Abstract:Lactoferrin, a multifunctional iron-binding protein found in milk and other body fluids, possesses numerous biological activities. The functional activity of lactoferrin lies not only in its iron-binding capacity, but also in the molecular mechanisms by which it can affect important chemical components in the host. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying these activities remain unelucidated. In this paper, we review the structure, properties, and contents of different lactoferrin milk sources. The different biological activities, namely antibacterial, antiviral, immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, bone regeneration, and improved metabolic disorder bioactivities, and the associated potential mechanisms of lactoferrin are summarized with the aim of providing a reference for the development of lactoferrin-related products.

Abstract:Lactoferrin (Lf), existing widely in human and mammalian milk, is a multifunctional glycoprotein with many functions, such as immune regulation, anti-inflammation, antibacterial, antiviral, and antioxidant. These extensive functions largely attribute to its ability to chelate iron and interfere with the cellular receptors of pathogenic microorganisms and their hosts. Moreover, it is non-toxic and has good compatibility with other supplements. Thus, Lf has been widely used in food nutrition, drug carriers, biotechnology, and feed development. Although Lf has been continuously explored and studied, a more comprehensive and systematic compendium is still required. This review presents the recent advances in the structure and physicochemical properties of Lf as well as clinical studies on human diseases, with the aim of providing a reference for further research of Lf and the development of its related functional products.

Abstract:Lactoferrin is an iron-binding glycoprotein with a molecular weight of about 80 kDa that belongs to the transferrin family. Due to its unique physical and chemical properties, lactoferrin has a variety of biological functions including antibacterial, antiviral, anticancer, immunomodulatory activities and regulation of iron absorption. High-yield production of recombinant lactoferrin with biological activity and its application in clinical treatment have been a hot topic for long time. With the development of genetic engineering techniques, various expression systems have been developed to produce recombinant lactoferrin. In this review, we summarize physicochemical characteristics, biological activities, clinical studies and current recombinant expression systems of lactoferrin, in order to provide references for its clinical application.

This review summarizes the recent research progress on the physiological functions of lactoferrin, and summarizes various technological advances in the separation and purification of lactoferrin. Furthermore, it conducts a detailed comparative analysis of various production and drying methods, providing fresh insights and a robust theoretical framework for advancing lactoferrin-related applications. The development of cost-effective and efficient lactoferrin production techniques holds paramount importance, as it plays a pivotal role in accelerating industrial lactoferrin production and driving growth in the dairy industry.

It contains 25～28 amino acid residues and has various sheltered biological functions to (human) and animal, such as bacterial killing, fungal resisting and viral inhibition and so on. This review discusses structure, bio-functions and progress of study on lactoferricin at home and abroad.

Abstract:Scope: Lactoferrin (LF) is an iron-bound protein with a molecular weight of about 80 kDa. LF has many biological functions such as antibacterial, antiviral, immunomodulatory, and anticancer. The purpose of this study is to explore the research trend of LF through bibliometric analysis. Methods and results: The search is conducted in the Web of Science Core Collection database, and then the publications information of LF related literature is exported. Based on CiteSpace and VOSviewer software, countries, institutions, authors, journals, keywords, and so on are analyzed. Since 1987, a total of 9382 literature have been included, and the number of papers related to LF has increased year by year. These publications come mainly from 124 countries and 725 institutions. Of the 1256 authors analyzed, Valenti Piera is the one with the most publications. The burst strength of gut microbiota, antioxidant, nanoparticles, and in vitro digestion are 21.3, 15.63, 23.03, and 13.51, respectively. They represent the frontier of research in this field and are developing rapidly. Conclusion: This study shows that LF has important research value. The study of LF nanoparticles and the effects of LF on the gut microbiota are an emerging field that helps to explore new research directions.

Abstract:Lactoferrin is a nonheme iron-binding glucoprotein,which is abundant in lactal gland secretions.Initially it was discovered to be able to transport iron in vivo and resist bacterial and viral infections via regulation of host immunity.Recent researches revealed that lactoferrin can raise Bacillus Calmette-Guerin(BCG) inoculation efficacy through stimulating macrophage to produce interleukin-12,etc.and enhancing delayed allergy reaction as an immunoadjuvant.It also participates tumor immunity by regulating cellular immune function including that of T lymphocyte.In addition,lactoferrin plays up-regulatory role in immunie reparation.This review introduces the effect of lactoferrin on mucosa immunity,tumour immunity,allergies and immunie reparation.Along with further studies and findings on its mechanism in immunomodulation,lactoferrin could be widely used in clinical practice as an immunomodulator.

Abstract:Lactoferrin (LF) is an 80 kD iron-binding glycoprotein that is most highly produced in human and bovine milk and is also widely distributed in mammals. Researches of more than 70 years on lactoferrin prove that the molecule, as a nutritional molecule for mammals, possesses several physiological roles, including maintaining iron absorption, anti-microbial activity and immune modulation. Recent studies have demonstrated that LF can protect against cancer in experimental animals and has anticarcinogenic activity in many human tumors. As a natural nutrition, the "old" gene-lactoferrin has attracted attention from medical community for its "new"anticarcinogenic role.

Abstract:Lactoferrin is a naturalcationic iron-binding glycoprotein of the transferrin family found in bovine milk and other exocrine secretions, including lacrimal fluid, saliva, and bile. Lactoferrin has been investigated for its numerous powerful influences, including anticancer, anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, anti-osteoporotic, antifungal, antibacterial, antiviral, immunomodulatory, hepatoprotective, and other beneficial health effects. Lactoferrin demonstrated several nutraceutical and pharmaceutical potentials and have a significant impact on improving the health of humans and animals. Lactoferrin plays a critical role in keeping the normal physiological homeostasis associated with the development of pathological disorders. The current review highlights the medicinal value, nutraceutical role, therapeutic application, and outstanding favorable health sides of lactoferrin, which would benefit from more exploration of this glycoprotein for the design of effective medicines, drugs, and pharmaceuticals for safeguarding different health issues in animals and humans.

Abstract:Lactoferrin (Lf) is a natural iron-binding globular glycoprotein, present mainly in milk. It maintains human health through its multifunctional activities, including immunomodulation, iron metabolism, and antioxidant and prebiotic efficacy. It also shows anti-microbial, anti-fungal, and anti-viral activities against a broad spectrum of viruses, including SARS-CoV-2 that causes COVID-19. In addition, several investigations established that Lf is involved in bone metabolism, neural development, and metabolic disorders. In this review, we summarize the in vitro and in vivo studies on the health benefits of Lf and its bioavailability. Furthermore, we briefly describe the production, industrial applications and future prospects of Lf.

Abstract:<span>Lactoferrin (Lf), a bioactive protein initially found in many biological secretions including milk, is regarded as the nutritional supplement or therapeutic ligand due to its multiple functions. Research on its mode of action reveals that intact Lf or its active peptide (i.e., lactoferricin) shows an important multifunctional performance. Oral delivery is considered as the most convenient administration route for this bioactive protein. Unfortunately, Lf is sensitive to the gastrointestinal (GI) physicochemical stresses and lactoferricin is undetectable in GI digesta. This review introduces the functionality of Lf at the molecular level and its degradation behavior in GI tract is discussed in detail. Subsequently, the absorption and transport of Lf from intestine into the blood circulation, which is pivotal to its health promoting effects in various tissues, and some assisting labeling methods are discussed. Stabilization technologies aiming at preserving the structural integrity and functional properties of orally administrated Lf are summarized and compared. Altogether, this work comprehensively reviews the structure-function relationship of Lf, its oral fate and the development of stabilization technologies for the enhancement of the oral bioavailability of Lf. The existing limitations and scope for future research are also discussed.</span>

Abstract:Lactoferrin (LF) is a multifunctional protein occurring in many biological secretions including milk. It possesses iron binding/transferring, antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, anti-inflammatory and anti-carcinogenic properties. These functional properties intimately depend on the structural integrity of LF especially its higher order conformation. LF is primarily extracted from bovine milk and it is subsequently added into many commercial products such as nutritional supplements, infant formula, cosmetics and toothpaste. LF is sensitive to denaturation induced by temperature and other physicochemical stresses. Hence, the extraction, powder formation processes of LF and processing parameters of LF-containing products have to be optimized to minimise its undesired denaturation. This review documents the advances made on structure-function relationships and discusses the effectiveness of methods used to preserve the structure of LF during thermal processing. Oral delivery, as the most convenient way for administering LF, is also discussed focusing on digestion of LF in oral, gastric and intestinal stages. The effectiveness of methods used to deliver LF to intestinal digestion stage in structurally intact form is also compared. Altogether, this work comprehensively reviews the fate of LF during thermal processing and digestion, and suggests suitable means to preserve its structural integrity and functional properties. Scope of review The manuscript aims at providing a comprehensive review of the latest publications on four aspects of LF: structural features, functional properties, nature and extent of denaturation and gastrointestinal digestion. It also analyses how these publications benefit food and pharmaceutical industries.

Abstract:Lactoferrin (LF) is one of the major functional proteins in maintaining human health due to its antioxidant, antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory activities. Abnormal levels of LF in the human body are related to some serious diseases, such as inflammatory bowel disease, Alzheimer’s disease and dry eye disease. Recent studies indicate that LF can be used as a biomarker for diagnosis of these diseases. Many methods have been developed to detect the level of LF. In this review, the biofunctions of LF and its potential to work as a biomarker are introduced. In addition, the current methods of detecting lactoferrin have been presented and discussed. We hope that this review will inspire efforts in the development of new sensing systems for LF detection.

Its participation in apoptotic processes in cancer cells, its ability to modulate various reactions of the immune system, and its activity against a broad spectrum of pathogenic microorganisms, including respiratory viruses, have made it a protein of broad interest in pharmaceutical and food research and industry. In this review, we have focused on describing the most important functions of lactoferrin and the possible mechanisms of action that lead to its function.

Abstract:Human milk is universally regarded as the gold standard to fulfill nutrition needs of infants. Lactoferrin (LF) is a major multiple bioactive glycoprotein in human milk but little is presented in infant formula. LF can resist digestion in the infant gastrointestinal tract and is absorbed into the bloodstream in an intact form to perform physiological functions. Evidence suggest that LF prevents pathogen infection, promotes immune system development, intestinal development, brain development and bone health, as well as ameliorates iron deficiency anemia. However, more clinical studies of LF need to be further elucidated to determine an appropriate dosage for application in infant formula. LF is sensitive to denaturation induced by processing of infant formula such as heat treatments and spay drying. Thus, further studies should be focus on maximizing the retention of LF activity in the infant formula process. This review summarizes the structural features of LF. Then the digestion, absorption and metabolism of LF in infants are discussed, followed by the function of LF for infants. Further, we summarize LF in infant formula and effects of processing of infant formula on bioactivities of LF, as well as future perspectives of LF research.

Abstract:Lactoferrin (LF), a glycoprotein found in mucosal secretions, is characterized by a wide range of functions, including immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory activities. Moreover, several investigations confirmed that LF displays high effectiveness against multiple bacteria and viruses and may be regarded as a potential inhibitor of enveloped viruses, such as presently prevailing SARS-CoV-2. In our review, we discuss available studies about LF functions and bioavailability of different LF forms in in vitro and in vivo models. Moreover, we characterize the potential benefits and side effects of LF use; we also briefly summarize the latest clinical trials examining LF application. Finally, we point potential role of LF in inflammatory bowel disease and indicate its use as a marker for disease severity.
