Abstract:Our Town was created by Thornton Wilder, one of the most celebrated American playwrights,in the 1930s.This paper begins with an analysis of what bogs dramatic allegory in the modern age,and looks into those challenges that confront Wilder and his solutions.Although this play has always been considered as a paragon of "epic theatre," Wilder is different from Brecht and the ancient traditions of theatre in that Wilder is more inclined to subtly evoke among the audience an alienated interpretation of our everydayness. To make modern allegorical drama still watchable and endurable,Wilder not only needs avant-garde dramaturgy, but has to use melodrama and pathetic fallacy reflexively,so as to realize a dialogic stance against modern drama.
