presence of KOH or HCl and was strongly affected by the steric environment surrounding the carbonyl group. Aliphatic aldehydes, ketones and aromatic ketones appear inert under the same reaction conditions.

Abstract:Glaser-like coupling of terminal alkynes by thermal activation is extensively used in on-surface chemistry. Here we demonstrate an intramolecular version of this reaction performed by atom manipulation. We used voltage pulses from the tip to trigger a Glaser-like coupling between terminal alkyne carbons within a custom synthesized precursor molecule adsorbed on bilayer NaCl on Cu(111). Different conformations of the precursor molecule and the product were characterized by molecular structure elucidation with atomic force microscopy and orbital density mapping with scanning tunneling microscopy, accompanied by density functional theory calculations. We revealed partially dehydrogenated intermediates providing insight into the reaction pathway.

Abstract:Cross-linking polymerization of acrylic acid in supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) was studied in a batch reactor at 50°C and 207bar with either triallyl pentaerythritol ether or tetraallyl pentaerythritol ether as the cross-linker and with 2,2′-azobis(2,4-dimethyl-valeronitrile) as the free radical initiator. All polymers were white, dry, fine powders. Scanning electron microscopy showed that the morphology of the polymer particles was not affected by cross-linking. As the cross-linker concentration was increased, the polymer glass transition temperature first decreased, then increased. Water-soluble and water-insoluble polymers were synthesized by adjusting the cross-linker concentration. Viscosity measurements showed that the polymer thickening effect strongly depended on the degree of cross-linking. Finally, cross-linking polymerization of acrylic acid in scCO2 was carried out in a continuous stirred tank reactor. The use of cross-linker decreased the monomer conversion in this system.

Abstract:The ionic liquids/sc-CO2 system were introduced in this article. Ionic liquids and sc-CO2 have been paid much attention due to their unique properties and environmental benignity. The combination of them has given out many new merits on reactions and separations. Supercritical CO2 is very soluble in ionic liquids, and can extract the non-volatile products from ionic liquids. Since the ionic liquids and the catalysts dissolved in ionic liquids are insoluble in the sc-CO2 phase, their loss in the process can be eliminated. Therefore, the ionic liquids/sc-CO2 system could be used for environmental benign processes with good reaction-separation performance.

Abstract:We developed an approach to realize the comprehensive utilization of CO2 and glycerol by smartly design a nanocatalyst, which concerns the coupling of catalytic reactions and the separation or capture process. Specifically, MgFe‐CO32‐‐LDHs with different thickness were fabricated by employing atmospheric CO2 as carbon source and an atomic‐level interface was constructed by introducing Pt single atoms to obtain series of Pt/MgFe‐LDHs nanocatalysts. During a catalytic assessment, the CO32‐ confined within interlayer was in‐situ converted when integrated with glycerol oxidation under irradiation. The optimal nanocatalyst exhibited a decent conversion efficiency of CO32‐‐CO‐CH4 and near 100% selectivity of secondary hydroxy group in glycerol. DFT calculation, isotope‐labeled experiments and in‐situ spectrograph characterization revealed possible coupling reaction mechanism. More importantly, the nanocatalyst exhibited impressive reusability for at least six 6 runs. The developed multiple coupling process will be an alternative and promising procedure for the waste and low‐valued sources synergetic utilization.

Abstract:Supercritical CO 2 , known for its non-toxic, non-flammable and abundant properties, is well-perceived as a green alternative to hazardous organic solvents. It has attracted considerable interest in food, pharmaceuticals, chromatography, and catalysis fields. When supercritical CO 2 is integrated into microfluidic systems, it offers several advantages compared to conventional macro-scale supercritical reactors. These include optical transparency, small volume, rapid reaction, and precise manipulation of fluids, making microfluidics a versatile tool for process optimization and fundamental studies of extraction and reaction kinetics in supercritical CO 2 applications. Moreover, the small length scale of microfluidics allows for the production of uniform nanoparticles with reduced particle size, beneficial for nanomaterial synthesis. In this perspective, we review microfluidic investigations involving supercritical CO 2 , with a particular focus on three primary applications, namely, solvent extraction, nanoparticle synthesis, and chemical reactions. We provide a summary of the experimental innovations, key mechanisms, and principle findings from these microfluidic studies, aiming to spark further interest. Finally, we conclude this review with some discussion on the future perspectives in this field.
