Status of bacterial contamination of bedside curtains in some hospitals of Shanghai

Abstract:OBJECTIVE To understand the status of bacterial contamination of bedside curtains of ICUs and common wards in some general hospitals of Shanghai so as to reduce the rate of bacterial contamination of bedside curtains .METHODS A total of 120 bedside curtains specimens were collected from 8 hospitals by using standard cotton swab wiping method and were spread on the blood and MRSA agar plates ,then the samples were uniformly submitted to the clinical microbiological laboratory of Zhongshan Hospital ,the growth of pathogens on the plates was observed after 48 hours of culture in 35℃condition ,the bacterial colony counts on the plates were recorded , and the suspected pathogens or opportunistic pathogens were identified by using VITEK MS .RESULTS Of the 120 bedside curtains samples ,48 were collected from the ICUs ,and 72 were collected from the common wards .The qualified rate (<10CFU/100 cm2 )of the collected samples was 45 .8% in the ICUs ,6 .9% in the common wards (P<0 .01);the rate of severe contamination (≥50 CFU/100 cm2 ) was 12 .5% in the ICUs ,44 .4% in the com‐mon wards (P<0 .01) .The rate of bacterial contamination (≥10 CFU/100 cm2 )of the bedside curtains of the ICUs that were cleaned within one week was 25 .0% ,significantly lower than 68 .8% of the bedside curtains of the ICUs that were not cleaned for more than one week ,and there was statistically significant difference (P<0 .05) . Totally 342 strains of pathogens have been isolated from the bedside curtains samples ,of which 40 .3% (138 strains) were the coagulase‐negative Staphylococcus (CNS) ,followed by the Micrococcus luteus/lira micrococcus ( 71 strains ,20 .8% ) and bacillus ( 48 strains ,14 .0% ) .CONCLUSIONS The rate of bacterial contamination of the bedside curtains is significantly lower in the ICUs than in the common wards .The CNS and gram‐positive bacilli are most common among the bacteria causing the contamination , and regular cleaning can significantly reduce the contamination rate .
