Abstract:In recent years,"absence of critical thinking" among foreign language majors has aroused an increasing amount of concern and attention in the academic circle.However,very few studies have been conducted to provide empirical evidence.This paper,based on a questionnaire survey involving nearly 400 English majors from 4 different universities in Jiangsu Province,supported by some other means of investigation,re-examines the existent problem from students' perspective.Our study reveals that "absence of critical thinking" does exist among English majors;that students have not yet realized the seriousness of lack of thinking ability;that much can be done to raise their awareness and narrow the gap between their perception and action;that quite a number of students attribute their problems to the current methods of assessment and regard reform in educational system as the most urgent.The strong appeal to reform and desire to improve from the students are to be understood as a sense of responsibility and a great challenge for teachers.
