Abstract:In this paper, we analyze the convergence of the general nonstationary iterative methods for solving consistent singular linear equations (in particular, singular Hermitian positive semidefinite linear systems), and we discuss relations of general stationary results and ours. We utilize the quotient convergence to prove the convergence of the two-stage iterative algorithms for solving the consistent singular Hermitian positive semidefinite linear equations.

Abstract:Recently, Lee et al. [Young-ju Lee, Jinbiao Wu, Jinchao Xu, Ludmil Zikatanov, On the convergence of iterative methods for semidefinite linear systems, SIAM J. Matrix Anal. Appl. 28 (2006) 634–641] introduce new criteria for the semi-convergence of general iterative methods for semidefinite linear systems based on matrix splitting. The new conditions generalize the classical notion of P-regularity introduced by Keller [H.B. Keller, On the solution of singular and semidefinite linear systems by iterations, SIAM J. Numer. Anal. 2 (1965) 281–290]. In view of their results, we consider here stipulations on a splitting A=M-N, which lead to fixed point systems such that, the iterative scheme converges to a weighted Moore–Penrose solution to the system Ax=b. Our results extend the result of Lee et al. to a more general case and we also show that it requires less restrictions on the splittings than Keller’s P-regularity condition to ensure the convergence of iterative scheme.

Abstract:In this paper, we establish results fully addressing two open problems proposed recently by I. Ivanov, see Nonlinear Analysis 69 (2008) 4012-4024, with respect to the convergence of the accelerated Riccati iteration method for solving the continuous coupled algebraic Riccati equation, or CCARE for short. These results confirm several desirable features of that method, including the monotonicity and boundedness of the sequences it produces, its capability of determining whether the CCARE has a solution, the extremal solutions it computes under certain circumstances, and its faster convergence than the regular Riccati iteration method.

Abstract:Recently, a class of generalized shift-splitting iteration methods were proposed for solving nonsingular nonsymmetric saddle point problems (Cao et al., 2015). In this paper, the generalized shift-splitting iteration method is extended to solve singular nonsymmetric saddle point problems. Semi-convergence of the generalized shift-splitting iteration method is carefully analyzed, which shows that the iterative sequence generated by the generalized shift-splitting iteration method converges to a solution of the singular saddle point problem unconditionally. Numerical results verify the robustness and efficiency of the generalized shift-splitting iteration method.

Abstract:Singular systems with index one arise in many applications, such as Markov chain modelling. In this paper, we use the group inverse to characterize the convergence and quotient convergence properties of stationary iterative schemes for solving consistent singular linear systems when the index of the coefficient matrix equals one. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for the convergence of stationary iterative methods for such problems. Next we show that for the stationary iterative method, the convergence and the quotient convergence are equivalent.

Abstract:In this paper, we use the group inverse to characterize the quotient convergence of an iterative method for solving consistent singular linear systems, when the matrix index equals one. Next, we show that for stationary splitting iterative methods, the convergence and the quotient convergence are equivalent, which was first proved in [7]. Lastly, we propose a (multi-)splitting iterative method A=F–G, where the splitting matrix F may be singular, endowed with group inverse, by using F # as a solution tool for any iteration. In this direction, sufficient conditions for the quotient convergence of these methods are given. Then, by using the equivalence between convergence and quotient convergence, the classical convergence of these methods is proved. These latter results generalize Cao’s result, which was given for nonsingular splitting matrices F.

Abstract:General stationary iterative methods with a singular matrix M for solving range‐Hermitian singular linear systems are presented, some convergence conditions and the representation of the solution are also given. It can be verified that the general Ortega–Plemmons theorem and Keller theorem for the singular matrix M still hold. Furthermore, the singular matrix M can act as a good preconditioner for solving range‐Hermitian linear systems. Numerical results have demonstrated the effectiveness of the general stationary iterations and the singular preconditioner M. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract:The present paper is concerned with the convergence problem of Newton's method to solve singular systems of equations with constant rank derivatives. Under the hypothesis that the derivatives satisfy a type of weak Lipschitz condition, a convergence criterion based on the information around the initial point is established for Newton's method for singular systems of equations with constant rank derivatives. Applications to two special and important cases: the classical Lipschitz condition and the Smale's assumption, are provided; the latter, in particular, extends and improves the corresponding result due to Dedieu and Kim in [J.P. Dedieu, M. Kim, Newton's method for analytic systems of equations with constant rank derivatives, J. Complexity 18 (2002) 187–209].

Abstract:We present some new convergence results with regard to parallel matrix multisplitting iterations for the solution of linear systems of equations.Several conditions equivalent to the known convergence criteria are obtained when the coefficient matrix is monotone and the multisplitting sequence is weakly regular.Moreover,the convergence of asynchronous iterations is shown under a weaker condition.We also give a convergence condition for the synchronous iterations,which is different from and weaker than that of the asynchronous iterations.

Abstract:The strong P-regular splitting is put forward and defined for iterative methods of non-Hermitian linear systems in the paper. The strong P-regular splitting combining SOR iterative methods and relaxed SOR iterative methods are established, and conditions guaranteeing the convergence are presented. Furthermore, two numerical experiments are done to illustrate the convergence and effectiveness of our iterative methods.

Abstract:Data fitting is an extensively employed modeling tool in geometric design. With the advent of the big data era, the data sets to be fitted are made larger and larger, leading to more and more leastsquares fitting systems with singular coefficient matrices. LSPIA (least-squares progressive iterative approximation) is an efficient iterative method for the least-squares fitting. However, the convergence of LSPIA for the singular least-squares fitting systems remains as an open problem. In this paper, the authors showed that LSPIA for the singular least-squares fitting systems is convergent. Moreover, in a special case, LSPIA converges to the Moore-Penrose (M-P) pseudo-inverse solution to the leastsquares fitting result of the data set. This property makes LSPIA, an iterative method with clear geometric meanings, robust in geometric modeling applications. In addition, the authors discussed some implementation detail of LSPIA, and presented an example to validate the convergence of LSPIA for the singular least-squares fitting systems.

Abstract:In this paper, the generalized shift-splitting (GSS) iteration method is used to solve nonsymmetric singular saddle point systems with the positive real (1, 1)-block sub-matrix. By a careful analysis of the spectral properties of the corresponding iteration matrix, we investigate the semi-convergence property of the GSS iteration method, give the sharper bounds of the eigenvalues for the GSS iteration method and propose the inexact GSS iteration method, also. Numerical experiments are given to show the correctness of the theoretical analysis and the feasibility of the GSS preconditioner with appropriate parameters.

Abstract:In this paper, we analyze the convergence and semi-convergence of a class of SSOR-like methods with four real functions for augmented systems. The class takes most existed SSOR-like methods as its special cases. For nonsingular systems, we obtain the minimum of convergence factors of all the SSOR-like methods in the class, and study when it can be reached by the convergence factors of methods in the class. By considering the equivalence of methods, we show that most of the existed SSOR-like methods have the same minimum of convergence factors.
