Abstract:Objective To appraise the levels of plasma vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α) and their correlations with clinicopathological characteristics in gastric cancer. Methods In 47 cases of gastric carcinoma and 20 normal controls, the plasma samples of VEGF and TNF-α were measured by Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbnent Assay (ELISA). Results The plasma levels of VEGF and in gastric carcinoma patients were (65. 12±29. 53) pg/mL and (8. 50±2. 91) pg/mL, respectively, and were significantly higher than those of healthy controls (P 0. 01). Both plasma VEGF and TNF-α levels were higher in patients with deep invasion, lymph node metastasis, and vascular infiltration, TNF-α was also significantly elevated in advanced gastric carcinoma patients (P 0. 05, 0. 01). TNF-α of Ⅲ,Ⅳ stage subgroups was significantly higher than those of I , II stage subgroups. A positive relationship was found between VEGF and TNF-α levels (r = 0. 663, P 0. 05). Conclusion The plasma levels of VEGF and TNF-α are correlated with progression of gastric cancer. TNF-α level is correlated with the tumor stage. Hence, combined determination of the two is of value in clinical practice. VEGF and TNF-α might play an important role in evolution of gastric carcinoma. (Shanghai Med J, 2006, 29: 290-292)
