Abstract:The process of formation and the chemical instability of Ba2Fe22+Fe283+O46 were studied by magnetic and X-ray analyses. The magnetic properties, resistivity and Mössbauer spectra were measured. A compound with X structure was also obtained by firing 12yGd2O3 + (1 - y)BaO + 6Fe2O3(y ≤ 0.15) at 1400°C in air. It was found that the uniaxial anisotropy constant K1 increased with y at 293 K.

Abstract:In order to study the effect of subsitution of Ba2+ ion by La3+ ion without inducing Fe2+ ion, the hexagonal ferrites LaxBa(1-x)Fe(12-x)ZnxO19 were prepared by oxalate coprecipitation method. The ferrites with magnetoplumbite structure were found in specimens with x < 0.8. The specific magnetization increases with increasing x, but the Curie temperature and magnetic crystal anisotropy constant, K1 decrease. The X, W phases existed in the phase region of high temperature were discussed.

Abstract:Ba4Sm2FexTi4-2xNb6+xO30 (x = 0, 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2) ceramics were prepared by standard solid-state reaction, and the filled tungsten bronze phase with space group P4bm was confirmed for all compositions. Systematic investigation of the Fe-substitution effects on dielectric, ferroelectric as well as magnetic properties was conducted. As the value of x increased, the Curie temperature (T-c) shifted from 562 K to 411 K, which was consistent with the DSC results. The coercive field (E-c) also decreased monotonously from 90 kV/cm (x = 0) to 20 kV/cm (x = 2), suggesting that the substitution of Fe promoted the ferroelectric domain switching. Compared with Ba4Sm2Ti4Nb6O30 (x = 0), simultaneously enhanced ferroelectric and magnetic properties were realized for x = 1, 1.5 and 2. Abstract:La-Sr co-doped Ba1−x(La0.5Sr0.5)xCo2Fe16O27 (x = 0.0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8 and 1.0, respectively) hexaferrites were prepared by the solid-state method. W-type hexaferrite single phase structure with space group P63/mmc was obtained when the doping amount was x < 0.4 and an M-type hexaferrite and a spinel phase with smaller grains gradually replaced the W phase as the primary phases when x ≥ 0.6. The maximum Ms is 76.2 emu/g and the minimum Hc is 60 Oe at x = 0.4, as obtained by VSM analysis. The magnetoelectric properties of the samples were tested at 1–18 GHz with a vector network analyzer and the reflection loss was calculated based on transmission line theory. It was found that the introduction of an appropriate amount of La-Sr provides a large number of porosity defects while increasing the grain size, which can effectively improve the reflection of electromagnetic waves inside the material and dissipate more energy. At the same time, co-doping also makes the resonance frequency of the samples shift to lower frequency, resulting in tunable absorption properties in the C, X and Ku bands. When x = 0.2, the minimum reflection loss is −40.61 dB at 1.5 mm thickness, with the effective absorption bandwidth of 5.76 GHz in the X band; when x = 0.4, the minimum reflection loss is −37.45 dB at 2.5 mm, with the bandwidth of 4.97 GHz in the C band; when x = 0.6, the material has good absorption in both the X and Ku bands with the thickness less than 2 mm. The simple preparation method and good performance make La-Sr co-doped Co2W ferrite a promising microwave absorbing material.

Abstract:Effects of Eu-substitution on the crystal structure, dielectric, ferroelectric, and magnetic properties have been systematically studied for Ba-4(EuxLa1-x)(2)Fe2Nb8O30 (x=0, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, 0.9, 0.95, 1) tungsten bronze ceramics. The tetragonal bronze structure is confirmed in all compositions. With the increase of x, Ba-4(EuxLa1-x)(2)Fe2Nb8O30 ceramics transform from paraelectric to ferroelectric. The compositions of x=0.9, 0.95, and 1 show first-order ferroelectric phase transitions above room temperature (391K for x=0.9, 404K for x=0.95, and 425K for x=1). The ferroelectric behavior is associated with a commensurate octahedral tilting, which is caused by large A2-A1 ionic-radius difference. Magnetic hysteresis loops for all compositions at room temperature have been obtained, which could be ascribed to both the secondary phase and tungsten bronze structure per se. It is confirmed that the radius difference between A2 and A1 cations plays a critical role on the structure, dielectric, and ferroelectric characteristics.
Magnetoelectric effect in Sm-substituted tungsten bronze structure Ba4(Sm La1-)2Fe2Nb8O30 ceramics

Abstract:Magnetoelectric effect is directly measured in the Ba4(SmxLa1-x)2Fe2Nb8O30 ceramics, which is rarely reported in tungsten bronze ceramics. Besides, the effects of Sm-substitution on the crystal structure, dielectric, ferroelectric and magnetic properties have been systematically studied. XRD Rietveld refinement confirms all the ceramics to be single phase with space group of P4bm. With the increase of x, Ba4(SmxLa1-x)2Fe2Nb8O30 ceramics transform from paraelectric to ferroelectric. The compositions of x = 0.9, 0.95 and 1 show first-order ferroelectric phase transitions above room temperature. Compared to composition x = 0, the dielectric constant of other compositions exhibits frequency stability and the dielectric loss decreases apparently at room temperature. The ferroelectricity improves with increasing x, which can be ascribed to the increased A2-A1 ionic radius difference. Meanwhile, the magnetic hysteresis loops are obtained for some compositions. All the results approve Ba4(SmxLa1-x)2Fe2Nb8O30 (x = 0.9, 0.95, 1) ceramics as room temperature multiferroic materials with intrinsic magnetoelectric effect.
The tunable magnetic and microwave absorption properties of the Nb5+–Ni2+ co-doped M-type barium ferrite

Abstract:M-type barium ferrites with Nb5+-Ni2+ ions substituting for Fe3+ ions (BaFe12-2xNbxNixO19, BFNNO, x = 0-0.8) were prepared using the sol-gel method. The results show that barium ferrite with hexagonal plate-like grains is obtained in the samples with x = 0-0.8 sintered at 1350 degrees C for 3 h. The concentration of Fe2+ ions increases by similar to 24% from 15.93% with x = 0 to 19.70% with x = 0.8. The anisotropic field H-a and coercive field H-c are adjusted freely from 15.75 kOe and 1.00 kOe to 6.04 kOe and 80 Oe with increasing x from 0 to 0.7-0.8, respectively. Meanwhile, the saturation magnetization, M-s, still maintains high values of >50 emu g(-1). Multiple magnetic resonance peaks and two reflection loss (RL) peaks appear in BFNNO, which shift from >40 GHz to <18 GHz with increasing Nb5+-Ni2+ ions. The broad bandwidth (BW) of 4.5 to 9.3 GHz, low RLmin of -17.4 to -31.8 dB and tunable effective absorption frequency range (EAFR, RL < -10 dB) from 440 GHz to <18 GHz are achieved in BFNNO under a matching thickness (d(mp)) of 0.85-1.45 mm with x = 0-0.8. This indicates that BFNNO is a competitive absorbing candidate which can operate over wide frequency ranges.

Abstract:In order to improve the microwave-absorption performance of barium ferrite and broaden its microwave-absorption band, BaFe12O19, Ba0.95Ca0.05Fe12O19, and Ba0.95Ca0.05Fe12−xCoxO19 (x = 0.1, 0.2, 0.3 and 0.4, respectively) hexaferrites were synthesized by the solid-state reaction method, and the influence of Co ion substitution on the phase composition, microstructure, magnetic properties, and microwave-absorption ability of the ferrites in this system was studied. Introducing minor Co ions (x < 0.2) facilitated sintering and grain growth. At x ≥ 0.2, XRD revealed the emergence of the Co2X phase alongside the BaM phase. Increasing Co ion concentration and the secondary X-phase led to slight reductions in saturation magnetization (69 to 63.5 emu/g) and substantial decline in coercivity (2107.02 to 111.21 Oe), attributed to grain size growth and Co2X's soft magnetic nature. Notably, Co2X incorporation significantly enhanced the microwave absorption and provided a tunable absorption band from the Ku to the C band. For a sample with a thickness of 2.0 mm and a doping level of x = 0.2, a minimum reflection loss of −59.5 dB was achieved at 8.92 GHz, with an effective absorption bandwidth of 3.31 GHz (7.07–10.38 GHz). The simple preparation method and good performance make Ba0.95Ca0.05Fe12−xCoxO19 (x = 0.1, 0.2, 0.3 and 0.4, respectively) hexaferrites promising microwave-absorbing materials.

Abstract:For the sol-gel-derived BaFe12-xNbxO19 (x = 0-0.6), coercivity (Hc) and saturation magnetization (Ms) vary from 3.53-0.85 kOe and 70.3-53.8 emu g-1 to 1.02-0.22 kOe and 69.6-59.5 emu g-1, respectively, with an increase in sintering temperature from 1250 °C to 1350 °C. Moreover, ε' and ε'' increase from 4.13-4.04 and 0.0049-0.0045 to 7.64-6.93 and 1.50-0.97 over 26.5-40 GHz, and the multi-resonance peaks in permeability shift from ∼40+ GHz to ∼27 GHz. The bandwidth (BW) and reflection loss peak intensity (RLp) are broadened and enhanced from 0.8 GHz and -10.3 dB of the sample with x = 0.2 sintered at 1250 °C under 0.92 mm to 11.9+ GHz and -54 dB, respectively, of the sample with x = 0.6 sintered at 1350 °C under 0.86 mm around a millimeter-wave atmospheric window of 35 GHz. The effects of Nb5+ content (x) and sintering temperature on grain size, phase compositions, formations of Fe2+ and oxygen vacancy, and thus on static magnetism and EM parameters are investigated. The correlations of multi-resonance permeability, enhanced permittivity, and the order of matching thickness with absorption properties are also discussed in detail.

Abstract:W-hexaferrites have been prepared using Fe-poor scheme BaZn_xCo_(2-x)Fe_(15.5)O_(27).The electromagnetic properties of ferrites were deeply studies by changing the substitution Zn content.The microwave performances of ferrite composites were also investigated by adjusting the concentration of ferrite in the composites.The research results demonstrated that the permittivity and the resonance frequency of ferrites could be controlled by regulating the content of substitution Zn,and the concentration of ferrite composite deeply influenced the resonance frequency of composites.All above provide a research basis for microwave application of W-hexaferrite.

Abstract:Nanostructured samples of X-type Ba2Co2Fe28O46 hexagonal ferrite have been prepared by using the stearic acid gel method, The nanocrystalline hexaferrite powders obtained at 750 degrees C were spherical in shape with grain sizes in the range of 15 similar to 25 nm. With increasing calcining temperature, the particles become a plate-like structure. The magnetic properties of X-type barium ferrite nanocrystals were measured by using Vibrating Sample Magnetometer(VSM). The results indicate that the magnetic properties of the tide products are different from those of the common X-type hexaferrites with a lower specific saturation magnetization(sigma(s)). Coercivity force (H-c) and the specific saturation magnetization(sigma(s)) of the products are influenced by the particles sizes.

Abstract:Excellent gyromagnetic properties of textured, bulk Ba-hexaferrite samples are required for low-loss, self-biased applications for microwave and millimeter-wave (MMW) devices. However, conventionally processed bulk Ba-hexaferrite ceramics typically demonstrate low remanent magnetization values, 4πMr, of 2.0~3.0 kG, and relatively large ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) linewidths, ΔHFMR, of 0.8~2 kOe. These properties lead to the development of high-performance, practical devices. Herein, crystallographically textured Ba-hexaferrite samples, of the composition Ba0.8La0.2Fe11.8Cu0.2O19, having excellent functional properties, are proposed. These materials exhibit strong anisotropy fields, Ha, of ~14.6 kOe, high remanent magnetization, 4πMr, of 3.96 kGs, and a low ΔHFMR of 401 Oe at zero-bias field at the Q-band. Concomitantly, the broadband millimeter-wave transmittance was utilized to determine the complex permeability, μ*, and permittivity, ε*, of textured hexaferrites. Based on Schlöemann’s theory of complex permeability, μ*, the remanent magnetization, 4πMr, anisotropy field, Ha, and effective linewidth, ΔHeff, were estimated; these values agree well with measured values.

Abstract:M-type hexagonal barium ferrite (BaM) has received much attention in the application of self-biased microwave devices because of its large anisotropic field (H a ) and high saturation magnetisation ( M s ), but the increased H a inevitably increases the microwave magnetic loss of the device. In addition, the devices need to have a high M s for high frequency applications. To address these issues, we used La 3+ and Zn 2+ instead of Ba 2+ and Fe 3+ ions to modulate the H a and M s of BaM, respectively. Ba 1-y La y Fe 12-x Zn x O 19 (x=y=0.1-0.5) M-type hexagonal ferrite was synthesised by conventional solid-phase methods. The La-Zn co-substituted BaM samples were shown to be purely single phase by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. The lattice parameters, specific surface area, crystallite size, dislocation density and microstrain of the samples were also calculated using the XRD data. Furthermore, La 3+ and Zn 2+ can not only modulate the sample H a and M s between 10214-12102 Oe and 62.94-78.23 emu/g, respectively. It also increases the dielectric constant of the sample while making it more dense. At x=0.3 BaM detects relatively satisfactory properties: large M s =63.12 emu/g, suitable H a =10214 Oe and H c =2248.87 Oe, high M r / M s =0.832 and low dielectric loss, which provide good candidates for next-generation self-biased and low-loss microwave wave devices.

Abstract:Hexagonal ferrites of M -type (in particular, BaFe 12 O 19 ) are magnetic materials with functional characteristics affected both by chemical composition and technology of their synthesis. We present the results of studying the magnetic and structural properties of BaFe 12 – x Cu x O 19 hexaferrites ( x = 0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4) obtained by hydrothermal synthesis with partial substitution of copper for iron. The composition of the synthesized samples was analyzed using X-ray diffraction, and the magnetic characteristics were measured using a vibration magnetometer. It has been revealed that the coercivity of the ferrite powders depends non-monotonically on the copper concentration and reaches the maximum (5629 Oe) and minimum (4698 Oe) values at x = 0 and x = 0.2. The presence of copper reduces the coercive force, but at the same time the values remain rather high compared to the results of similar studies. The saturation magnetization of the obtained ferrites gradually decreases (from 65.88 to 60.75 A · m 2 /kg at x = 0 and x = 0.4, respectively) with increasing. The distribution of Cu over ferrite sublattices was studied using Mössbauer spectroscopy. It is shown that in the hexaferrite structure, copper ions preferentially occupy 12 k and 4 f 1 sites. Hence, a decrease in the saturation magnetization with increasing x is most likely attributed to the presence of side non-magnetic phases observed on X-ray diffraction patterns. It is also revealed that during synthesis, copper participates in the formation of low-melting phases on the surface of hexaferrite grains which promotes agglomeration of the particles. Thus, the resulting powders can potentially be sintered at lower temperatures and, therefore, without a significant increase in the size of crystallites. Herewith, the coercivity retains its original high values. The results obtained can be used in developing ferrite permanent magnets with improved characteristics.
Excellent microwave and magnetic properties of La-Cu substituted Ba-hexaferrites prepared by ceramic process

Abstract:We demonstrate exceptional microwave magnetic performance of crystallographycally textured barium hexaferrites prepared by conventional ceramic method. Vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) and rectangular cavity perturbation measurements indicate that bulk Ba0.8La0.2Fe11.2Cu0.2O19 samples exhibit a strong magnetic anisotropy field Ha of 14.6kOe, the highest remanent magnetization of 3.96kGs, and the lowest ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) linewidth of 401Oe with zero applied bias field at Q-band. Broadband millimeter-wave transmittance measurements determined the complex permeability and permittivity. The remanent magnetization, anisotropy field Ha, and effective linewidth were also estimated based on Schlomann's theory of the complex permeability. These calculated values are in good agreement with the VSM and FMR measurements.

Abstract:This article presents a comprehensive investigation into the structural, magnetic, and dielectric properties of Ba 1− x Co x Fe 12 O 19 ( x = 0.00, 0.10, 0.20, 0.30, 0.40 and 0.50) prepared at 1100 °C using the heat treatment method. The FTIR analysis revealed the formation of the ferrite phase. XRD analysis provided valuable crystallographic parameters and confirmed the formation of M-type hexaferrites along with a BaFe 2 O 4 phase. TGA investigations elucidated the thermal stability after 600 °C. VSM measurements unveiled the variation in magnetic saturation with cobalt substitutions from 24.390 to 41.629 Am 2 kg −1 ; coercivity from 1508 to 3577 Oe. Formed samples are magnetically hard in nature. The dielectric measurements indicate that the conduction observed at low frequencies can be attributed to the presence of grain boundaries, while the conduction observed at higher frequencies is mostly influenced by the grains themselves. All samples have a frequency-dependent increase in AC conductivity. These findings contribute to the understanding of its potential applications in the automotive industry, sensors, biomedical applications and related fields.

Abstract:Single phase Ca-substituted W-type hexaferrites Sr1-xCaxZn2Fe16O27(x = 0.00(0.25)1.00) have successfully been synthesized by using sol–gel self-combustion at 1300°C. These hexaferrites are investigated by x-ray difrractometry (XRD), scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, vibrating sample magnetometry, and vector network analysis. XRD analysis confirms the formation of a single W-type hexaferrites phase. The DC electrical resistivity increases with incrementing Ca contents. The morphology of all the hexaferrites shows hexagonal platelet-like structure. The prepared ferrites depict soft magnetic nature with high saturation magnetization, low coercivity and enhanced magnetic moments. The complex parameters such as complex permittivity and permeability decrease with the increasing Ca content. The prepared samples show good quality factor of 3 at 6 GHz, AC conductivity changes from 0.9 S/m to 0.5 S/m, and tangent loss decreases from 0.5 to 0.34 with Ca substitution. These improved characteristics make these hexaferrites valuable for devices such as microwave absorbers operated at higher frequencies.

Abstract:Saturation magnetization, magneto-crystalline anisotropy field and dielectric properties are closely related to microwave devices applied at different frequencies. For regulating the magnetic and dielectric properties of W-type barium ferrites, single-phase BaMe 2 Fe 16 O 27 (Me = Fe, Mn, Zn, Ni, Co) with different Me ions were synthesized by the high-temperature solid-state method. The saturation magnetization (M s ) range from 47.77 emu/g to 95.34 emu/g and the magnetic anisotropy field (H a ) range from 10700.60 Oe to 13739.57 Oe, depending on the type of cation substitution in the hexagonal lattice. The dielectric permittivity and dielectric loss decrease with increasing frequency of the AC electric field in the low-frequency region, while they almost remain constant in the high-frequency region. The characteristics of easy regulation and preparation make it a potential candidate for use in microwave device applications.

Abstract:W-type ferrites possessing low cost and high chemical stability, show high potential in electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption field. However, due to the low dielectric loss, developing high EMW absorption performance of W-type ferrites remains desired. Here, rare earth (RE) cerium (Ce)-doped W-type barium ferrites (Ba1-yCeyNi2Fe15.4O27, y = 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, 0.6) are prepared by a sol-gel approach. The influences of Ce doping are detailed analyzed. Ce ions with unpaired 4f electrons and strong spin-orbit coupling of angular momentum enhance the dielectric and magnetic properties of ferrites. Ba0.7Ce0.3Ni2Fe15.4O27 achieves the minimum reflection loss (RLmin) value of -52 dB while Ba0.6Ce0.4Ni2Fe15.4O27 showcases the widest effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 1.36 GHz associated with the RLmin reaching -38 dB, significantly outperforming the undoped ferrites. This work thus demonstrates a high-efficiency utilization of Ce for enhancing the EMW absorption performance of widely employed W-type barium ferrites, efficiently advancing the application field of RE elements.
