Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To investigate the overexpressions of p53 homologues p73 and p63 proteins in pancreatic adenocacinoma and their clinical pathological significance. METHODS: Immunohistochemical LSAB method was performed to examine the overexpressions of p73 and p63 proteins in 75 cases of pancreatic adenocarcinoma.RESULTS: The positive rates of p73 and p63 protein overexpressions were 46.7% and 42.7%, respectively. The incidence of p73 overexpression was significantly higher in cystic adenocarcinomas than that in ductal carcinomas,P=0.009. Furthermore, p73 overexpression was inversely related to lymph node, tumor size, nerve infiltration and p53 expression,P<0.05. On the other hand, there was a significant difference in overexpression of p63 between ductal adenocarcinoma and adenosquamous carcinoma including adenocarcinoma with squamous epithelial metaplasia,P=0.007. No correlation was found between the overexpression of p63 protein and various clinicopathological parameters, p53 and PCNA expression. CONCLUSION: Decreased expression of p73 protein may play an important role in the development of pancreatic adenocarcinoma and p63 protein may be involved in the development of adenosquamous carcinoma and adenocarcinoma with squamous epithelial metaplasia.
