Abstract:Long term corrosion test data in marine environments are essential data to guide the design and application of marine engineering. Corrosion test results, over a 16 year period from October 1986 to October 2002, using eight kinds of metallic materials are reported in this paper. Materials were exposed in the splash zone, tidal zone, and full immersion zone of four corrosion test stations located in Qingdao, Zhoushan, Xiamen and Yulin respectively, and therefore the corrosion behaviour of various ferrous and non-ferrous materials in these marine environments has been obtained. The corrosion of carbon steel in the seawater fits the following general relationship: D=A+K(t-1). The variation in the general corrosion rates for the different carbon steels in seawater is relatively small and consistent. However, the pitting corrosion rates for the different carbon steels are all significantly different. The marine splash zone is about 0-2.4 m above the mean high water level of the seawater. The corrosion peak was located about 0.6 to 1.2 m above the mean high water level. The order of the corrosion potential of stainless steels with the corrosion resistance of stainless steels is consistent in seawater. The corrosion of copper was found to be serious in the full immersion zone of the Yulin sea area. The effective lifetime of the cathodic protection for a wrapped aluminising layer of the hard and ultrahard aluminium may be 16 years.

Abstract:Since the period required for testing the atmospheric corrosion of steel is long, most studies have focused on the corrosion behavior in less than three years, making exploring long-term atmospheric corrosion particularly valuable. This study investigates the corrosion behaviors, corrosion models, and mechanical properties of Q235 welded steel pipes collapsing due to corrosion after 25-year service in an urban industrial atmospheric environment using SEM, XRD, electrochemical methods, 3-D noncontact surface profilometry, and static tensile testing. The typical morphologies of & alpha;-FeOOH, & gamma;-FeOOH, and Fe3O4 and the effect of the content of various corrosive materials on the corrosion rate of the steel pipes are identified and analyzed. Then, the influence of different corrosion degrees on the mechanical properties of the steel pipes is examined by considering the morphologies of the rust pits. The results show that the wetting-drying cycles affect the structures of the rust layers and their protective properties. The rust layers on the sheltered surface are thicker but less protective than those on the exposed surface. In the wet state, FeSO4 accelerates ion transfer, while Fe3O4 facilitates electron transfer. These processes collectively contribute to the corrosion of Q235 steel. Moreover, as the time-of-wetness of the rust layers on sheltered specimens increases, the corrosion rate of Q235 steel also accelerates. The corrosion model combines pitting and uniform corrosion and gradually changes from predominated by pitting to thickness as the corrosion degree increases. The corrosion morphology impacts the mechanical properties of the welded steel pipes, and the influences of the thickness loss and maximum rust pit depth on these properties are profound.

Abstract:The corrosion performances of the EH 36 carbon steel in stagnant and flowing natural sea water and synthetic sea waters were investigated. Results show that the general corrosion rates of the steels are close in stagnant natural sea water and synthetic sea waters. The corrosion rate, corrosion feature and the rust components of the steels in flowing 3.5% NaCl solution were significantly different from those of the steels in flowing natural sea water, indicating 3.5% NaCl solution could not restore the flow accelerated corrosion (FAC) performance of carbon steels in marine environment. The pH difference between 3.5% NaCl solution and natural sea water is not the main contributor for FAC performance changing. The corrosion performance of the steel in ASTM D1141 synthetic sea water was similar to that in natural sea water within small deviations of the corrosion rate at both static and flowing conditions.

Abstract:The commercial hot-dip galvanized sheet steel was investigated for its corrosion behavior in three different seawater zones in Qingdao with electrochemical measurement,weight loss test and SEM.The results indicated that zinc coating exposed to immersion zone dissolved quickly due to high corrosion current density and being hard to form a stable protective film resulting from the corrosion itself,i.e.,galvanized steel under such conditions is the poorest one in corrosion resistance.Biofouling often takes place on galvanized steel surface exposed to tidal zone,which may result in partial protection to coating surface at obviously lower corrosion rate than the coupons in immersion zone.The splash zone is the least aggressive of all the seawater zones for galvanized steel with biofouling not occurring.The lowest corrosion rate of galvanized steel in splash zone may relate to the good air ventilation condition on coating surface and the protective film resulting from the oxidation itself.In comparison to the test coupons in immersion zone,the corrosion resistance of those in tidal and splash zones increases by 37% and 94%,respectively.

Abstract:Through exposure corrosion test in seawater for 16 years,the “reversion” phenomena of corrosion resistance of containing chromium low alloy steels such as 921 in Yulin and Qingdao seawater were first found in China,but the reason was not understood at home and abroad.In order to study the reason of “reversion”,several methods including metallography,SEM/EDS,bacteria identification and chemical analysis were used for entirely investigating the rust layer on test steels and the rust layer on 921 steel exposed in Yulin seawater was emphasized on.The reason of corrosion resistance “reversion” of some containing chromium low alloy steels in seawater has been initially found out.As the seawater corroded for a long period,the corrosion pits deeply developed and many small metal granules fell off substrate,that greatly contributed to corrosion rate.“Falling off” containing chromium steels was much serious than carbon steels and non-containing chromium steel.It is considered that the corrosion dynamic of carbon steels and low alloy steels may change from oxygen diffusion control to bacteria such as SRB corrosion control at about one year.

Abstract:A comparative investigation of hot dip Zn-25Al alloy, Zn-55Al-Si and Zn coatings on steel was performed with attention to their corrosion performance in seawater. The results of 2-year exposure testing of these at Zhoushan test site are reported here. In tidal and immersion environments, Zn-25Al alloy coating is several times more durable than zinc coating of double thickness. At long exposure times, corrosion rate for the Zn-25Al alloy coating remains indistinguishable from that for the Zn-55Al-Si coating of similar thickness in tidal zone, and is two to three times lower than the latter in immersion zone. The decrease in tensile strength suggested that galvanized and Zn-55Al-Si coated steel suffer intense pitting corrosion in immersion zone. The electrochemical tests showed that all these coatings provide cathodic protection to the substrate metal; the galvanic potentials are equal to −1,050, −1,025 and −880 mV (SCE) for zinc, Zn-25Al alloy and Zn-55Al-Si coating, respectively, which are adequate to keep the steel inside the immunity region. It is believed that the superior performance of the Zn-25Al alloy coating is due to its optimal combination of the uniform corrosion resistance and pitting corrosion resistance. The inferior corrosion performance by comparison of the Zn coating mainly results from its larger dissolution rate, while the failure of the Zn-55Al-Si coating is probably related to its higher susceptibility to pitting corrosion in seawater.

Abstract:Carbon steels are widely used in ocean engineering due to their cost effectiveness, ease of manufacture, and excellent weldability. However, the attachment of macro-fouling organisms in seawater poses a serious threat to the integrity of carbon steel structures. In this experiment, carbon steel plates were immersed in the Dalian Sea area from January to October to investigate the effects of macro-fouling on corrosion propagation. The electrochemical measurement indicated that the propensity for the corrosion of Q235B is ranked as ascidians > mussels > barnacles. The characterization results indicated that various marine organisms significantly influenced the corrosion behavior of Q235B carbon steel immersed in natural seawater. The colonization of barnacles inhibited corrosion at the barnacle central area, and the presence of barnacle covering caused crevice corrosion at the edges of the barnacle due to oxygen concentration cells. The presence of ascidians resulted in general corrosion due to the locally high conductivity and ion diffusion rate. A relatively compact rust layer, which exhibited localized defects, was observed beneath the mussels. Seawater had the ability to penetrate the rust layer through these defects, leading to the formation of pitting corrosion on the metal substrate.

Abstract:Purpose To study the corrosion behavior of pipeline steel in coastal areas, a tidal seawater macro-cell corrosion device was built using a cycle soaking tank and a macro-cell corrosion facility to simulate the corrosion behavior of pipeline steel in a simulated coastal environment (dry and wet alternations during seawater-soil corrosion macro-cell processes). Design/methodology/approach The corrosion behaviors were studied via the weight loss method, electrochemical methods and morphological observations on corrosion. Findings The results show that during the initial stage of tidal seawater/soil macro-cell corrosion process of the X65 steel, the working electrode on the seawater side is the anode of the macro-battery. As corrosion progresses, the anode and the cathode of the macro-battery become inverted. As the area ratio and the dry – wet ratio increase, the time of anode and cathode inversion shortens. Galvanic current density decreases as the dry – wet ratio increases and increases as the area ratio increases. The corrosion process of macro-cell is affected by the reversal of anode and cathode. After the reversal of anode and cathode, the corrosion rate is mainly controlled by dry – wet alternating corrosion. Originality/value The corrosion behavior of a pipeline steel in a coastal environment was studied using a tidal seawater macro-cell corrosion device. The synergism effect between the tidal seawater and seawater-soil macro-cell on corrosion behavior was clarified.

Abstract:In this paper, a tide simulation device was used to study the marine tidal corrosion of Q235 steel with scanning electron microscopy (SEM), ultra-depth 3D microscopy, and in situ electrochemical measurements. The results showed that the corrosion rates of the steel in the full immersion (FI) zone were low and fluctuated slightly, while the corrosion rates of the steel in the other zones were relatively high and increased from the 192nd h. The order of corrosion rates from high to low was middle tide (MT) zone, high tide (HT) zone, low tide (LT) zone, and FI zone. Uniform corrosion dominated the corrosion process of the steel in the FI zone, while corrosion pits were generated on the steel surface in the HT, MT, and LT zones during the experiment. The corrosion mechanism of the steel in marine tidal zones was discussed in the paper.

Abstract:In order to meet the development needs of deep-sea oil and gas resources, deep-sea corrosion coupon tests were carried out in the South China Sea, the Western Pacific Ocean, and the Indian Ocean, which can provide a strong guarantee for the rationality of material selection of oil and gas pipelines, platforms and other facilities. In-depth studies were conducted on the environmental adaptability of typical carbon steel and low alloy steel materials after exposure for one year in the deep-sea environment of different sea areas. The main environmental factors affecting deep-sea corrosion behavior were also collected and analyzed. The results showed that the corrosion morphology of carbon steel and low alloy steel in deep sea environment was more uniform than that in the shallow seawater. With the increase of seawater depth, the evolution law of their corrosion rates in different sea areas was similar, with an obvious decline of corrosion rate in the beginning. The gray correlation results indicated that it was mainly controlled by temperature and dissolved oxygen. The high hydrostatic pressure had limited effect on accelerating the deep sea corrosion rate of carbon steel and low alloy steel, but it promoted the formation of more uniform corrosion morphology.

Abstract:Marine tidal zone is a corrosive environment that has a negative impact on carbon steel. This research investigates the change of mechanical properties and corrosion behaviour of carbon steel specimens subjected to field exposure test and simulation test for 12 and 6 months, respectively. The corrosion behaviour of carbon steel exposed to real marine tidal zone and simulation environment was discussed through morphological observation and corrosion kinetics analysis, in order to reveal the essential reason for the degradation of its mechanical properties. Then the tensile test was performed on the corroded specimens and true stress–strain curves were obtained. In addition, regression equations were derived for the mechanical properties as a function of the degree of corrosion degradation and a constitutive model with time factor for corroded carbon steel is proposed.

Abstract:The corrosion behaviors of three bridge steels in a real tropical marine environment for 2 years were studied. One weathering steel (WS) was designed with higher levels of nickel, copper, and molybdenum compared to the other. These two kinds of WSs and one kind of ordinary high-strength low-alloy steel (Q345qe) were compared under two conditions (marine atmospheric zone and marine immersion zone at Sanya Marine Environmental Test Station). The morphology, corrosion rate, and corrosion product analysis of the steels were performed through SEM, XPS, FTIR and other characterization methods. The results demonstrated that weathering steels facilitate the densification of the corrosion product layer due to the addition of alloying elements Cr, Ni, and Cu, promoting rust nucleation and enhancing the compactness of the protective layer. However, in an immersion environment, the extensive erosion by chloride ions renders the benefits of WS ineffective.

Abstract:Corrosion behaviour of carbon steel (CS) exposed in the tidal zone of Beibu Gulf was investigated by experimental method. Q235 CS specimens were designed and exposed for 12 months. The corrosion mechanism of CS was characterised by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and X-Ray diffraction (XRD). Results show that the corrosion performance of CS can be verified by the formula D = at(n). The corrosion products are mainly composed of alpha-FeOOH, gamma-FeOOH, beta-FeOOH, Fe3O4 and gamma-Fe2O3. Significantly, Cl- is an intermediate in the corrosion process and promotes the formation of the characteristic product beta-FeOOH.

Abstract:Open-circuit potential (OCP), polarization curve, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurement were used to investigate the corrosion behaviors of high-strength low-alloy (HSLA) steel and mild steel in seawater. Both steels were used in the construction of a huge oil storage tank. The OCP results show that the HSLA steel quickly reached more negative E (OCP) values than the mild steel. Polarization curve results reveal that the HSLA steel exhibits higher corrosion currents and more negative corrosion potentials than the mild steel. EIS measurements reveal that both steels exhibit similar corrosion behaviors up to 144 h, one increased capacitance loop can be shown in EIS diagrams. The mild steel presents higher corrosion resistances than the HSLA steel at former stage, which is associated with the effect of the grain size. After 240 h of immersion, both steels present different corrosion behaviors. The EIS diagrams exhibit two capacitance arcs for the HSLA steel and one capacitance arc for the mild steel, which is due to the formation of intact corrosion scales on the electrode surface of the HSLA steel as to introduce a new reaction interface. The HSLA steel exhibits higher corrosion resistances than the mild steel at latter stage of experiment, which is ascribed to the synthetic actions of residual Fe3C and the protective property of corrosion products.

Abstract:The atmospheric corrosion kinetics of low carbon steel exposed for up to 36 months in marine and industrial sites was studied by weight loss measurements. The results show that the mechanism and kinetics of the atmospheric corrosion process presents transition behaviour in marine environments with high chloride ion content and high relative humidity, whereas no transition appears in industrial environment. The average corrosion velocity in marine site reaches a maximum during the period of transition and then fluctuates in a certain range; however, the instantaneous corrosion velocity follows different exponential functions before and after the period of transition.

Abstract:With the continuous tightening marine diesel engines emission standards, removing sulfur oxides (SOX) by sodium hydroxide solution absorption is a highly efficiency and economic method, which has been a hot area of research. The ensuing desulfurization solution is a new corrosive system, the aim of this paper is to ascertain the corrosion feature of Q235B steel in desulfurization solution, which lays a theoretical foundation for industrialization. For this purpose, mass loss, electrochemical techniques and surface analyses were applied. The results of mass loss highlight a reduction in the corrosion rate with 35 days of immersion. Higher exposure time increased the compactness of the corrosion product layer and changed phase composition. These conclusions are supported by surface analyses, such as X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscope. However, electrochemical results showed that the polarization resistance Rp was fluctuant. Both of Rp and charge transfer resistance Rt reach a maximum after immersing 21 days. In addition, although the sediments attached to the steel surface could inhibit corrosion, pitting corrosion aggravated by hydrolyzation of FeSO4 should be given more attention.

Abstract:The application of high-strength steels in marine engineering is gaining importance because of their high performance and ability to help save resources. However, detailed and systematic information about the corrosion behavior of high-strength steels in different marine corrosion zones is still limited. This study aimed to investigate and compare the corrosion behavior of AISI 4135 high-strength steel in marine atmospheric, splash, tidal, and immersion zones, focusing on rust layer characteristics, corrosion form and electrochemical corrosion behavior. Corrosion exposure experiments were performed in a specific sea area, and the recovered steel samples were characterized by Raman spectroscopy, confocal laser scanning microscopy, nitrogen adsorption analysis, etc. Results showed that the rust layer formed on the surface of the steel in all corrosion zones had component delamination. The steel samples in the atmospheric, splash, and tidal zones were characterized by pitting corrosion, where the average depths of the corrosion pits were 56.1 ± 4.7 μm, 199.5 ± 12.6 μm, 108.1 ± 11.0 μm, respectively, whereas those in the immersion zone were characterized by general corrosion. Meanwhile, electrochemical tests were performed on the electrode samples during exposure. Results showed that the corrosion of the steel progressed from slow to fast in the atmospheric, splash, and tidal zones, whereas it was relatively steady in the immersion zone. Differentiated models of the corrosion evolution of steel under wet-dry cycle and immersion conditions were presented. This discrepancy is related to the varying degrees of accumulation of ionic corrosion products at the metal/oxide interface, which are determined by the mean pore access diameter of the rust layer and the corrosion environment. This study is highly significant for the design of marine engineering considering the safety applications of high-strength steel structures in harsh marine environments.

Abstract:Experiments to simulate the corrosion of a mild steel (designated A(3)) in the open sea have been conducted to explain observed differences between the behaviour of suspended specimens that were electrically connected together oil the one hand and unconnected on the other. Reasons for differences between the corrosion behaviour of individually suspended specimens in the laboratory and that of steel in a marine service environment have also been investigated. The effect on corrosion of the ratio of water depth in the tidal zone to that in the immersion zone has also been studied.
