Post-operative vision development in children with subluxated lens

Abstract:Objective To explore the post-operative visual development in children with subluxated lens. Methods Clinical records were reviewed retrospectively for a series of consecutive 12 cases(23 eyes) with congenital subluxation of lens from Jul.1999 to Nov.2007,ranging in age from 4 to 13 years(mean 7.78 years).All cases undergone the extraction of subluxated lens combined with intraocular lens implantation(stitches fixative intraocular lens implantation in 10 eyes and anterior chamber intraocular lens implantation in 13 eyes).A follow up period was over 3 months(mean 25.1 months).The postoperative changes of visual acuity and refraction were analyzed. Results Preoperatively,un-corrected visual acuity(UCVA) were 0.04~0.4(median 0.1),best corrected visual acuity(BCVA) were 0.1~0.8(median 0.2) and less than 0.3 in 16 eyes.The refraction were +18D ~-18D and in 15 eyes over ±10D.Postoperatively,BCVA were 0.2~0.6(median 0.3).The last BCVA was 0.4~1.0(median 0.7).The spherical equivalent in most cases were <3.00D,only in one eye was-7.00D.The astigmatism were over 2.5D in two eyes.Postoperative inflammation was light and there were not serious complication in all of these cases.The visual improvement or complication of post-operation was similarity between two methods of intraocular lens implantation.Conclusions For children with subluxated lens,operation in time is beneficial to visual development.The satisfactory visual acuity can be achieved.
