Abstract:Since the Taoyuanming of Confucius an Arcadia (Taohuayuan), utopia imagined in China has continued to this day. Such utopian imagination has been shaped by a variety of literary texts. These works depict the human desires and frustrations that form the utopian imagination. Typically, an Arcadia (Taohuayuan) has been recognized as a symbol of East Asian utopia. An Arcadia (Taohuayuan) anarchism is the utopian character of this small country, based on sensitization of the Lao strong. An Arcadia (Taohuayuan) world ruling class does not exist. But Confucius thought a utopian world is possible to imagine on the premise of ‘Virtuous Policy’ (德治). By the late Qing Dynasty (淸末), Kangyouwei (康有爲) had written and presented a utopia realized through the system of the “East-West stand.” The literary text on utopia information in continued to experiment with implementation of the ‘imagined’ in the literature as “reality” of everyday life, immediately following the 1911 revolution in the People’s Republic of China. As an Avant garde writer, Gefei`s 「Renmiantaohua」 was influenced by the reflexive nature of the report on the point of the experiment. Gefei`s 「Renmiantaohua」 has been rated as an outstanding work depicting the implementation process and the frustration of the utopian imagination. He is an inspiration to vanguard artists who focus on the desire and the frustration of the utopian imagination through the 「Renmiantaohua」 myths and stories that are comparable to the Sijipuseu story, which in itself perpetuates utopia in literature. In this paper, we explored the trails to implementation of a utopian imagination that has persisted since the ancient Chinese in current literary text. An Arcadia (Taohuayuan) of Confucius and Taoyuanming accompanied Gefei in the 21st century in describing the process of desire and frustration to realize utopia through a variety of traditional shape figures among other favorites. The author interprets those frustrations and desires of the human life course as just utopian imagination.

Abstract:In the dissertation, the author defines three characteristics to the ideal of Utopia, which has so long a history and so complicacy of its meaning in Chinese literature. Firstly, the ideal of Utopia originates from and constitutes of the idea of anti-society, which includes much unsatisfied emotion to the social situation at its time. Secondly, what the ideal of Utopia truly cares about is not to design politics, laws and administrative system of the country but to look for a terrestrial Paradise without any rein and violence. In other words, the deal of Utopia means a life style full of inaction, peace and pleasure. Thirdly, the ideal of Utopia follows the inherent way of Reactionism and wants to make people return to the nature of human being. In a word, it is an un-operational ideal of intrinsic morality.

Abstract:The narrative of Utopia in Chinese literature has fallen into a deep route of literary tradition, which looks backward towards the rural ideal of the land of peach blossoms. The article, in a close examination of the work Shouhuo by Yan Lianke, provides a process analysis that shows the formation of the rural tradition and the disillusionment with the tradition in the twenty-first century. Shouhuo reveals a profound crisis in Chinese society and culture.

Abstract:This paper is a critical assessment of Chinese literature for children with reference to the People's Republic of China. It reviews literature for children in ancient and modern China. Children in ancient times could enjoy adult literature, mostly based on historical events and figures, of the highly romantic and adventurous kinds. In the post‐revolution era Chinese literature was imitative of the West, using fantasy and animal characterisation. In contemporary China the short story format is popular but realistic fiction is very rare. However, where children's literature excels is illustrations in picture books. Chinese children's picture books provide a visual feast because of the different art forms used, including classical Chinese painting style. Narrative style in picture books and short stories, on the other hand, lacks a child's narrative voice. More successful narration has been achieved by children's writers from elsewhere, e.g. Hong Kong and Taiwan. Contemporary Chinese literature is still rather didactic but there is a move towards fantasy adventure tales.

Abstract:In seeking an appropriate approach to the ideal society in Chinese thought, the present study comprises two main parts. The first part deals with a debate in Chinese philosophy concerning the possibility of an inner or immanent transcendence as a way of defining Chinese culture. As this debate unfolded, it became clear that Chinese philosophers—especially on the mainland—do not regard the transcendent–immanent distinction as applicable to Chinese culture and philosophy. In short, this culture and its philosophy simply has no need for transcendence. Instead, other terms are needed, especially those drawn from a tradition that "secularised" them many millennia ago: moral cultivation, regeneration, home, and intimacy. In this light, the second part of the study deals with two approaches to the ideal society: the Confucian "Great Harmony [大同 datong]" and the short story "Peach Blossom Spring [桃花源 taohuayuan]". These terms are mediated by a treatment of the "Three Worlds Theory [三世说 sanshishuo]", developed most fully by He Xiu (129–82 CE). The outcome of this investigation is that the ideal society is very much part of this world. It can be known only through direct observation, empirical investigation, and it is achievable only by detailed planning. It is nothing less than home.

Utopian and insular spaces in Chinese literature: An island approach

Abstract:In response to the relative lack of scholarly attention paid to the relationship between island utopia and Chinese literature, this paper studies the imagination of both island and insular geographies in Chinese ‘utopian’ literature using an island-sensitive approach. Employing an expanded and constructive conception of the island, the paper examines the heterogeneity of Chinese island and insular imaginaries in literary works from diverse historical periods, especially in relation to the dominant western model of the remote tropical oceanic island. Based on the finding that the alterity of Chinese island and insular imagination lies as much in its depiction of spatial ambiguities as in its mixing of diverse figures, I reflect further on the benefits and perils of adopting a west-inflected island approach in examining the imaginary landscapes of utopianism and insularity in Chinese literature. It is argued that Chinese island literature is more a reading effect enabled by an imported theoretical approach than any inherent tradition in itself. In the end, two paths for innovating island aesthetics and epistemologies in cross-cultural contexts are proposed.

Abstract:In 2015, a new film Mr. Six, shot by the famous Chinese film director Feng Xiaogang, was widely discussed in the Chinese academia. Some scholars link this movie to Utopia that it reflects utopian imagination in contemporary Chinese society. Does “Juyi hall” stand as the Utopian image in contemporary Chinese society? If for a period in the history of the outlaw Lin Chong “to join rebels” and go to “Juyi hall” was a Utopian image, so is it still the case today? In my point of view, to consider the process of modernization of Chinese society, to consider contemporary Chinese society, the Chinese form of Utopia is a significant theoretical issue. In 1516, the British humanist Thomas Moore wrote and published his important book Utopia, with the full title “A Truly Golden Little Book, No Less Beneficial Than Entertaining, of a Republic’s Best State and of the New Island Utopia”. Combined the ancient Greek οὐ (no) plus τόπος (place) with the suffix ία, Moore creates the term Utopia refers to “nowhere”; a place does not exist in the real world, but might be an ideal and perfect place. Based on the nature of Utopia, Moore criticized the social system and political condition in the primitive accumulation capitalist period of Britain, and concluded a description from the relation of property, mode of production, urban-rural relationship, social welfare, academic-physical labor relations to a number of modern social systems to fit human nature. Since then, Utopia has become an important concept about the future social system, the rational existence of human beings, and the spiritual home of modern society. In the early stage of capitalism development in Western Europe, Utopia becomes synonymous with “Utopian socialism”. These thoughts, however, since the book published, became an important ideological source of Marxism. In 1880, in order to response theoretical confusion in reality, Friedrich Engels published his book Socialism: Utopian and Scientific, to analyze and explain the difference and relationship between scientific socialism, which based on Marxism, and utopian socialism. Engels pointed out that the discovery and creation of historical materialism and residual/salvage value theory make utopian ideal into a realistic movement, which is the modern socialist movement. In 1917, leaded by Lenin and other Bolshevik leaders, October revolution in Russia achieved victory and built Soviet Union, the first socialist country in the history of mankind. After World War II, with the development of cold war, a series of anti-utopia (dystopia) works were published to make Utopia be a negative term, relating to the childish “left” disease and unrealistic fantasy. In 1989, the dissolution of the former Soviet Union, the Berlin wall was torn down; global socialist movement and Marxism were stuck amid the gloom. Abstract:Abstract In 2011, amid a string of controversies in the Taiwanese countryside surrounding industrial pollution, urban expansion, the unsustainable exploitation of natural resources, and the destruction of the natural and rural environments, poet and editor Hong Hong announced ‘the last pastoral poem’, suggesting that the representation of the countryside as bucolic landscape was an out-of-date and politically impotent trope. This paper argues, contrary to Hong Hong’s polemic, that depictions of pastoral utopia remain a vital and powerful alternative to the forces of urbanisation and industrialisation in Taiwan and the larger Sinophone world. The paper analyses poetry by contemporary poet Ling Yu against the background of the tradition of utopian pastoral writing represented by the book of Genesis, Virgil, Laozi, Tao Yuanming, and Gary Snyder. The paper argues for a poetics that symbolically mediates between nature and culture, and building and dwelling, by means of slow ‘cultivation’, in both the agricultural and aesthetic senses. The paper further draws on transnational Hong Kong poet Liu Wai Tong’s concept of ‘ you -topia’ to suggest a means of reconciling Chinese tradition and contemporary ecocritical discourse.

Abstract:Outlaw is one of the archetypes in world literature. Honghuzi is the eastern version of the image of the outlaw. As his counterpart in European literature, he expressed the ambiguity, the ambivalence of human nature. Unlike the characters of F. Schiller, A.S. Pushkin and others, the image of Honghuzi is the least marked by romantic features. In the prose of the Russian emigrant writers of the Harbin diaspora, Honghuzi expresses the Chinese mentality; the specifics of orientalism are projected onto him, and at the same time its image is extremely objective, which primarily characterizes the prose of P.V. Shkurkin - the author of the ethnographic prose about the outlaws of the border zone of the Russian Far East, Manchuria, Korea and Mongolia. The context consists of the works by Shi Naian, Pushkin, Schiller, English folklore, etc. Comparative analysis allows us to identify the individual features of the artistic perception of the Honghuzi's activities by Shkurkin. It is proved that the interpretation of Honghuzi by Shkurkin is close to the image of the robber in Chinese, English, German literature, along with Russian literature of the XIX-XX centuries.

Abstract:This essay investigates how utopian thinking met with dystopian variations in contemporary Chinese science fiction. The dystopian gaze into the utopian dreams, the alternative histories contending with the utopian narratives, and the heterotopian experiments challenging ideological orthodoxy are the focus of my analysis. Reading the dystopian fiction by Chan Koonchung and science fiction stories and novels by Han Song, Bao Shu and Hao Jingfang etc., I do not intend to illustrate the utopian/ dystopian interventions in the political sense, but rather to explore the vigorous, multifaceted variations of utopia, dystopia, and heterotopia that these authors have created as discursive constructs to suggest alternatives to the utopia/dystopian dualism. Contemporary science fiction authors write back to the usual literary practice taking words as reflections of the world. To these writers, words are worlds.

Abstract:This volume of essays by scholars in the field of English and American studies brings together a variety of perspectives on the utopian literature originating from cultural communities from 1790-1910. Ranging from the Lunar society to the Nationalist movement, and from the Transcendentalists to the Indian Monday Club the fifteen peer-reviewed articles examine a wide range of contexts in which utopian literature was written, and will be of interest to scholars in the field of cultural and literary studies alike. Moreover, the volume presents the reader with a unique overview of developments in Utopian thinking and literature throughout the long nineteenth century. Specific attention is paid to the transatlantic nature of cultural communities in which utopian writings were produced and read as well as to the colonial contexts of nineteenth-century utopian literature. As such, the collection offers a novel approach to a tradition of utopian writing that was essentially transcultural.

Abstract:The classical utopian novels,typically Utopia by Thomas More,are generally ideological novels with a theme put antecedently.They share and are generated from the social background of the great geographical discovery,the Reformation,the monasterial life style and the urbanization process.As Thomas More described in his novel,the public ownership is of originality as well as ambiguity.Later discussion even led to numerous concepts and new literature types such as the Secular-utopia,the Hetero-utopias,the Dystopia and the Anti-utopia.Classical utopian novels stressing the spiritual dimension in human life may possibly impair the other reasonable direction towards the appropriate worldly enjoyment,which discussion differentiates the Classical utopia and the Secular-utopia.Although the great geographical discovery of the Renaissance in Europe is fruitful with a far-reaching influence,the understanding of the richness and diversity of different cultures were inadequate.The subjective assumption as well as casual modeling of the other culture prevailed in the time,at which point the Utopia and the Hetero-utopias were divided.Usually,utopia novels unfold,via an absent object,an imaginary blueprint to contrast with the underdevelopment and ugliness of the real world,and induce the reader to the conclusion that the standing institutions should be ″mostly denied″.This impulse to drastically alter and rebuild the society leads to the argument between the utopian(socialism) and the scientific(socialism) theories.Classical utopian novels are in nature pursuing the ultimate meaning and value,trying to consider the Spiritual Utopia and Institutional Utopia in combination. Meanwhile,the writing and spreading of utopian novels have been an adventure of mind.When different types of Unitarianism emerged in the 20th and the 21st century,Utopianism together with the Dystopia roused broad awareness and hatred.People in utopian world did not evade violence,but pluralistic determinism(Devine,Economical,Political and Social) of history itself.Thus,the alertness for political violence leads to the division between Utopian and Anti-utopian literary works.

Abstract:Abstract This study traces the respective evolutions of two separate motifs—Daoist utopia and grotto heavens (dongtian)—in early and medieval Chinese literature, and discusses the significance of their convergence in the influential literary classic “Peach Blossom Spring” ("Taohua yuan ji") by Tao Qian (aka Tao Yuanming, 365—427). The purposes of this article are twofold: first, to enhance our understanding of the ideological and textual connections between “Peach Blossom Spring” and Confucianism and Daoism; second, to offer new insights into the unique characteristics of Chinese utopianism, where political vision and mythical imagination frequently were inter-twined.

Abstract:In this article, the author explores the cosmopolitan elements that are intermingled with his apparently patriotic, even nationalistic, narratives. The author wants to argue that as Lao She's ultimate dream for the entire humanity, this cosmopolitan idealism, or the Great Unity of the world, comes from his own Manchu origin against the backdrop of the Han majority in China, his isolated personal experience as a young lecturer sojourning in London, the bitter experience of him and his family caused by the Western and Japanese invasions, his ambiguous religious beliefs, and his inheritance of the traditional Confucius culturing.

Abstract:With reference of the theory of the French imagologie,this article explored the starting point of the deformative logic that determined the hetero images and its relationship with the self-cognition of the Huaxia people in the Classic of Mountains and Rivers(Shanhaijing).The hetero images and the self cognition in the book contained a certain egocentrism of the Huaxia people,and also a respect for and tolerance to alien races and their cultures.This was of positive significance to the formation of China's multinational political community.The unique way how the Huaxia people treated alien races could partially rectify the theory of the French imagologie.
