Abstract:Functionalized magnetic nanomaterials, composed of both organic and inorganic components, have recently been identified as promising solid-phase extraction adsorbents for various applications. Due to their superparamagnetic property, large specific surface area, as well as selective adsorption capacity, this unique class of nanomaterials exhibits an excellent performance in extracting and enriching numerous targeted analytes. This review mainly focuses on the recent advances in the synthesis and application of functionalized magnetic nanomaterials for the preconcentration of organic pollutants in environmental analysis. The development of three kinds of magnetic solid-phase adsorbents, including magnetic polymer nanomaterials, magnetic hybrid nanomaterials and magnetic mesoporous nanomaterials, are elaborated in this review.

Abstract:Abstract: With the increasing shortage of water resources and the improvement of people's awareness of environmental protection, the traditional water pollution control technology cannot meet the needs of the development of environmental protection. In recent years, the rapid development of nanotechnology and nanomaterials has provided a good opportunity for the innovation of water treatment technology, and has attracted extensive attention of many environmental researchers. In particular, new functional magnetic nanomaterials with good adsorption properties, good chemical stability, easy regeneration and easy solid-liquid separation have become hot topics in the field of water pollution control. This paper aims to provide the present research progress of magnetic nanomaterials in water pollution control, including the striking characteristics and preparation methods of the most well-known magnetic nanomaterials, as well as their applications in water pollution control field. Concluding remarks and future trends are also pointed out.

Abstract:Pollutants detection and water purification are very important to achieve environmental protection and resource utilization. It has become increasingly important and urgent to fabricate novel environmentally–friendly materials to remove various pollutants. Recently, magnetic chitosan–based materials (M-CSbMs) with abundant reactive –NH 2 and –OH groups have been extensively used as adsorbents and photocatalysts for environmental remediation due to its high activity, green sources, biodegradability, and low cost. In this review, several reliable preparation strategies ( in-situ strategy, two-step strategy, and post-deposition strategy) of M-CSbMs are summarized. In-depth discussions regarding the parameters affecting the practical potential of M-CSbMs are highlighted in detail. Importantly, the review focused on the applications of M-CSbMs in effective removal and magnetic solid-phase extraction for contaminants, such as heavy metal ions, organic dyes, antibiotics, and other pollutants. Finally, the current challenges and prospects of M-CSbMs are provided with the expectation to boost their practical application in water purification and solid-phase extraction of contaminants.

Abstract:Nanotechnology is an emerging technique drawing increasing attentions in biomedical, electronic, environmental, and industrial application. Nanoparticles (NPs) possess unique optical, electrical, catalytic, and thermal properties, among which magnetic NPs (MNPs) are one of the most important groups with excellent superparamagnetism property, large surface area, and biocompatibility. In this review, methods for synthesizing and functionalizing MNPs are summarized and linked to their applications in environmental science as either adsorbents or catalysts for removing contaminants from environmental matrices, illustrating stronger reactivity, higher removal capacity, and fast kinetics. Additionally, we also comprehensively discuss the application of MNPs as (bio)sensors to selectively and sensitively detect the presence of environmental contaminants or pathogenic bacteria. This work summarizes the recent progresses of using MNPs as powerful tools in environmental science and engineering, raising their state-of-art application from environmental perspectives and benefiting researchers interested in NPs and environmental studies.

Abstract:Magnetic separation is based on the exertion of a magnetic field to selectively collect the magnetic responsive materials. With the development of nanotechnology, magnetic separations based on nanomaterials have found various applications largely benefited from the size effect and synthetic advancement in their preparation. In this review the synthetic methods for the preparation of magnetic iron oxide (Fe3O4) nanoparticles including co-precipitation, hydrothermal and solvothermal synthesis, microemulsion, and sonochemical hydrolysis are discussed. Problems related to the nanoparticle preparation such as broad size distribution, easy aggregation and difficulties in surface functionalization are summarized and directions for improvement are pointed out. Furthermore, a summary on the application of magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles in water treatment is given including heavy metal ions removal, residue pesticide determination and removal, absorption of toxic water soluble molecules, and oily water treatment, and their new application potential is addressed specifically as a novel draw agent for forward osmosis. Finally, the perspectives and problems related to the application of iron oxide nanoparticles in water treatment are given. Abstract:Magnetite nanoparticles (MNPs) have shown increasing application in the fields of water pollution control and detection due to their perfect combination of interfacial functionalities and physicochemical properties , such as surface interface adsorption, (synergistic) reduction, catalytic oxidation, and electrical chemistry. This review presents the research advances in the synthesis and modification methods of MNPs in recent years, systematically summarizes the performances of MNPs and their modified materials in terms of three technical systems, including single decontamination system, coupled reaction system, and electrochemical system. In addition, the progress of the key roles played by MNPs in adsorption, reduction, catalytic oxidative degradation and their coupling with zero-valent iron for the reduction of pollutants are described. Moreover, the application prospect of MNPs-based electrochemical working electrodes for detecting micro-pollutants in water were also discussed in detail. This review addresses that the construction of MNPs-based systems for water pollution control and detection should be adapted to the natures of the target pollutants in water. Finally, the following research directions of MNPs and their remaining challenges are outlooked. In general, this review will inspire MNPs researchers in different fields for effective control and detection of a variety of contaminants in water.

Abstract:Advanced porous nanomaterials such as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), covalent organic frameworks (COFs), and porous aromatic frameworks (PAFs) with high specific surface areas, abundant functional groups, accessible pore structures, tunable pore sizes, and easy modification are attractive as adsorbents for the capture of toxic heavy metal ions, organic pollutants, and radionuclides from aqueous solutions. This review first comprehensively introduces the attractive properties of MOFs, COFs, and PAFs to highlight their advantages as adsorbents. Subsequently, the recent progress of MOFs, COFs, and PAFs as superior adsorbents for the efficient removal of environmental pollutants is summarized. Furthermore, the influences of environmental conditions and information about the interaction mechanisms between pollutants and advanced porous nanomaterials are discussed. Finally, the applications and promising prospects of advanced porous nanomaterials in environmental pollution management are summarized. This review is beneficial to designing and fabricating advanced porous materials, which also provides some meaningful guidance for studying the adsorption mechanisms between porous materials and environmental pollutants.

Abstract:Water pollution is caused by heavy metals, minerals, and dyes. It has become a global environmental problem. There are numerous methods for removing different types of pollutants from wastewater. Adsorption is viewed as the most promising and financially viable option. Nanostructured materials are used as effective materials for adsorption techniques to extract metal ions from wastewater. Many types of nanomaterials, such as zero-valent metals, metal oxides, carbon nanomaterials, and magnetic nanocomposites, are used as adsorbents. Magnetic nanocomposites as adsorbents have magnetic properties and abundant active functional groups, and unique nanomaterials endow them with better properties than nonmagnetic materials (classic adsorbents). Nonmagnetic materials (classic adsorbents) typically have limitations such as limited adsorption capacity, adsorbent recovery, poor selective adsorption, and secondary treatment. Magnetic nanocomposites are easy to recover, have strong selectivity and high adsorption capacity, are safe and economical, and have always been a hotspot for research. A large amount of data has been collected in this review, which is based on an extensive study of the synthesis, characterization, and adsorption capacity for the elimination of ions from wastewater and their separation from water. The effects of several experimental parameters on metal ion removal, including contact duration, temperature, adsorbent dose, pH, starting ion concentration, and ionic strength, have also been investigated. In addition, a variety of illustrations are used to describe the various adsorption kinetics and adsorption isotherm models, providing insight into the adsorption process.

Abstract:Fe3O4@SiO2 core-shell structured nanoparticles are promising candidates for adsorption of heavy metal ions from waste water due to their high adsorption capacities and feasible recycling process. However, their practical applications have been hindered by the trade-off between the magnetic separation efficiency and durability. In this study, we demonstrate the preparation of amino-functionalized Fe3O4@SiO2 absorbents with both high magnetic separation efficiencies and durability in strong acidic environment. Our key strategy was to use a thin but highly protective silica layer by manipulating the sol-gel chemistry. With the protection of a thin but poorly permeable silica shell, the durability of the Fe3O4 in strong acid solution was significantly enhanced while its magnetic separation efficiency was maintained. We also demonstrated the adsorption of Cu2+ from aqueous solution corresponded well with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The adsorption capacity can be further improved by coating an additional layer of mesoporous SiO2 outside Fe3O4@SiO2. The design of highly durable magnetic absorbents without sacrificing the magnetic separation efficiency greatly facilitates the practical applications of magnetic nanoparticles in adsorption of heavy metal ions.

Abstract:As a result of serious pollution in the water environment, sewage disposal has been receiving a lot of attention from the water industry. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) attract a lot of interest in the adsorption and separation due to their complex structures and easily adjustable pore sizes. Magnetic MOFs inheriting the advantages of both large surface area and easy recovery have great potentials in the adsorption and separation of pollutants. This paper reviews the recent research progress on the adsorption and separation of ions, dyes and other contaminants by different types of MOFs (magnetic MOFs and non-magnetic MOFs) and their magnetic composites (Fe 3 O 4 @MOF) in aqueous environments. The factors affecting the adsorption of pollutants, and the thermodynamic and kinetic effects of adsorption are discussed with detailed examples. Finally, the challenges and opportunities for further development of magnetic MOFs are discussed and elucidated.

Among these materials, magnetic nanocarriers have emerged as a versatile and efficient means of immobilizing target pollutants for water decontamination. Their effectiveness stems from their expansive surface area, relatively straightforward fabrication, and diverse applications, particularly in environmental remediation processes. This comprehensive review aims to delve into the various classes of magnetic carriers and their roles in removing contaminants from water sources. Each class is examined critically, providing insights into synthesis methodologies, accompanied by noteworthy examples from the literature, and an exploration of the significant contributions these materials offer to the field. Through this review, we seek to provide a thorough understanding of the use of magnetic nanocarriers in addressing the crucial issue of water pollution and highlight their potential to play a pivotal role in achieving cleaner and more sustainable water resources for our growing population.

Abstract:Owing to their widely available source materials, simple magnetic separation, and low cost, magnetic catalysts have demonstrated considerable application potential in modern photocatalysis technologies and environmental remediation. This review summarizes the synthesis and modification methods of magnetic catalysts and describes recent advances using different synthesis methods. Several key problems still need to be solved in the existing progress, such as the fact that the catalytic activity of magnetic catalysts decreases over time. Under an external magnetic field, magnetic catalysts exhibit satisfactory energy bandgaps and charge transfer rates for photocatalysis, enabling wide and comprehensive photocatalytic applications. In addition, they are strong candidate materials for wastewater treatment and new-energy applications. In summary, the review provides future directions for the development of novel magnetic catalysts, contaminant removal, and even large-scale practical applications.

Abstract:Heavy metal pollution has a serious negative impact on the ecological environment and human health due to its toxicity, persistence, and non-biodegradable properties. Among the technologies applied in heavy metals removal, adsorption has been widely used as the most promising method because of its simple operation, high removal efficiency, strong applicability, and low cost. Iron-manganese oxide nanomaterials, as an effective absorbent, have attracted wide attention due to their simple preparation, wide material sources, and lower ecological impact. So far, no quantitative investigation has been conducted on the preparation and application of iron-manganese oxide nanomaterials in heavy metals removal. This review discussed the preparation methods and characteristics of iron‑manganese oxide nanomaterials over the past decade and provided some basic information for the improvement of preparation methods. The physicochemical properties of iron‑manganese oxide nanomaterials and environmental conditions are regarded as important factors that affect the removal efficiency of heavy metals. In addition, the removal mechanisms of heavy metals in aqueous solution with iron‑manganese oxide nanomaterials were mainly included redox, complex precipitation, electrostatic attraction, and ion exchange. The reusability and practicability in actual wastewater treatment of 3nganese oxide nanomaterials were further discussed. Several key problems still need to be solved in the existing progress, such as improving the ability and stability of the iron‑manganese oxide nanomaterials to remove heavy metals from actual wastewater. In conclusion, this review provides a future direction for the application of iron‑manganese oxide nanomaterials for heavy metals removal and even in the large-scale treatment of actual wastewater.

Abstract:The remediation of water streams, polluted by various substances, is important for realizing a sustainable future. Magnetic adsorbents are promising materials for wastewater treatment. Although numerous techniques have been developed for the preparation of magnetic adsorbents, with effective adsorption performance, reviews that focus on the synthesis methods of magnetic adsorbents for wastewater treatment and their material structures have not been reported. In this review, advancements in the synthesis methods of magnetic adsorbents for the removal of substances from water streams has been comprehensively summarized and discussed. Generally, the synthesis methods are categorized into five groups, as follows: direct use of magnetic particles as adsorbents, attachment of pre-prepared adsorbents and pre-prepared magnetic particles, synthesis of magnetic particles on pre-prepared adsorbents, synthesis of adsorbents on preprepared magnetic particles, and co-synthesis of adsorbents and magnetic particles. The main improvements in the advanced methods involved making the conventional synthesis a less energy intensive, more efficient, and simpler process, while maintaining or increasing the adsorption performance. The key challenges, such as the enhancement of the adsorption performance of materials and the design of sophisticated material structures, are discussed as well.

Abstract:Abstract The constant growth in population worldwide over the past decades continues to put forward the need to provide access to safe, clean water to meet human needs. There is a need for cost-effective technologies for water and wastewater treatment that can meet the global demands and the rigorous water quality standards and at the same maximizing pollutant efficiency removal. Current remediation technologies have failed in keeping up with these factors without becoming cost-prohibitive. Most recently, nanotechnology has been sought as the best alternative to increase access to water supplies by remediating those already contaminated and offering ways to access unconventional sources. The use of iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles as nanoadsorbents has led way to a new class of magnetic separation strategies for water treatment. This review focuses on highlighting some of the most recent advances in core-shell iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles and nanocomposites containing iron oxide nanoparticles currently being developed for water and wastewater treatment of organic pollutants. We discuss the novelty of these novel materials and the insight gained from their advances that can help develop cost-effective reusable technologies for scale-up and commercial use.

Abstract:In recent years, some new and sensitive analytical instruments have been invented or existing instruments have been improved, which have resulted in many advanced achievements. However, sample pre-treatment techniques still play important and irreplaceable roles in the analysis of pollutants. Among the developed sample pre-treatment techniques, solid phase extraction is the most often used method and has been widely applied worldwide. In solid phase extraction, adsorbent is the key part to achieve high sensitivity and enrichment efficiency, which is the hot topic in analytical and environmental fields in recent years. In order to deeply understand the prospect of solid phase extraction, this review summarises the recent advances of adsorbents including ion imprinting materials, magnetic materials, core-shell materials, mesoporous materials, carbon nanotubes, TiO2 nanotube arrays and some other new materials.

Abstract:Since titanium carbide Ti3C2 nanosheets were first produced in 2011, an increasing number of members of this new family of two-dimensional transition metal carbides/nitride (MXene) materials have been successfully synthesized. Due to their large specific surface area, hydrophilic nature and abundant highly active surface sites, MXenes have been demonstrated to adsorb a variety of environmental pollutants, including heavy metal ions, organic dyes, radionuclides, and gas molecules, and thus can be used for the removal of pollutants and even sensing. In this review, we summarize the recent research progress on MXene materials in the adsorptive remediation of environmental pollutants and highlight the main challenges in the future to understand the full potential of MXene materials in environmental systems.

Abstract:Emerging contaminants have widely existed in terrestrial and river and lake ecosystems, and gradually bioaccumulate and amplify along the food chain, seriously threatening the survival of animals and plants and human health. Adsorption has long been regarded as one of the most promising methods to remove pollutants from wastewater. Among various adsorbent materials, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), a new class of porous materials, are considered as an excellent adsorbent due to its high specific surface area, high porosity, high crystallinity, tunable pore size and structure, and abundant active sites. In this review, we analyze the influences of different preparation and modification methods on the structure of MOFs and the improvement of adsorption properties of MOFs and its derivatives. In addition, we focus on the emerging contaminants that pose a great threat to human life and health, and further analyze the adsorption mechanism and the factors that affect the adsorption performance.
