Abstract:It is to our common knowledge that optimization of arrangement of land property and land transfer market can reduce or even eliminate land fragmentation, which is capable of efficiency loss. However, the thousand-year-long history of land fragmentation in China poses a challenge to such recognition. Based on the fact that the Chinese population is out of proportion to land area, this dissertation proposes that at present, with the farm land being irreplaceable, undividable and employment insurance, the cost of land transaction far exceeds the profits that pieces of land plots can produce. In this context, amalgamation of land plots in the possession of farmers through market adjustment sees no feasibility. Only the decrease in the number of farmers and the gradual alternation of the above-mentioned features of farm land caused by permanent city-bound migration can bring the agriculture land in line with the market adjustment
