Abstract:In this paper, the estimations of maximum genus orientable embeddings of graphs are studied, and an exponential lower bound for such numbers are found. Moreover, such two extremal embeddings (i.e., the maximum genus orientable embedding of the current graph and the minimum genus orientable embedding of the complete graph) are sometimes closely related with each other. As applications, we estimate the number of the minimum genus orientable embeddings for complete graph, by estimating the number of maximum genus orientable embedings for current graph.

Abstract:A cellular embedding of an Eulerian digraph D into a closed surface is said to be directed if the boundary of each face is a directed closed walk in D. The directed genus polynomial of an Eulerian digraph D is the polynomialGamma(D)(x) = Sigma(h >= 0) g(h)(D)x(h)where g(h)(D) is the number of directed embeddings into the orientable surface S-h, of genus h, for h = 0, 1, .... The sequence {gh(D) vertical bar It >= 0}, which is called the directed genus distribution of the digraph D, is known for very few classes of graphs, compared to the genus distribution of a graph. This paper introduces a variety of methods for calculating the directed genus distributions of Eulerian digraphs. We use them to derive an explicit formula for the directed genus distribution of any 4-regular outerplanar digraph. We show that the directed genus distribution of such a digraph is determined by the red-blue star decompositions of the characteristic tree for an outerplanar embedding. The directed genus distribution of a 4-regular outerplanar digraph is proved to be log-concave, which is consistent with an affirmative answer to a question of Bonnington et al. (2002). Indeed, the corresponding genus polynomial is real-rooted. We introduce Eulerian splitting at a vertex of a digraph, and we prove a splitting theorem for digraph embedding distributions that is analogous to the splitting theorem for (undirected) graph embedding distributions. This new splitting theorem allows conversion of the enumeration of embeddings of a digraph with vertex degrees larger than 4 into a problem of enumerating the embeddings of some 4-regular digraphs. Abstract:In this paper, we investigate fundamental cycles in a graph G and their relations with graph embeddings. We show that a graph G may be embedded in an orientable surface with genus at least g if and only if for any spanning tree T, there exists a sequence of fundamental cycles C 1,C 2,…,C 2g with C 2i−1 ∩ C 2i ≠ /0 for 1 ⩽ i ⩽ g. In particular, among β(G) fundamental cycles of any spanning tree T of a graph G, there are exactly 2γM (G) cycles C 1, C 2,…,C 2γM(G) such that C 2i−1 ∩ C 2i ≠ /0 for 1 ⩽ i ⩽ γM (G), where β(G) and γM (G) are the Betti number and the maximum genus of G, respectively. This implies that it is possible to construct an orientable embedding with large genus of a graph G from an arbitrary spanning tree T (which may have very large number of odd components in G E(T)). This is different from the earlier work of Xuong and Liu, where spanning trees with small odd components are needed. In fact, this makes a common generalization of Xuong, Liu and Fu et al. Furthermore, we show that (1) this result is useful for locating the maximum genus of a graph having a specific edge-cut. Some known results for embedded graphs are also concluded; (2) the maximum genus problem may be reduced to the maximum matching problem. Based on this result and the algorithm of Micali-Vazirani, we present a new efficient algorithm to determine the maximum genus of a graph in $O((\beta (G))^{\frac{5}{2}} )$ steps. Our method is straight and quite different from the algorithm of Furst, Gross and McGeoch which depends on a result of Giles where matroid parity method is needed.

Abstract:In this paper, we analyze embeddings of grid graphs on orientable surfaces. We determine the genus of two infinite classes of 3-dimensional grid graphs that do not admit quadrilateral embeddings and effective upper bounds for the genus of any 3-dimensional grid graph, both in terms of a grid graph’s combinatorics. As an application, we provide a complete classification of planar and toroidal grid graphs. Our work requires a variety of combinatorial and graph theoretic arguments to determine effective lower bounds on the genus of a grid graph, along with explicitly constructing embeddings of grid graphs on surfaces to determine effective upper bounds on their genera.

Abstract:We use the Atiyah-Bott-Segal-Singer Lefschetz fixed point formula to calculate the Hirzebruch ?y genus Xy(S[n]), where S[n] is the Hilbert scheme of points of length n of a surface S. Combinatorial interpretation of the weights of the fixed points of the natural torus action on ( 2)[n] is used. This is the first step to prove a conjectural formula about the elliptic genus of the Hilbert schemes.

Abstract:There are many results on the maximum genus, among which most are written for the existence of values of such embeddings, and few attention has been paid to the estimation of such embeddings and their applications. In this paper we study the number of maximum genus embeddings for a graph and find an exponential lower bound for such numbers. Our results show that in general case, a simple connected graph has exponentially many distinct maximum genus embeddings. In particular, a connected cubic graph G of order n always has at least $(\sqrt 2 )^{m + n + \tfrac{\alpha }{2}} $ distinct maximum genus embeddings, where α and m denote, respectively, the number of inner vertices and odd components of an optimal tree T. What surprise us most is that such two extremal embeddings (i.e., the maximum genus embeddings and the genus embeddings) are sometimes closely related with each other. In fact, as applications, we show that for a sufficient large natural number n, there are at least $C2^{\tfrac{n}{4}} $ many genus embeddings for complete graph K n with n ≡ 4, 7, 10 (mod12), where C is a constance depending on the value of n of residue 12. These results improve the bounds obtained by Korzhik and Voss and the methods used here are much simpler and straight.

Abstract:Let Wn be a wheel graph with n spokes. How does the genus change if adding a degree-3 vertex v, which is not in V (Wn), to the graph Wn? In this paper, through the joint-tree model we obtain that the genus of Wn+v equals 0 if the three neighbors of v are in the same face boundary of P(Wn); otherwise, (Wn + v) = 1, where P(Wn) is the unique planar embedding of Wn. In addition, via the independent set, we provide a lower bound on the maximum genus of graphs, which may be better than both the result of D. Li Y. Liu and the result of Z. Ouyang etc: in Europ. J. Combinatorics. Furthermore, we obtain a relation between the independence number and the maximum genus of graphs, and provide an algorithm to obtain the lower bound on the number of the distinct maximum genus embedding of the complete graph Km, which, in some sense, improves the result of Y. Caro and S. Stahl respectively.

Abstract:In this paper, the problem of construction of exponentially many minimum genus embeddings of complete graphs in surfaces are studied. There are three approaches to solve this problem. The first approach is to construct exponentially many graphs by the theory of graceful labeling of paths; the second approach is to find a current assignment of the current graph by the theory of current graph; the third approach is to find exponentially many embedding (or rotation) schemes of complete graph by finding exponentially many distinct maximum genus embeddings of the current graph. According to this three approaches, we can construct exponentially many minimum genus embeddings of complete graph K 12s+8 in orientable surfaces, which show that there are at least $\frac{10}{3} \times (\frac{200}{9})^s$ distinct minimum genus embeddings for K 12s+8 in orientable surfaces. We have also proved that K 12s+8 has at least $\frac{10}{3} \times (\frac{200}{9})^s$ distinct minimum genus embeddings in non-orientable surfaces.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the distribution of the genuses of cluster quivers of finite mutation type. First, we prove that in the $11$ exceptional cases, the distribution of genuses is $0$ or $1$. Next, we consider the relationship between the genus of an oriented surface and that of cluster quivers from this surface. It is verified that the genus of an oriented surface is an upper bound for the genuses of cluster quivers from this surface. Furthermore, for any non-negative integer $n$ and a closed oriented surface of genus $n$, we show that there always exist a set of punctures and a triangulation of this surface such that the corresponding cluster quiver from this triangulation is exactly of genus $n$.
Jungerman ladders and index 2 constructions for genus embeddings of dense regular graphs

Abstract:We construct several families of minimum genus embeddings of dense graphs using index 2 current graphs. In particular, we complete the genus formula for the octahedral graphs, solving a longstanding conjecture of Jungerman and Ringel, and find triangular embeddings of complete graphs minus a Hamiltonian cycle, making partial progress on a problem of White. Index 2 current graphs are also applied to various cases of the genus of the complete graphs, in some cases yielding simpler solutions, e.g., the nonorientable genus of $K_{12s+8}-K_2$. In addition, we give a topological proof of a theorem of Jungerman that shows that a symmetric type of such current graphs might not exist roughly "half of the time."

Abstract:Total embedding distributions have been known for a few classes of graphs. Chen, Gross, and Rieper computed it for necklaces, close-end ladders and cobblestone paths. Kwak and Shim computed it for bouquets of circles and dipoles. In this paper, a splitting theorem is generalized and the embedding distributions of generalized fan graphs are obtained.

Abstract:In 1965 Edmonds showed that every eulerian graph has a bi-eulerian embedding, i.e., an embedding with exactly two faces, each bounded by an euler circuit. We refine this result by giving conditions for a graph to have a bi-eulerian embedding that is specifically orientable or nonorientable. We give connections to the maximum genus problem for directed embeddings of digraphs, in which every face is bounded by a directed circuit. Given an eulerian digraph $D$ with all vertices of degree 2 mod 4 and a directed euler circuit $T$ of $D$, we show that $D$ has an orientable bi-eulerian directed embedding with one of the faces bounded by $T$; this is a maximum genus directed embedding. This result also holds when $D$ has exactly two vertices of degree $0$ mod $4$, provided they are interlaced by $T$. More generally, if $D$ has $\ell$ vertices of degree 0 mod 4, we can find an orientable directed embedding with a face bounded by $T$ and with at most $\ell+1$ other faces. We show that given an eulerian graph $G$ and a circuit decomposition $C$ of $G$, there is an nonorientable embedding of $G$ with the elements of $C$ bounding faces and with one additional face bounded by an euler circuit, unless every block of $G$ is a cycle and $C$ is the collection of cycles of $G$. In particular, every eulerian graph that is not edgeless or a cycle has a nonorientable bi-eulerian embedding with a given euler circuit $T$ bounding one of the faces. Polynomial-time algorithms giving the specified embeddings are implicit in our proofs.

Abstract:By using biclique partitions of digraphs, this paper gives reduction formulas for the number of oriented spanning trees, stationary distribution vector and Kemeny's constant of digraphs. As applications, we give a method for enumerating spanning trees of undirected graphs by vertex degrees and biclique partitions. The biclique partition formula also extends the results of Knuth and Levine from line digraphs to general digraphs.

Abstract:The strong embedding conjecture states thatany 2-connected graph has a strongembedding on some surface. It implies the circuitdouble cover conjecture: Any 2-connected graph has a circuitdouble cover. Conversely, it is nottrue. But for a 3-regular graph, the two conjecturesare equivalent. In this paper, a characterization of graphshaving a strong embedding with exactly 3 faces, which is thestrong embedding of maximum genus, is given. In addition, somegraphs with the property are provided. More generally, an upperbound of the maximum genus of strong embeddings of a graph ispresented too. Lastly, it is shown that the interpolationtheorem is true to planar Halin graph.

Abstract:Since the introductory investigation of maximum genus by Nordhaus,Stewart and White[1],the up-embeddability fo graphs has been paid great attention so far.The maximum genus r_M(G) of a connected graph G is maximum integer k with the property that exists a celluar embedding of G on the orientable surface S_k of genus k.Since any celluar embedding must have at least one face,the Eluer polyhedral equation implies an upper bound on the maximum genus the number β(G) is known as the Betti number of the connected graph G.Liu[2],Xuong[3] and Nebesky[4] have independently provided different necessary and sufficient conditions on the upper embeddability of graphs.This paper mainly prove the following result:let G be a simple graph,then G~3 is up-embedable.Especially,if k≥4,then G~k are up-embedable as well.

Abstract:An embedding of a graph on an orientable surface is orientably-regular (or rotary, in an equivalent terminology) if the group of orientation-preserving automorphisms of the embedding is transitive (and hence regular) on incident vertex-edge pairs of the graph. A classification of orientably-regular embeddings of complete graphs was obtained by L. D. James and G. A. Jones [in "Regular orientable imbeddings of complete graphs", J. Combinatorial Theory Ser. B 39 (1985), 353-367], pointing out interesting connections to finite fields and Frobenius groups. By a combination of graph-theoretic methods and tools from combinatorial group theory we extend results of James and Jones to classification of orientably-regular embeddings of complete multigraphs with arbitrary edge-multiplicity.

Abstract:We show that for all $n \equiv 0 \pmod{6}$, $n \geq 18$, there is an orientable triangular embedding of the octahedral graph on $n$ vertices that can be augmented with handles to produce a genus embedding of the complete graph of the same order. For these values of $n$, the intermediate embeddings of the construction also determine some surface crossing numbers of the complete graph on $n$ vertices and the genus of all graphs on $n$ vertices and minimum degree $n-2$.

Abstract:In this paper, we study lower bound of the number of maximum orientable genus embeddings (or MGE in short) for a loopless graph. We show that a connected loopless graph of order n has at least ${\frac{1}{4^{\gamma_M(G)}}\prod_{v\in{V(G)}}{(d(v)-1)!}}$ distinct MGE’s, where γ M (G) is the maximum orientable genus of G. Infinitely many examples show that this bound is sharp (i.e., best possible) for some types of graphs. Compared with a lower bound of Stahl (Eur J Combin 13:119–126, 1991) which concerns upper-embeddable graphs (i.e., embedded graphs with at most two facial walks), this result is more general and effective in the case of (sparse) graphs permitting relative small-degree vertices. We also obtain a similar formula for maximum nonorientable genus embeddings for general graphs. If we apply our orientable results to the current graph G s of K 12s+7, then G s has at least 23s distinct MGE’s.This implies that K 12s+7 has at least (22) s nonisomorphic cyclic oriented triangular embeddings for sufficient large s.
