Abstract:Mining subsidence is a direct source of environmental geological disaster in coal mine. In eastern China, lots of land submerged into water or became polder land, because of underground mining and its relatively flat terrain, and high groundwater table, which lead to land use condition and land scape changed extremely. A coal mine in Shandong Province was selected as a case study, according to specific geological condition, natural terrain condition, and buried depth of ground water, combing with the mining plan, an integrated approach based on subsidence prediction and GIS was proposed Mining subsidence prediction was conducted by using integral probability method for 4 mining stages, which are 2015, 2020, 2025, and 2076, respectively. Furthermore, land use evolution and its impact to human were quantitatively analyzed under GIS platform. The research indicates that: 1) farmland was decreased from 11748.70 ha to 4237.42 ha, which means only 63.93% of the pre-mining farmland disappeared; 2) Water area increased from 447.46 ha in 2009 to 9347.82 ha in 2076, most of which come from farmland and construction land; and 3) construction land decreased form 2038.44 ha to merely 1018.06, it is estimated that 73 villages were influenced, 100 thousand people may lost their home because of mining subsidence disasters. The proposed method could reflect land use evolution and its impact to public caused by mining subsidence, in high groundwater area. The results show that the water area and polder land caused by mining subsidence was the most significance mining disaster in eastern China, which should draw enough attention by land use planner and decision-making department.

Abstract:The land subsidence caused by underground coal mining can lead to topographic change and cause a series of environmental problems such as soil erosion and vegetation degradation, etc. Research on the effects of soil erosion is of great significance to the ecological restoration and environmental protection of mining areas. This paper selected the Bulianta coal mine in Inner Mongolia as a research area. Based on GIS/RS technology, the change in the spatial patterns of soil erosion in the study area were quantitatively evaluated using the rule of mining subsidence and the Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE). The results show that underground coal mining has a significant effect on terrain by changing the slope length and slope steepness (LS), vegetation growth was also affected by a trend of overall reduction. In general, soil erosion in the Bulianta mining area generally showed an increasing trend from pre-mining topography to surface subsidence after mining, both from the perspective of soil erosion area and the perspective of soil erosion quantity.

Abstract:The existing three-dimensional visualisation of mining subsidence cannot fully convey the original landscape in the mining area. By using GIS and coupling the predicted result of subsidence in different mining stages with the original elevation data, a dynamic visualisation of mining process is approached, which could reflect geomorphologic features clearly. Furthermore, it visually shows the variation and the characterisation of the surface subsidence, according to which one can analyse and evaluate the degree of mining subsidence damage. The generated information, such as slope, aspect, stagnant water area and the amount of settlement volume calculation, could provide technical support for reclamation work while mining is in process.

Abstract:Coal mining in high groundwater table areas causes many environmental issues. In China, such regions have three unique and significant characteristics, (1) multiple coal seams; (2) thick coal seams and (3) high groundwater, which lead to mine subsidence ponds. In the past, reclamation of disturbed land was carried out after subsidence stabilised. Such reclamation is a low-percentage of reclaimed farmland, and has high reclamation cost, difficult construction conditions, because of relatively flat terrain and the shortage of backfilling materials in flat topography. Therefore, salvaging the topsoil before it is submerged in water and reusing it while subsidence becomes stable would be a good way to improve the reclamation efficiency. This paper considers a longwall panel in Shandong province as a case study. Dynamic mining subsidence was simulated using mining subsidence prediction software. To illustrate subsidence development and its effects on farmland, the ground was first divided into cell size of 40m along with pre-mining topography. The mining subsidence and water logging time for each cell were then calculated. Based on the simulations, the topsoil removal time, scope and depth of topsoil was determined. The salvaged topsoil could be reused subsequently, which would provide enough filling material to raise the percentage of reclaimed farmland, and reduce reclamation costs. The research benefits the development of concurrent mining and reclamation technology in underground mining sites, and promotes the synchronisation of exploitations and treatments.
Coal Mining Subsidence Data Extraction and Verification in a High Groundwater Area Based on Landsat-8 Imagery and Subsidence Prediction

Abstract:Coal is the main energy resource in China, with its extraction and utilization playing an important role in national economic development. However, coal mining may be causative with respect to critical land subsidence and damage to land. The eastern plain coal mining region of China represents an example of overlapping crop cultivation and coal extraction, and is considered a coal mining area characterized by a high water table. Accordingly, declining ground elevation and seasonal water logging of land due to mining subsidence have become major concerns within the region. Based upon the existing procedure for land reclamation planning, both land damage boundaries and land damage magnitude were determined for the region via subsidence prediction and vertical displacement, respectively. In the current study, a coal mine in Shandong province was employed as a case study area with the following work phases implemented: 1) subsidence prediction was implemented, with land damage magnitude demarcated via the proposed standard; 2) mining induced water area and wetland was extracted via use of remote sensing; 3) comparative analyses of the aforementioned methodologies were undertaken, with a revised methodology proposed for effective provision of improved land damage demarcation. Results indicate that land subsidence at Dongtan coal mines during May 2013 was 1616.70 hm 2 , of which categorically mild, moderate, and severe lands were 22.54 hm 2 , 257.67 hm 2 , and 436.49 hm 2 , respectively.

Abstract:As China’s energy strategy moving westward, the surface movement and deformation characteristics due to high-intensive coal mining in the windy and sandy region become a research hotspot. Surface movement observation stations were established to monitor movement and deformation in one super-large working face. Based on field measurements, the surface movement and deformation characteristics were obtained, including angle parameters, subsidence prediction parameters, etc. Besides, the angle and subsidence prediction parameters in similar mining areas are summarized; the mechanism of surface movement and deformation was analyzed with the combination of key stratum theory, mining and geological conditions. The research also indicates that compared with conventional working faces, uniform subsidence area of the subsidence trough in the windy and sandy region is larger, the trough margins are relative steep and deformation values present convergence at the margins, the extent of the trough shrink towards the goaf and the influence time of mining activities lasts shorter; the overlying rock movement and breaking characteristics presents regional particularity in the study area, while the single key stratum, thin bedrock and thick sand that can rapidly propagate movement and deformation are the deep factors, contributing to it.

Abstract:Geological disasters such as subsidence caused by mining have been continuously affecting people’s production and life. Therefore, how to predict the occurrence of geological disasters such as mining subsidence is an urgent technical problem. The study of mining subsidence prediction can effectively guide the safe production of mining area, and it is of great practical significance. Probability theory is a discipline used to express uncertainty. It provides methods and axioms to quantify and deduce uncertainty, which allows us to reason when uncertainty exists. This paper mainly studies the prediction process of mining subsidence based on machine learning probability theory. In this paper, the mining subsidence problem is studied. The main research contents are as follows: through the research and analysis of the mining subsidence prediction method, the probability integral method is determined as the theoretical basis for the study. The mining parameters are obtained from the three-dimensional geological body model of the mining area, and the prediction parameters are calculated by the least square fitting. This paper makes a detailed plan for the overall design of mining subsidence prediction module, adopts the form of independent research and development and joint development with the existing software, designs five submodules according to the design objectives, principles, and functional needs of the module, and studies the application of mining subsidence prediction module. In this study, it is found that the predicted data of the maximum settlement value appear at the 23rd point, and the maximum value is 1567 mm, which is completely consistent with the change trend of the measured value. The settlement value is calculated from the edge position of the working face to the position where the chariot gradually increases, which conforms to the change law of surface movement and settlement.

Abstract:Surface subsidence resulting from block caving mining causes considerable environmental and economic harm in mining areas, highlighting the critical need for accurate predictions of surface subsidence. Given the unique features of the block caving technique and the resemblance between the released ore pillars and the mining processes, this paper developed a lightweight model to forecast surface settlement utilizing the probability integration approach to address the issue of predicting surface settlement in metallic mines. This study focuses on the Pulang Copper Mine, situated in the northeast of Shangri-La County within the Yunnan Province, as a case example. This mine employs the block caving method, which results in substantial surface subsidence. A visual mining simulation program is designed to combine the ore mining plan with the prediction model, manage the ore output of each mining point in batches, treat the ore pillars released in the planning cycle as strip work, and simulate and calculate the surface area above the ore pillars settlement value. The calculated values of surface subsidence induced by ore drawing are then interpreted as the downward displacement of the surface subsidence beneath the strip workings. Furthermore, to verify the reliability of the model, three-dimensional laser point cloud data of the Pulang Copper Mine in recent years were collected, and the differences between the predicted surface and the measured surface were calculated and analyzed.

Abstract:With the increase of mined-out areas and geological disasters, it is necessary to study the influence range of mining. Moreover, with the growth in the amount of data, machine learning methods are commonly used to predict the surface subsidence. The 10 mm subsidence boundary is an important indicator to determine the influence range, and FLAC3D is suitable for solving the nonlinear large deformation problems. Therefore, it can be used to explore the relationship between the influence range of the surface movement (L) and geological mining conditions. Taking working faces A and B of two mines, through the establishment of a numerical model, the relationship between L and bedrock thickness, loose layer thickness, working face mining length, and overlying rock lithology is explored by using the control variable method. Moreover, the variation law is analyzed theoretically and mechanically. The results show that L is positively correlated with the thickness, while negatively correlated with the mining length. Similarly, L shows a slight increase after the key layer becomes weak. This study provides a scientific basis for reasonable coal mining and protection of surface buildings in the mining area. Integrating machine learning into the numerical model further increases the model throughput. The findings show that machine learning models had high accuracy in predicting surface subsidence, with the random forest trees and regression models having lower time and high accuracy, respectively.

Abstract:Land surface subsidence is an environmental hazard resulting from the extraction of underground resources. In underground mining, when mineral materials are extracted deep within the ground, the emptying or caving of the mined spaces leads to vertical displacement of the ground, known as subsidence. This subsidence can extend to the surface as trough subsidence, as the movement and deformation of the hanging-wall rocks of the mining stope propagate upwards. Accurately predicting subsidence is crucial for estimating damage and protecting surface buildings and structures in mining areas. Therefore, developing a model that considers all relevant parameters for subsidence estimation is essential. In this article, we discuss the prediction of land subsidence caused by the caving of a stop's roof, focusing on coal mining using the longwall method. The main aim of this research is to improve the accuracy of prediction models of land subsidence due to mining. For this purpose, we consider a total of 11 parameters related to coal mining, including mining thickness and depth (related to the deposit), as well as density, cohesion, internal friction angle, elasticity modulus, bulk modulus, shear modulus, Poisson's ratio, uniaxial compressive strength, and tensile strength (related to the overburden). We utilize information collected from 14 coal mines regarding mining and subsidence to achieve this. We then explore the prediction of subsidence caused by mining using the gene expression programming (GEP) algorithm, optimized through a combination of the artificial bee colony (ABC) and ant lion optimizer (ALO) algorithms. Modeling results demonstrate that combining the GEP algorithm with optimization based on the ABC algorithm yields the best subsidence prediction, achieving a correlation coefficient of 0.96. Furthermore, sensitivity analysis reveals that mining depth and density have the greatest and least effects, respectively, on land surface subsidence resulting from coal mining using the longwall method.
A Method for Predicting the Surface Subsidence Duration and the Maximum Subsidence Velocity

Abstract:The surface subsidence duration and the maximum subsidence velocity are critical indicators to evaluate the stability and severity of surface damage. Precisely predicting them is important for guiding engineering design and protecting ground infrastructure. Traditional manual measurement methods are time-consuming and laborious, and the existing empirical formulas have low accuracy and poor applicability. Therefore, a new prediction method was established in this paper. Measured data from 30 mining areas were used for verification. The results show that the predicted surface subsidence duration is basically consistent with the measured value. The standard deviation of the two is 61 d, and the relative standard deviation is 6.6%. The predicted surface maximum subsidence velocity is basically consistent with the measured value. The standard deviation of the two is 10.0 mm/d, and the relative standard deviation is 1.6%. The surface subsidence duration and the maximum subsidence velocity are positively correlated with the coal seam thickness, negatively and positively correlated with the mining speed, and positively and negatively correlated with the mining depth. The mining speed and mining depth have the same sensitivity to the two indicators, and the coal seam thickness is more sensitive to the surface subsidence duration. Furthermore, construction within the subsidence basin may further contribute to surface subsidence. Therefore, land reuse measures should be implemented following the predicted surface subsidence duration in this paper. This study addresses the knowledge gap in this field by deriving theoretical formulas for surface subsidence duration and maximum subsidence velocity. In the absence of sufficient measured data, engineers can calculate predicted values in combination with geological mining conditions and develop appropriate mining plans based on the extent of surface subsidence.

Abstract:With economic development and coal resource exploitation, the area of mined-out zones is expanding continuously. The traditional waste disposal methods no longer meet the current demands, making it urgent to evaluate and reuse the surface stability of these mined-out zones. Surface residual deformation is a process where voids and fissures within the mined-out zones are gradually filled and compacted, affecting the overlying rock structure. Additionally, groundwater significantly impacts the strength of the overlying rock, leading to increased subsidence. Therefore, predicting surface residual deformation while considering the effects of groundwater is crucial for forecasting surface deformation and assessing stability in mined-out zones. This study, taking into account the characteristics of subsidence zones and the impact of groundwater on the compaction of fractured rock masses, uses equivalent mining height and probability integral methods to develop a predictive model for surface residual deformation incorporating groundwater effects. Predictions for the study area show that groundwater exacerbates surface residual deformation, with various deformation values ranging from 33.8% to 51.9%. The surface stability categories are divided into stable and essentially stable regions based on the residual deformation's impact on the working face. This model fully considers the influence of groundwater on residual deformation in mined-out zones, refining existing mining subsidence theories, addressing deformation issues caused by adverse groundwater factors, and providing a theoretical basis for predicting residual deformation and evaluating stability in mined-out zones, promoting the sustainable development of land and environmental resources in mining areas.

Abstract:Surface subsidence induced by underground mining is one of the challenging problems in mining engineering, which can destroy ground surface buildings and cause huge economic losses to the mine. In this study, a two-dimensional numerical model, established by the discrete element method code PFC2D, was adopted to investigate the mechanical mechanism of surface subsidence and backfill material movement induced by underground mining in the Hongling lead-zinc mine. In the first simulation case, the ore body was excavated from the ground surface to the mining level 705 m by the sublevel caving mining method, and the stress evolution during the mining process was analyzed to reveal the mechanical mechanism of surface subsidence. In the second and third simulation cases, the mined-out areas above 905 m were backfilled by the noncemented tailings and an insulating pillar was reserved beneath the backfill material, and then the deep ore body was excavated by two different mining methods to study the movement law of the backfill material and rock strata induced by underground mining. The numerical simulation results show that when the sublevel caving mining method is adopted, underground mining can induce toppling failures in the hanging wall and lead to a large collapse pit in the ground surface. After the toppling failures in the hanging wall, the collapsed waste rock in the mined-out area can provide support force for the surrounding rock and restrict the further collapse of the hanging wall. Furthermore, when the cut-and-fill mining method is adopted for the excavation of deep ore body, the insulating pillar can restrict the horizontal displacement of surrounding rock and maintain the stability of the backfill material. The cut-and-fill mining method can efficiently control the surface subsidence and prevent the occurrence of collapse pit in the ground surface and is recommended for the Hongling lead-zinc mine to solve the surface subsidence problem.

Abstract:In order to predict the surface subsidence scientifically in solid filling mining, it is necessary to establish a complete subsidence prediction model and parameter system according to the evolution law of overburden structure and strata movement characteristics. Mine pressure monitoring and borehole peeping show that the overburden in solid filling mining is mainly a bending zone with relatively complete layered structure, and the overburden only develops a certain height of fault zone near the roof, without collapse. The results show that the surface subsidence pattern of solid filling mining can still be described by probability integral model, and the parameter system of the surface subsidence prediction model based on “equivalent mining height” is further discussed. Finally, the prediction model of surface subsidence established in this paper is applied to an engineering example, and good results are achieved.

Abstract:In view of the problem of surface subsidence and landslide caused by repeated mining in southwest China. Taking Anshun Coal Mine in Anshun City, Guizhou Province, as the engineering background, the surface subsidence is predicted by using the probability integral method, and then analyzed by using UDEC numerical simulation software and the physical similarity simulation experiment with XTDIC system. The results show that the maximum predicted subsidence value of single coal seam mining is 1.8 m, and the maximum predicted subsidence value under repeated mining is 3.78 m, which is similar to the results of similar simulation experiment and numerical simulation. Through similar simulation experiments, it is found that the initial weighting step of the main roof of Anshun Coal Mine is 32 m, the periodic weighting step is 12 m, and the key stratum caving step is 80 m. Under repeated mining, the first weighting step of the main roof is reduced to 20 m, the average periodic weighting step is reduced to 8 m, and the surface subsidence increases significantly. Through numerical simulation analysis, it is found that the surface subsidence under the original horizon of the key stratum is almost the same as that of the similar simulation experiment. The higher the key strata, the larger the collapse step of the key strata, and the smaller the subsidence caused by the surface.

Abstract:Underground mining causes surface subsiding, resulting in damage of surface building. Surface subsidence is limited by many factors such as geologic conditions and mining conditions. There are nonlinear relations between the factors and it is difficult to describe it by a mathematical model, therefore, there are difficulties in solving some problems. The surface subsidence is predicted by the neural network system. The system is trained and tested by the data collected in tests. It has achieved satisfactory results, and there are very small errors between the predicted and the expected values. The results prove that it is feasible to use neural network to predict the surface subsidence.

Abstract:Subsidence data acquisition methods are crucial to mining subsidence research and an essential component of achieving the goal of environmentally friendly coal mining. The origin and history of the existing methods of field monitoring, calculation, and simulation were introduced. It summarized and analyzed the main applications, flaws and solutions, and improvements of these methods. Based on this analysis, the future developing directions of subsidence data acquisition methods were prospected and suggested. The subsidence monitoring methods have evolved from conventional ground monitoring to combined methods involving ground-based, space-based, and air-based measurements. While the conventional methods are mature in technology and reliable in accuracy, emerging remote sensing technologies have obvious advantages in terms of reducing field workload and increasing data coverage. However, these remote sensing methods require further technological development to be more suitable for monitoring mining subsidence. The existing subsidence calculation methods have been applied to various geological and mining conditions, and many improvements have already been made. In the future, more attention should be paid to unifying the studies of calculation methods and mechanical principles. The simulation methods are quite dependent on the similarity of the model to the site conditions and are generally used as an auxiliary data source for subsidence studies. The cross-disciplinary studies between subsidence data acquisition methods and other technologies should be given serious consideration, as they can be expected to lead to breakthroughs in areas such as theories, devices, software, and other aspects.

Abstract:Because of the easily caused damage to ground buildings by shallow coal seam mining under the hard roof, backfill-strip mining has been gradually adopted to realize the sustainable development of mining and protection of ground buildings. The surface subsidence prediction method in backfill-strip mining is not clear enough to the shallow coal seam under the hard roof. This paper adopts the numerical simulation method to study the surface movement characteristics of shallow coal seam backfill-strip mining under the hard roof. The results show that the maximum surface subsidence and the stress of the filling body are directly proportional to the width of the caving mining working face in the range of 30 ~ 80 m. The stress of the coal pillars on both sides is unchanged. The thickness from the wave band to the surface conforms to the quadratic function. The characteristics of surface movement conform to the prediction model of the probability integral method. Based on the probability integral method, the superposition calculation method of backfill-strip mining is deduced, and the prediction parameters calculation equation of the whole backfill-strip mining area is given. Finally, 5 backfill-strip mining schemes are designed in combination with the case. According to the protection index and the economic benefits, the best mining scheme is determined. The research results provide a reference for surface subsidence prediction in similar geological conditions.

Abstract:<p>Surface subsidence caused by underground mining is a complicated spatiotemporal process. This study establishes a novel mining subsidence superposition model using variable mining thickness of coal seam by combining two models based on rock rheology theory and the Weibull subsidence method. This model better characterises the surface subsidence mechanism under geological conditions of thick bedrock and thin loose layer, and the prediction results are close to actual measurements. The bedrock and loose layer are considered viscoelastic beam and homogeneous body, respectively. The bedrock and loose layer are analysed using the theories of mechanical movement and mathematical models, respectively. Based on actual geological conditions of a mine in East China, the mechanical parameters were substituted into the Weibull composite subsidence prediction model (WCSPM) and the probability integral composite subsidence prediction model (PICSPM), and the predictions of surface subsidence movement parameters were obtained. The prediction results of the WCSPM are closer to the measured surface subsidence values, thereby verifying the applicability of the theoretical model in engineering practice. This model enables the construction of structures in mining-induced subsidence areas with confidence.</p>

Abstract:As a common geological disaster, surface subsidence caused by mining underground resources has always been a hot and difficult topic in the civil engineering field. Aimed at the shortcomings of existing time function models in predicting mining subsidence in deep soil strata, a more accurate and reasonable time function model, called the composite function model, was established based on an inverted analysis of measured data. The results showed that the composite function model could describe the whole subsidence process of a deep soil surface and agreed well with the measured data. The model parameters were calculated by specific formulas, which improved the reliability of the subsidence prediction results under different mining conditions. The new model provided important guiding significance for preventing subsidence geological disasters and determining the coal mining time under the buildings, the railways, and the water bodies in deep soil strata.
