Abstract:Objective:To examine the potential role of COMT gene Val158Met polymorphisms in the adolescent course of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder(ADHD).Methods:A total of 77 DSM-Ⅳ ADHD boys of Chinese Han descent were followed up over 3 to 5 years from childhood to adolescent and were administered structured psychiatric interviews to make DSM-Ⅳ diagnoses evaluated at an average age of 14years.The Chi-square test was used to compare COMT Val158Met allele frequencies between different types of the outcome in ADHD,such as the remitted children and non-remitted children. Results:Of the 77 total children in the sample,41(53.2%) showed no remission,36(46.8%) met criteria for remission:13(16.9%) met criteria for syndromatic remission,7(9.1%) met criteria for symptomatic remission, and 16(20.8%) met criteria for functional remission. No significant differences in allele frequencies of the Val158Met polymorphism of COMT were observed among any of the remitted or non-remitted subjects. Conclusion:The Val158Met SNP of COMT had no potential role on the adolescent course of ADHD.To confirm our findings further studies with a larger number of subjects are needed.
