Abstract:Objective To investigate the effects of glutamine (Glu) on the intestinal mucosal barrier function in starved rats. Methods Ninety male SD rats weighing 225-275 g were randomly into 3 groups:Ⅰnormal control group ( n = 10);Ⅱstarvation group drank water only ( n - 40) andⅢstarvation + Glu group( n = 40) received Glu 1.0 g·kg-1 by gastric feeding once a day from the first day of starvation. The animals were killed at 3,5,7 and 9 d of starvation and a short segment of ileum was taken about 5 cm from the caecum for microscopic examination and determination of NO, MDA and SOD level in the intestinal tissue using immuno-histochemical staining. Results Starvation resulted in damage to the mucous membrane, increase in apoptolic cells, NO and MDA content and decrease in SOD activity in groupⅡas compared with groupⅠ. Glu significantly attenuated the changes induced by starvation. Conclusion Glu can protect the intestinal mucosal barrier function from starvation-induced injury.
