Abstract:Based on a review of the main literature concerning the theory and practice of bibliotherapy,this paper analyzes the quality of the recommended books on literature.Through a briefing on the recommended literary works in Taiwan,Hong Kong and Mainland China,the paper shows the humanistic value and psychological effect of literature reading and suggests that literature reading should be promoted by cultivating readers' literary sense and making efforts to explore the psychological effect of great literary works.

Abstract:Bibliotherapy is an important part of art therapy and many publications regarding bibliotherapy have been published in the past. However, there has none about the scientometric study to systematically analyze the development and emerging research trends on bibliotherapy. Therefore, we performed a scientometric investigation to describe trends of this theme. All publications related to bibliotherapy published from 1980 to 2020 were identified and selected from Science Citation Index Expanded, Social Sciences Citation Index, and Arts & Humanities Citation Index of Web of Science Core Collection. VOSviewer was used to create collaborative network plots of countries, institutions, and authors and to perform cluster analysis of keywords. A total of 703 articles were searched, and we retrieved the 100 most cited articles published by 146 institutions from 15 countries in 57 academic journals. The United States occupied a leading position in the field of bibliotherapy and Linköping University was the most productive institution. Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology was the most productive journal. Andersson G, Carlbring P, and Cuijpers P may have an important influence on bibliotherapy research. The applications in depression, anxiety, panic disorder, insomnia, and aphasia are the hot themes. This scientometric review provided a comprehensive understanding of the bibliotherapy research using quantitative and qualitative methods, which can provide references for researchers in the bibliotherapy field. As investigators continue to work, we look forward to the development of bibliotherapy efficacy and the implementation form and steps.

Abstract:More and more new concepts and methods are surfacing thanks to integrated complementary medicine research. As many laws and new discoveries have been covered in the sea of existing literature, understanding research progress and following its direction has become difficult for researchers. This study investigates the global development of integrated complementary medicine research over the past ten years through bibliometric analysis to provide reference to researchers for future work. Searched and selected were articles in 22 integrated complementary medicine journals published globally in the Web of Science database. Analysis of the articles was based on changes of publication years, geographical distribution, research institutes, research fields and so on with multiple bibliometric analysis methods. Generally, the total amount of integrated complementary medicine research articles has increased. However, there was a slight decrease in the last two years. Research in China, US and South Korea has taken the dominant position. Integrated complementary medicine is the inevitable trend of the development of Chinese medicine and even world medicine. Traditional Chinese medicine should take in achievements of modern technology to make breakthroughs. Although research in the last two years declined compared with the peak time of 2013, integrated complementary medicine research will still flourish. There will be more and more research institutes and researchers involved in the near future.

Abstract:This semester-long study attempted to investigate 122 (M: 21; F: 101) Taiwanese undergraduates’ responses to bibliotherapy and two textbooks in an Advanced English Reading classroom. Data collection included an anonymous 6-point Likert scaled questionnaire with a space for free comments and the students’ reflection papers to show their perceptions. The results of the study showed that bibliotherapy effectively helped the students (a) understand the importance of self-knowledge, life growth, emotion management, positive thinking, and behavior awareness, (b) understand the importance of (literature) reading, (literature) reading course, and the benefits of (literature) reading, and (c) enhance self-understanding, positive thinking, mental growth, and (positive) behavioral change. Moreover, the study found that the two textbooks could effectively boost the students’ bibliotherapeutic energy, including their positive thinking ability, mental growth, and mature behavior.

Abstract:Since ancient times, books have been utilized as a therapeutic aid. However, its function and mode of operation have surely changed over time. It is the field of study that examines how writing might be used and how it might affect people's lives. Under the direction of a trained assistant, it is an act of interactive interplay between the reader's personality and the literature. People have various mental health issues, challenges, and difficulties in recent years. Bibliotherapy is a concept where, with the help of books, people manage their lives and their challenges. This study aims to see the efficacy of bibliotherapy in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and depression. Based on this experiment, researchers propose a conceptual framework for libraries. A book by Catherine M. Pittman titled "Rewire Your OCD Brain: Neuroscience-Based Skills to Break Free from Obsessive Thoughts and Fears" served as the primary data gathering tool for this research, which was carried out using an experimental methodology. The study's findings demonstrate a substantial difference between the experimental and wait-list groups in the treatment of mild to moderate OCD and depression symptoms with the application of bibliotherapy. Based on the findings, a conceptual framework with some recommendations has been suggested.

Abstract:Bibliotherapy represents the planned use of literary texts and devices to encourage awareness and processing of emotional, cognitive, and interpersonal problems in individuals with different types of psychosocial distress. As a part of expressive arts-therapies, it includes precisely formulated goals, basic stages, and methodology that are described in this paper. In addition, an overview of recent scientific research on this topic is provided in order to gain insights on the most commonly used approaches, methodologies, and outcomes obtained, as well as the effectiveness of bibliotherapy. Based on our evaluation, we concluded that the use of bibliotherapy is an appropriate complementary approach in educational settings, for children with special needs, as well as for maintaining mental health. Considering the limitations of bibliotherapy, we emphasise the need for further research with the aim of improving practical models and assessment tools. Bibliotherapy can be a promising part of a multimodal educational and rehabilitation approach that recognises the power of language arts, which simultaneously supports both realistic and transcendental aspects of human existence.

Abstract:The paper deciphers the Chinese literature to English speaking scholars and bridges the gap between China and the western countries on the topics of therapeutic landscapes and healing gardens. Three parts of contents are included in the paper. Firstly, four schools of theories explaining how and why nature can heal, are introduced based on the studies in western countries with the examination of terminology used. In the second part, 71 publications in Chinese are systematically reviewed, with 19 significant studies analyzed in details, including focus areas, the research method, and major findings. In the final part, Chinese studies are evaluated in relation to the theories in western countries.

Abstract:The United States is facing an epidemic of mental illness, affecting nearly 60 million Americans annually (http://www.nami.org/ ). The World Health Organization describes mental health as “a long neglected problem” and has established an action plan for 2013-2020 (http://www.who.int/mental_health/action_plan_2013/en/). One way to combat mental illness is through bibliotherapy, which is the use of written materials including fiction, nonfiction, and poetry to support emotional and psychiatric healing.Bibliotherapy has been in existence since ancient times, but began in earnest in the United States in the 1850’s during the “Great Awakening.” At that time, mental illness began to be seen as a medical condition rather than a supernatural phenomenon. Since then, due to the changing nature of our institutions, interest in bibliotherapy waned until the 1950’s when there was a slight resurgence in its practice. However, in the last 20 years, bibliotherapy has gained a stronghold in the United Kingdom. To relieve the stress of an overcrowded mental health system, public policy in the UK has supported the use of bibliotherapy in a variety of its institutions. There are many ways to conduct bibliotherapy, but studies show that when the process is interactive, such as in a support group setting, the results are better. Also, bibliotherapy can be conducted by many sorts of professionals, including doctors, therapists, social workers, teachers, and librarians. Studies also show that when the bibliotherapists are trained in the best practices of bibliotherapy, results improve. Bibliotherapy is an effective, low-cost alternative for people in need of therapeutic assistance. The UK model should be studied and implemented in the United States and in other nations to help solve the mental health crisis.

Abstract:This article presents the core ideas of bibliotherapy as an integrative psychotherapeutic channel, exploring the ways in which it integrates new meanings into psychotherapeutic modalities, concepts, and principles. The unique aspect of the bibliotherapeutic relationship is that it is based on a triangular mode of therapist-text-patient. It supplements this with the creative processes of reading, writing, and the development of the capacity to narrate. Bibliotherapy uses many of the same concepts as other psychotherapeutic treatments, such as transference, countertransference, potential space, and the capacity to play. The integration of various kinds of texts within the clinical context, such as children’s literature or adolescent poems and songs, makes bibliotherapy different. The text will be integrated according to the developmental stage of the patients. This article introduces the theoretical background of bibliotherapy and places bibliotherapy within the Winnicottian context and parent–child therapy. Examples of different clinical experiences within bibliotherapy are discussed.
Literary Prescriptions: Applying Bibliotherapy in a Psychotherapeutic Context

Abstract:Bibliotherapy, a relatively underutilized lifestyle intervention in psychotherapy, is a unique cost-effective avenue of treatment that empowers patients by integrating therapeutic reading into their treatment plan. This approach strategically uses empirically validated cognitive-behavioral and self-help literature to facilitate the application of therapeutic topics outside of psychotherapy sessions. Bibliotherapy's range of administration styles highlights its potential as an adjunct to medication, psychotherapy, and/or healthy lifestyle interventions in a comprehensive treatment plan. Most meta-analyses conducted so far regarding bibliotherapy in a clinical setting consist of studies that use minimal patient interaction via short phone calls or emails. Despite this, meta-analyses show medium-to-large effect sizes that are comparable to traditional psychotherapy modalities for common disorders, most notably depression. This article explores the practical implementation of bibliotherapy research via an example psychotherapy session with a patient who has a diagnosis of major depressive disorder (MDD). An evidence-based reading list is proposed alongside a decision tree and actionable clinical insights for the effective implementation of bibliotherapy.

Effects of Developmental Bibliotherapy on Subjective Well-Being of Older Adults Living in Nursing Homes: A Quasi-Experimental Study

Abstract:The current study sought to create a developmental bibliotherapy material database (DBMD) and examine the effectiveness of developmental bibliotherapy on subjective well-being of older adults living in nursing homes. Based on the reading needs of older adults, we developed a DBMD, which included 327 materials with five themes: Health Care, Current Affairs and Politics, Historical Biographies, Geriatric Culture, and Psychological Adjustment. Fifty-four single materials were randomly selected from the DBMD to perform the intervention. This study used a quasi-experimental, single-group pre-/post-survey approach. Sixty-four older adults participated in the study for 6 weeks. Immediately before and after the intervention, older adults completed the Optimism-Pessimism Scale and Memorial University of Newfoundland Scale of Happiness. There were significant improvements in older adults' optimistic tendency and subjective well-being (p < 0.05). Reading materials in the DBMD promoted older adults' optimistic attitude toward life, reduced negative emotions, and improved subjective well-being. The experience of international students in interactive bibliotherapy: functions of interactive bibliotherapy helping in environmental transitions

Abstract:The current research studied the possible functions of interactive bibliotherapy when implemented for international students. Four international students studying in a university in London participated in five interactive bibliotherapy sessions. Each participant underwent an interview after the sessions, and the contents were transcribed and analysed through a thematic analysis. A total of 4 main themes and 11 subthemes were extracted. It was shown that international students, who were having difficulty in accessing psychological aid, joined the interactive bibliotherapy sessions with relative ease. Sessions provided them a space where they could lay aside their normal routine, and freely express themselves. It was also a space whereby participants were able to become aware of their stress, and had the opportunity to do some retrospection on their selves, all the while gaining flexibility. Lastly, the current research presented a model of interactive bibliotherapy for international students.
Bibliotherapy in practice: a person-centred approach to using books for mental health and dementia in the community

Abstract:Bibliotherapy is the use of texts to provide support for people with mental and physical health problems. It is widely seen to have beneficial outcomes but there is still disagreement about how best to deliver bibliotherapy in practice. This article explores one method of delivering bibliotherapy which has evolved over the past 20 years in the North of England, the Kirklees approach. Using a multimethod qualitative research design including reflective observations, interviews and document analysis, the article examines how bibliotherapy has been delivered to people with mental health problems and dementia in a volunteer-led scheme. As an inherently flexible and adaptable approach, bibliotherapy in practice in Kirklees is best defined by its ethos, rather than a prescriptive list of its activities, as is the case for many alternative approaches to bibliotherapy. It is an approach to bibliotherapy which is person-centred; avoids value judgements of texts and responses to them; is often co-produced with group participants; is about making a contribution (in a variety of ways); and emphasises social connection. This separates it from other current models of bibliotherapy operating in the UK, and demonstrates how it may be tailored to the requirements of those experiencing diverse mental and physical health conditions. A more responsive form of bibliotherapy, as outlined here, has the potential to provide support across the community.

Abstract:The issues of mental health such as depression and anxiety create impact to the psychological, social and economic of society. Public libraries as a community center play a great role in taking actions toward mental health and well-being through bibliotherapy services. This study aims to describe the public libraries experienced in bibliotherapy and to determine the criteria of bibliotherapy services in public libraries. A systematic literature search of studies was carried out based on the PRISMA framework. The analysis of the literatures revealed a large variety of bibliotherapy framework and models – most of them are developed in country-specific and only applicable in western countries, others could be applied by public libraries across borders. The review makes clear that bibliotherapy services are importance in libraries and requires specific criteria for bibliotherapy development. It also clearly outlines the potential of bibliotherapy services in libraries as a method of improving mental health and well-being. The article raises important issues with regards to how public library should go about developing bibliotherapy services. This study contributes to the field of library and information management as it highlights the public libraries experienced in implementing bibliotherapy. Library practitioners could use the results to develop their strategies to ensure the success of the bibliotherapy as part of library services.

Abstract:Background: Comparative research on art therapy in education is limited, both in China and internationally. This study examines the potential of art therapy to transform art education, focusing on improving students' physical and mental health and aesthetic abilities, both in China and other countries. Aims: This study provides a comprehensive comparative analysis of art therapy in education within a visual context. Using bibliometric analysis of publications from the CNKI and WOS databases over the past 20 years, and the CiteSpace visualization tool, research hotspots and frontiers in art therapy within education were identified. Clustering research topics were explored, and the influence of art therapy on current art education was discussed. The study also predicts the future development trend of art therapy in both Chinese and international art education. Methods: Bibliometric analysis of CNKI and WOS databases, coupled with the CiteSpace visualization tool, facilitated the identification of key nodes in the keyword network, highlighting research hotspots and frontiers. Results: The development of art therapy has shown an upward trend over the past two decades, particularly in the last ten years. Comparative analysis revealed ongoing progress of art therapy in both China and other countries, with untapped potential in China. Future trends indicate a complex upward trajectory, emphasizing the integration of localized art therapy methods and educational approaches. Abstract:Recent developments in psychology have rekindled interest in the therapeutic potential of literature. Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, wherein many children lack access to conventional psychological assistance, bibliotherapy emerges as a viable aid for addressing personal issues. However, not all children's books are suitable for this purpose, necessitating meticulous scrutiny to ascertain suitable therapeutic reading materials. Through qualitative examination, this study scrutinized the affective bibliotherapy approach within fiction and illustrated books, unveiling three essential bibliotherapy attributes in children's literature. Comprehensive examples are offered for each feature, aiming to enrich future bibliotherapy research and application.

Abstract:The purpose of this study is to analyze research trends related to psychotherapy through picture books and to suggest directions for follow-up research. For this purpose, For this purpose, 35 papers published in domestic academic journals over the past 10 years were analyzed. Research results First, the research was conducted steadily from 2013 to 2022. Second, these studies were presented at 24 domestic conferences, with ‘Bibliotherapy Therapy’ (22.86%) being the most common. Third, the study subjects had the highest rate of children’s, followed by elementary school students and adults. Fourth, the type of research was qualitative research, quantitative research, and mixed research in order. Fifth, picture book-mediated activities included viewing, listening, reading, speaking, writing, making, and play/activities. In terms of psychology/counseling, they were effective in self-esteem, anger, anxiety, aggression, mourning and happiness. Based on the results of the study, it suggests that picture book-based psychotherapeutic interventions are needed in various psychological counseling settings.
