Abstract:Based on the concept of classical phase, we formulate a new explanation for the quantum phase from the quantum mechanical point of view. The quantum phase is the canonically conjugate variable of an angular momentum operator, which corresponds to the angular position φ in an actual physical space with a classical reference frame, but it takes a complex exponential form e iφ≡cosφ+i sinφ in the abstract Hilbert space of a quantum reference frame. This formulation is simply the famous Euler formula in a complex number field. In particular, when φ = π/2, the correlative quantum phase is a unitary pure imaginary number e iπ/2≡cos(π/2)+i sin(π/2) ≡ i. By using a photon state-vector function that is the general solution of photon Schrödinger equation and can completely describe a photon’s behavior, we discuss the relationship between the angular momentum of a photon and the phase of the photon; we also analyze the intrinsic relationship between the macroscopic light wave phase and the microscopic photon phase.

Abstract:We report recent progress on the phase space formulation of quantum mechanics with coordinate-momentum variables, focusing more on new theory of (weighted) constraint coordinate-momentum phase space for discrete-variable quantum systems. This leads to a general coordinate-momentum phase space formulation of composite quantum systems, where conventional representations on infinite phase space are employed for continuous variables. It is convenient to utilize (weighted) constraint coordinate-momentum phase space for representing the quantum state and describing nonclassical features. Various numerical tests demonstrate that new trajectory-based quantum dynamics approaches derived from the (weighted) constraint phase space representation are useful and practical for describing dynamical processes of composite quantum systems in gas phase as well as in condensed phase.

Analysis Of Geometric Phase Effects In The Quantum-Classical Liouville Formalism

Abstract:We analyze two approaches to the quantum-classical Liouville (QCL) formalism that differ in the order of two operations: Wigner transformation and projection onto adiabatic electronic states. The analysis is carried out on a two-dimensional linear vibronic model where geometric phase (GP) effects arising from a conical intersection profoundly affect nuclear dynamics. We find that the Wigner-then-Adiabatic (WA) QCL approach captures GP effects, whereas the Adiabatic-then-Wigner (AW) QCL approach does not. Moreover, the Wigner transform in AW-QCL leads to an ill-defined Fourier transform of double-valued functions. The double-valued character of these functions stems from the nontrivial GP of adiabatic electronic states in the presence of a conical intersection. In contrast, WA-QCL avoids this issue by starting with the Wigner transform of single-valued quantities of the full problem. As a consequence, GP effects in WA-QCL can be associated with a dynamical term in the corresponding equation of motion. Since the WA-QCL approach uses solely the adiabatic potentials and non-adiabatic derivative couplings as an input, our results indicate that WA-QCL can capture GP effects in two-state crossing problems using first-principles electronic structure calculations without prior diabatization or introduction of explicit phase factors. The energy level structure of the modified Schrodinger equation can be consistent with Lamb shift

Abstract:In the literature of calculating atomic and molecular structures, most Schrodinger equations are described by Coulomb potential. However, there are also a few literatures that discuss some magnetic correction methods, such as Pauli and Shortley's early work. But in fact, the calculation accuracy of these Schrodinger equations is not consistent with Lamb shift. Therefore, in the traditional ab initio calculation of quantum mechanics, it is common and necessary to use Dirac theory or quantum electrodynamics (QED) to correct the energy level of Schrodinger equation. However, the calculation of Feynman diagram is a daunting problem, including the application of self-consistent field in relativity and density functional theory. So recently, we have noticed the simplicity of the modified Newtonian mechanics, and we think that quantum mechanics will have similar properties. Here, we state this and improve the correction function in our previous action potential. In addition, through the demonstration of hydrogen-like and helium-like systems here, it can be proved that this conclusion is a potential application, that is, the energy level structure of our modified Schrodinger equation is consistent with Lamb shift.

Abstract:The quantum phase transition in an atom-molecule conversion system with atomic transition between two hyperfine states is studied. In the mean-field approximation, we give the phase diagram in which the phase boundary only depends on the atomic transition strength and the atom-molecule energy detuning, but not on the atomic interactions. Such a phase boundary is further confirmed by calculating the fidelity of the ground state and the energy gap between the first excited state and the ground state. As a comparison to the mean-field results, we also study the quantum phase transition with the full quantum method where the phase boundary depends on the particle number. Analysing the finite-size scaling behaviours of the energy gap, the fidelity susceptibility and the first-order derivative of entanglement entropy with respect to the atomic transition strength, we obtain their critical exponents by numerical calculation and show that in the thermodynamic limit, one can obtain the same phase boundary as in the mean-field approximation. Our results show a new way to manipulate the quantum phase transition by regulating the atomic transition strength with the intensity of the laser.

Abstract:Nonadiabatic dynamical processes are one of the most important quantum mechanical phenomena in chemical, materials, biological, and environmental molecular systems, where the coupling between different electronic states is either inherent in the molecular structure or induced by the (intense) external field. The curse of dimensionality indicates the intractable exponential scaling of calculation effort with system size and restricts the implementation of numerically exact approaches for realistic large systems. The phase space formulation of quantum mechanics offers an important theoretical framework for constructing practical approximate trajectory-based methods for quantum dynamics. This Account reviews our recent progress in phase space mapping theory: a unified framework for constructing the mapping Hamiltonian on phase space for coupled F-state systems where the renowned Meyer-Miller Hamiltonian model is a special case, a general phase space formulation of quantum mechanics for nonadiabatic systems where the electronic degrees of freedom are mapped onto constraint space and the nuclear degrees of freedom are mapped onto infinite space, and an isomorphism between the mapping phase space approach for nonadiabatic systems and that for nonequilibrium electron transport processes.

Abstract:The Laplace transform is a valuable tool in physics, particularly in solving differential equations with initial or boundary conditions. A 2014 study by Tsaur and Wang (2014 \emph{Eur.~J.~Phys.} \textbf{35} 015006) introduced a Laplace-transform-based method to solve the stationary Schrödinger equation for various potentials. However, their approach contains critical methodological flaws: the authors disregard essential boundary conditions and apply the residue theorem incorrectly in the inverse transformation process. These errors ultimately cancel out, leading to correct results despite a flawed derivation. In this paper, we revisit the use of the Laplace transform for the one-dimensional Schrödinger equation, clarifying correct practices in handling boundary conditions and singularities. This analysis offers a sound and consistent framework for the application of Laplace transforms in stationary quantum mechanics, underscoring their educational utility in quantum mechanics coursework.

New Results by Low Momentum Approximation from Relativistic Quantum Mechanics Equations and Suggestion of Experiments

Abstract:A fundamental belief is that the formulism of relativistic quantum mechanics equations (RQMEs) should remain in low momentum motion. However, it is found that some formulas from RQMEs were lost in Schrodinger equation. For example, a free relativistic particle has positive and negative energy branches. The former includes positive kinetic energy (PKE) and the latter negative kinetic energy (NKE). The latter should be treated on an equal footing as the former. Nevertheless, from Schrodinger equation, a free particle can have only PKE. Starting from RQMEs and taking low momentum approximation, we derive NKE Schrodinger equation which is for the cases that free particles have NKE. Thus negative energy branch of RQMEs can be retained in low momentum motion. We point out a fact that whether Schrodinger equation is applicable in a region where a particle's energy E is less than potential V, E V, has never been quantitatively verified. In such a region NKE Schrodinger equation should be employed. With the help of NKE Schrodinger equation, the lost formulas are recovered. The so-called difficulty of negative probability of Klein-Gordon equation for free particles is solved. A PKE (NKE) particle can have stationary motion only when it is subject to an attractive (repulsive) potential, which is determined by Virial theorem. Two NKE electrons in a potential can constitute a stable system, a new kind of possible mechanism for electron paring. The whole discussion stems from RQMEs with no any new postulation. Experiments are suggested, which may confirm that there are indeed NKE electrons.
Classical and semi-classical limits in phase space

Abstract:A semiclassical approximation is derived by using a family of wavepackets to map arbitrary wavefunctions into phase space. If the Hamiltonian can be approximated as linear over each individual wavepacket, as often done when presenting Ehrenfest's theorem, the resulting approximation is a linear first-order partial differential equation on phase space, which will be referred to as the Schrödinger-Ehrenfest or SE equation. This advectively transports wavefunctions along classical trajectories, so that as a trajectory is followed in time the amplitude remains constant while the phase changes by the action divided by $\hbar$. The wavefunction's squared-magnitude is a plausible phase space density and obeys Liouville's equation for the classical time evolution. This is a derivation of the Koopman-von~Neumann (KvN) formulation of classical mechanics, which previously was postulated but not derived. With the time-independent SE equation, continuity of the wavefunction requires the change of phase around any closed path in the torus covered by a classical trajectory to be an integer multiple of $2\pi$, giving a standing wave picture of old quantum mechanics. While this applies to any system, for separable systems it gives Bohr-Sommerfeld quantization.

Abstract:Up to now, Schrödinger equation, Klein-Gordon equation (KGE) and Dirac equation are believed the fundamental equations of quantum mechanics. Schrödinger equation has a defect that there is no NKE solutions. Dirac equation has positive kinetic energy (PKE) and negative kinetic energy (NKE) branches. Both branches should have low momentum, or nonrelativistic, approximations: one is Schrödinger equation and the other is NKE Schrödinger equation. KGE has two problems: it is an equation of second time derivative, and calculated density is not definitely positive. To overcome the problems, it should be revised as PKE and NKE decoupled KGEs. The fundamental equations of quantum mechanics after the modification have at least two merits. They are of unitary in that everyone contains the first time derivative and are symmetric with respect to PKE and NKE. This reflects the symmetry of the PKE and NKE matters, as well as matter and dark matter, of our universe. The problems of one-dimensional step potentials are resolved by means of the modified fundamental equations for a nonrelativistic particle.

Abstract:Taking into account the importance of the unified theory of quantum mechanics and gravity, and the existence of a minimal length of the order of the Planck scale, we consider a modified Schrödinger equation resulting from a generalized uncertainty principle, which finds applications from the realm of quantum information to large-scale physics, with a quantum mechanically corrected gravitational interaction proposed very recently. As the resulting equation cannot be solved by common exact approaches, we propose a Bethe ansatz approach, which will be applied and whose results we will discuss, commenting on the analogy of the present study with some other interesting physical problems.

Abstract:It is well known that the problem of divergence in the physical interpretation of quantum mechanics originating from the uncertainty principle has not yet been resolved. Attempting to clear the constraints and confusion of this situation for the further development of quantum technology, this article traces the original derivation and the physical meaning of the Heisenberg uncertainty principle, analyzes the Einstein photon-box thought-experiment, and studies the limits of the relationships under different action scenarios. By analyzing the statistical distribution of quantum mechanical quantities, the result of the destruction of the non-statistical interpretation uncertainty relation in the electromagnetic interaction scenarios is obtained; through analyzing of the photon box thought experiment, the logical contradiction of Bohr's argument was discovered; by examining the set of interaction scenarios, a description method for determining the mechanical state of microscopic particles was put forward; according to the analysis of the hydrogen atom transition radiation process, basing on the principle of conservation of energy, the result of the lower limit of the uncertainty relation in the gravitational scene is much smaller than that in the existing electromagnetic scene is obtained, which mean the lower limit of uncertainty principle is broken. The research in this article has received an affirmative answer to Einstein's God does not play dice with the Universe. The research of this article is helpful to enhance the understanding of quantum physical phenomena in the microscopic world, and we hope it could render some theoretical support to investigating the physical basis of quantum technology.

A new development of modified quantum mechanics

Abstract:Here, we propose a new modified quantum mechanics and its new algorithms of atomic fine-structure,asymmetric variational method based on hydrogen-like atom orbit. In addition, as we all know, the ab initio calculation of atomic fine-structure is the first driving force to create relativistic quantum mechanics, so every new development of it is an interesting and important hot topic. But we will not try to prove (or refute) strictly, because there is no analytical solution to the multi-body Schrodinger equation and the magnetic potential integral of ampere force of Langevin, so we use our method to calculate the atom fine-structure of within the second period, and prove that our calculation is closer to the experimental observation value through this numerical experiment method (Our calculation accuracy is better than those of relativistic Hartree-Fock method). Therefore, our discussion is a positive exploration and conjecture.

Abstract:The conventional phase space of classical physics treats space and time differently, and this difference carries over to field theories and quantum mechanics (QM). In this paper, the phase space is enhanced through two main extensions. First, we promote the time choice of the Legendre transform to a dynamical variable. Second, we extend the Poisson brackets of matter fields to a spacetime symmetric form. The ensuing "spacetime phase space" is employed to obtain an explicitly covariant version of Hamilton equations for relativistic field theories. A canonical-like quantization of the formalism is then presented in which the fields satisfy spacetime commutation relations and the foliation is quantum. In this approach, the classical action is also promoted to an operator and retains explicit covariance through its nonseparability in the matter-foliation partition. The problem of establishing a correspondence between the new noncausal framework (where fields at different times are independent) and conventional QM is solved through a generalization of spacelike correlators to spacetime. In this generalization, the Hamiltonian is replaced by the action, and conventional particles by off-shell particles. When the foliation is quantized, the previous map is recovered by conditioning on foliation eigenstates, in analogy with the Page and Wootters mechanism. We also provide an interpretation of the correspondence in which the causal structure of a given theory emerges from the quantum correlations between the system and an environment. Abstract:Heisenberg guessed, after he established the matrix quantum mechanics, that the non-commutativity of the matrices of position and momentum implied that the position and momentum of a particle could not be precisely simultaneously determined. He consequently conjectured that time and energy should also have a similar relationship. Soon after, Robertson derived an inequality concerning the space coordinate and momentum, which was thought to be the mathematical expression of the uncertainty relation guessed by Heisenberg. Since then, people have tried various devices to prove the correctness of these two relations. However, no one conducted a careful analysis of Heisenberg's primary paper. In this work, we point out some serious problems in Heisenberg's paper and the literature talking about the uncertainty relationships: the physical concepts involved in the uncertainty relations are not clear; one physical concept had more than one explanation, i.e., switching concepts; there has never been measurement experiment to support the relations. The conclusions are that the so-called coordinate–momentum uncertainty relation has never been related to actual measurement and there does not exist a time–energy uncertainty relation.

Practical Phase-Space Electronic Hamiltonians for Ab Initio Dynamics

Abstract:Modern electronic structure theory is built around the Born-Oppenheimer approximation and the construction of an electronic Hamiltonian H_{el}(X) that depends on the nuclear position X (and not the nuclear momentum P). In this article, using the well-known theory of electron translation (Gamma') and rotational (Gamma'') factors to couple electronic transitions to nuclear motion, we construct a practical phase-space electronic Hamiltonian that depends on both nuclear position and momentum, H_{PS}(X,P). While classical Born-Oppenheimer dynamics that run along the eigensurfaces of the operator H_{el}(X) can recover many nuclear properties correctly, we present some evidence that motion along the eigensurfaces of H_{PS}(X,P) can better capture both nuclear and electronic properties (including the elusive electronic momentum studied by Nafie). Moreover, only the latter (as opposed to the former) conserves the total linear and angular momentum in general.

Abstract:The multi-stage Stern$\unicode{x2013}$Gerlach experiment conducted by Frisch and Segrè includes two cascaded quantum measurements with a nonadiabatic flipper in between. The Frisch and Segrè experiment has been modeled analytically by Majorana without the nuclear effect and subsequently revised by Rabi with the hyperfine interaction. However, the theoretical predictions do not match the experimental observation accurately. Here, we numerically solve the standard quantum mechanical model, via the von Neumann equation, including the hyperfine interaction for the time evolution of the spin. Thus far, the coefficients of determination from the standard quantum mechanical model without using free parameters are still low, indicating a mismatch between the theory and the experiment. Non-standard variants that improve the match are explored for discussion.
