Abstract:Pd(II)-catalyzed oxidation of terminal olefins to methyl ketones has emerged as an attractive strategy for organic synthesis. Here we report the Pd(II)-catalyzed selective oxidation of olefins using tert-butyl hydroperoxide as the oxidant and 2-(1H-indazol-1-yl)quinoline as the ligand. A wide range of olefins were well tolerated in this reaction system to provide methyl ketones, whereas the presence of Ac2O initiated the oxo-acyloxylation to afford the α-acetoxyacetone products. Isotope labeling studies and active-intermediate-capture experiments were performed to elucidate the underlying selective reaction mechanism. Notably, the generation of α-acetoxyacetone products involves the palladium enolate intermediate while the methyl ketone products were generated through the most commonly proposed alkylperoxide intermediates, followed by 1,2-hydride migration.
Exceptional Selectivity to Olefins in the Deoxygenation of Fatty Acids over an Intermetallic Platinum–Zinc Alloy

Abstract:Direct deoxygenation of long-chain fatty acids can produce both saturated alkanes (CnH2n+2) and unsaturated olefins (CnH2n). However, the selectivity for the production of olefins via the decarbonylation route is relatively low because of the more favorable decarboxylation pathway. We present an atomically ordered intermetallic PtZn alloy on carbon catalyst (PtZn/C) with a record-high total selectivity (97 %) for undecane (C11H24) and undecene (C11H22) in the deoxygenation of lauric acid (C12H24O2). Interestingly, the selectivity for C11H22 is as high as 67.0 % on PtZn/C, which is significantly higher than that of 27.5 % obtained on the Pt/C counterpart under the same reaction conditions. Characterization and theoretical calculation results reveal that the intermetallic PtZn alloy not only inhibits the decarboxylation route by increasing the energy barrier of -COO* cleavage, but also facilitates the decarbonylation route by decreasing CO desorption energy, and therefore the major product is switched from alkanes to olefins.

Abstract:Selective oxidation of olefins to alpha,beta-unsaturated ketones under mild reaction conditions has attracted considerable interest, since alpha,beta-unsaturated ketones can serve as synthetic precursors for various downstream chemical products. The major inherent challenges with this chemical oxidation are chemo- and regio-selectivity as well as environmental concerns, i.e. catalyst recycle, safety and cost. Using atmospheric oxygen as an environmentally friendly oxidant, we found that a metal-organic framework (MOF) constructed with Mn and a tetrazolate ligand (CPF-5) showed good activity and selectivity for the allylic oxidation of olefins to alpha,beta-unsaturated ketones. Under the optimized conditions, we could achieve 98% conversion of cyclohexene and 87% selectivity toward cyclohexanone. The combination of a substoichiometric amount of TBHP (tert-butylhydroperoxide) and oxygen not only provides a cost effective oxidation system but significantly enhances the selectivity to alpha,beta-unsaturated ketones, outperforming most reported oxidation methods. This catalytic system is heterogeneous in nature, and CPF-5 could be reused at least five times without a significant decrease in its catalytic activity and selectivity.

Abstract:An efficient and economical palladium-catalyzed oxidation system has been identified. The oxidation system, characterized by not adding ligand and using molecular oxygen as the sole oxidant, can realize the Tsuji-Wacker oxidation of terminal olefins and especially styrenes to methyl ketones; in addition, this system can achieve tandem Wacker oxidation-dehydrogenation of terminal olefins to α,β-unsaturated ketones.

Abstract:A palladium-catalyzed olefin epoxidation reaction was developed using electrophilic reagents as oxidants. The modular synthesis of various alkyl alcohols, alkyl esters, and alkyl halides was achieved in good to excellent yields. These products can be used to synthesize potential drug ibuprofen derivatives. A preliminary mechanistic study shows that SN2 attack by the nucleophilic reagents in the system creates the final C–O bond and an SN1 reaction of halide ions creates a C–X bond.

Abstract:The attractive challenge in green chemistry is exploring novel heterogeneous catalyst system for catalyst-controlled product selectivity for oxidation of olefins. Hence, we proposed efficient and green catalytic methods for the selective synthesis of aldehydes and ketones, the selectivity of the reaction is exclusively dependent on the metals from the catalyst. A series of novel glycosyl pyridyl triazole-platinum (GPT-Pt) complex have been successfully synthesized and fully characterized for the first time. The GPT-Pt catalysts have been applied in the selective oxidative cleavage of alkenes to yield the corresponding aldehydes in the presence of H2O2 as an oxidant in water. With GPT-Pd as the catalyst, the oxidation reaction give the ketones as the main products. Moreover, the catalysts were recovered and reused six times without significant yield decrease. Novel glycosyl pyridyl triazole-platinum (GPT-Pt) complex have been successfully synthesized.The selective synthesis of aldehydes or ketones is exclusively dependent on the metals from the catalyst. Moreover, the catalysts can be separated and reused at least six times with superior activity.

Abstract:A series of modified chloromethyl polystyrene resins loaded with peroxo phosphotungstic acid catalysts were synthesized for the selective oxidation of cyclohexene. The surface of resin was enriched with high concentration quaternary ammonium salt, and grafted with a large amount of peroxo PW-anion through ion exchange. The novel resin catalyst showed excellent cyclohexene conversion and epoxide selectivity using 30% H2O2 as oxidant at ambient temperature. Furthermore, the resin catalyst exhibited excellent recycling stability, which can be reused by a simple filtration and the peroxo phosphotungstic acid did not leach into the solvent after reaction.

Abstract:A highly diastereoselective Pd-catalyzed carbonyl allylation of aldehydes and isatins directly using simple acyclic olefins as allylating reagents is described. This transformation is actually a sequential process consisting of a Pd-catalyzed oxidative allylic C-H borylation and an allylboration of carbonyls accelerated by phosphoric acid, wherein a wide scope of olefins could be tolerated. The oxidant is revealed to play a key role in the successful realization of the allylic C-H activation-based allylation.

Abstract:A palladium(II)‐catalyzed oxidative C‐H olefination of chlorobenzene derivatives, which favored the functionalization at the ortho‐to‐chlorine position, was reported. The catalytic system employed a commercially available quinoline ligand to access a wide panel of olefinated aryl chlorides in moderate to high yields from feedstock chemicals (42 examples, 28 to 93% yields). The synthetic utility of the method was further demonstrated by the coupling of various bio‐relevant acrylate partners offering straightforward access to structurally diverse complex molecules. A computational study of the reaction allowed us to confirm that the C‐H activation step, occurring through a concerted metalation‐deprotonation mechanism, determined the site‐selectivity of the transformation. The regioselectivity was controlled by the pKa of the C‐H bond (more acidic position) and the lower distortion of chlorobenzene in the key transition structure.

Abstract:A palladium(II)-catalyzed β,γ-aminohydroxylation reaction of nonconjugated alkenyl carbonyl compounds has been developed. This reaction utilizes a cleavable bidentate directing group to achieve regioselective aminopalladation. The resulting chelation-stabilized alkylpalladium(II) intermediate is then hydroxylated using oxygen/2,6-dimethylbenzoquinone in HFIP as the mild oxidation system. Under the optimized conditions, various nucleophiles and alkene substrates are capable of delivering good yields and high diastereoselectivities of the aminohydroxylated products.

Abstract:A series of olefins were oxidized using H2O2,V2O5,Aliquat 336 and water.The influence of catalyst,dosage of PTC and hydrogen peroxide were discussed.The most optimum condition was as follows,substrate ∶ V2O5∶H2O2∶ Aliquat 336 =1∶ 0.04∶ 2.5∶ 0.15.The experimental results of oxidation of different olefins showed that the electron rich olefins could be selectively oxidized in the system built by H2O2,V2O5,Aliquat 336 and water.

Abstract:The development of a mechanochemical Fe-catalyzed Wacker oxidation of olefins with a sustainable and benign procedure holds significant promise for industrial applications. However, navigating the intricate interactions inherent in ball-milling conditions to fine-tune reaction selectivity remains a formidable challenge. Herein, leveraging the dispersive and/or trapping properties of cyclodextrins, an innovative mechanochemical approach is developed through the integration of cyclodextrins into a Fe-catalyzed system, enabling a streamlined Wacker oxidation process from simple and/or commercially available alkenes. Our efforts have yielded optimized mechanochemical conditions demonstrating exceptional reactivity and selectivity in generating a diverse array of ketone products, markedly enhancing catalytic efficiency compared to conventional batch methods. Mechanistic investigations have revealed a predominantly Markovnikov-selective catalytic cycle, effectively minimizing undesired alcohol formation, hydrogenation, and the other competing pathways, boosting both reaction yield and selectivity.

Abstract:Dual-metalloporphyrins catalytic system based on T(p-Cl)PPCo and T(p-Cl)PPZn was presented to enhance the oxidation of cycloalkanes, especially for cyclohexane, the selectivity towards KA oil increasing from 90.7% to nearly 100.0%, meanwhile the conversion increasing from 3.42% to 4.29%. Enhancement on conversion and selectivity was realized simultaneously. In the dual-metalloporphyrins system, T(p-Cl)PPCo served the role to activate molecular oxygen and promote the decomposition of cyclohexyl hydroperoxide, and T(p-Cl)PPZn catalyzed the decomposition of cyclohexyl hydroperoxide to avoid unselective thermal decomposition. This protocol is also very applicable to other cycloalkanes and will provide a applicable strategy to enhance the oxidation of alkanes.

Abstract:A novel heterogeneous catalyst with iron chloride immobilized on pyridine-modified mesoporous silica has been developed. The supported Fe(III)/SiO2 catalyst displayed excellent catalytic properties for the allylic oxidation of 3,5,5-trimethylcyclohex-3-en-1-one (β-IP, 1) to 3,5,5-trimethlycyclohex-2-ene-1,4-dione (KIP, 2) with molecular oxygen as the oxidant under mild conditions. It can also catalyze the oxidation of other olefins, such as α-pinene and cyclohexene and its derivatives efficiently and selectively. In addition, the supported catalyst can be easily recycled without significant loss of activity and selectivity, which is a green alternative for practical applications.

Abstract:The FeCl3 -catalyzed aerobic oxidation of ketones always gives rise to the α-C-C cleavage product, having challenges to afford hydroxyl keto compounds. Here we report an effective control of the main product from keto acid to α-hydroxyl ketone, by reducing the concentration of FeCl3 catalyst, together with the use of DMSO as the solvent. In addition, mechanistic investigations suggested the same FeCl3 -coordinated peroxide intermediate for both hydroxylation and C-C cleavage routes, and emphasize the role of DMSO as both ligand and reductant. This work provides a new approach for selective aerobic oxidation under Lewis acid catalysis.
Efficient and selective oxidation of secondary benzylic C H bonds to ketones with O2 catalyzed by metalloporphyrins under solvent-free and additive-free conditions

Abstract:Non-solvent and non-additive oxidation of secondary benzylic C–H bonds to aromatic ketones utilizing simple metalloporphyrins as catalysts and O2 was investigated systematically. Based on systematical studies on reaction parameters, such as the structures of porphyrins, the types of central metals, the amount of catalyst, the pressure of oxygen, and the temperature, most aromatics with secondary benzylic C–H had been converted efficiently and selectively to their corresponding aromatic ketones catalyzed by the optimized metalloporphyrin catalyst T(2,3,6-triCl)PPCo. And the selectivity towards aromatic ketones reached up to 80 %–95 % with acceptable conversions in lower catalyst-loading (2.4 × 10−3%, mol/mol). The highest selectivity was achieved for substrate 1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthalene with the selectivity of 95.0 % in the conversion of 46.3 %. The superior catalytic performance of T(2,3,6-triCl)PPCo could be mainly ascribed to its excellent plane structure, superior ability for electron transfer and low positive charge around the central metal. All of above properties promoted the formation of catalytic active species high-valence cobalt-oxo complexes, and facilitated the approach of substrates to the catalytic active centers. This work presented an optimized balance among higher selectivity, milder conditions, lower catalyst-loading, and simpler catalysts compared with current documents, which was not only an efficient, practical and significant strategy to functionalize the widely available aromatics possessing secondary benzylic CH with high efficiency and selectivity under milder conditions, but also an important instance in the effective functionalization and utilization of other CH bonds employing optimized catalytic systems based on metalloporphyrins.

Abstract:The dehydrogenation of abundant alkane feedstocks to olefins is one of the mostly intensively investigated reactions in organic catalysis. A long-standing, pervasive challenge in this transformation is the direct dehydrogenation of unactivated 1,1-disubstituted ethane, an aliphatic motif commonly found in organic molecules. Here, we report the design of a diphosphine chloroiridium catalyst for undirected dehydrogenation of this aliphatic class to form valuable 1,1-disubstituted ethylene. Featuring high site selectivity and excellent functional group compatibility, this catalytic system is applicable to late-stage dehydrogenation of complex bioactive molecules. Moreover, the system enables unprecedented dehydrogenation of polypropene with controllable degree of desaturation, dehydrogenating more than 10 in 100 propene units. Further derivatizations of the resulting double bonds afford functionalized polypropenes.
