Abstract:Silicon space solar cells act as the main power of space equipments, and it is developed towards the thickness between 50～70 microns and wonderful prospects is shown before us. The super-thin solar cells desire higher mechanism strength, conversion rate and better irradiation performance. A review is given of the progress in research on the dopants, passivation and textures. Possible solutions are also talked about in this paper.

Abstract:ABSTRACTAn all‐Si tandem solar cell has the potential to achieve high conversion efficiency at low cost. However, the selection and synthesis of candidate material remain challenging. In this work, we show that the conventional ‘Si quantum dots (Si QDs) in SiO2 matrix’ approach can lead to the formation of over‐sized Si nanocrystals especially when doped with phosphorous, making the size‐dependent quantum confinement less effective. Also, our investigation has shown that the high resistivity of this material has become the performance bottleneck of the solar cell. To resolve these matters, we propose a new design based on Si QDs embedded in a SiO2/Si3N4 hybrid matrix. By replacing the SiO2 tunnel barriers by the Si3N4 layers, the new material manages to constrain the growth of doped Si QDs effectively and enhances the apparent band gap, as shown in X‐ray diffraction, Raman, photoluminescence and optical spectroscopic measurements. Besides, electrical characterisation on Si QD/c‐Si heterointerface test structures indicates the new material possesses improved vertical carrier transport properties. Abstract:According to its crystal configuration,silicon materials for polar cell can be classified in monocrystalline silicon,multicrystalline silicon and amorphous silicon.The characteristics,history and present research status of three kinds of silicon materials were reviewed,and the related problems and future development were described.Three kinds of silicon materials possess their merits and dismerits as well as different applied field,and they would be developed with the development of silicon processing technology.It can be concluded that the multicrystalline silicon,silicon ribbon and thin film silicon will be dominant in PV market in the future owing to their high cost-performance ratios.

Abstract:Both the first generation crystalline Si and the second generation non-crystalline Si thin film solar cells dominate the current photovoltaic(PV)industry.The third generation nanotechnology approaches aim to decrease costs to well below 1.0 USD/W level of second generation PVs to 0.5 USD/W,potentially to 0.2 USD/W or better,by significantly increasing efficiencies but maintaining the economic and environmental cost advantages of thin-film deposition techniques.In this paper,we present a brief review on the recent achievements in Si nanocrystalline and nanowire solar cells as the future PV industry may belong to these nanostructured Si solar cells.The emphasis is on hydrogenated nanocrystalline silicon(nc-Si:H)tandem thin film solar cells with the band gap tuned by the dot size,the preliminary application of Si nanowire arrays in planar Si solar cells and radial Si solar cell concept including single nanowire Si solar cells,and multiple exciton generation nc-Si:H hot carrier solar cells.

Abstract:Silicon (Si)-based solar cells constitute about 90% of the photovoltaic (PV) market, and a drastic reduction in module cost and significant improvement in PV performance have been observed since its first inception in 1941. This article aims to present the comprehensive review of prominent advancements enacted in Si solar cells after the year 2000. Monocrystalline Si solar cell has been the matured technology with the record efficiency (η) of 26.6% achieved so far. As the drive to push η around 30% Schokley–Quiesser limit is foreseeable in the near future, PV community is actively striving to fabricate efficient yet cost-effective devices. Polycrystalline Si solar cells contain small-sized grains, and efforts are underway to enhance the η beyond 21.9% by controlling the recombination at grain boundaries, optimising the passivated interfaces and deposition process. Thin-film amorphous Si technology proffers low-cost fabrication process and η of 13.6% has been recorded for a multijunction solar cell. Employment of sophisticated nanowire-based light trapping schemes and dopant-free carrier-selective layers along with the development of hybrid solar cells of organic and Si materials are among the emerging research trends for Si solar cells.

Abstract:Silicon nanocrystals(Si NCs) are of great importance for the improvement of solar cell performance due to their remarkable electronic and optical properties.There are a variety of approaches to use Si NCs for solar cells.Si NC films,Si NCs embedded in organic(P3HT) or inorganic(SiOx、SiNx or SiCx) matrices,Si NCs coupled with carbon nanostructures(C60 or single-walled carbon nanotubes) have been employed in the preparation of solar cells.The coupling of Si NCs with conventional solar cells such as dye-sensitized solar cells and Si-wafer-based solar cells has also been demonstrated.The exploration of Si NCs in the structures of novel multiple exciton solar cells,hot carrier solar cells and intermediate band solar cells has been started.

Abstract:Photovoltaic technology is a technology that uses the photoelectric conversion properties of semiconductor materials to convert solar energy into electricity. Photovoltaic technology is a kind of renewable energy technology that does not produce pollution and greenhouse gas emissions and has many application prospects. According to data, from 1985 to 2017, the cumulative total installed photovoltaic capacity globally exceeded 400 GW and is expected to grow in the next few years. Photovoltaic technology has become an essential part of renewable energy worldwide. Photovoltaic cells are the core equipment of photovoltaic technology. There are mainly monocrystalline silicon, polysilicon, amorphous silicon, organic solar cells, and other types. Among them, monocrystalline silicon photovoltaic cells have high photoelectric conversion efficiency, but high cost, mainly used in high-end applications; Polysilicon photovoltaic cells are cost-effective and used primarily in large-scale photovoltaic power station construction; Photovoltaic technology can also be used in mobile chargers, solar streetlights, solar pumps, and other aspects. In addition, photovoltaic technology also has a wide range of application prospects in urban rail transit, automobiles, robots, and other fields also appear. Although photovoltaic technology has many advantages, there are still some problems, such as panel cost, reliability, stability, and storage of photovoltaic power generation. Solving these problems requires continuous upgrading and development of technology. With the progress of technology and the support of policies, it is believed that photovoltaic technology will continue to develop and make more significant contributions to global energy transformation and sustainable development.

Abstract:The problems of worldwide energy shortage and environment pollution are becoming more and more serious, thus lots of attention has been paid to renewable and sustainable energy. The development of photovoltaic technology was rapid in recent years as one of the promising renewable energy, the worldwide total amount of photovoltaic power plants had reached nearly 100 GW in 2012, and about 90% of the worldwide solar cells are crystalline silicon solar cells. But there is still a large gap between the electricity costs of photovoltaic and traditional fossil energy, lots of methods have been tried to decrease the costs. The efficiency of the cell could be increased by concentration, and parts of the solar cells are replaced by cheaper optical elements in concentration photovoltaic, thus the costs of photovoltaic could be decreased by concentration. The traditional solar cells used for concentration were III-V multi-junction solar cells, their costs were high although they had high efficiency, thus people tried to use cheaper silicon solar cells for concentration to decrease the costs further. In this work, six kinds of silicon solar cells with different structures used for concentration were summarized; the device structures, manufacturing processes and efficiencies of the cells were compared. The prospects of concentrator silicon solar cells were predicted, the Si HIT cell using back contact structure, the multi-junction cell containing Si back contact cell and the Si VMJ cell used with Ge and GaP VMJ cells were considered to have good potential in low, middle, high and very high concentration photovoltaic (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:We have demonstrated the seed-assisted cast quasi-single crystalline (QSC) silicon technique to achieve high efficiency solar cells with low cost. Compared to multicrystalline (mc) silicon, the QSC silicon has better material properties, having higher minority carrier lifetime and fewer grain boundaries and dislocations. Furthermore, the 〈100〉 oriented QSC silicon can achieve a lower surface reflectance using alkaline texturing. Based on these two factors, the efficiency of the QSC silicon solar cells with the industrial size has been improved by up to 1% absolutely from the mc-Si counterparts. Compared to the Czochralski (CZ) silicon solar cells, the QSC cells have slightly lower efficiency but high productivity and negligible light-induced degradation. These results suggest a great potential of the QSC silicon applied in photovoltaic industry as the next generation substrate. To make the QSC silicon more competitive in industry, further efforts should be focused on the recycling of seed crystals, the coverage of mono-region and the control of structural defects.

Abstract:Photovoltaic devices have attracted enormous attention in recent decades. Except for silicon, a traditional photovoltaic material, a lot of new technologies have emerged for a reduction in costs and application in flexible devices. To present a relatively comprehensive view of such devices, this paper summarized the newest researches and challenges faced by different materials respectively. To be more specific, the general working principles of photovoltaic devices are explained initially and then the development of several typical solar cells are introduced, including silicon, Copper indium gallium selenide (CIGS), organic, and perovskite cells, followed by a brief introduction of their fabrication processes. This paper aims to help with advances in manufacturing methods or device structures to improve solar cell efficiency through the analysis of the progress in the corresponding fields.

Abstract:Considering the terawatt global demand for energy, studies on renewable energy resources are regarded as one of the most important issues. Among the available renewable energy resources, solar energy is a strong candidate because of its abundance and clean nature. Traditional solar cells are typically not cost effective for large-scale implementation given the high processing costs. Solution-processible solar cells have been of great interest among researchers over the past few decades in an effort to lower the costs of solar technologies because they are more affordable than conventional solar technologies. In this review, we provide an overview of the major solution-processible thin-film solar cell technologies by focusing on three representative fields: polymeric organic, inorganic chalcogenide, and organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite solar cells. This review describes the historical development, material properties, device structures, and highest performance of each technology under a single-junction configuration. In addition, the challenges of each technology and the future outlook are briefly discussed.

Abstract:The research progress of amorphous silicon thin film solar cells was describes.Metal surface plasma characteristics of micro/nano-optical structures and micro/nano-structures used in amorphous silicon thin-film solar cells can greatly reduce the thickness of thin film and photoelectric conversion efficiency.Overlapping tandem amorphous silicon solar cells,and amorphous silicon and polysilicon,Mono-crystalline silicon HIT(Hetero-junction with Intrinsic Thin Layer)structures can increase broadband solar spectral absorption range,and improve the photoelectric conversion efficiency.These are amorphous silicon thin-film solar cells development.

Abstract:Owing to the rapid increase of world population and the energy used by per person,the total elec?tricity consuming is growing even more quickly in modern society than before. Among various green energy technologies,photovoltaic power generation is undoubtedly a very promising technology. Although the tradi?tional silicon-based solar cells have made great progress,there is still a gap of the cost performance between silicon photovoltaics and the traditional energy. Therefore,it is urgent to develop low-cost and high-efficiency solar cells. However,the application of new-type solar cells has been double tested by poor stability and rela?tively low efficiency. Interestingly,elemental two-dimensional(2D)materials and their derivatives have also attracted much attention due to their excellent chemical and physical properties. The integration of elemental 2D materials into solar cells has also been widely studied and the positive effects can be obviously observed . In this review,we show the development of nanoscale elemental 2D materials served as transport layers in solar cells,which have gained prominence improvement in terms of efficiency and been proved to be a new platform for further promising technology to meet the energy demands in modern society. Then the critical challenges and prospects for using of elemental 2D materials in solar cells are addressed.

Abstract:Solar cells fabricated with the most dominant material in industry, silicon (Si), developed rapidly in the recent years. Traditional Si solar cells require a complex process of fabricating junction. Thanks to its exotic electrical and optical properties, graphene (Gr) has attracted tremendous research interest in optoelectronic device applications, e.g., solar cells. The Gr/Si solar cell can be achieved by a simple room‐temperature transfer technique, which exhibits great potential application in photovoltaics. Currently, many researchers focus on the strategies to dope the Gr for the cell efficiency improvement, from 1.65% to 16.2%. Although great progress has been made, there are still some key issues to be solved on the way to the commercialization of Gr/Si solar cells. Here, the recent progress in the development of Gr/Si solar cells is comprehensively reviewed, and the road map of Gr/Si solar cell techniques in the future is discussed.

Abstract:Silicon quantum dots (Si QDs) are usually smaller than 10 nm. They have drawn much attention from researchers because of their novel electronic and optical properties caused by quantum confinement effect and surface effect, which are different from those of bulk silicon materials. In recent years, Si QDs have been applied in the field of optoelectronics because of their novel electronic and optical properties, and a series of research progress have been achieved. The electronic and optical properties of Si QDs are overviewed. The use of Si QDs in optoelectronic devices such as light-emitting diodes, solar cells and photodetectors is introduced in detail. The performance of different types of Si QDs in optoelectronic devices is analyzed as well. It is believed that if continuous efforts in the research on Si QDs are made, Si QDs will play a crucial role in the innovation of optoelectronic devices in the future.

Abstract:Renewable energy has become an auspicious alternative to fossil fuel resources due to its sustainability and renewability. In this respect, Photovoltaics (PV) technology is one of the essential technologies. Today, more than 90 % of the global PV market relies on crystalline silicon (c-Si)-based solar cells. This article reviews the dynamic field of Si-based solar cells from high-cost crystalline to low-cost cells and investigates how to preserve high possible efficiencies while decreasing the cost. First, we discuss the various types of c-Si solar cells with different device architectures and report recent developments. Next, thin-film solar cells with their recent advancements are given. Then, Si nanowires solar cells and their recent results are discussed. Finally, we present the most encouraging tendencies in achieving low-cost solar cells utilizing cheap materials like heavily doped silicon wafers.
