Abstract:The nitrate nitrogen concentrations in the 0~10 m soil profile in three main intensive cropping systems(wheat-maize rotation system, vegetation cultivated in open fields and plastic-covered greenhouses) in the Tongzhou region of Beijing were investigated to study cropping system effect on nitrate distribution and movement.Data showed that nitrate content in open vegetable field was less than those in greenhouse condition, but nitrate content in both vegetable fields was significantly higher than in wheat-maize fields.Nitrate leaching was detected in all three cropping systems. After extended wheat-maize cultivation(>60 years),nitrates migrated to a soil depth of 630 cm,while the depth was 730 and 800 cm respectively after 5 and 13 years in open vegetable fields, and 730 and 900 cm after 5 and 18 years respectively in greenhouse. The velocity of nitrate movement into deep soil(>3 m depth) was estimated to be 6 cm·a-1 in wheat-maize field,15-26 cm·a-1 in open field and greenhouse with vegetable cultivation.Considering a groundwater level of 9-12 m in the study area, nitrate may reach groundwater after 18 years in greenhouse fields, consequently deteriorate groundwater quality.Hence,we suggest surveying nitrate distribution in vegetable cropping system in different locations and evaluating their effects on groundwater environment in Beijing region.
