Abstract:We have demonstrated that the rod segments with lateral dendritic chains self-assemble into unique stepped strips in which the rods are aligned parallel to the strip long axis. This unique organization of the rod segments arises from a balance between the energetic gain of a parallel arrangement of the rods and the resulting entropic penalty associated with stretching of the lateral flexible chains.
Self-assembly of Cyclic Rod-Coil Diblock Copolymers

Abstract:The phase behavior of cyclic rod-coil diblock copolymer melts is investigated by the dissipative particle dynamics simulation. In order to understand the effect of chain topological architecture better, we also study the linear rod-coil system. The comparison of the calculated phase diagrams between the two rod-coil copolymers reveals that the order-disorder transition point (χN)ODT for cyclic rod-coil diblock copolymers is always higher than that of equivalent linear rod-coil diblocks. In addition, the phase diagram for cyclic system is more “symmetrical,” due to the topological constraint. Moreover, there are significant differences in the self-assembled overall morphologies and the local molecular arrangements. For example, frod = 0.5, both lamellar structures are formed while rod packing is different greatly in cyclic and linear cases. The lamellae with rods arranged coplanarly into bilayers occurs in cyclic rod-coil diblocks, while the lamellar structure with rods arranged end by end into interdigitated bilayers appears in linear counterpart. In both the lamellar phases, the domain size ratio of cyclic to linear diblocks is ranged from 0.63 to 0.70. This is attributed to that the cyclic architecture with the additional junction increases the contacts between incompatible blocks and prevents the coil chains from expanding as much as the linear cases. As frod = 0.7, the hexagonally packed cylinder is observed for cyclic rod-coil diblocks, while liquid-crystalline smectic A lamellar phase is formed in linear system. As a result, the cyclization of a linear rod-coil block copolymer can induce remarkable differences in the self-assembly behavior and also diversify its physical properties and applications greatly.

Abstract:Solid scrolls are reversibly formed by self-assembly of rod-shaped molecules with laterally attached coil units, in contrast to the layered structures formed from self-assembly of planar molecules. As described by M. Lee and co-workers in their Communication on page 1664 ff., the core structure of the scrolls, which are either filled cylinders or hollow tubes, can be controlled by variation of the length of the coil unit. The cover picture shows aligned tubular scrolls displaying well-defined in-plane ordering of the rod segments.

Abstract:Bent-shaped rigid-core molecules with flexible chiral dendrons grafted to the outer side of the bend were synthesized and characterized by circular dichroism, differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray scatterings, and transmission electron microscopy in solution and the solid state. The bent aromatic rods based on hepta- and nonaphenylene with nitrile groups at both ends self assemble into well ordered hollow tubular structures in aqueous solution, while the bent rod based on heptaphenylene Without nitrile groups showed no apparent. aggregations in aqueous solution. In the solid state, the rigid-flexible molecules based on heptaphenylene rod without the nitrile group self-assemble into a 2D oblique columnar structure with the columnar cross-section containing two interlocked molecules.. Remarkably, the rigid flexible molecules based on hepta-, nona-, and undecaphenylene with nitrile groups elf-assemble: into a-hexagonal columnar structure With weak 3D order. A model of vesicular channel structure is proposed based on small- and wide- angle X-ray diffraction on oriented fibers, density measurement, reconstruction and simulation of electron density maps, and molecular dynamics simulation. In contrast to the hollow tubular structure found in solution, in the solid both the outside and the interior of the columns are filled by the pendant aliphatic coils. Filling of the interior of these vesicular channels is Made. possible by some bent rod molecules turning their obtuse apex inward. One in 7, 2 in 8, and 4 in 10 molecules are thus inverted in a column slice in compounds with hepta-, nona-, and undecaphenylene cores, respectively. These are new examples of vesicular double-segregated columnar structures recently discovered in some dendrons.
Three-Dimensional Supramolecular Organization of Molecular Rods Depending on Coil Cross Section in Rod−Coil Molecules

Abstract:Coil−rod−coil molecules were prepared to have identical coil volume fraction (f = 0.78) relative to mesogenic rod segment, but different coil segments, i.e., poly(propylene oxide) with DP = 13 and poly(ethylene oxide) with DP = 18. Their self-assembly behavior in the solid and liquid crystalline phases was investigated using optical polarized microscopy and small-angle X-ray scattering techniques. The coil−rod−coil molecule with the poly(propylene oxide) coils shows a 3-D body-centered tetragonal micellar structure in both solid and liquid crystalline phases. In contrast, the coil−rod−coil molecule with the poly(ethylene oxide) coils exhibits a 3-D honeycomb-like lamellar structure in both solid and liquid crystalline phases. These results demonstrate that the cross-sectional area of coil significantly influences the self-assembly behavior of rod segments even at constant coil volume fraction relative to rod segment and provides the way to fine-tune 3-D supramolecular structures in the rod−coil system.

Abstract:A series of rod-coil molecules (n-x, where n represents the number of repeating units in a PPO coil and x the number of phenyl groups in a rod segment) with variation in the molecular length, but an identical rod to coil volume ratio was synthesized, and their self-assembling behavior was investigated by using DSC and X-ray scatterings. The molecule with a short rod-coil molecule (16-4) shows a 3-D tetragonal structure based on a body-centered symmetry of the discrete bundles in addition to a lamellar structure. This 3-D lattice, on heating, collapses to generate a disordered micellar structure. Remarkably, the molecules based on longer molecular length (21 -5 and 24-6) were observed to self-organize into, on heating, lamellar, tetagonally perforated lamellar, 2-D hexagonal columnar and finally disordered micellar structures. Further increase in the molecular length as in the case of 29-7 and 32-8 induces a 3-D hexagonally perforated lamellar structure as an intermediate structure between the lamellar and tetragonally perforated lamellar structures. Consequently, these systems demonstrate the ability to regulate the domain nanostructure, from 2-dimensionally continuous layers, long strips to discrete bundles via periodic perforated layers by small changes in the molecular length, at an identical rod-to-coil volume fraction.
Tunable Columnar Organization by Twisted Stacking of End-Capped Aromatic Rods

Abstract:The dumbbell-shaped aromatic amphiphilic molecules consisting of hexa-p-phenylene-conjugated carbazole moieties on both ends as a rigid rod segment and oligoether chains with different cross-sections (i.e., linear branch (1), dibranch (2), and tetrabranch (3)) attached to a carbazole as flexible chains were synthesized and their self-assembling behavior investigated using DSC, X-ray scatterings, and TEM. These dumbbell-shaped molecules based on an end-capped rod segment self-assemble into a tunable 21) supramolecular structure depending on cross-sectional area of the flexible dendritic chain. With increasing cross-sectional area of the flexible chains, the 21) structure changes from rectangular to oblique columnar structures with a successive increase in the lattice constant a relative to b. This structural change is also accompanied by increasing temperature as in the case of 2 and 3. The molecular rearrangements at the phase transitions were proposed to undergo a scissoring motion of the two adjacent rods along the column axis. Considering that all other self-assembling systems based on rigid rod segments have a strong tendency to be aligned parallel to each other, the remarkable feature of the end-capped rod segment investigated in this study is the ability to control 2D supramolecular structure through a unique scissoring motion between the two adjacent stacked rods.
Supramolecular Helical Columns from the Self-Assembly of Chiral Rods

Abstract:Chiral-bridged rod molecules (CBRs) that consisted of bis(penta-p-phenylene) conjugated to an opened or closed chiral bridging group as a rigid segment and oligoether dendrons as flexible segments were synthesized and characterized. In the bulk state, both molecules self-assemble into a hexagonal columnar structure, as confirmed by X-ray scatterings and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observations. Interestingly, these structures display opposite Cotton effects in the chromophore of the aromatic unit in spite of the same chirality (R,R) of the chiral bridging groups. The molecules were observed to self-assemble into cylindrical micellar aggregates in aqueous solution, as confirmed by light scattering and TEM investigations, and exhibit intense signals in the circular dichroism (CD) spectra, which are indicative of one-handed helical conformations. The CD spectra of each molecule showed opposite signals to each other, which were similar to those in the bulk. Notably, when the opened CBR was added to a solution of closed CBRs up to a certain concentration, the CD signal of the closed CBR was amplified. This implies that both molecules co-assemble into a one-handed helical structure because the opened chiral bridge is conformationally flexible, which is inverted to co-assemble with the closed CBR. These results demonstrate that small structural modifications of the chiral moiety can transfer the chiral information to a supramolecular assembly in the opposite way.
Spontaneous Organization of Supramolecular Rod-Bundles into a Body-Centered Tetragonal Assembly in Coil−Rod−Coil Molecules

Abstract:The synthesis and characterization of coil-rod-coil molecules of 4,4'-bis[4-methyloxypoly(propyleneoxy)propyloxy-4'-biphenyloxymethyl]biphenyl with a poly(propylene oxide) coil of 3 (7), 6 (8), 9 (9), 13 (10), 17 (11), and 22 (12) propylene oxide units are described. These molecules self-assemble into ordered structures that differ significantly on variation of the length of poly(propylene oxide) coil. Coil-rod-coil molecule 7 self-organizes into lamellar crystalline and bicontinuous cubic liquid crystalline assemblies, while 8 shows a hexagonal columnar liquid crystalline assembly. Remarkably, increasing the length of coil induces discrete supramolecular aggregates that self-assemble into a birefringent 3-D superlattice. The molecules 9 and 10 assemble into discrete supramolecular aggregates that spontaneously organize into a novel 3-D tetragonal lattice with a body-centered symmetry in the crystalline and melt states. Further increasing the length of coil as in the case of 11 and 12 induces only a body-centered tetragonal crystalline phase, while the liquid crystalline phase in these molecules is suppressed. X-ray diffraction experiments and density measurements showed that the aggregation of these molecules into a discrete supramolecular structure gives rise to aromatic rod bundles with hockey puck-like cylindrical shape encapsulated by phase-separated coil segments which results in the formation of oblate aggregates. This nonspherical oblate shape is believed to be responsible for the formation of a body-centered tetragonal phase. These results demonstrate that supramolecular structures, from 1-D lamellar to 3-D tetragonal superlattices, formed by the self-assembling process of molecular rods can be controlled in a systematic and predictive way by simple variation of the length of grafted coils.
Self-Assembly of Rod-Terminally Tethered Three-Armed Star-Shaped Coil Block Copolymer: Investigation of the Presence of the Branching in the Coil to the Self-Assembled Behavior

Abstract:Self-assembled behavior of rod-terminally tethered three-armed star-shaped coil block copolymer melts was studied by applying self-consistent-field lattice techniques in three-dimensional (3D) space. Similar to rod-coil diblock copolymers, five morphologies were observed, i.e., lamellar, perforated lamellar, gyroidlike, cylindrical and sphericallike structures, while the distribution of the morphologies in the phase diagram was dramatically changed with respect to that Of rod-coil diblock copolymers. The perforated lamella was replaced by the cylinder when f(rod) = 0.45, and the lamella was replaced by the perforated lamella when f(rod) = 0.5 when the arms A(1) and A(2) had an equal length and the volume fraction of A(3) arm was low enough. Simulations were also performed when the arms A(1) and A(2) had unequal lengths. These results demonstrate that simple branching in the coil induces interesting microphase transitions. Abstract:Self-assembly behavior of a mixture system containing rod-coil block copolymers and rigid homopolymers was investigated by using Brownian dynamics simulations. The morphologies of formed hierarchical self-assemblies were found to be dependent on the Lennard-Jones (LJ) interaction εRR between rod blocks, lengths of rod and coil blocks in copolymer and mixture ratio of block copolymers to homopolymers. As the εRR value decreases, the self-assembled structures of mixtures are transformed from an abacus-like structure to a helical structure, to a plain fiber and finally are broken into unimers. The order parameter of rod blocks was calculated to confirm the structure transition. Through varying the length of rod and coil blocks, the regions of thermodynamic stability of abacus, helix, plain fiber and unimers were mapped. Moreover, it was discovered that two levels of rod block ordering exist in the helices. The block copolymers are helically wrapped on the homopolymer bundles to form helical string, while the rod blocks are twistingly packed inside the string. In addition, the simulation results are in good agreement with experimental observations. The present work reveals the mechanism behind the formation of helical (experimentally super-helical) structures and may provide useful information for design and preparation of the complex structures.

Abstract:Past decades have witnessed rapidly growing interest in nanometer-sized structures, which have great potential to be used in a variety of applications, such as electronics, sensors, coatings, and biomaterials. Supramolecular chemistry in particular has been actively applied to the development of such materials. Nanostructures can readily be accessed using bottom-up supramolecular approaches as they are composed of small molecules (supramolecular building blocks) requiring fewer steps to synthesize. Among various types of supramolecular building blocks, rod–coil molecules, due to their anisotropic molecular shape, are well-suited for tailoring nanostructural properties such as size and shape. This Feature Article highlights the self-assembly of rod–coil molecules in aqueous solution and introduces an emerging approach to the application of rod–coil nanostructures in biomaterials applications.

Abstract:Self-assembled nanostructures of rod-like molecules are commonly limited to nematic or layered smectic structures dominated by the parallel arrangement of the rod-like components. Distinct self-assembly behavior of four categories of dendritic rods constructed by placing a tri(hydroxy) group at the apex of dendritic oligo-fluorenes is observed. Designed hydrogen bonding and dendritic architecture break the parallel arrangement of the rods, resulting in molecules with specific (fan-like or cone-like) shapes. While the fan-shaped molecules tend to form hexagonal packing cylindrical phases, the cone-shaped molecules could form spherical motifs to pack into various ordered structures, including the Frank-Kasper A15 phase and dodecagonal quasicrystal. This study provides a model system to engineer diverse supramolecular structures by rod-like molecules and sheds new light into the mechanisms of the formation of unconventional spherical packing structures in soft matter.
Archimedean Spirals with Controllable Chirality: Disk Substrate-Mediated Solution Assembly of Rod-Coil Block Copolymers

Abstract:Spirals are common in nature; however, they are rarely observed in polymer self-assembly systems, and the formation mechanism is not well understood. Herein, we report the formation of two-dimensional (2D) spiral patterns via microdisk substrate-mediated solution self-assembly of polypeptide-based rod-coil block copolymers. The spiral pattern consists of multiple strands assembled from the block copolymers, and two central points are observed. The spirals fit well with the Archimedean spiral model, and their chirality is dependent on the chirality of the polypeptide blocks. As revealed by a combination of experiments and theoretical simulations, these spirals are induced by an interplay of the parallel ordering tendency of the strands and circular confinement of the microdisks. This work presents the first example regarding substrate-mediated self-assembly of block copolymers into spirals. The gained information could not only enhance our understanding of natural spirals but also assist in both the controllable preparations and applications of spiral nanostructures.

Abstract:AbstractFeste Rollen bilden sich reversibel durch Selbstorganisation stabförmiger Moleküle, an die seitlich knäuelförmige Einheiten angebracht sind, im Unterschied zu Schichtstrukturen, die durch Selbstorganisation planarer Moleküle entstehen. Wie M. Lee et al. in der Zuschrift auf S. 1692 ff. schildern, lässt sich die Kernstruktur der Rollen, die entweder gefüllten Zylindern oder hohlen Röhren entsprechen, durch Variation der Länge der Knäuel‐Einheit steuern. Channel Structures from Self-Assembled Hexameric Macrocycles in Laterally Grafted Bent Rod Molecules

Abstract:Internally grafted bent rod molecules consisting of a bent-shaped nona-p-phenylene and different lengths of oligoether chains at the bay position were synthesized and characterized. All of the bent-shaped molecules showed ordered bulk-state structures as characterized by differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray scatterings, and transmission electron microscopy. The bent rod based on a short oligo(propylene oxide) chain self-assembles into a 2-D channel-like columnar structure, whereas the molecules with an intermediate length of flexible chains self-assemble into discrete channels that self-organize into honeycomb layers. A further increase in the length of the flexible chain induces a layered structure. In contrast to the bent-shaped molecules based on a linear chain, the molecules based on a branched chain self-assemble into an inverted 2-D columnar structure with an aromatic core surrounded by branched chains. We proposed the model of the channel structure on the basis of experimental data obtained from X-ray results and density measurements. Within the channels, six bent rods self-assemble into hexameric macrocycles that stack on one another to form channel-like columns where the interiors are filled by the flexible oligoether chains. Remarkably, the elongated channels break up into discrete channels of a well-defined length with increasing length of the oligoether chain. The resulting discrete channels self-organize into a hexagonally ordered honeycomb layer. The defined length of a channel is believed to be responsible for the formation of unique honeycomb layers.

Abstract:Liquid-crystalline behaviour of rod-coil molecules is normally associated with the formation of calamitic mesophases; by increasing the volume fraction of coil segments via substitution of poly(propylene oxide) with degree of polymerization of 12 to an elongated rod, the rod-like mesogen can be assembled into cylindrical micelles, showing a hexagonal columnar mesophase.
