Abstract:In the present study, performance of a biological reactor submerged with a hollow fiber membrane module was investigated for treating domestic wastewater. Five runs with hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 5 h, sludge retention times (SRTs) of 5, 10, 20, 40 and 80 d respectively, were conducted. The submerged membrane bioreactor process was capable of achieving over 90% removals both for COD and NH3-N on the average almost independent of SRT. The maximum COD and NH3-N loadings obtained in the study were 4.0 kg-COD m(-3) d(-1) and 0.18 kg-NH3-N m(-3) d(-1), respectively. Sludge concentration in the bioreactor increased with prolonged SRT. Sludge yield coefficient and endogenous coefficient was calculated as 0.25 kg-VSS kg-COD-1 and 0.04 d(-1), being similar to that of the conventional activated sludge process.
