Abstract:This year Fudan University takes part in the TREC conference for the second time. We have participated in four tracks of Filtering, Q&A, Web and Video. For filtering, we participate in the sub-task of adaptive and batch filtering. Vector representation and computation are heavily applied in filtering procedure. Four runs have been submitted, which includes one T10SU and one T10F run for adpative filtering, as well as another one T10SU and one T10F run for batch filtering. We have tried many natural language processing techniques in our QA system, including statistical sentence breaking, POS tagging, parsing, name entity tagging, chunking and semantic verification. Various sources of world knowledge are also incorporated, such as WordNet and geographic information. For web retrieval, relevant document set is first created by an extended Boolean retrieval engine, and then reordered according to link information. Four runs with different combination of topic coverage and link information are submitted. On video track, We take part in both of the sub-tasks. In the task of shot boundary detection, we have submitted two runs with different parameters. In the task of video retrieval, we have submitted the results of 17 topics among all the topics.

Abstract:This year Fudan University takes part in the TREC-9 conference for the first time. We have participated in three tracks of CLIR, Filtering and QA. We have submitted four runs for CLIR track. Bilingual knowledge source and statistical-based search engine are integrated in our CLIR system. We varied our strategy somewhat between runs: long query (both title and description field of the queries involved) with pseudo relevance feedback (FDUT9XL1), long query with no feedback (FDUT9XL2), median query (just description field of queries involved) with feedback (FDUT9XL3) and, the last, mono long query with feedback (FDUT9XL4). For filtering, we participate in the sub-task of adaptive filtering and batch filtering. Vector representation and computation are heavily applied in filtering procedure. 11 runs of various combination of topic and evaluation measure have been submitted: 4 OHSU runs, 1 MeSH run and 2 MSH-SAMPLE runs for adaptive filtering, and 2 OHSU runs, 1 MeSH run and 1 MSH-SAMPLE run for batch filtering. Our QA system consists of three components: Question Analyzer, Candidate Window Searcher and Answer Extractor. We submitted two runs in the 50-byte category and two runs in the 250-byte category. The runs of FDUT9QL1 and FDUT9QS1 are extracted from the top 100 candidate windows. The other two runs of FDUT9QL2 and FDUT9QS1 are extracted from the top 24 candidate windows.

Abstract:In this notebook paper we describe our participation in the NIST TRECVID 2007 evaluation. We took part in two tasks of benchmark this year including high-level feature extraction and interactive search. For high-level feature extraction, we submitted 4 runs. FD_SVM: using SVM. FD_SVM_BN: using SVM and ontology. FD_MTL: using multi-task learning. FD_MTL_BN: using multi-task learning and ontology. Evaluation results illustrate that there are both advantages and disadvantages exist in all methods. For search, we submitted 5 interactive runs. Fudan_P: using multi-model and AP-based fusion. Fudan_R: using multi-model and MGR fusion. Fudan_C: cross system retrieval. Fudan_T: textual retrieval Fudan_I: image retrieval Evaluation results illustrate that the AP-based fusion method yields higher precision while the MGR fusion method finds more positive shots than other runs. We also experimented with simple cross system interactive retrieval to estimate the impact of manual browsing on the results.

Abstract:It is the fourth time that we take part in the QA track. Our system, FDUQA, is based on our previous system (Wu et al, 2002). FDUQA includes an offline part and an online part. We make great efforts on the online part while leaving the offline part unchanged. We have tried many natural language processing techniques, and incorporated many sources of world knowledge, including Web. A novel Query formulation technique has also been put forward. In addition, we’ve tried another attempt on answer extraction in this year’s task. In the second section, we will describe the architecture of our QA system; and give a detailed description on the Query formulation for Web search in the third section; while in the fourth section, we will introduce our new attempt on answer extraction; and we will present our performance in the last section.

Abstract:In this year’s QA Track, we participant in the main task and do not take part in the ciQA task. The main task is essentially the same as the single task from 2004, in that the test set consists of a set of question series where each series asks for information regarding a particular target. In order to better answer the questions in the series, we try to improve our anaphora resolution within question series. For factoid questions, we use the system that submits the RUN-A in TREC 2005[Wu et al. 2005]. Therefore we won’t describe the factoid system in this paper. For list questions, we get a lot of improvements, the most important of which are answer type classification, document searching, answer ranking and answer filtering. For definition question, we still focus on utilizing the existing definitions in the Web knowledge bases. And also applied the method of relative terms extraction to extract reliable information associated with target for getting web definition directly by question target is becoming a bottleneck. In the following, Section 2 will describe question series anaphora resolution. Section 3,and 4 will describe our algorithms for list and definition questions separately. Section 5 will present our results in TREC 2006.

Abstract:datasets. The preprocess step is same as our system in TREC QA 2006[Zhou et al. 2006]. We firstly index the documents for fast retrieval. The search engine used in our system is Lucene, an open source document retrieval system. We build four different indexing files. The first two are indexed based on the whole document and the single paragraph of original articles respectively. The rest two are indexed based on the whole document and single paragraph of the morphed articles. Before analyzing question, we process the questions with our question series anaphora

Abstract:In this year’s QA Track, we process factoid questions in a way that is slightly different from our previous system [1]. The most significant difference is that we developed a new answer type category, and trained a classifier for answer type classification. To answer list questions, we use a pattern-based method to find more answers other than those found in the processing of factoid question. And an algorithm that uses some knowledge bases answers definition questions. This algorithm achieves a promising result. In our system, external knowledge is widely used, which includes WordNet and Internet. The ontology in WordNet is used in the answer type classification, and its synsets are used to do query extension. Internet is used not only to find factoid question answers, but also as knowledge base for definition questions. In the following, Section 2, 3, 4 will separately introduce our algorithm to solve factoid, list and definition questions. Section 5 will present our results in TREC2004.

Abstract:We participate in two tasks of TRECVID 2009: high-level feature extraction (HLFE) and search. This paper presents our approaches and results in the two tasks. In HLFE task, we mainly focus on exploring the effective feature representation, data imbalance learning and fusion between different data sets. In feature representation, we adopt five basic visual features and six keypoint-based BoW features, and combine them to represent each keyframe image. In imbalance learning, we propose two methods for this problem: OnUm and concept category. In the fusion between different data sets, we use three different training sets: (1) TRECVID 2009 training data set (Tv09), (2) TRECVID 2005 training data set (Tv05), and (3) Flickr images. In search task, we participate in two types of search tasks: automatic search and manual search. We explore multimodal feature representation, which includes visual-based features, concept-based feature, audio features and face features. Based on these features, two retrieval methods are jointly adopted for search task: pair-wise similarity measure and learning-based ranking. We achieve the good results in both tasks. In HLFE task, official evaluation shows that our team ranks 2 nd in type A and 1 st in types C, a and c. In Search task, official evaluations show that our team rank 2 nd in automatic search and 1 st in manual search.

Abstract:paper describes our participation in the opinion retrieval task at Blog Track 07. The system consisted of the preprocess part, the topic retrieval part and sentiment analysis part. In the topic retrieval part, we adopted pseudo-relevance feedback and a novel approach to form a modified query. In the sentiment analysis part, each blog post was given an opinion score based on the sentences contained in this post. The subjectivity of each sentence was predicted by a CME classifier. Then the blog posts were reranked based on the similarity given by the topic retrieval and the opinion score given by the sentiment analysis.

Abstract:In this paper, we describe our participation for high-level feature extraction, automatic search and surveillance event detection at TRECVID 2008 evaluation. In high-level feature extraction, we use selective attention model to extract visual salient feature which highlights the most visual attractive information of an image. Besides this, we extract 7 low-level features for various modalities as a baseline and use linear weighted fusion of multi-modalities . Results show that simple linear weighted fusion works pretty well. In addition, ASR is useful to improve the performance . Abstract:This is the first year that our group participates in the Web track of the TREC conference. Here we report our system and methods on the topic distillation task and the home/named page finding task.All of our experiments are conducted on a Web search platform we designed and developed from scratch. We originally want to use an existing retrieval system such as Okapi or the full text search mechanism of SQL Server. But we soon find the limitations of such a strategy–these systems cannot fully support some important Web search functions such as link analysis and anchor text, and they also lack of the flexibility to arbitrarily adjust some parameters or add new ranking functions. So we decided to design and implement a research platform to let researchers to test various algorithms or new ideas easily and, also, to conduct the TREC experiments easily. We will introduce the framework of this system in the “Platform” section.

Abstract:We participated in the high-level feature extraction and interactive-search task for TRECVID 2006. Interaction and integration of multi-modality media types such as visual, audio and textual data in video are the essence of video content analysis. Although any uni-modality type partially expresses limited semantics less or more, video semantics are fully manifested only by interaction and integration of any unimodal. For the high-level feature extraction and interactive-search tasks, taking the temporal-sequenced associated cooccurence characteristic of multimodal media data in video into consideration, we develop a new approach to represent the relations between seperate shots, which mainly uses SimFusion and Locality Preserving Projections (LPP). SimFusion is an effective algorithm to reinforce or propagate the similarity relations between multi-modalities. LPP is an optimal combination of linear and nonlinear dimensionality reduction method. For high-level feature extraction task, e.g.semantic concept detection which actually is a pattern recognition problem, we use SVM as the powerful classifier to perform detection. For interactive search, we make use of relevance feedback to revise search results. We submitted one fun for each task.

Abstract:We participate in document search and expert search of Enterprise Track in TREC2008. The corpus and tasks are same as the year before. Different from TREC 2007, the topics come from CSIRO Enquiries, and the topic statements are richer and more colloquial.. In document search, we look into the key resource page pre-selection, the use of anchor text, query classification, and multi-field search. In expert search, we develop methods to detect expert identifiers and experimented based on our previous PDD (personal description documents) model.

Abstract:In this year's TREC Web Track research, THUIR participated in the Mixed-query Task. This task involves a single query set comprising 3 kinds of queries (Homepage Finding, Named Page Finding and Topic distillation) which are mixed and unlabelled. Efforts have been made on two directions: to find a strong and robust unified approach which works well for all kinds of queries, and to build a query-specific retrieval strategy that classifies queries by types and perform specific approaches. The using of non-content information has been studied in both approaches. With topic distillation and navigational search tasks in the last year, we are able to build a training set with 150 topics and corresponding relevant qrels. This training set is used to evaluate effectiveness of different methods in mixed query search. Experiments in section 2, 3 and 4 are all based on this set.

Fudan.Local: this run is based on local features of keyframes. Fudan.Rerank: this run is based on local features and spatial information of keyframes. Fudan.Fusion: this run is based on the fusion of global and local features of keyframes. Focus of our system was on the effective utilization of global and local visual features.
