Abstract:The social force model has been widely used to simulate pedestrian evacuation by analyzing attractive, repulsive, driving, and fluctuating forces among pedestrians. Many researchers have improved its limitations in simulating behaviors of large-scale population. This study modifies the well-accepted social force model by considering the impacts of interaction among companions and further develops a comprehensive model by combining that with a multi-exit utility function. Then numerical simulations of evacuations based on the comprehensive model are implemented in the waiting hall of the Wulin Square Subway Station in Hangzhou, China. The results provide safety thresholds of pedestrian density and panic levels in different operation situations. In spite of the operation situation and the panic level, a larger friend-group size results in lower evacuation efficiency. Our study makes important contributions to building a comprehensive multi-exit social force model and to applying it to actual scenarios, which produces data to facilitate decision making in contingency plans and emergency treatment.

Abstract:Emergency evacuation plays an important role in urban safety planning.In urban accident rescue,it is very important to evacuate as many people as possible to safe areas in limited time with limited relief resources.In order to find an optimal strategy for the urban emergency evacuation and vehicle allocation,an urban dynamic emergency evacuation mode is studied.This paper establishes a model for urban dynamic emergency evacuation and vehicle allocation considering the time constraint,which is aimed to maximize the number of evacuated people.Then,the model is solved by the multidimensional dynamic planning method.Finally,the simulation results show that the model and solution strategy are efficient and effective.

Abstract:Timely and secure evacuation of residents in communities is of great importance during unexpected disasters or emergency events. This study proposes a framework of evacuation simulation for optimizing emergency management in urban residential communities. Compared to traditional methods, the advantage of our framework lies in three aspects: (1) The method highlights easy-crowded areas in both indoor and outdoor evacuations. (2) Family behaviors are considered and implemented in evacuations. (3) Detailed measures on management optimization are spatially mapped based on a multi-level analysis and the comparison of evacuation simulation results in different scenarios. A case study in Changhongfang residential community, Xuhui District, Shanghai, China, was conducted to demonstrate the method feasibility. Simulation results have exposed potential evacuation problems in the community. A series of detailed recommended measures have been generated. These measures can help to create better emergency management for the community.

Abstract:As an important part of emergency management,the regional evacuation process indeed involves movement of people by vehicles,which may generate many traffic trips during limited time.Efficient tools are needed to establish evacuation routing plans that identify routes and departure schedule for each group of vehicles to ensure safety and order.Many research works have described the optimization of the evacuation problem as a network flow problem and used network flow algorithms to produce origin-destination route and departure schedule of evacuation vehicles in each origin.However,little attention has been given to an important feature of traffic flow,which captures the fact that travel speed is not only time-dependant but also flow or density-dependant.A simultaneous route and departure time optimization model is presented for evacuation planning,in which the critical constraints that describe traffic flow propagation were addressed through a simulation loading module.A simulationbased heuristic algorithm is proposed according to the condition for the optimal solution of the model.A numerical example is given at last.

Abstract:Determining how to reasonably allocate shelters in the central area of the city and improve evacuation efficiency are important issues in the field of urban disaster prevention. This paper introduces the methodology and mathematical model from the field of crowd emergency evacuation to shelter location optimization. Moreover, a shelter location optimization method based on the combination of static network analysis and dynamic evacuation simulation is proposed. The construction costs and evacuation times are taken as the objective functions. In the first stage, based on the static network analysis, a circular evacuation allocation rule based on the gravity model is proposed, and the genetic algorithm is then designed to solve the feasible schemes with the lowest shelter construction costs. In the second stage, the evacuation time is taken as the optimization objective. The age differences of refugees, the selection of evacuation routes, and the behavior of adults helping children and the elderly are simulated in a dynamic evacuation simulation model. The traditional social force model is improved to conduct a regional evacuation simulation and determine the optimal scheme with the shortest evacuation time. Finally, the central urban area of Xinyi City, Jiangsu Province, China, is taken as an empirical case.

Abstract:Emergency evacuation planning in high-density communities is an important measure to improve the safety resilience of community. This study presents an optimal design method of emergency evacuation space in high-density community based on multi-agent simulation and multi-objective optimization models. The influence of community building debris caused by earthquake on evacuation passageway was analyzed. The properties of residents in the community and their characteristics of psycho-behaviors after earthquake were clarified. A simulation model for emergency evacuation in the high-density communities considering the changes of community environment and psychological-behavioral characteristics of residents was established. On the basis of evacuation simulation analysis, an optimal design method of emergency evacuation space in the high-density communities based on time satisfaction was proposed. Finally, the proposed method was applied into the two old communities, that is, Healthy West Village and Healthy New Village communities in Rugao City, to simulate and analyze the effects of factors such as building debris, psychological panic and cooperative behaviors on the evacuation process of the communities, and the evacuation organization and shelter space in communities were optimized. In view of organized evacuation of community residential buildings, the responsibility scope of emergency shelters was determined, and its scientific rationality was verified by emergency evacuation simulation.

Abstract:Guaranteeing efficient evacuations in urban communities is critical for preserving lives, minimizing disaster impacts, and promoting community resilience. Challenges such as high population density, limited evacuation routes, and communication breakdowns complicate evacuation efforts. Vulnerable populations, urban infrastructure constraints, and the increasing frequency of disasters further contribute to the complexity. Despite these challenges, the importance of timely evacuations lies in safeguarding human safety, enabling rapid disaster response, preserving critical infrastructure, and reducing economic losses. Overcoming these hurdles necessitates comprehensive planning, investment in resilient infrastructure, effective communication strategies, and continuous community engagement to foster preparedness and enhance evacuation efficiency. This research looks into the complexities of evacuation dynamics within urban residential areas, placing a particular focus on the interaction between joint-rental arrangements and family ties and their influence on evacuation strategies during emergency situations. Using agent-based modeling, evacuation simulation scenarios are implemented using the Changhongfang community (Shanghai) while systematically exploring how diverse interpersonal relationships impact the efficiency of evacuation processes. The adopted methodology encompasses a series of group experiments designed to determine the optimal proportions of joint-rental occupants within the community. Furthermore, the research examines the impact of various exit selection strategies on evacuation efficiency. Simulation outcomes shed light on the fundamental role of interpersonal factors in shaping the outcomes of emergency evacuations. Additionally, this study emphasizes the critical importance of strategic exit selections, revealing their potential to significantly enhance overall evacuation efficiency in urban settings.

Abstract:Evacuation shelter and route selection are indispensable parts of emergency planning. An efficient plan can effectively evacuate people from a dangerous place to a safer location. Meanwhile, it is crucial to improve risk management. This article presents a multi-objective optimization algorithm based on social media and GIS to optimize shelter usage and personnel distribution considering social relationship. The proposed algorithm is examined using a case study for the Zhongguancun district in Beijing. The district is modeled by the graph theory. Traffic route data and population distribution are synthesized to form a risk map. Furthermore, the Floyd-Warshall algorithm is adopted to find a shortest path route in order to relocate evacuees to a safer place effectively. Efficiency, fairness and social relation are taken into consideration in this context.
Optimization of Evacuation Routes Considering Movements at Intersections

Abstract:Evacuation plays an important role in emergency management. Efficient tools are needed to produce evacuation route plans that identify routes of evacuation vehicles to minimize the time to evacuate people from affected sources to safety sites. Most research on the optimization of evacuation routes does not explicitly consider intersection movements. However, in congested street networks, turning movement delays traffic and capacity limitations at intersections may be significant, and thus ignoring them may lead to suboptimal or illogical routes. Considering the turning movement at intersections, a special network is constructed with the capacity and delay of intersection movements as the weights. Evacuation routes and the flow assigned to each route considering intersection movements can be obtained by searching the minimum cost flow in such network, with cost representing time. A successive shortest path algorithm is presented to find the minimum cost flow in such network. The validity of the method is demonstrated via a numerical example. The routes obtained for the example, when considering or ignoring intersection movements, are compared and analyzed, which indicates that congestion is quite likely to occur if executing a route plan that ignores movements at intersections.

Abstract:In the emergency evacuation of high-rise apartment, how to quickly and effectively evacuate people has become the focus of attention. In this paper, a college student apartment as the research object, and the evacuation path structure is optimized. The security windows in the first floor are changed into smart switch anti-theft windows, so that each room becomes a temporary evacuation channel, and the "multi source and two sink" is changed into "multi source and multi sink". The model was built using Anylogic software, and the existing evacuation plan and the optimized evacuation plan are simulated and compared. The results show that the evacuation time of the optimized evacuation scheme was reduced from 810s to 375s, evacuation efficiency increased by 53.7%. This paper presents a new structure and program of evacuation of buildings, which can improve the evacuation efficiency in the current situation and provide support for high-level emergency rescue and has the prospect of promotion.

Abstract:This paper describes the design and implementation of an evacuation simulation model developed based on the Traffic Grid Model in NetLogo. In this model, different scenarios were tested in order to find out the best strategy within specific environments. The model is flexible and includes many parameters to adjust to environment conditions and agent rules. These parameters can be modified to study which driving factors contribute most to drivers' evacuation performance. This research also focuses on the method of results analysis and traffic performance evaluation for different combinations of two model parameters. In each experiment, we analysed metrics such as evacuation time and average car speed for each strategy under different population distribution patterns. The results showed that this model could reveal an effective evacuation strategy for realistic scenarios.

Abstract:Guidance‐assisted crowd evacuation is a process of combining individual exit choice behavior with managers' exit assignment control. The knowledge of individual exit choice preference is of great significance for optimizing global exit assignment planning. This study proposes an improved optimization model for crowd evacuation by integrating the individual‐level exit choice preference analysis with system‐level exit assignment optimization to represent more realistic crowd evacuation decisions. First, the impact factors of individual exit choice behavior are considered in a mixed logit model to predict the probability of each individual choosing each exit in specific situations. Second, a preference‐based exit filtering strategy is designed to analyze the sensible alternative exits for individuals or groups in multi‐scale evacuation cells. Finally, to pursue optimal exit assignment planning, a multi‐objective particle swarm optimization algorithm and an improved social force model are adopted to simulate the process of crowd evacuation and evaluate the performance of the specific exit assignment plans. The case study of an outdoor multiple‐exit scenario in Xi'an, China, indicates that the proposed model can help managers to understand the heterogeneity of individual evacuation behaviors. Furthermore, it will support more reliable and realistic evacuation decisions in real‐life situations than conventional plans that typically implement the top‐ n strategy.

Abstract:Among researches on people evacuation under emergency, there are no deep touch of coordinating evacuation strategy of human and traffic, and also can not set models and simulate the whole process of evacuation. This research focused on the human evacuation under emergencies, divided the situations into Not Intervene and May Intervene, analyzed the coordination system and probed the model of coordinating evacuation. Based on the result of crowd simulation, the author could forecast the result of human evacuation and find the optimal traffic schedule proposal. The author took use of the improved Genetic Algorithm as well as the distributed coordinating simulation, finally found a systematic optimal scheduling program and revealed the internal regular pattern of coordinating evacuation.

Abstract:Urban evacuation is of great significance in saving human lives when disasters strike major cities. Comparing with the large population to evacuate, the number of evacuation guiders is much smaller. Since the location of evacuation guiders can greatly influence the evacuation process, it is crucial to identify the most critical locations to assign guiders. The assignment optimization for evacuation guiders usually suffers from partial information, partial control, uncertainty of individual behaviors and ever-changing traffic conditions during an evacuation. We divide this important problem into two parts: initial location assignment optimization and dynamic reassignment optimization. Both of them are considered in this paper and the major contributions are as follows. First, we mathematically model the assignment optimization problem using Markov decision process (MDP) framework. Second, we make a comparison among three methods that can be applied in initial location assignment optimization. Third, a simulation-based policy improvement method is developed to obtain optimal reassignment policies. Forth, some numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the performance of our methods. We hope this work sheds insight on evacuation guider assignment optimization problem in more general situations.

Abstract:This study aims to explore the regional evacuation of mass vehicles before the predictable natural disasters' landfall including typhoon, hurricane, and flooding. A two-level framework based on optimization and micro-simulation is presented to model the traffic management of regional evacuation. The upper level model based on the revised cell transmission theory is capable of identifying the candidate set of optimal evacuation plans in a timely manner even for large networks. Then, the responsible system users can finalize the control plans with a pre-calibrated simulator that can realistically replicate some critical operational features and driver response difficult to fully capture with analytical formulations. The results of case study show that the proposed optimization-simulation framework has a great potential to improve the efficiency of evacuation planning and operations. ©2009 by Science Press.

Abstract:Recently, global natural disasters have occurred frequently and caused serious damage. As an important urban space resource and public service facility, the reasonable planning and layout optimization of shelters is very important to reduce the disaster loss and improve the sustainable development of cities. Based on the review of location theory and models for shelter site selection, this study constructs a bi-level multi-objective location-allocation model, an accessibility, economy, and efficiency (AEE) model, based on sequential decision logic to maximize the economic sustainability and social utility. The model comprehensively considers factors such as the level of decision-making, the utilization efficiency, and capacity constraints of shelters. The gravity model is introduced to simulate the decision-making behavior of evacuees. A calculation example and its solution prove the high practicability and operability of the AEE model in an actual shelter site selection and construction investment, which can achieve the global optimization of evacuation time and the maximization of the use efficiency of the shelters under the financial constraints. It provides a scientific and effective decision-making method for the multi-objective location optimization problem of shelters.

Abstract:Based on analysis of temporal and spatial distribution of pedestrian during evacuation, the opportunity model was used to estimate destination choices of pedestrians and an OD matrix was obtained. Then, evacuation process was simulated in VISSIM environment, and time needed to evacuate all residents in the residential district was calculated. Pedestrian's distribution was changed after adjusting layout of residential buildings, and corresponding simulation results were observed and comparative analysis was done. The results indicate that efficiency of evacuation under decentralized layout of buildings is higher than the one under centralized layout.

Abstract:Abstract Two multi-exit selection models based on social force model are presented to simulate pedestrian evacuation, and the model coefficients are optimized by considering the effect of the exit distance, exit width, crowd number and distribution. The evacuation processes employing shortest distance evacuation strategy, static and dynamic exit selection model are compared. The effects of the crowd number, distribution and desired speed are investigated on the evacuation time and balance degree with the static and dynamic exit selection model. The effects of group size and group shape on the evacuation time in dynamic exit selection model is explored. The simulation results indicate that the proposed dynamic exit selection model can realistically reflect the pedestrian evacuation and help predicate the time available in building spaces with multiple exits, which can lead to a shorter evacuation time and higher evacuation efficiency. The study has some guiding significance for emergency evacuation and exits design of multi-exit buildings.

Abstract:An urban evacuation simulation system was developed incorporating Agent model to GIS system. Agents choose routes by A* algorithm. Three types of route choice strategies were discussed. An evacuation scenario was set up based on the real data of city roads and population. The simulation results show that for the pedestrian evacuation by walking, the differences among evacuation time under different route choice strategies are small. While for the evacuation by cars, the differences are much obvious. Under different route choice strategies, the distributions of traffic are different, and there are different jam and bottleneck characteristics. Appropriate information strategies should be taken to guide traffic.

Abstract:The evacuation in the university building complex involving a variety of campus buildings and a high density of occupants is barely simulated, especially by considering the safety awareness of evacuees and the impact of measured stair evacuation speed. This paper simulates and optimizes the fire emergency evacuation scheme of a university building complex in Northwest China by using BIM technology and Pathfinder simulation evacuation software. The proposed evacuation optimization scheme of university building complex reduces the evacuation time by 15-20% compared with the original evacuation scheme of the university. Through the simulation, it is found that the evacuation time required for sleeping at night is the shortest, while the longest evacuation time is required during lunch, due to the dispersion of students. Therefore, in addition to considering the safety awareness of the evacuees and the measured evacuation speed of stairs, the corresponding campus evacuation plan should be formulated according to the distribution of buildings in the campus complex and the actual utilization in different periods, so as to avoid the safety exit congestion and being far away from the refuge, due to the dense population in a specific period of time. This study also provides a method for solving the problem of regional evacuation path planning.
