Abstract:An advanced method for the generation of 2D parametric model is presented. The method is based on designer's idea from 3D conceptual model to 2D geometry model. Based on geometric reasoning, the system effectively supports parametric modification of a given design in one view or multiple views through dimension-drive. This approach has been realized on micro computers.

Abstract:Considering the Characteristics of architecture scheme design, a new approach based on support housing design scheme is presented. It supports generating the visual presentation from the abstract scheme, and supports the semiautomatic modification at multiple abstract levels of representation scheme, which makes the CAD system more powerful and easier to use. The approach has been implemented in a CAAD (Computer Aided Architecture Design) system.

Abstract:Using performance-based optimisation to explore unknown design solutions space has become widely acknowledged and considered an efficient approach to designing high-performing buildings.However, the lack of design diversity in the design space defined by the parametric model often confines the search of the optimisation process to a family of similar design variants.In order to overcome this weakness, this paper presents two parametric massing generation algorithms based on the additive and subtractive form generation principles.By abstracting the rule of these two principles, the algorithms can generate diverse building massing design alternatives.This allows the algorithms to be used in performance-based optimisation for exploring a wide range of design alternatives guided by various performance objectives.Two case studies of passive solar energy optimisation are presented to demonstrate the efficacy of the algorithm in helping architects achieve an explorative performance-based optimisation process.

Abstract:A city is composed of billions of interacting factors that form a complex system.Parametric design method can be very useful in settling urban design problems because it can build a model of the complex interactions inside an urban system.In the year 2011,the theme of the joint architectural design studio of postgraduate students of Tsinghua,Princeton and Tokyo University is the micro-City near Haneda Airport in Tokyo Bay.Tsinghua students develop their design using parametric design method, and try to simulate the growth and evolution of urban forms in a bottom-up way.Finally,three students' projects are introduced to demonstrate the achievements in this studio on parametric urban desing.

Abstract:A parametric technology with fine sacle analysis was introduced into the road morphology planning to correctly inherit the character of road morphology and make the planning more scientific.A road morphology analysis and reconstruct technology model was formed.Parameter set to generate the road morphology, calculation of the parameters, and method to reconstruct road morphology was also put forward.At meantime, from the perspective of function and form, a evalution model and some evalution indexes were put forward to test and verify the validity and rationality of analysis and reconstruct method, also an empirical research of two classical villages was taken.Results show that the parametric analysis and reconstruction method can get the road morphology that is extremely similar to original texture shape, providing certain reference and auxiliary function to the road morphology design.

Abstract:This paper explores the creation of architectural structures through parametric design tools. The proposed methodology presents an alternative framework of using digital tools for the product design development from the design thinking point of view. The main core of the suggested design process includes a great number of theoretical issues from design identity, design language and architectural design areas. As a result, designers can develop constructions for public spaces that are based on innovative morphologies by using new digital design techniques such as computational design (Rhino3D and Grasshopper). The development of an architectural structure that aims to bring greenery into the city and increase the rest and action spaces is presented. A valuable aspect of this exploration is in positioning the proposed design framework inside - to aid in the creative process and better leverage downstream outcomes. The final steps of the proposed methodology include the production of the final architectural structure through rapid prototyping, laser cutting and engraving techniques.

Abstract:Contemporary systems are trending toward 3D computer-aided design systems that integrate, network, and exhibit intelligence. The integration of parametric technology with ancient Chinese architecture can enhance the efficiency and quality of managing information on ancient buildings, thereby expanding the application scenarios of ancient architectural information models. By analyzing the construction characteristics of ancient Chinese carpentry work and modular systems, this research outlines the logic and methods for generating Chinese ancient architecture. The program's parametric technology allows for adjusting variable parameters to produce carpentry work structures of varying scales and forms. Furthermore, this research establishes a library of parametric 3D components for ancient architecture, which can simplify the design process of contemporary antique architecture. Additionally, the parametrization of Chinese ancient architectures can function as an auxiliary tool for maintenance and repair techniques, serving as a storage mechanism for whole-life cycle information. This can enable the digital archiving of component information and model entities in an informative manner for managing existing ancient architectures.

Generative Design and Performance Optimization of Residential Buildings Based on Parametric Algorithm

Abstract:As passive green design and performance optimization are very important in the early design stage of green residences to reduce building energy consumption, energy-efficient green design and artificial intelligence technology are combined in this work for the design of residential buildings. A parametric generative algorithm is developed to automatically generate design schemes of typical Chinese urban residences based on performance-oriented design flow. By summarizing the workflow of architects, the algorithm based on the technical route is as follows: 1) spatial form features extraction of residence database; 2) automatic generation and energy simulation of new design schemes; 3) evaluation and screening of generated schemes. The generative algorithm is formulated with Rhino/Grasshopper and Python. Via a residence design case in Beijing, the design scheme with the lowest cooling and heating load among 1,595 automatically generated schemes is deemed as the optimal scheme. The total load of the optimal scheme is 15.8% lower than that of the worst scheme and 4.2% lower than that of the original scheme. Therefore, the parametric generative design of residences is able to facilitate passive green design in the early design stage and enhance energy efficiency without the increase of construction costs. Abstract:Traditionally, engineers await for a locked geometry from architects before modeling work starts. This is to avoid many changes and thereby risk of wasting time and money in the traditional manual way of working. With parametric design, we set up the design to cope with many changes and it is therefore adaptable for projects with many changes. With the parametric approach, we deliver a 3D model and FEM calculations model in the early project phases without any time wasted for the coming changes in the project geometry. These early models are to great benefit for all participants in the project as decisions regarding design, buildability and economics can be made on a more well founded basis. A model generated parametrically means in basic terms that the model is set up as a program script, with various input parameters. The model is generated by running this script. Thereby any changes in input parameters will only result in a dynamic real time change of the model. The time used to generate a parametric script for a given project, can be saved multiple times later in the project. Time is particularly saved if the project contains several similar structures, which can be generated by the same of parts of the same parametric script. In MOE, we have experience from various projects containing parametric design scripting. In this article, we will focus on one example, a steel light‐rail bridge.

Abstract:A city is a typical complex system that composed of billions of individual factors that interact with each other, and evolve dynamically. Parametric design method considers design conditions as the parameters of form generation, and introduces bottom-up emergent process in computers into architectural design. Because of such mechanism, it is supposed that parametric design can be applied in urban design problems, and brings rationality and creativity into urban design. In the year 2011, a joint design studio of Princeton university, Tokyo university and Tsinghua university is carried out. graduate students from the three universities dive into the design of a micro-city that expands from Haneda airport in Tokyo bay area. The design studio in Tsinghua lasts for 16 weeks, and the students are asked to develop their ideas in a parametric way, and explore the potential of bottom-up generation of urban design using computer tools.

Abstract:The digital paradigm requires efficient methods of teaching CAAD tools in architecture schools. With the trend of enhancing the design process with parametric methods, linking architecture with other knowledge areas, such as mathematics, is gaining in importance. Equipping future architects with skills in algorithmic thinking is yet another challenge for education. This paper describes the workflow of an early-stage course addressing this challenge, conducted at the Warsaw University of Technology's Faculty of Architecture. The course focuses on the students' ability to construct complex geometric forms in the digital environment by introducing an extensive analytic phase. The students study the geometric foundations of real-world architectural cases and translate them into parametric models. Later, they explore the potential of the generated solutions space. The results compare the course's teaching efficiency with the outcomes of past courses covering similar subjects.

Abstract:In this article we aim to give new light on the thinking of Luigi Moretti, first to have formulated the concept of parametric architecture, comparing it with those of some contemporary architectural theorists and designers. Latest researches on materials and form finding experiences have shown a new relationship between form and structure, Moretti understood it before the advent of internet. Moretti's parameter stems from the architectural tradition, as Carpo sees relations between parametric design and history. Moretti’s Parametric architecture is interdisciplinary, open to science in ways that we are only now understanding. We therefore believe that recovering Moretti’s methods of parametric architecture today, thanks to the power of artificial intelligence and the proliferation of big data, can open new opportunities for computational architecture, as well as Moretti’s mistakes can be a precious teaching.

Abstract:The use of parametric design optimization should not be merely a solution for design challenges, rather, a medium of reflection. The research explores how to conceive feasible design schemas and formulate appropriate parametric models capable of fully exploiting potential performance improvements through an iteratively reflective design synthesis with parametric design optimization. Taking a courtyard design as a case study, the paper describes three alternative parametric models for natural lighting optimization. A comparative analysis of the populations is presented, showing that the alternative parametric modelling approaches have a progressive positive impact on the quality of design performance.

Abstract:For the problem of parametric design of anisotropic curves and cambers in the practical application field of environmental landscape design, in this exploration, the modeling of design object is carried out through computer parametric technology. It is based on the information collection and data extraction of design object and the formulation of logical relationship between parametric variable factors related to design. For nonlinear systems, a necessary condition to judge parameters is proposed. This criterion is a natural extension of the PBH criterion, which makes it easy to identify the parameters of the pseudo-linear system in the generalized case, and avoids a lot of complex operations; at the same time, a parametric design method of dynamic environment landscape is proposed systematically. In the first order, second order, high order and generalized nonlinear model, the complete parametric optimization method of environmental landscape design is established. The fmin search function in MATLAB optimization toolbox is used to solve the generalized nonlinear system. The performance of the algorithm is tested by the examples of pseudo velocity, pseudo velocity uniformity and parameter optimization of the parametric curve called by the software environment. The results show that system dynamic process to simulate the dynamic environmental changes in landscape design by using the optimized parameter method is faster than that by using the unoptimized method. Meanwhile, the optimization method in this exploration can reduce the amplitude of change when external factors interfere, which shows that the optimized parametric design model has better transient performance; the curve generated by calling the drawing function provided in this exploration is smoother when the number of drawing points is the same.

Abstract:Abstract Parametric modeling software is a powerful design tool for controlling dimensions, accessing high-quality model libraries, and iterating on design concepts. However, its steep learning curve, complex user interfaces, and lack of spatial understanding can hinder novice users from creating reusable and precise solid models. To overcome these barriers, we introduce pARametric, an augmented reality (AR) system that provides an effortless parametric modeling experience in situ. This system features an immersive sketching platform for freehand sketching, a transformer-based parametric sketch construction algorithm, and an AR interface that offers intuitive hand-to-virtual geometry interaction for 3D modeling operations. In pARametric, a novice designer without experience in 3D modeling can create parametric models for personal fabrication. Our system uses environmental information as design references to make decisions about structure, dimension, and shape. The system allows users to express their design intents by sketching in freehand rather than mastering the sophisticated operations of existing modeling software. We also incorporate widely used 3D modeling features such as extrusion, revolution, sweep, and mirror to create a wide variety of models. In a user study with 8 participants, we discovered that novice designers see great potential in pARametric to enhance their capabilities and willingness to engage in parametric modeling for design. We further discuss how our system can be integrated into traditional parametric modeling workflows to benefit a wider range of designers for visualization and collaboration on sophisticated design tasks.

Abstract:This paper starts with the discussion and practical exploration over the logical thinking and systematic thinking in the Chinese traditional culture.And then it elaborates the design concept and methodology of the Concept of Metric Design put forward by the author and argues that metrical rules or patterns should also be given attention when designers carry on the form innovation through studies on a series of issues,ranging from logics and consistency,to series,framework and consecutiveness,in the following systems in the Chinese traditional culture,including poetic metrics,the Five Elements system,Eight Trigrams in the Book of Changes,vertical and horizontal segmentation in Sudoku,reorganization system of the seven original pieces in Tangram,simpli cation in Chinese calligraphy rules,classi ed diagram system,and the orientation and color system.Based on the above results,this paper will further the practical research on the creation;interpret the totally new but prevailing concept of Parametric Design in the architectural design eld;deeply analyze the subversive design ideas and methods,which is different from the metrical design;attempt to discuss the possibility and necessity of this kind of design thinking and methodology getting involving into the field of two-dimension-oriented visual communication design;make some preliminary discussion and prediction about its growing trend,combining with the author's own practical research of design.
