Music and Power in International Relations

Abstract:Music is a cultural product which can be easily spread.Therefore,it is closely related with international politics.Power influences music in two ways.On the one hand,a causal relationship exists between music and political entities such as states and nations.It refers to the establishment of orthodox music,the promotion of anation's "own" music and the prohibition of the music from the enemies.Such a causal relationship can be rather coercive,or more flexible.On the other hand,social power is often embedded in music.Music,in its spread among societies,expresses the recognition of certain social power structures,builds the identity of transnational social groups,and represents the power of global capital.However,as an independent factor,music can also resist or deviate from the demands of power,and be used to reflect on power itself,which is more evident in the causal relationship.Studying the complicated relations between music and power in international society may help us to better understand the multi-faceted international realities.
