Abstract:Objective To investigate the application and aesthetic efficacy of"kite"flaps in the repair of facial soft tissue defects.Methods The"kite"flaps were used for the repair of facial soft tissue defects in 32patients.Among them,traumatic skin defect occurred in 9,benign lesion in 14 and malignant tumor in 9.After deciding to use"kite"flap repair,triangular"kite"flaps were designed on the side of the defect along the dermatoglyphs or wrinkles.The width of flaps was equal to or slightly less than the diameter of the wounds.Subcutaneous tissue and tissue beneath skin flap were used as pedicles to produce the flaps.The advancement flap repair was performed and then subcutaneous dissection was carried out.Skin defects were directly sutured.For the larger oblong wounds,two"kite"flaps were designed along the long axis of the oval and flaps advanced in the opposite direction to repair wounds.The wounds were closed with 6-0subcutaneous absorbable interrupted sutures.The skin was closed with 7-0sutures.Results Stitches were removed on postoperative day 5to 7and no hematoma,infection,necrosis and other complications occurred in all patients.All flaps survived with stageⅠincision healing and abundant blood supply.After 6-12months of follow-up,all flaps survived well with same or similar color and texture to surrounding skin.No secondary injury was observed in other parts of the body.No recurrence and metastasis occurred and scars were not obvious in patients with malignant tumors.Conclusion The"kite"flap repair is simple to operate and does not affect facial form in patients with middle area of facial wounds caused by tumor resection or trauma.In addition,"kite"flaps produce same color,texture,luster and actinic damage degree with adjacent skin.Therefore,the"kite"flap repair can achieve ideal surgery and aesthetic efficacy in facial soft tissue defects.
