Research On Cotton Stalk Pulping With Alkaline Peroxide Extruding Pulp

Abstract:Cotton is widely planted in China, and cotton stalk, the agricultural residues, is one of most promising fiber sources in China. For a long time, there is no appropriate pulping method for this raw material. The usage of cotton stalk is very limited in the papermaking industry in China. In this paper, a neoteric pulping method, alkaline peroxide extruding pulp (APEP), and its application on cotton stalk are introduced. The dark layer skin of cotton stem is removed by a debarker first. The main chemicals used in the pulping process are alkali and peroxide, and the extruder screw is used as the mechanical treatment. The structure of extruder screw and the pulping theory of APEP are discussed. Then an orthogonal test design in the cotton stalk pulping is used in the experiments to obtain the optimal conditions and the main parameters in the chemical pretreatment stage according to the changes of the physical properties of the paper sheets. Results show that compared to the KP process, the pulp of APEP process produced a much higher yield and brightness with less chemical dosage and lower energy consumption than KP. Meanwhile the pulp also acquired a good physical strength close to cotton stalk of KP. Through bleaching, the brightness of APEP pulp could get above 80% ISO.

Abstract:In order to shorten processing time,reduce energy consumption and lessen burden on environment,two-step process and bleaching and dyeing in one bath process were carried out,the suitable scouring agents,chelating dispersants,dye varieties,sodium sulfate concentration,alkali type were screened.Results were compared with those of traditional process.It was said that the dyeings featured satisfactory quality and color fastness,if processed by scouring combined with reactive dyeing(using soda ash or liquid alkali as fixing agent),or scouring and dyeing in one bath.

Abstract:A process was developed by combining enzymatic and conventional pretreatment technics,and used for pretreatment of cotton fabrics sized with starch-PVA mixed size.Over 95% desizing ratio was attained,the capillary effect and whiteness were improved,CODCr pollution charge was decreased by 23%,alkali consumption was remarkably lowered,and wastewater pH value decreased from 12.8 to 8.5.This is a clean production process suitable for reforming the existent conventional processes.This simple and facile process widened the application range of the enzymatic pretreatment processes.

Abstract:Textile wastewaters from alkali reduction, printing and dyeing operations are usually highly basic, turbid and have many COD and color constituents present in high concentrations; therefore, effective pretreatment is required to make them biotreatable. Direct acidification of one such wastewater failed because it resulted in heavy production of colloidal products. Coagulation and flocculation, using 800~1 500 mg/L of MgSO_ 4 and 2 mg/L of a high molecular weight organic flocculant HPAM, and followed by acidification to a pH of <3.0, achieved excellent pretreatment performance; COD, color intensity and turbidity of the wastewater sample were reduced by 92%, 97%, and nearly 100%, respectively.

Abstract:The goal of this study is to present an environmentally benign route for cotton fabric and investigate the effect of different pretreatments in natural dyeing. In this context, conventional alkaline scouring, conventional hydrogen peroxide bleaching, low-temperature one-step biopreparation processes, namely enzymatic scouring (alkaline pectinase and alkaline pectinase-neutral cellulase combination) at 55 °C and enzyme-bleaching agent (hydrogen peroxide/sodium percarbonate/sodium perborate)-activator agent (TAED) combinations at 65 °C were applied to 100% cotton knitted fabric. The use of agricultural waste and eco-friendly mordants was preferred in natural dyeing. For this purpose, pretreated fabrics were dyed with the outer green shell of almond fruit extracts and a low amount of 0.4 g/L metal mordants (alum and iron(II) sulfate) in accordance with the simultaneous mordanting method. The dyeing properties of bio- and conventionally prepared cotton fabrics were examined in terms of colorimetric data ( K/S , CIEL a * b * C * h °) and wash fastness compared with water absorbency, whiteness, weight loss, pectin removal, and type of mordant. Excellent wash fastness values were achieved regardless of the type of pretreatment. Low-temperature one-step biopreparation can be a good substitute for conventional scouring and bleaching processes. Since different results can be achieved, it is essential to determine and evaluate all bioprocess conditions depending on the end-use characteristics of the textile (e.g. whether it will be white or dyed/printed, its color and lightness/darkness) at the laboratory and industrial scale applications.

Abstract:Both 2% and 5% omf dyeings of polycotton fabric which had been produced using commercial grade disperse dyes and reactive dyes can be washed-off using two, novel processes that utilise polyamide beads. The bead wash-off processes provided dyeings that were of similar colour, depth of shade and fastness compared to those which had been subjected to a conventional reduction clearing process in the case of the disperse dyes and a conventional wash-off in the case of the reactive dyes. The wastewater obtained from the bead wash-off of disperse dyes contained considerably lower concentrations of chloride ion as well as lower TDS compared to that secured using a conventional reduction clearing process, which was attributed to the beads having adsorbed vagrant chloride ions. In contrast, bead wash-off of reactive dyes did not reduce either the chloride ion concentration nor TDS content of the wastewater produced, because of the swamping effect of the very high chloride ion concentration. Bead wash-off also enabled significant reductions in both heat energy and water consumption to be achieved.

Abstract:In this paper, the application of the ultrasonic technology to the enzyme desizing pretreatment of polylactic acid (PLA) fiber was studied, and the different effect of such technology and traditional treatment on the PLA properties was also discussed. The results showed that, with the aid of the ultrasonic wave, the mass decrease rate and the whiteness of fiber increased 15% and 25% respectively, while the tear strength decreased nearly 6% after the enzyme pretreatment. Besides, the time of ultrasonic pretreatment also decreased 20% compared with traditional process. The optimal enzyme desizing conditions and fomula were accomplished, the concentration of H2O2 and refining agent should be 6 mL/L and 4 g/L, the recommended enzyme concentration was 5 g/L.

Abstract:In order to produce high-quality raw silk of ultrafine size,various treatments were tested to dry,cook and reel raw cocoons of ultrafine filament whose single yarn size was about 1. 1 dtex. Based on the reeling data,appropriate major process condition for drying cocoons was: primary drying at 90 ℃ for 90 min and a range of long pile back for 12 h,second drying from 90 ℃ down to 75 ℃ evenly and maintaining at 75 ℃ for 120 min. That for cooking cocoons was: high temperature permeating stage at 95 ℃,low temperature permeating stage at 55 ℃,steaming stage at 95 ℃,finishing stage at 80 ～ 90 ℃,guarded exit stage at 50 ℃,and cooking time 7 min. That for reeling cocoons was: the collection device with magnetic eye aperture at 60 ～ 70 μm,croisure length about 14 cm,end-groping temperature at 90 ℃ ± 3 ℃,reeling water temperature at 36 ℃ ± 3 ℃,flow rate at 700 mL /min ± 100 mL /min,reeler speed about 80 ～ 100 r /min,and manual fixed-cocoon-number end feeding. The results indicated that drying cocoon with lower temperature and longer time and steaming cocoon with lower temperature and shorter time are favorable to improve the reelability of cocoons and cleanness and neatness of raw silk. Lower reeler speed,high end-groping temperature and higher reeling water temperature are favorable to increase reelability of cocoons. Turning the reeler's automatically sensed fixed-filament-size end feeding into manual fixed-cocoon-number end feeding,using small aperture magnetic eye collection device,and setting longer croisure length are favorable to enhance quality of the raw silk.
Process Route of Producing High Count Pure Cotton Yarn Dyed Fabrics by Carrier Soluble PVA Spinning Technology

Abstract:Two process routes(dissolving water-soluble polyvinyl alcohol(PVA) after dyeing and weaving,dyeing and weaving after dissolving water-soluble PVA) used to produce high count and high density pure cotton yarn dyed fabric by using water-soluble PVA carrier spinning technology are analyzed and the experimental researches are done.The research results show that the strength of yarn produced by the former process route is lower and its weavability is bad,and it's difficult for industrial production.The weaving efficiency and the fabric quality can be guaranteed by the later process route and it is suitable for industrial production.Also the whiteness of the dyed yarn fabric decreases after dissolving PVA and its color becomes light,but there is no obvious staining.

Abstract:For cotton fabric dyeing, a significant quantity of salt and water are typically consumed in the conventional water dyeing bath. In this study, an environmentally friendly alternative was investigated that could eliminate water waste and salt usage, as well as reducing chemical consumption. This method, which employs a hydrophobic organic chemical/water two-phase dyeing system, solely involves fiber swelling, dye dissolution, and the use of alkaline agents. By substituting the water required for heat and mass with an organic chemical, 71.43% dye reduction can be achieved in dye consumption compared to traditional water-based dyeing method. Benefiting from the natural affinity between dyes and cotton fibers, without any interaction with hydrophobic organic chemicals, reactive dye can diffuse into the fiber surface, which can achieve above 98% dye uptake and 90% fixation rate. The K/S value of the dyed cotton fabric is much higher than that of conventional water bath at the same dye concentration, and it is the highest when the water content is 120 %. Moreover, the uniform distribution of dye and the color fastness of the dyed fabric are comparable to traditional water-based dyeing. Due to the influence of intermolecular forces, the aggregation of dye is changed to varying degrees in different hydrophilic and hydrophobic cotton fiber dyeing systems, which further influences the dyeing quality. This study not only improves the utilization of dye but achieves salt-free, no wastewater emission and reduces the dyeing cost, providing an economical and sustainable dyeing method for the industrial dyeing of cotton fabric.

Abstract:The traditional pre-treatment of cotton fabric hardly meets the requirement of low carbon emissions due to its large energy consumption and wastewater discharge. In this study, a low-temperature and near-neutral strategy was designed by establishing a tetraacetylethylenediamine (TAED)-activated sodium percarbonate (SPC) system. First, the effects of SPC concentration, temperature and duration on the whiteness index (WI) and capillary effect of cotton fabrics were investigated. Particularly, excess SPC's ability to create an additional bleaching effect was studied. The optimized activated pre-treatment was compared with the traditional pre-treatment in terms of the bleaching effect and energy consumption. Further, the degradation of morin, which is one of the natural pigments in cotton, was carried out in a homogeneous TAED/SPC system to reveal the bleaching mechanism. Lastly, the application performance of the treated cotton was evaluated by characterizing the dyeability, mechanical properties, morphology, etc. The research results showed that temperature had a significant influence on both the WI and capillary effect, followed by the SPC concentration and duration. The WI was positively correlated with the SPC concentration, but excess SPC could not produce an obvious additional effect. The WI of the fabric increased by 67.6% after the optimized activated bleaching using 10 mmol/L SPC and 15 mmol/L TAED at 70 °C for 30 min. Compared with the traditional process performed at 95 °C for 45 min, the activated process produced approximately 39.3% energy savings. Research on the bleaching mechanism indicated that the reactive species that participated in degrading the morin were the hydroxyl radical and superoxide radical, and the contribution degree of the former was larger than that of the latter. Two degradation components with molecular weights of 180 and 154 were detected using mass spectroscopy. Based on this, the bleaching mechanism of the TAED/SPC system was proposed. Moreover, the fabric after the activated pre-treatment had a suitable dyeability and strength, a lower wax residual and a smoother and cleaner fiber surface. The encouraging results showed that TAED/SPC is a promising bleaching system that is conducive to the sustainable advance of the textile industry.

Abstract:Increasing dye utilization, shortening the process and reducing the discharge of colored wastewater are the keys to clean dyeing and finishing of fabrics. In this study, we report a clean dyeing process. The process improved the dye utilization and achieved wrinkle-finishing and dyeing in the same bath by enhancing cross-linking of dyes with fiber macromolecular chains. It was observed by SEM that the cross-section of the dyed fibers showed round or oval shape, and the mid-cavities were reduced or even disappeared. The swelling rate of the fibers and cellulase degradation experiments showed that the dyes formed stable cross-linking structures with the macromolecular chains. Furthermore, differences in the structure of reactive dyes affected the optimal reaction conditions between the dyes and the fibers. Compared to conventional processes, the K/S , color fixation rate, and wrinkle recovery angle of dyed fabrics with different dyes were significantly improved. This illustrated the superiority of this process and the applicability of different structural dyes. Compared to traditional processes, the process saved 29.6 % of dyes and 16.7 % of alkalis. Importantly, the process could save 200 % of water, 9.5 kW h of energy consumption and 61.6 m 3 of saturated steam. Ultimately, this process could save 7.22 $ of the cost of dyeing 1 kg of fabric. The concentration of dyes in the dyeing wastewater was significantly reduced. In summary, the clean process has good economic and environmental benefits.

Ecofriendly pretreatment of cotton fabrics by ultrasonication and reusing bath chemicals

Abstract:The textile industries of Bangladesh contribute significantly to the country's economy, accounting for more than 40% of total annual export. The quest of new technologies for efficient water and energy use in cotton knit dyeing could result in significant water savings and improve environmental sustainability. Textile wet processing consumes a lot of utilities (water and energy), and the water generates a lot of waste, which enhances chemical consumption and effluent management costs. The cotton knit fabric used in this study was pretreated and dyed utilizing ultrasonication at a lower temperature than conventional pretreatment and dyeing techniques in an attempt to establish ecofriendly wet processing in the textile industry. The bath chemicals were reused up to two times before dyeing in conventional techniques, and fabric properties such as whiteness index, weight loss, bursting strength, color fastness to light, washing, perspiration, rubbing, color strength and durability, or dimensional stability were evaluated and compared with the values obtained by conventional techniques. The color matching of reactive dyed fabric for ultrasonic pretreated fabric with and without reusing bath chemicals was determined. The sonicated scoured and bleached fabric's whiteness index was found to be acceptable, with relatively low weight loss; however, the bursting strength was found to be increased. Color fastness to light, washing, perspiration, and rubbing were found to be comparable to the conventional technique for low temperature ultrasonicated pretreated and reuse-1 pretreated dyed knit fabric. The results also revealed that there was no color degradation during ultrasonication. FT-IR spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed no significant changes in the chemical composition of cellulose or the fabric shape of pretreated and dyed cotton knit fabric after ultrasonication.
Improvement of the Dyeability and Salt-Free Dyeing for Wool Fabrics with Anionic Dyes by Pretreatment with Whey and Soybean Proteins

Abstract:Wool fabrics were pretreated with whey protein concentrate (WPC) and soybean flour (SPF) proteins individually to improve their dyeability toward anionic dyes as acid orange 10 (AO10) and reactive black 5(RB5). Comprehensive study was undergone on these fabrics evaluating their dyeability, functional properties and the possibility to reduce the need for electrolyte in the dyebath. Furthermore, coating with protein as a biopolymer is more environmentally friendly. The structure and properties of the pretreated wool fabric were evaluated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), ultraviolet spectroscopy (UV) and antimicrobial activity. Nitrogen content was used to confirm the existence of amino groups on treated protein fabrics compared to the untreated one. All the pretreated dyed samples were enhanced in color strength (K/S). The color strength of wool treated fabrics without salt was the highest. Treating fabrics indicated better protection against ultraviolet radiation and the highest UV protection factor (UPF) was of white and dyed wool fabrics treated with SPF. The highest antimicrobial activity reduction percent against gram positive bacteria (Bacillus cereus) was in the sample treated with WPC as well as the sample treated with SPF has the greatest antimicrobial activity effect against fungal yeast (Candida albicans).

Pickering emulsion dyeing process of cotton cheese yarn

Abstract:In view of the waste of water resources and the discharge of sewage caused by reactive dyeing, a Pickering emulsion dyeing system is used to dye the cotton package yarn. The utilization of dyes and K/S value of the dyeings are measured as evaluation indicators, and the dyeing process is optimized as follows: volume ratio of emulsion oil to water of 17:3, nano-SiO2 (R812S) of 1％ with one-bath two-step fixing process. Compared with the traditional water bath dyeing, the dye utilization and K/S value of L-3G Navy Blue, L-S Red and L-F Yellow Brown in Pickering emulsion dyeing system are improved to some extent, and the rubbing fastness and levelness are similar, while the new process features reduced water, salt and alkali consumptions by 70％, and emulsion dyeing has no negative effect on the yarn strength and apparent appearance with no nano-SiO2 residues on the yarn surface.
Integrated enzymatic and chemical treatment for single-stage preparation of cotton fabrics

Abstract:Starch sized 100% cotton woven fabrics need desizing, scouring and bleaching treatments prior to coloration and finishing. Traditionally, alpha-amylase-based enzymatic desizing and combined scouring and bleaching with an alkali, surfactant and H 2 O 2 are used. Constant research is conducted on combining the desizing, scouring and bleaching processes into a single step by many researchers. This paper aims at combining enzymatic desizing and alkaline H 2 O 2 scouring cum bleaching with a surfactant and stabilizer. The treatment resulted in efficient desizing, scouring and bleaching, leading to excellent size removal, absorbency, seed/mote removal and whiteness index levels, and comparable tensile and tear strength levels to that of the two-step process. The dyeability aspects were comparable in terms of surface color strength ( K/ S), color difference ( ΔE) and fastness ratings. Around 50–75% savings in water, energy, power, time and effluent generation were reported. The chemical oxygen demand, biological oxygen demand, total dissolved solids, pH and turbidity values of the resulting effluent were found to be remarkably lower. The technology was also tested industrially and found to be successful.

Abstract:As a clean technology, ultrasonics has been widely explored in textile dyeing. Mordanting is commonly used for the achievement of efficient textile dyeing, however little attention has been paid on application of ultrasonics in mordanting. This study investigated sonochemical mordanting and its efficiency in subsequent dyeing. Ultrasonic bath, together with traditional water bath and magnetic stirring bath were investigated. Soy protein and F. Artemisiae argyi (FAA) were used as a mordant and natural dye, due to the their natural compatibility with cotton as well as biological properties. All the materials used in this work were natural with very little chemicals (present no harm to the environment) applied. Results showed that while soy mordanting in water bath can significantly increase fiber natural dye uptake, the dye affinity can be enhanced further when ultrasonic irradiation was applied. Ultrasonic mordanting was found to be able to produce higher fabric color strength (K/S) while consuming less soy protein when compared with other mordanting baths. Less weight increase as a result of ultrasonic irradiation can also provide cotton fabric with softer handle than those processed in traditional water bath. UV protection of dyed fabrics was found to be significantly improved from the control sample, with samples processed with ultrasonics showing the greatest improvement. In addition to the increased dye affinity as a result of soy mordanting, fabric bio function of antibacterial property was found to be simultaneously and successfully achieved.

Abstract:The presence of cuticle is the primary problem factor contributing to felting shrinkage, hydrophobicity, and yellowness in wool fabric. Substantial disulfide bonds forming cross-links within the scale layer result in an extraordinarily dense structure. During dyeing and finishing processes, the scale layer poses a significant barrier, impeding the efficient penetration of various chemicals. To mitigate the hindrance due to disulfide bonds in the scales, this study employed a cold pad-batch (CPB) reduction pretreatment followed by H 2 O 2 bleaching to treat woolen fabrics. The physical, chemical, and mechanical properties of the treated wool were evaluated through scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Allwörden reaction, whiteness index measurement, wettability assessment, felting properties examination, dyeing performance analysis, Raman spectroscopy, and tensile testing. The results indicated a 23.50% increase in the whiteness index with minimal damage to the strength of the fabric. Furthermore, the water absorption time decreased from 300 s to 6 s, and felting shrinkage was decreased to <10%. These findings indicate significant improvements in the hydrophilicity and anti-felting properties of the wool. Additionally, SEM and Allwörden reactions demonstrated substantial changes in the morphology and structure of the fibers after the pretreatment, corroborated by dyeing performance results. Raman spectra exhibited that the relative content of disulfide bonds within the scale layer decreased from 30.95% to 20.95%. It saved more than 20% of water consumption and 70% of energy consumption. The combination process greatly improved the properties of wool fibers without further damage to the main body.
