Abstract:Microcapsules with an average diameter of 3.3 mm are obtained through the layer-by-layer (LbL) self-assembly technique by using MnCO3 microparticles with voids and pores as the template core. MnCO3 enriches the electrically neutral europium complex Eu(DBM)(3)Phen (DBM = dibenzoylmethane, Phen 1,10-phenanthroline) both in the shell and inside the microcapsules. About 6 times more intense fluorescence emission is thus observed for microcapsules from MnCO3 compared to those obtained from a melamine formaldehyde (MF) core. The microcapsules exhibit two characteristic fluorescence peaks of the europium complexes at 596 and 612 nm, the latter sharp peak encompasses high monochromaticity. The assembly of fluorescence-enhanced microcapsules with Eu(DBM)(3)Phen show a new concept to enrich functional molecules by the LbL technique and has application potential in simultaneous multicolor bioassays.
Micelles As "fluorescence Protector" for an Europium Complex in Microcapsules

Abstract:Microcapsules with excellent fluorescence enhancement are assembled by using cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) micelles to enrich Eu(DBM)(3)Phen (DBM and Phen are dibenzoylmethane and 1,10-phenanthroline, respectively) on CaCO(3) particles by the LbL technique. Compared to microcapsules without micelles, the fluorescence intensity of microcapsules with micelles increases 9 times, larger than the 6 times increase of absorbance. This unexpected fluorescence enhancement is attributed to the "fluorescence protector" effect of CTAB micelles in microcapsules. Energy loss from nonradiative deactivation through energy transfer to high-energy O-H vibrations from the emissive (5)D(0) state of Eu(III) is greatly prohibited. The new strategy using micelles in this work not only enriches europium complexes during assembly in aqueous solution but also yields a fluorescence enhancement ratio larger than the enrichment ratio.

Abstract:Blue phase liquid crystals (BPLCs) self-assembling into soft cubic crystalline structures possess significant applications in the field of dynamic photoelectron spectroscopy. However, three scientific challenges limit their broader application, namely, the difficulty to form a free-standing structure due to fluidity, dependence on nanoparticles or polymer matrix to widen the BP temperature range, and high working voltages to reorientate the LCMs. Herein, we proposed a new concept of free-standing BPLC microcapsules (BPLCMs) prepared by microfluidic emulsification and interfacial polymerization. The temperature range of BPLCs could be widened by surface anchoring and physical confinement. The BPLCMs built a color library in the visible region in the thermal response process. Most importantly, the stable BPLCMs exhibited a reversible surface-switch mode driven by an electric field lower than 0.55 V mu m(-1), which was the lowest record for BPLCs. The BPLCMs demonstrate intriguing prospects in the fields of smart display and reversible sensors.

Abstract:This review addresses luminescent rare earth compounds assembled in microcapsules as well as in planar films fabricated by the layer-by-layer (LbL) technique, the Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) method and in self-assembled monolayers. Chemical precipitation, electrostatic, van der Waals interactions and covalent bonds are involved in the assembly of these compounds. Self-organized ring patterns of rare earth complexes in Langmuir monolayers and on planar surfaces with stripe patterns, as well as fluorescence enhancement due to donor-acceptor pairs, microcavities, enrichment of rare earth compounds, and shell protection against water are described. Recent information on the tuning of luminescence intensity and multicolors by the excitation wavelength and the ratio of rare earth ions, respectively, are also reviewed. Potential applications of luminescent rare earth complex assemblies serving as biological probes, temperature and gas sensors are pointed out.

Abstract:Fluorescent microcapsules doped with europium β-diketone complex were previously fabricated by stepwise adsorption of polyelectrolytes and europium complex using the layer-by-layer (LbL) technique [Chem. Commun. (2007) 1547–1549]. In this work, the influence of thermal treatment on the morphology of rare earth-doped microcapsules was studied by atomic force microscopy (AFM). Remarkable shrinking, increase of wall thickness and decrease of surface roughness were observed after heating the rare earth-doped microcapsules until 70°C for 30min. Intense red light emission at 612.0nm of the microcapsules could be clearly observed by bare eyes after thermal treatment. Diameter variation of the luminescent microcapsules induced by annealing is attributed to the molecular rearrangement of polyelectrolytes. Study on the fluorescent microcapsules with various sizes provides guidance in potential application as biological assay reagents or display elements.

Abstract:Fluorescent microcapsules based on coordination supramolecular polymers of rare earth metal ions were prepared via a layer-by-layer technique that used electrostatic interaction. The holes in the capsule walls were very small, which reduced leakage of small molecular payloads. The capsules remained intact at salt concentrations as high as 500 mmol . L-1, which shows they have potential in practical applications. Multicolored capsules were obtained simply using a mixture of terbium and europium ions.

Abstract:Fluorescent microcapsules doped with a europium beta-diketonate complex were fabricated for the first time by stepwise adsorption of polyelectrolytes and europium complex using the layer-by-layer technique. The influence of temperature and solvent treatment on the morphology of the microcapsules was investigated. Intense red light emission of the microcapsules could be clearly observed by fluorescence microscopy before and after treatment. Remarkable shrinking, decrease of the inner volume and increase of the wall thickness were observed using atomic force microscopy (AFM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) after thermal treatment. The shrinkage induced by annealing could be recovered by dissolving in ethanol solution, which was confirmed by AFM and TEM. Morphology variation of the luminescent microcapsules induced by annealing or solvent are both attributed to the molecular rearrangement of polyelectrolytes. While the shrinkage by annealing is an entropy driven process with formation of more coiled conformations of polyelectrolytes the morphology variation by ethanol might be due to the effective screening of electrostatic interaction within the polyelectrolyte multilayers and the changed interaction between hydrophobic fragments present in the polyelectrolytes.

Abstract:Rare earth-based polystyrene (PS) fluorescent microspheres, which vigorously combine the merits of rare earth elements and polystyrene microspheres, hold great potential for applications in the state-of-the-art technology and tremendous efforts have been devoted to the photoluminescence field. Herein, a 5-acrylamido-1,10-phenanthroline (Aphen) and Eu(III)-based polystyrene fluorescent microsphere was developed via a facial copolymerization strategy. The optimal complexes of Eu(beta- NTA)3(Aphen) and Eu(BFA)3(TPPO)2 were fabricated as the luminescent materials. Specifically, Eu(beta-NTA)3(Aphen)-PS was modified for the first time to enhance the photoluminescence property, which effectively integrated the Aphen with styrene monomer. Meanwhile, Eu(BFA)3(TPPO)2 was encapsulated into PS microspheres for the realization of Eu(BFA)3(TPPO)2-PS via an ubiquitous embedding process. The fluorescent intensity of Eu(beta-NTA)3(Aphen)-PS was notably reinforced along with an increasing concentration of the rare earth complexes. However, the fluorescence intensity of Eu(BFA)3(TPPO)2-PS was decreased when the concentration was 50 mg due to the saturated solubility of the complexes. The obtained copolymerization fluorescent microspheres could prevent the premature leakage of the fluorescent complexes in a natural environment and showed an outstanding photoluminescence efficiency.

Abstract:CdS–polyelectrolyte (CdS–PE) clusters were synthesized by using polyelectrolyte as the stabilizing agent in the aqueous solution. The blue shift of UV–Vis and Fluorescent spectra, the TEM images show the formation of nanoparticles within the polyelectrolyte chains. Using the normal polyelectrolyte hollow capsules as template, the CdS–PE clusters as functional layer materials, the uniform organic–inorganic hollow microspheres have been produced by layer-by-layer (LbL) self-assembly technology.

Abstract:The enhanced fluorescence of Eu(DBM)3Phen(DBM: dibenzoylmethide; Phen: phenanthroline) by Tb(DBM)3Phen in a poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) has been studied. A combinatorial methodology was adopted to allow rapid optimization of the fluorescence enhancement conditions of thin-film samples in arrays of microwells. Based on Eu(DBM)3Phen doped PMMA, three material libraries were generated in order to compare the effects of species identity and Tb(DBM)3Phen content to the effect of other complexes containing enhancing ions (La3+, Gd3+, Dy3+, Y3+, Ce3+) on the luminescence efficiency of the Eu3+ complex in PMMA. The fluorescence enhancement of Eu(DBM)3Phen in PMMA is considered to originate from intramolecular and intermolecular energy transfer processes.

Abstract:Using rare earth complexes with electron-transporting properties as host materials, and 4-(dicyanomethylene)-2-t-butyl-6(1,1,7,7-tetramethyljulolidyl-9-enyl)-4H-pyran (DCJTB) as a dopant, bilayer doped electroluminescent (EL) devices with efficient red light emission were fabricated. When a europium complex was adopted, the EL spectrum consisted of emissions from DCJTB and Eu3+ ions. At optimal dopant concentration, an EL efficiency of 5.7 cd/A at 0.04 mA/cm2 was observed. Although the EL efficiency decreased with an increase in current density, it remained higher than 2.0 cd/A with brightness of 347.0 cd/m2 at 5.7 V bias. DCJTB and Eu3+ ions collected the energy of singlet and triplet excitons, respectively, and then gave rise to pure red color emission, suggesting a promising way by which to utilize both singlet and triplet excited states in EL devices.

Abstract:Europium complex nanoclusters were encapsulated inside silica colloidal spheres by a wet-chemical method. The hybrid spheres were characterized to possess a core-shell structure by transmission electron microscopy. The spheres present strong characteristic emissions of Eu3+ ions, and the fluorescence decay time decreases when the spheres are dispersed in two dielectric polymers. Temperature-dependent decay dynamics indicates that europium complex in sphere-polymer systems display higher spontaneous emission rate compared with free hybrid spheres in air. Our results are suggestive for optimizing the luminescence quantum yield of lanthanide complexes, and also provide a promising probe to investigate modified spontaneous emission in photonic crystals.
Facile Fabrication of Novel Eu‐containing Copolymer and Luminescent Properties

Abstract:A new Eu-containing copolymer was successfully fabricated through two steps. First, the Eu-containing monomer was synthesized from 4-Vinylbenzoic acid and europium ion (Eu3+) complex, which rare-earth ions connect with the ligand by covalent bands. Next, the copolymer was obtained by free-radical copolymerization of Eu-containing monomer with methyl methacrylate using 2, 2'-azobis(isobutyronitrile) (AIBN) as initiator at low temperature. Infrared spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography and scanning electron microscopy were applied to characterize the structure of the polymer. UV-visible absorption/photoluminescence spectra and fluorescence spectra were taken to valuate the photophysical properties of the obtained Eu-containing copolymer. The experimental result shows that the strong luminescence of europium ions substantiates optimum energy match and effective intramolecular energy transfer between the triplet state energy of coordination complex and the emissive energy level of the rare-earth ions. A study of the dependence of emission intensities of the Eu-containing nanoparticles on the Eu content showed that the emission intensities increased nearly linearly with increasing Eu content. In addition, no significant emission concentration quenching phenomenon was observed at the Eu content of 0-4.61 mol%. Abstract:In this paper, we describe the fabrication of photoluminescent films containing rare earth complex nanoparticles on both planar and spherical supports by using the layer-by-layer (LBL) self-assembly technique. The rare earth complex nanoparticles are synthesized in aqueous solution, with trivalent europium as the metal center ion, dibenzoylmethane (DBM) as the ligand and poly(ethylenimine) (PEI) as the stabilizing agent. The particle size is about 2nm as revealed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images. During the formation of Eu(DBM)3 nanoparticles, PEI stabilize the nanoparticles and confer a well-defined positive surface, thus preventing the nanoparticles from aggregation and affording stable dispersion. These nanoparticles can be assembled to form ultrathin films by alternate deposition with poly(sodium 4-styrene sulfonate) (PSS) on planar supports. The resulting films show the same UV and fluorescence characteristics as the corresponding aqueous nanoparticle dispersion, which indicates that the deposition process is successful. In addition, atomic force microscopy (AFM) and TEM have been used to characterize the surface morphology of these films. Aggregations in the size range of 30–70nm are found in the composite films. A strong and narrow emission peak at 612nm can be found in the photoluminescence (PL) spectra of the LBL films, which is the characteristic emission of Eu3+. We have also extended the substrate of LBL assembly to microspherical surface, and obtained composite fluorescent shells on silica microspheres.
Europium-complex-grafted Polymer Dots for Amplified Quenching and Cellular Imaging Applications.

Abstract:We report on a europium-complex-grafted polymer for preparing stable nanoparticle probes with high luminescence brightness, narrow emission bandwidth, and long luminescence lifetimes. A Eu complex bearing an amino group was used to react with a functional copolymer poly(styrene-co-maleic anhydride) by the spontaneous amidation reaction, producing the polymer grafted with Eu complexes in the side chains. The Eu-complex-grafted polymer was further used to prepare Eu-complex-grafted polymer dots (Pdots) and Eu-complex-blended poly(9-vinylcarbazole) composite Pdots, which showed improved colloidal stability as compared to those directly doped with Eu-complex molecules. Both types of Pdots can be efficiently quenched by a nile blue dye, exhibiting much lower detection limit and higher quenching sensitivity as compared to free Eu-complex molecules. Steady-state spectroscopy and time-resolved decay dynamics suggest the quenching mechanism is via efficient fluorescence resonance energy transfer from the Eu complex inside a Pdot to surface dye molecules. The amplified quenching in Eu-complex Pdots, together with efficient cell uptake and specific cell surface labeling observed in mammalian cells, suggests their potential applications in time-resolved bioassays and cellular imaging.

Abstract:Exploration of plasmonic structures to enhance upconversion luminescence (UCL) attracts attention because faint UCL from a material is a bottleneck for its applications. We designed and prepared three easily realized structures to improve the UCL of β -NaYF 4 :Yb 3 , Er 3+ micropillar (MP), and compared them to a reference structure on glass on single particles. We achieved a 43-fold UCL enhancement with the MPs with an Ag cap.The experimental results and simulations indicated that the improvements in excitation field and radiation direction collectively enhanced the MP UCL. We validated the captured radiation patterns generated from various structures by excitation simulations and provide a rational criterion for cavity design.

Abstract:Surfactant dodecyl(11-(methacryloyloxy)undecyl)dimethylammonium bromide (DMDA) is utilized as the chemical linkage to assemble multi-component photofunctional hybrids. Europium (III) tetrakis (beta-diketonate) complexes (beta-diketonate (L) = 2-thenoyltrifluoroacetonate (TTA), 4,4,4-trifluoro-1-phenyl-1,3-butanedionate (BTA), trifluoroacetylacetonate (TAA)) are connected with DMDA via anion exchange reaction to form Eu(L)(4)DMDA. Then Eu(TTA)(4)DMDA system is encapsulated into (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane functionalized MCM-41 host, resulting in MCM-41(m)-Eu(L)(4)DMDA assembly. At the same time, methacrylic-group-modified ZnO nanoparticles (designated ZnO-MAA) are prepared through sol-gel reaction between zinc methacrylate and LiOH. Finally ZnO-MAA and MCM-41(m)-Eu(L)(4)DMDA are covalently bonded together with copolymerization reaction between MAA and DMDA units at the presence of benzoyl peroxide (BPO). The detailed physical characterization and especially the photoluminescence of these hybrid materials are studied in detail. Besides the uniformity is kept in the mesostructure, the characteristic emission of both Eu3+ complex system and modified ZnO unit are obtained. It is interesting that the white luminescence is obtained for MCM-41(m)-Eu(TAA)(4)DMDA-ZnO by the emission integration of ZnO unit and Eu3+. Abstract:Several devices using a europium complex Eu(TTA)3(DPPz)(TTA=2-thenoyltrifluoroacetonate, DPPz=dipyrido[3,2-a:2′,3′-c]phenazine) as dopant emitter were fabricated. The performances of these devices are among the best reported for devices incorporating a europium complex as a red emitter. One such device with structure TPD (50 nm)/Eu:CBP (4.5%, 30 nm)/BCP (30 nm)/Alq (25 nm) exhibits an external quantum efficiency 2.1%, current efficiency 4.4 cd/A, power efficiency 2.1 lm/W, and brightness 1670 cd/m2.
Study of sensitized luminescence of rare earths. Fluorescence enhancement of the europium—terbium (or lutetium)—β-diketone—synergistic agent complex system and its application

Abstract:Study of the enhancement effect on the fluorescence intensities of the Eu3+-thenoyltrifluoroacetone(TTA)-cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CMAB) system by Tb3+ and of the Eu3+-dibenzoylmethane(DBM)—diethylamine(DEA) system by Lu3+ has been carried out in a colloidal suspension. In the presence of terbium or lutetium the fluorescence intensities of the above systems were enhanced by a factor of about 100 at a pH from 5.5 to 8.0 and 9.5 to 11.5, respectively. The excitation wavelength was 372nm for the Eu-TTA-CTMAB system and 390nm for Eu-DBM-DEA system. The emission wavelength was 612 nm. Fluorescence intensity was a linear function of the concentration of europium in the range 1.0 × 10−12-1.0 × 10−8 mol dm−3 for the Eu-TTA-CTMAB system and 5.0 × 10−11-1.0 × 10−7 mol dm−3 for the Eu-DBM-DEA system, respectively. The detection limit was 1.0 × 10−13 mol dm−3 for the Eu-TTA-CTMAB system and 5.0 × 10−12 mol dm−3 for the Eu-DBM-DEA system. The standard addition method was used for the determination of europium in rare earth oxides and gave satisfactory results.
