Abstract:Objective: To investigate gender differences in the craniofacial characteristics and growth of skeletal class Ⅲ malocclusion. Methods: Lateral cephalographs before treatment were taken in 154 patients with skeletal class Ⅲ disharmony.Cephalometric analysis was carried out.The results between sexes and two dentitions were compared by t-test.Results: Male subjects with skeletal class Ⅲ malocclusion present with significantly larger linear dimensions in the cranial base, maxilla, mandible, anterior facial heights, and posterior facial heights when compared with female subjects.Adult female subjects exhibited smaller Y axis than adult male subjects.Male subjects got a significant growth in posterior cranial base, mandible, and facial heights, especially in lower anterior facial height during the development.Female subjects exhibited increases in anterior cranial base, maxilla, mandible, lower anterior facial height, and posterior facial height.A relatively larger amount of protrusion of the mandible and aggravated disharmony appeared to be characteristics of female subjects. Conclusion: Skeletal class Ⅲ malocclusion is associated with significant degree of sexual dimorphism in craniofacial parameters and growth. It is essential to pay more attentions to the treatment plan and prognostic appraisal of skeletal class Ⅲ patients.
