Abstract:Objective To evaluate the outcomes of intraluminal stent-assisted angioplasty in treating the symptomatic stenosis of proximal vertebral artery. Methods Sixty-seven patients with symptomatic vertebral artery stenosis refractory to medical therapy were treated with endovascular angioplasty using seventy-four balloon-expandable corollary stents. Results Angiographic results suggested that the lesions were reduced from 74.5%(50%-99%) to 4.8%(0-20%) without procedural and periprocedural complications.Diameter of the stenosis vessels retureded to normal size in 27 cases. The patients were clinically asymptomatic and neurologically intact.Follow-up angiogram revealed the arterial restenosis in 2/18 patients. Conclusion Early results of intraluminal stenting for symptomatic proximal vertebral artery stenosis are satisfactory, but long-term clinical and angiographic follow-up is needed.
