Using the theory of the impulsive equation, small-amplitude perturbations, and comparative techniques, a condition is identified which guarantees the global asymptotic stability of the prey-(x) and predator-(y) eradication periodic solution. It is proved that the system is permanent. Furthermore, the influences of impulsive perturbations on the inherent oscillation are studied numerically, an oscillation which exhibits rich dynamics including period-halving bifurcation, chaotic narrow or wide windows, and chaotic crises. Computation of the largest Lyapunov exponent confirms the chaotic dynamic behavior of the model. All these results may be useful for study of the dynamic complexity of ecosystems.

Abstract:The dynamics of a discrete-time Ricardo–Malthus model obtained by numerical discretization is investigated, where the step size δ is regarded as a bifurcation parameter. It is shown that the system undergoes flip bifurcation and Neimark–Sacker bifurcation in the interior of R^2_+ by using the theory of center manifold and normal form. Numerical simulations are presented not only to illustrate our theoretical results, but also to exhibit the system’s complex dynamical behavior, such as the cascade of period-doubling bifurcation in orbits of period 2, 4, 8 16, period-11, 22, 28 orbits, quasiperiodic orbits, and the chaotic sets. These results reveal far richer dynamics of the discrete model compared with the continuous model. The Lyapunov exponents are numerically computed to confirm further the complexity of the dynamical behaviors.

Abstract:This work concentrates on the dynamic analysis including bifurcation and chaos of a discrete ecological developmental systems. Specifically, it is a prey–predator–scavenger (PPS) system, which is derived by Euler discretization method. By choosing the step size <i>h</i> as a bifurcation parameter, we determine the set consists of all system's parameters, in which the system can undergo flip bifurcation (FB) and Neimark–Sacker bifurcation (NSB). The theoretical results are verified by some numerical simulations. It is shown that the discrete systems exhibit more interesting behaviors, including the chaotic sets, quasi-periodic orbits, and the cascade of period-doubling bifurcation in orbits of periods 2, 4, 8, 16. Finally, corresponding to the two bifurcation behaviors discussed, the maximum Lyapunov exponent is numerically calculated, which further verifies the rich dynamic characteristics of the discrete system.

Abstract:The spatiotemporal patterns of a reaction diffusion mussel-algae system with a delay subject to Neumann boundary conditions is considered. The paper is a continuation of our previous studies on delay-diffusion mussel-algae model. The global existence and positivity of solutions are obtained. The stability of the positive constant steady state and existence of Hopf bifurcation and Turing bifurcation are discussed by analyzing the distribution of eigenvalues. Furthermore, the dynamic classifications near the Turing-Hopf bifurcation point are obtained in the dimensionless parameter space by calculating the normal form on the center manifold, and the spatiotemporal patterns consisting of spatially homogeneous periodic solutions, spatially inhomogeneous steady states, and spatially inhomogeneous periodic solutions are identified in this parameter space through some numerical simulations. Both theoretical and numerical results reveal that the Turing-Hopf bifurcation can enrich the diversity of spatial distribution of populations.

Stability switches and chaos induced by delay in a reaction-diffusion nutrient-plankton model

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate a reaction-diffusion model incorporating dynamic variables for nutrient, phytoplankton, and zooplankton. Moreover, we account for the impact of time delay in the growth of phytoplankton following nutrient uptake. Our theoretical analysis reveals that the time delay can trigger the emergence of persistent oscillations in the model via a Hopf bifurcation. We also analytically track the direction of Hopf bifurcation and the stability of the bifurcating periodic solutions. Our simulation results demonstrate stability switches occurring for the positive equilibrium with an increasing time lag. Furthermore, the model exhibits homogeneous periodic-2 and 3 solutions, as well as chaotic behaviour. These findings highlight that the presence of time delay in the phytoplankton growth can bring forth dynamical complexity to the nutrient-plankton system of aquatic habitats.

Abstract:In this paper, we proposed and investigated a model on the process of periodic harvesting and diffusion at different fixed moments using an impulsive differential equation with distributed delay and additive Allee effect. In this model, prey species was restricted to a single patch, and predator species will diffuse between two patches. By using the theories of impulsive equations, small amplitude perturbation skills and comparison techniques, we obtained the sufficient conditions ensuring the global asymptotical stability of the prey-eradication periodic solution and permanence of the system. Finally, some numerical simulations are carried out to consolidate the analytical findings.

Abstract:In this work the period-doubling bifurcation of a discrete metapopulation with delay in the dispersion terms is discussed. By using the central manifold method, the period-doubling bifurcation can be analyzed from the viewpoint of the dynamical system. Intensive simulation on this model shows the dynamics of the metapopulation is similar to that of a single logistic model as the bifurcation parameter μ increases when 0≤b<1/2, where b is the dispersion parameter.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the spatiotemporal dynamics of a diffusive Holling–Tanner predator–prey model with discrete time delay. Via analytically and numerically analysis, we unveil six types of patterns with and without time delay. Among them, of particular novel is the observation of linear pattern (consisting of a series of parallel lines), whose formation is closely related with the temporal Hopf bifurcation threshold. Moreover, we also find that larger time delay or diffusion of predator may induce the extinction of both prey and predator. Theoretical analysis and numerical simulations validate the well-known conclusion: diffusion is usually beneficial for stabilizing pattern formation, yet discrete time delay plays a destabilizing role in the generation of pattern.

Abstract:A spatial version of the predator–prey model with Holling III functional response, which includes some important factors such as external periodic forces, noise, and diffusion processes is investigated. For the model only with diffusion, it exhibits spiral waves in the two-dimensional space. However, combined with noise, it has the feature of chaotic patterns. Moreover, the oscillations become more obvious when the noise intensity is increased. Furthermore, the spatially extended system with external periodic forces and noise exhibits a resonant pattern and frequency-locking phenomena. These results may help us to understand the effects arising from the undeniable susceptibility to random fluctuations in the real ecosystems.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the spatiotemporal dynamics of a diffusive nutrient-phytoplankton model with delayed nutrient recycling. We first study the stability of positive equilibrium and Turing instability induced by diffusion. We then investigate the effect of delay, and it turns out that the value of the rate of recycling k plays an important role in the Hopf bifurcation induced by delay. The delay will and will not induce Hopf bifurcation with low and high level of k, respectively. To reveal the spatiotemporal dynamics, Turing–Hopf bifurcation is carried out, and normal form is derived. Many spatiotemporal dynamics are found, including the coexistence of two stable spatially inhomogeneous periodic solutions or two stable spatially inhomogeneous steadystate solutions.

Abstract:This paper presents the stability and bifurcation of the Hindmarsh–Rose neuronal model with time delay. First, we discuss the existence and stability of the equilibria, revealing that the system can have a maximum of three equilibria which exhibit always stable, always unstable, and stability switching dynamics, depending on the stability of the equilibria when there is no time delay. Furthermore, an explicit formula for the time delay at which Hopf bifurcation occurs is derived, and the direction and stability of the Hopf bifurcation are also given. Finally, numerical simulations are carried out to support our theoretical results. We find that due to the existence of time delay, our system can exhibit many interesting dynamical behaviors depending on the number of equilibria and the increase in time delay. For instance, with increasing time delay, bistability transitions to the coexistence of a periodic solution and a stable equilibrium, followed by the emergence of quasi-periodic motion alongside stable equilibria, and eventually leading to chaotic motion coexisting with a stable equilibrium.

Abstract:Competing populations within an ecosystem often release chemicals during the interactions and diffusion processes. These chemicals can have diverse effects on competitors, ranging from inhibition to stimulation of species’ growth. This work constructs a competition model that incorporates stimulatory substances, spatial effects, and multiple time lags to investigate the combined impact of these phenomena on competitors’ growth. When the stimulation rate from the produced chemicals falls within a suitable threshold interval, all species within the system can coexist. Under the species’ coexistence, their diffusive phenomenon leads to a spatially heterogeneous distribution, resulting in patchy structures (Turing patterns) within their habitat. As the parameter values exceed their thresholds, species begin to exhibit spatially periodic oscillations (spatial Hopf bifurcation). The presence of multiple delays and competitors’ diffusion contributes to spatially complex and heterogeneous behaviors (Turing–Hopf bifurcation). The results help us understand the underlying mechanisms behind these heterogeneous behaviors and enable us to mitigate their negative impact on species’ growth and harvest. Numerical simulations are used to measure the dynamics of competitors under different parameter conditions.

Abstract:This paper is to show that most discrete models used for population dynamics in ecology are inherently pathological that their predications cannot be independently verified by experiments because they violate a fundamental principle of physics. The result is used to tackle an on-going controversy regarding ecological chaos. Another implication of the result is that all continuous dynamical systems must be modeled by differential equations. As a result it suggests that researches based on discrete modeling must be closely scrutinized and the teaching of calculus and differential equations must be emphasized for students of biology.
