Abstract:There are an increasing number of researchers realizing the vital importance of entrepreneurial failure's influence on subsequent entrepreneurial intention. Failure provides entrepreneurs a chance to learn and enhance relevant capacities. Through reviewing researchers regarding to failure and intention, this article suggests to expand and deepen the theory of entrepreneurial failure and subsequent intention via viewing failure as a short stage in ongoing entrepreneurial process, which provides researchers a new perspective for future direction.

Abstract:Entrepreneurial failure is an important learning scenario,even more important than the value of information to business success.The perspective of entrepreneurship research often ignore the failure,separates the relationship between failure and success.To better understand the core issue whether the experience of entrepreneurial failure would contribute to future business success or not,a theoretical model was constructed,about the relationship among entrepreneurial failure (EF),learning from the failure (LF) and new venture performance (NVP).And through an empirical research on 147 valid samples,the following conclusions have been found that the relationship among EF,LF and NVP showed a non-linear and inverted U-shape feature.Numbers and extent of entrepreneurs' previous failure(s) will be positively associated with the level of learning and the growth of their subsequent ventures,until up to a threshold point where it will be negatively associated with both of them.LF has a significantly positive impact on NVP,and plays the role of mediating effect between EF and NVP.The findings revealed that not all failures can be equivalently promote LF.Moderate failure is the best learning situation,and has the most learning value.Being good at learning from failure is the key to business success.

Abstract:Since 1990's,significant and rapid development can be seen in the field of theory of the firm(TF).Based on relative literatures in the latest 5 years,the author introduces the main works on entrepreneurial theory of the firm(ETF).Then,the author proposes that the breakthrough of those theories can be classified into two aspects:(1) The process of value-creating,rather than the deployment of resource,has become the central issue of ETF.ETF gives a better interpretation of the phenomena of firm that is obviously an open system.Moreover,ETF is a dynamic theory and apply itself to explain the law of evolutionary path of firm.(2) ETF emphasizes the role of decision-maker,and this promote it converge with decision-making science and organizational learning field.All in all,ETF assimilates traditional TF,and transcends the later as well.

Abstract:Spinning off is a very important activity,which can greatly accelerate companies’ growth and economic development.There are many great conclusions about spin-off entrepreneurship all over the world.But that is not enough and we should do much more.The establishment of a new venture based on spin-offs is increasing in China,while relevant research is inadequate.The rapid growth of spin-offs gives us a good chance to study them.Grounded Theory is a very scientifi c and useful method for concluding theories from phenomena.A case study of enterprise spin-offs based on Grounded Theory is conducted,and a series of conclusions are fi nally reached concerning the research frame,characteristics and successful factors.

Abstract:Purpose - A lot of researches suggest that work experience plays an important role in the process of venture gestation. However, previous studies cannot explain "why there is a huge difference in the entrepreneurial success rate of those persons who have work experience". Drawing insights from the model of "job embeddedness" in human resources management research field, the purpose of this paper is to examine the impact of on-the-job embeddedness on the centrality of entrepreneurial activities and the duration of venture creation activities.Design/methodology/approach - Multiple regression is applied to test the hypotheses, using the dataset from the American "Panel Study of Entrepreneurial Dynamics" (PSED I).Findings - The results suggest entrepreneur's previous work experience may result in scattered venture creation activities and the duration of entrepreneurial activity extended. It means the higher degree of on-the-job embedded the founder has, he or she feels more compatible with current job and more comfortable in the current work environment.Practical implications - Individuals who leave current jobs and start their own business are likely to promise personal losses (e.g. giving up colleagues, interesting projects or pleasant perks). So they consistently face an inordinate amount of risk and the entrepreneurial activities and longer term of venture gestation. If individual wants to start new firms quickly and efficiently, he should not only focus on the skills needed to perform his current job, but also should train his comprehensive management skills, even entrepreneurial ability by any possible ways during the work history of being an employee.Originality/value - The paper enhances our understanding of the influence of employee's work history on the new venture creation by applying job embeddedness theory. It enlightens individuals who plan to create their own ventures to apply their on-the-job embeddedness to improve the success rate of entrepreneurial activities.
Effectuation and Causation in New Internet Venture Growth

Abstract:Purpose – Research on new internet venture growth is lacking. The purpose of this paper is to address the gap by developing and testing a theoretical model that links venturing principles (effectuation or causation) to new internet venture growth through resource bundling (pioneering or stabilizing). Design/methodology/approach – The proposed theoretical model is developed upon the entrepreneurship literature and resource-based view. Empirical data are collected from entrepreneurs and top executives in China via a survey. The Baron and Kenny (1986) mediation model assessment procedure is used to analyze the data. Findings – Both effectuation and causation are positively associated with new internet venture growth. Effectuation leads to pioneering resource bundling, which in turn contributes to new internet venture growth. Causation also contributes to new internet venture growth, but through stabilizing resource bundling. Research limitations/implications – This research helps link the theory of effectuation to resource-based theory by revealing resource bundling as the mediator between effectuation, causation, and new venture growth. Moreover, the authors provide empirical evidence of the importance of resource bundling with entrepreneurial strategic decision logics to the growth of new internet ventures in transitional economies. Practical implications – Entrepreneurs and managers of new internet ventures should leverage both venturing principles to support growth. Internet ventures generally are creative and innovative in nature, hence favor effectuation. But it will be unwise to ignore causation, which also leads to growth. Originality/value – This is an original empirical research guided by theories. It is a novel insight to identify the mediating effect of resource bundling. This study likely will inspire more scholarly research on the subject. It also lays a solid foundation for further inquiry such as complementarities between effectuation and causation.

Abstract:Opportunity is central in entrepreneurship research. However, research has developed several approaches to explain entrepreneurial phenomena based on mutually exclusive ontological assumptions about entrepreneurial opportunities. Reconciling this tension, we develop a process view of opportunity actualization to examine how a firm proactively discovers and creates opportunities to enable rapid entrepreneurial growth. We draw on an inductive case study of an Internet-based technology entrepreneurial firm which rapidly grew by successively seizing opportunities in two different product markets. Our proposed theory emphasizes that entrepreneurship is a cyclical transformation process of multi-form opportunity. During this process, entrepreneurs with resourcefulness proactively transform discovered-form opportunities from a deeper unobservable level to a less conspicuous level, whereby external opportunities are internalized as tangible resources for growth. We contribute to the concepts in opportunity discovery, creation, and actualization approaches. Our most fundamental insight extends the resources-based firm growth theory: opportunity actualization has value in envisioning the business and exchanging resources for growth. We also identify momentum-driven entrepreneurial growth as an objective condition-centric process.

Abstract:Intergenerational succession is a principal cause of the high failure rate among first- and second-generation family businesses. The purpose of this paper is to contribute to the understanding of the complexity and dynamics of the succession process by examining the role of guanxi. This paper uses an exploratory case study of six Chinese family firms. The results of this research indicate that (1) the succession process of entrepreneurs’ guanxi networks can be divided into four representative phases, namely, preheating, triggering, readjusting, and reconstructing; and (2) each phase requires performing some characteristic tasks. Such tasks include the cross-generational teaching and learning of guanxi philosophy, the deconstruction of the profile of guanxi networks, the introduction of the next generation to existing guanxi parties, the cross-generational role readjustment in guanxi building and management, the renewal of guanxi parties, and the rebuilding of guanxi net structures. The results of this study also provide an extended theoretical model that helps to explain the relationship between the intergenerational transfer of entrepreneurs’ guanxi networks and the transfer of leadership.

Abstract:Focusing the new business venturing decision making process of corporate entrepreneurship,the comparative cases study attempts to reveal the fact that the law of decision making,especially concerning the decision phenomenon and feature by the entrepreneur.According to the verbal retrospection and semi-structure interview approach,13 entrepreneurs were interviewed,then 4 of them(2 successes and 2 failures) were selected to depict in details.The conclusions indicats:①The entrepreneurial alertness,prior knowledge and innovative cognitive styles are the key elements to impact opportunity recognition.②Successful decision making relies on the recognition of opportunity feasibility and profitability.The transformational style is the more favorable mode for the entrepreneurial decision-making.③Successful decision making depends on the ego-internalized and insightful business prediction.Once the opportunity is identified,the entrepreneurs would have their plan implemented immediately excluding any external disturbance.

Abstract:More and more researchers are focusing on the study of INVs,which is an emerging field of intersection of international business and entrepreneurship. But research on factors leading to the formation of INVs is limited to firms from developed countries. This paper conducted an exploratory,multiple-case study of INVs in Zhejiang,China. We find that motivators in the literature cannot be applied to our cases for variation in environment and industry type. We think the major drivers to the formation of INVs are the needs of survival,former experiences and local networks of entrepreneurs,degree of internationalization of the industry,and domestic market and policy.

Abstract:In the increasingly complex and variable environment ,entrepreneurial activity has be‐come a common business phenomenon and brought hot discussion in the academic circles .The ad‐vantages of virtualized operation have been acknowledged by business circles and academic circles , and have led many enterprises to success .Therefore ,such questions are obliged to be answered as w hy an entrepreneur adopts the virtualized operation model to begin the business ,w hat factors and motives can be used to explain this operation model ,and w hat the decision‐making process is like .This paper uses the classical grounded theory to research into three typical corporations , based on which it puts forward the concept of “virtualized entrepreneurship”.It draws the con‐clusion that the internal motives include entrepreneurs’ motivation ,limited resources and ability at the initial stage ,traditional business model’s inability to rapidly respond to market demand , and sharp brand consciousness of entrepreneurs .It is also found that virtualized entrepreneurship is connected with external environment which may be supportive or oppressive ,the key factors in the decision‐making of virtualized entrepreneurship including the aspirations for and ability of the virtualized entrepreneurship ,and support from the external industrial environment .Based on those studies , this paper constructs the general decision‐making model of virtualized entrepre‐neurship ,which integrally describes the internal and external motives ,influencing factors and their interactions ,laying the theoretical foundation to further research .

Abstract:Purpose - Guided by the proposed opportunity and resource integrative entrepreneurial growth model, the purpose of this paper is to explore how different opportunity type firms grow integrally and what the laws for different opportunity integration growth modes are.Design/methodology/approach - A multiple case study on six firms in information and communication technologies industry in China is conducted.Findings - Three types of entrepreneurial opportunities exist. These are identification type opportunity, discovery type opportunity, and creation type opportunity. Entrepreneurship among the three types of entrepreneurial opportunities operates under different laws. For each type of entrepreneurial opportunity, firms need to balance the two growth modes, namely, the opportunity identification and assessment/resource allocation mode and the opportunity utilization and resource identification/acquisition mode, in order to achieve a leveraging effect.Research limitations/implications - Vertical comparison is missing.Practical implications - Firms need to balance the two growth modes, namely, opportunity identification and assessment and resource allocation mode and opportunity utilization and resource identification and acquisition mode, to achieve leverage effect.Originality/value - This paper integrates system theory with entrepreneurship research and proposes the opportunity and resource integrative entrepreneurial growth model. This model is helpful, both in aiding firms to follow the laws for entrepreneurial opportunities and to identify entrepreneurial opportunities. The business model plays a vital role in entrepreneurship. Firms taking advantage of the Internet of Things are more likely to gain a competitive advantage and to achieve success in their entrepreneurial activities.

Abstract:Based on literatures concerning organizational learning,social capital,and corporate entrepreneur- ship both home and abroad,this study summarized six most representative models embodying their recursive relationships and empirically investigated these relationships through a large sample of 676 Chinese new ven- tures in Jiangsu and Guangdong Provinces.The results suggest that organizational learning,social capital,and corporate entrepreneurship support each other;however,such supporting relationships differ according to dif- ferent development stages of new ventures.Specifically,for new ventures in the early stage,relationships con- cerning incremental CE,strong ties,and exploitation were emphasized;for new ventures in the middle stage, new relationships concerning weak ties,exploration,and radical CE came into effect and previous ones still had influences;and for new ventures in the late stage,all kinds of supporting relationships concerning organi- zational learning,social capital,and corporate entrepreneurship are becoming obvious and getting into bal- ances.

Abstract:According to the time dimensions,entrepreneurship can be divided into first-venture and second-venture.Due to the differences in initial environment,resources and capacities,varied business venture activities have exhibited many differences in risk taking,realized outcome and venture growth.Through analysis of the process of Haiwei's three business ventures,it finds out that the first-venture and second-venture are subject to different key factors and the differences also exist in functional mechanism.First-venture are more influenced by personal factors of entrepreneur while second-venture are more influenced by groups and organizational factors.
