Abstract:In modern times,while Western learnings were introduced into China,Confucian classics became historiography.The East Zhejiang scholarship integrated the classics with the institution,which made it an important site for modern scholars to communicate between the old（China） and the new（West）,and build the new academic system.Liu Xianxin regarded the East Zhejiang scholarship his principal learning.He compiled The Collection of Roots（Xianhe Lu） many times,and constructed an academic genealogy of the East Zhejiang scholarship which perceived the Wuzhou historiography as the surface and Yaojiang Neo-Confucianism as the core.Moreover,Liu Xianxin explored the academic origin of literary and historical collation of the East Zhejiang School in the way of "knowing the categories and understanding the general system",and tried to integrate the study of life with the study of classics and history,in order to achieve the modern transformation of Chinese scholarship.The paper probes the sources and purposes of the original meaning and theme of Xianhe Lu,and hopes to show that the modern East Zhejiang School had been constantly shaped in the historical context and academic network.In addition,the paper also tends to provide some thoughts on how to clarify the changes of modern scholarship and analyze the transformation of Chinese civilization.
Behind Written Records: Rethinking the Features of Xia from the Shiji and the Hanshu

Abstract:The Shiji 史記(“Records of the Grand Historian”) and Hanshu 漢書(“History of the Former Han”) have been used as the main sources of the concept of Xia 俠(“knight-errant”) in the pre-Qin and Western Han dynasties. However, these historical records may have certain emphases that may lead readers to have a partial view of Xia, due to the time gap between the authors’ era and when the events that they recorded happened, and their preferences. We can actually see some divergences in the records from the Shiji and Hanshu that somehow implicated a possible different understanding of Xia at that time. By a close reading towards the difference of the Shiji and Hanshu, this article implicated a better way that readers can deal with the information provided by historical records. Readers should be cautious of the delay of the records, the author’s possible tendency, and the limitation of original materials. Therefore, when facing some important historical records such as the Shiji and Hanshu, we should not just focus on several famous pieces but should pay attention to other materials which have been neglected for a long time. Then, through comparison, readers can try to provide a different explanation to a certain historical issue.

Abstract:The text Xi Nian,on the bamboo slips collected by Qinghua University,is a historical record divided into 23 chapters,and similar in structure to the Zhu Shu Ji Nian(Annals on Bamboo Slips).The earliest historical events recorded in Xi Nian occurred in the early Zhou Dynasty,and the latest events occurred in the early Warring States.So Xi Nian must have been written during the reign of King Su of Chu.Compared with history books transmitted from the past,Xi Nian contains much which is new and very important.Some of them confirm the accounts of bronze inscriptions,such as that of the Da Bao Gui,which records that Lu Zi Geng(Geng,the son of Lu)was set up as king when a Shang city revolted after the death of King Wu of Zhou.Some of them can be cross-referenced with the philosophers' books,such as the record of King Cheng of Zhou killing Fei Lian,which accords with the Mengzi but differs from the Shi Ji.Others are related to the Bamboo slips of the Chu State,such as Yang Wei's battle with the army of the Jin State at the Great Wall,an event also recorded on the slips of the Chu State unearthed from Geling.

Abstract:The bronze tripod of Western Han Dynasty stored in the cultural relic museum of Luoyang University,showing the Xuanchun characters.Some scholars believe that the characters were related to Yichun of Runan prefecture recorded in the Geographical Records in the History of the Han Dynasty,and the Yichun of Runan prefecture in this historical book should be revised into Xuanchun according to the bronze tripod.Based on the historical records and unearthed documents,this paper indicates that the Yichun county of Runan prefecture recorded in the Geographical Records in the History of the Han Dynasty was not an error,and the real meaning of Xuanchun on this bronze tripod need further discussion.

Abstract:Han scholar Huan Tan (c. 40 BC-32 AD) has attached two characteristic features to “Sandai shibiao” type historical tables that Sima Qian (c. 145 or 135–86 BC) inserted in his Shiji (The Grand Clerk’s Records): according to him, they are pangxing and xieshang . For many centuries, scholars have not made the meaning of these features clear. The author relies on a typological analysis of writing style of excavated sources from early imperial China to offer his own interpretation. Abstract:Xunzijiaoshi(荀子校释) provides precise and appropriate annotations to Xunzi(荀子).It compiled and revisited the previous research available both within and without the country,dissolved doubts and problems and offered insightful opinions of the text of Xunzi.Nevertheless,little omissions and small errors are inevitable.Five mistakes are analyzed in this article: qi(齐) in heqi(和齐)shall not be pronounced differently;Shuai(率) has been mispronounced twice;Juan(蠲) in juanyi(蠲疑) is a borrowed character of ■,She(埶) in shezaibenchao shall be pronunced as she(设),and aishe(隘慑) is identical to dianai(垫隘) in Zuo.

Abstract:Xun Shi Ping Hua(Popular Stories with Admonitions) uses both classic and vernacular language,the contrast of the two language styles reflects the synchronic status of Chinese oral language at the beginning of the 15th century,as well as the diachronic evolution of vernacular vocabulary's replacing of classic vocabulary.This paper takes semantics as unites,selects 12 categories of verbs,doing synchronic and diachronic analysis according to their cases in the contrast of classic and vernacular,then gives complement explanation of the old and new replacement of these verbs in the language of that time.This study provides a reliable evidence for the research of the language of that period in the Ming Dynasty.

Abstract:Cangdu town of Weinan City, Shanxi Province was one of the central areas where the Tongzhi Renxu(1862) Hui Revolt arose in Qing Dynasty. The historical records and oral historical materials obtained from there have always been an important basis for scholars to recognize and study this Hui Revolt. This newly discovered Hui-Han Reconciliation Monument in Weinan is a precious inscriptional historical material that is intrinsically related to the occurrence of Renxu Hui Revolt and has not yet been used by the academic circles. The inscription record of the process and handling results of a series of Hui-Han disputes, caused by acting between Cangdu and Beijiao Villages of Weinan City in the 8th year of the Xianfeng Emperor, reflects the political organizations, customs, and actual Hui-Han relationships in the Hui inhabited areas of Shanxi Province before the Renxu Hui Revolt. When proving this inscription with other historical materials, it can be inferred that religious factors played a key role in the Hui-Han disputes at that time. The verification and interpretation of the Reconciliation Monument provide a useful reference for rethinking the causes and nature of this Hui Revolt.

Abstract:In light of many different conclusions about Zhidao (Straight Road), the paper, based on the documents and archaeological investigations concerned, points out that Ganquan of Shaanxi Province (indeed the capital city Xianyang) was Zhidao’s Southern terminus. According to the authentic documents before Tang Dynasty, we can affirm that Zhidao connected Ganquan and Jiuyuan. However, details of the route cannot be gained in lack of authentic proofs. Depending on documents of Tang Dynasty, Shi Nianhai recovered the route as called “West Line”. Up to now, the studies by Shi Nianhai is much more credible, for his objectors do not put forward any powerful proofs.

Abstract:The paper suggests that,"Baiguanzhi" of Xuhanshu(《續漢書· 百官志》) has a basic writing styles as follows: the main text from "Guanbu(官簿) " in the Eastern Han Dynasty narrates the name, number and rank of officials,while the annotation text written by Sima Biao in the Western Jin Dynasty narrates the responsibility and history of the officials. According to this standard,the paper does a re-review of the two suspects of the entry "Juntaishou(郡太守) ",and analyzes the texts in the entries of "Silixiaowei(司隸校尉) ","Zhoucishi(州刺史) ","Xianlingzhang(縣令長) " and "Zhuhouwang(諸侯王) ". It also indicates that the writing style,which inherits and develops the new trend of promoting Zhou Li(《周禮》) when narrating bureaucracy establishment since the late Eastern Han, has an important significance in the history between the Han and Jin.

Abstract:Sentences of The Analects of Confucius, Book of Filial Piety, The Book of Mencius, The Book of Changes, and Master Zuo’s Spring and Autumn Annals found on the bamboo slips included in Han Dynasty Wooden Slips from Jianshuijinguan (Ⅲ) are different from those in extant versions of these books, which reflects that people in the Han dynasty were not confined solely to canonical literature, though they made positive use of these classics in governing the country.

Abstract:This article focused on one sect of historical sources in Yunlu Manchao, an academic work compiled by Zhao Yanwei of South Song dynasty. It was from a note of one map about Chang’an city written by Lü Dafang of North Song dynasty. Mainly I interpuncted this source again for there were many faults in several printed editions of Yunlu Manchao and revised the characters referring to the former studies. I also pointed out that it was viable to restore the note by Lü Dafang based on Yunlu Manchao.

Abstract:This article proposes that there are differences between the demonstrative Xu(许) in Medieval Chinese and Middle Chinese.Xu(许) in Medieval and Middle Chinese respectively are just homographs rather than cognates.After the discussion of Xu(许) 's differences in Chinese dialects from three aspects,it points out that at least the demonstrative Xu(许) in northern Zhengjiang Province's Wu dialect was not inherited form Medieval Chinese.Concerning the origin of the demonstrativ and locative Xu(许),this articl suggests that Xu(许) is demonstrative.After having become a location demonstrative,Xu(许) then developed into a basic demonstrative morpheme.

Abstract:This paper involves an syncretic study of the structural characteristics, semantic stratification, graphical evolution and contextual analysis on a chronological base of the perplexing graphs and words which designate the Chinese, such as xia, hua and zhongguo, non-Chinese, such as yi, di, rong, and man, in early palaeographic and documentary sources. It shows how these terms evolved to distinguish between the two distinct ethnographical concepts in the early mind.The study shows that the conception of Hua-Xia and Zhongguo carried different connotations in the Western Zhou period from that defined in Spring and Autumn philological sources. The relocation of the Zhou capital to the east during the transition from Western to Eastern Zhou had generically diffused the concept of Xia and the elegant Ya culture. The conception of Xia and Yi, which had formerly distinguished between the Zhou elites and the non-Zhou people, came to distinguish between the central states and peripheral groups in the geographical sense, as well as between the Zhou subjects and the non-Zhou subjects in the political sense. Thus the conceptualisation of the so-called “Chinese-ness” postdates the actual formation of the ethnographical bulk of the Chinese people.

Abstract:This essay agrees that the two controversial characters on Slip 12 of the Hengxian should be transcribed as " " and " ," and pronounced as "ji" Secondly, with respect to six occurrences of the character " " (heng) on Slips 1-9 which Qiu Xigui reads as " " (ji), this essay holds that in the end it should be read as " " (heng), and that the reading provided by Li Ling is acceptable. Therefore, that piece of bamboo slip writing can be named " " (Hengxian). Thirdly, " " (heng) and " " (hengxian), or " " (heng) and " " (hengxian), are two concepts, the latter of which is based on the former. " " (heng) is more fundamental and more important than " " (hengxian). Scholars mostly equate " " (heng) with " " (hengxian), and even regard " " as the prior expression of this concept. One can hardly say that this is correct. In the bamboo writing, " " (heng) actually refers to " tian dao" (heavenly dao), rather than " dao" in the Laozi. The so-called " " (hengxian) suggests the very commencement of the genesis and evolvement of Heavenly dao, which is somewhat equivalent to "taishi" (grand commencement) in the Huainanzi . Fourthly, in the Hengxian, " " (heng) implies objective and natural laws, while " " (ji) suggests ought-to-be rules. " " (ji) in the bamboo writing is actually informed by " " (heng).

Abstract:The bronze gui food container published in 2007 bears an inscription that records the event of the Zhou king enfeoffing earl Tang in the Jin State and granting him the title "marquis." But the vessel owner "■ 公" (Duke ■) has not been identified all along. As the author believes,this character should be taken as" (爻疋) (疏)"seen in the Shuo Wen《说文》because it contains the component "爻"and is read "疋"(夏).

Abstract:On the basis of concerning stemma materials,this article made a detailed textual research on the geographical position of Xihe where Zixia had lived and taught,and concluded that its location was not the Xihe in the Kingdom of Wei(魏),but the Xihe in the Kingdom of Wei(卫).Then based on a further study of Zixia 's whereabouts,this article discussed the nature of Zixia being esteemed as the Teacher of Weiwenhou,a ruler of the Kingdom of Wei(魏),and the active influence made by the spreading of the Book of Songs in the district of Sanjin(Shanxi) on account of Zixia's study and teaching when visiting the Kingdom of Wei(魏).At last,this article analyzed the issue about Zixia prefacing the Book of Songs.
