Abstract:In this paper, a comparative analysis of the three-level NPC and ANPC converter loss distribution are presented. Switching states and commutation principle of two topologies are analyzed and compared; Also, the loss distribution mathematical model of the two topologies has been established. The main feature of the three-level ANPC structure is to use the switching devices to replace the clamp diodes of the three-level NPC topology, by selecting the different zero voltage state. As a result, it can realize the loss distribution balance among the power devices. Then, the simulation results are shown the effectiveness of the three-level ANPC topology as it can realize the power devices loss equalize under different work conditions, and verified the validity of the proposed loss distribution mathematical model.

Abstract:The DC voltage generated by fuel cell changes dramatically with the variable loads.To obtain the steady and reliable DC voltage,Power Control Unit(PCU) should be used.The voltage-fed full bridge Phased-shifted ZVS DC/DC converter was chose as the front-end DC/DC converter in fuel cell power system.The main design consideration is proposed,and loss dissipation is calculated.Finally,the experimental results on 5kW prototype validate the analysis mentioned above.

Abstract:Evaluating the power loss in power semiconductors is an important step in the process of research, development and design of a power electronics circuit topology. This paper presents a way of doing this via computer simulation. It is based on relatively simple component models and a fast simulation tool, but can quite precisely estimate the loss in power semiconductors, including conduction loss, switching loss and loss caused by diode reverse recovery. Several different continuous-conduction-mode (CCM) single-phase power factor correction (PFC) topologies are studied with this simulation approach. The losses in the semiconductors and subsequently the efficiency of different topologies are evaluated and extensively compared. The simulation results reveal quantitative insight of the power losses in different topologies and also verify that this simulation approach is faster and more cost-effective than numerical calculation or experimental measurement approach.

Abstract:The reversible solid oxide fuel cell (RSOFC) is a promising solution for future storage system in power grid, but the wide voltage range makes it difficult to design the DC/DC converter for RSOFC stack. In this paper, the losses of two DC/DC topologies, CLLC cascade interleaved Buck(two-stage) converter and dual-active-bridge(DAB) converter, are compared as the interface DC/DC converter for RSOFC. Firstly, the topology and control method is introduced for two selected DC/DC converters. Secondly, the losses of two converters are analyzed and corresponding loss models are presented. The loss models are also extended for multi-port topology. At last based on 1kW single port prototype, the experiments are conducted and the total loss are measured for two topologies. Both the model and experimental results indicate that the two-stage topology has higher efficiency and is selected for the interface DC/DC converter for RSOFC stack.

Abstract:The power-electronics converters are increasingly applied in modern power system, which contains various sub-systems, such as renewable energy power plants and high voltage direct current transmission systems, etc. The electromagnetic transient simulation has been one of the important tools for the study of complex system containing large numbers of power converters. The coordination control of the power converters and corresponding power generation and load units is one of the challenges ensuring stability and obtaining optimal efficiency. However, the detailed modeling of the power converters considering the conduction and switching losses can cost a great number of computation resources, which makes it difficult to simulate a large system. This work proposed a current injection method for converter power loss representation, which can accurately consider the conduction and switching losses of the power-electronics switches with low computation complexity. A look-up table (LUT) of the power loss ratio is calculated before the simulation, and a current source representing the power loss is connected in parallel with the converter to track the reference loss generated by the look-up table. The proposed method can be combined with multiple converter modeling schemes, such as the two-resistance model, the switching-function model, and the average value model, etc. The topologies of the two-level converter and the modular multi-level converter (MMC) were used in the case studies to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. Compared to the device-level model, the simulation power loss deviation is 0.64% and 4.13% applying the current injection method model in the case studies of the two-level converter and the MMC.

Abstract:The performances in circuit loss of an interleaved dual Boost high power derect-curent to derectcurent (DC-DC) converters were analyzed by using Si devices or/and SiC devices in a fuel cell vehicle to regulate and control the output voltage and output power.The circuit losses and efficiency in the whole SiC devices (i.e.SiC Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor Field-Effect Transistor,MSOFET and SiC diode) converter,hybrid devices (i.e.SiC MOSFET and Si diode) converter and the whole Si devices (i.e.Si Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor,IGBT and Si diode) converter were compared base on circuit loss numerical calculation and efficiency simulation.The results show that the Si IGBT losses are 3 times for switching on and 10 times for switching off as that of SiC MOSFET and the efficiencies of All-SiC devices are 1％～3.1％ higher than All-Si devices in different conditions.Therefore,the SiC devices can improve the power density,reliability and efficiency of the power system for high power DC-DC converters.

Abstract:This paper proposes a power loss calculation method that can rapidly evaluate converter performance under various system specifications. A graph-based path search algorithm is proposed to identify all current paths within the given converter. Next, a universal program based on current path modeling is developed, which is used to estimate the loss of switching devices under a given converter output current. Furthermore, the steady-state operating waveforms of the converter are obtained using frequency domain analysis, thereby reducing the calculation time. Finally, this method is verified with simulation based on active neutral-point clamped (ANPC) converters. The comparison result indicates that the relative error between the calculated and simulated power losses remains below ±2.5% in the current range of 60A to 150A, while achieving a speed improvement of more than 50 times.

Abstract:Switched reluctance motor system is a novel electromagnetic system with good application prospects. The loss from the power converter is one of the main issues for the design and operation of the system. In this paper, the methods to calculate the power loss of the power converter in switched reluctance motor drive are introduced. The simulation model for the whole system is built, which can calculate the power loss of every power MOSFET. Then the influences of the parameters, such as PWM duty cycle, frequency, motor speed, and turn off angle, on the device power loss are analyzed. At last, the device junction temperature is presented.

Abstract:An improved switching loss calculation method for IGBT switching on, switching off and the diode reverse recovery energy losses in neutral point clamped inverter is proposed in this paper. A model of linear instantaneous switching on and off waveforms is presented to approximate actual switching process. The IGBT switching on and off duration, the changing rates of current di/dt and collector-emitter voltage dv/dt all can be calculated at different load currents with the given IGBT parameters. Besides, the proposed method is apparently different from the linear waveform method used before which assuming switching time to be a constant value. In addition, compared with the traditional mathematical equation that uses measured data to fit a formula, the equation proposed here is based on physical model and it can indicate the relationship between gate drive resistor, the IGBT capacitance, trans-conductance and switching process. An inverter employing a switching pattern as sinusoidal PWM (SPWM) was designed and experiment was carried out to test the switching waveforms under different output currents. Switching loss under different currents was also measured and compared with calculated value using mathematical equation proposed in this paper.

Abstract:In electric vehicle systems, bi-directional DC/DC converters are used to interface the battery bank with the high voltage DC bus of the inverter. The high power density and high efficiency are required for bidirectional DC/DC converters. This paper discusses the relationship between switching frequency, inductor value and passive components volume. First, the topologies of the system and the converter are presented. Then, the loss breakdown model is provided. A selection for the switching frequency is presented and an option of inductor value is provided to reduce the converter size and to keep the converter efficient. Then the converter layout which further enhances the power density is discussed. Finally, a high power density and high efficiency converter prototype is built, and the efficiency and thermal performance evaluation of the converter at different operating conditions is given.

Abstract:In this study, an Interleaved Boost Converter constructed with six cascade parallel connected phases is proposed for Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV). Silicon Carbide (SiC) semiconductors are selected help gain high efficiency, high compactness and better thermal ability. Inverse coupled inductors are used to reduce the volume, weight and core losses of magnetic components. The proposed topology reduces significantly the AC amplitude of fuel cell current and therefore the operating life of the Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC) can be extended. Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) real-time emulation of the proposed converter has been addressed. Finally, a 1kW prototype of the proposed converter has been established and experiments have been launched for the validation. Depending on theoretical comparison analysis, HIL real-time verification and experimental validation, the PEMFC system combined with the proposed converter can own high reliability, high system efficiency and high compactness.

Abstract:To increase the fuel efficiency and reduce pollution emission at the time hybrid electric vehicle(HEV) car starts,HEV converter should have the ability to supply energy with low output voltage.A new bi-directional DC-DC converter was proposed for not only high output voltage but also low output voltage.The converter can work on both buck mode and boost mode to meet the varied output voltage requirement.Then,the parameters design of the converter was made with the detailed specification.And the loss distribution of the converter with different conditions was estimated.Finally,the efficiency of converter is verified in the experiments.

Abstract:This study analyzes and compares the drivetrain losses of two methods of fuel cell integration in electric vehicle drivetrains. The first is a conventional (boosted) two-stage system while the second is a dual inverter based solution. Each source of drivetrain losses is described by mathematical equations and the impact of higher order harmonics are observed through circuit model simulation. The dual inverter system achieves an overall energy efficiency improvement of 5.27% and 10.13% for highway and urban driving compared to the conventional method. The use of lower voltage rated power modules and lower switching frequency in the dual inverter system has significantly reduced the switching losses and improved the driving efficiency.

Abstract:In this paper, the power loss performance of three-level active neutral-point-clamped (3L-ANPC) converter when providing short circuit current are analyzed and compared under four typical modulation schemes (i.e., PWM-1 scheme, PWM-2 scheme, PWM-3 scheme and DF-PWM scheme). Furthermore, the junction temperature distribution of 3L-ANPC converter under different grid voltage dip depths are studied. Meanwhile, taking the junction temperature of the hottest device as the limit, the short-circuit current capability under different modulation modes is obtained. Finally, the short-circuit current capability under different modulation schemes is verified by simulation results.

Abstract:Dual-active-bridge (DAB) DC–DC converters are of great interest for DC–DC conversion in battery electric vehicle (BEV) powertrain applications. There are two versions of DAB DC–DC converters: single-phase (1p) and three-phase (3p) architectures. Many studies have compared these architectures, selecting the 3p topology as the most efficient. However, there is a gap in the literature when comparing both architectures when single-phase-shift (SPS) modulation is not used to drive the converter. The aim of this study was to compare 1p and 3p DAB DC–DC converters driven by optimal modulation techniques appropriate for BEV powertrain applications. Mathematical loss models were derived for both architectures, and their performances were compared. A case study of a 100 kW converter was considered as an example to visualize the overall efficiency of the converter for each layout. The 1p DAB DC–DC converter architecture outperformed the 3p layout in both its Y–Y and D–D transformer configurations. The higher performance efficiency, lower number of components, and reduced design complexity make the 1p DAB DC–DC converter topology a favorable choice for BEV powertrain applications.

Abstract:The C-filter LCC resonant converter operating in discontinuous conducting mode(DCM) can realize soft-switching easily and has valued features such as high reliability and efficiency.Also,the C-filter LCC resonant converter has a good voltage regulation ability and no inductor is needed in the output side,making it suitable for high power and high voltage applications.However,there lacks a method to analyze and calculate the IGBT power losses,which is essential for heat sink design.This paper analyzes the inverter losses of the C-filter LCC resonant converter which is operating in DCM.A method to calculate the power losses of the switches is also given based on the closed-form function of the resonant current and the characteristics of the IGBT.Finally,a DC/DC 3.6 kV/0.3 A C-filter LCC resonant converter is taken as an example.The experimental results are given to verify the proposed analysis.

Abstract:The power loss of switching devices is a major source of heat in the main circuit of the converter. The loss of too many switching devices will lead to an increase in device temperature, a decrease in system performance and even a converter failure, so the estimation of the power loss of switching devices is very important. For the active neutral point clamped (ANPC) wind power converter based on IGCT, the numerical calculation model of the power loss of IGCT is first established, and then the simulation calculation model of the power loss of ANPC is established in this paper. Finally, the loss analysis of ANPC under different power factors, different current flow directions, different modulation strategies, and different switching frequencies is carried out to provide references for the selection of power electronic devices, the determination of switching frequency, and the design of heat dissipation.

Abstract:Current-fed bidirectional dc-dc converters have attracted much attention in battery energy storage system applications due to their zero-voltage-switching performances and greater degree of control freedom. However, high efficiency cannot be achieved for both light and heavy load ranges with the present modulation schemes for a current-fed bidirectional dc-dc converter, especially with low battery voltages. A new modulation scheme is proposed to improve the conversion efficiency over a wide load range and with variations in the battery voltage. The relationship between the duty cycle of the secondary full bridge and the phase-shift angle was investigated to lower the power losses with the wide load variations. Based on the operation mode analysis, the control loop with the proposed pulse wide modulation plus phase-shift modulation scheme was developed. Comparisons of the switch conduction loss and the core loss in the series inductor for the previous modulation schemes and the proposed modulation scheme were carried out. The results show that lower power losses occur with the proposed scheme. The experimental results verify the theoretical analysis and effectiveness of the proposed modulation scheme on loss reduction.
Power Loss Analysis and Optimization of Three-Level T-type Converter Based on Hybrid Devices

Abstract:This paper details the loss model of T-type converter using an improved method which is quite simple. The method utilizes the current and voltage information from simulation model in which the impact of the PWM methods, dead time and devices on the power losses are involved. Thus, the influences of different PWM methods and devices are analysed. Based on the results, a low-voltage three phase 10kW T-type inverter equipped with hybrid devices is implemented. Results show that the discontinuous SVPWM (DPWM1) achieves higher efficiency than continuous SVPWM. Based on the loss distribution of the devices in the bridge, the hybrid device combination of CoolMOS/FWD as main switch and IGBT/SiC diode as auxiliary switches are utilized in the prototype. It can exploit the potential of these devices. The maximum efficiency of the prototype reaches at 99.2% at 20 kHz switching frequency.
